Kara, as nice as it is to complete the challenge, it will be nicer to enjoy the upcoming holiday and the books you are reading. Good luck!

Agnes Muscoreil (witchy1) Will finish book #150 tomorrow - I have done LOTS of reading over these past few days! Thank goodness for the holidays :-) they helped me meet my 2012 goal. Now on to 2013!

message 253: by Adriana (new)

Adriana | 3888 comments Today's the day! It's the last day for me to finally finish reading the last book for 2012.

message 254: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) Congrats Agnes!

Adriana, it's a sad and a happy day! haha. ;)

Happy New Year everybody! What are your plans for the evening?

I'm going to be having a quiet night at home with my family. :) So interesting, right? lol.

message 255: by Agnes (new)

Agnes Muscoreil (witchy1) As a member of our local Lions club, we hold a Lil' Apple Ball Drop for the youngsters in our area to attend with their parents. Party from 7 - 9:00 pm, with an actual ball drop off a crane at 9 PM so they can count down to the new year, then go home and to bed! Lots of fun ~ then to a friend's house for the REAL celebration:-0

message 256: by Nathaly (new)

Nathaly | 356 comments My family and I are spending the night at my dad's house. He lives in Elgin which is about 40 minutes away from where I live so we're going to be sleeping over. I don't want to be driving at 3 am. TOO DANGEROUS!

message 257: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi (essentiallybooked) | 751 comments My college football team made a bowl game so I'm definitely not reaching my read goal today. Instead, I will be watching Iowa State play and hang out with friends for the rest of the day! Happy New Year everyone :)

message 258: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Today I'm cooking and cleaning all day (Japanese tradition is no housework after the New Year), and tonight we're doing dinner with friends then a dive bar crawl.

No reading, but I'm pretty happy with my 146 books for the year. Not quite my goal, but Megan's right. I'm going to enjoy the holiday. And a new goal starts tomorrow!

message 259: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Next up for cooking: SmittenKitchen hello dolly bars: http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2007/1...

I was traveling for Christmas, so I'm going to mail these to family as a belated holiday treat.

message 260: by Agnes (new)

Agnes Muscoreil (witchy1) Those sound (and look) delicious! Thanks ~

Sheena | 174 comments Hello Everyone, Finally not running on Mobile!!!

I hope everyone had a safe and wonderful Christmas!! We are actually celebrating the New Year with a new puppy that is coming home today. My kiddos are super excited but I wish this mom would get there!!

Happy NEW Year and happy Reading.

message 262: by Toni (new)

Toni | 234 comments Just finished my last book of the year The Keepers of the House. Tonight I go to my best friends' house for a big pizza party - everyone brings their favorite toppings. I am thinking there will be card playing as well.

Happy 2013 and as always, happy reading!

message 263: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Happy New Year! I'm going out with a good friend for dinner, then we are watching "Psycho" (because she's never seen the original) and making Chocolate Pain Perdu ala Melissa D'Arabian. I hope everyone has a great and safe evening!

message 264: by Julie (new)

Julie | 37 comments I am starting Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour bookstore. Could not wait one more day to start! And since i have no other plans other than watching ball drop on the tv. I am using this time to get a headstart on 2013 reading! Happy new year and good luck on all reading challenges!

message 265: by Adriana (new)

Adriana | 3888 comments Finished my last book of the New Year! It ended on a good note. Have a couple family member's here. Playing board games and watching t.v.

message 266: by Maria (new)

Maria (reereads) | 136 comments I was able to finish Home Front by Kristin Hannah early this morning, So, Im happy to have it take first spot on my Reading Challenge for 2013 :) It was an amazing book by the way- I might treat myself to a new book from Target today! Happy New Year Everybody!

message 267: by Diane (new)

Diane (didi3023) | 6 comments I can't decide what to read next- I started three books yesterday and don't know which one I want to read. So many books, so little time! I received Black Hillsfor Christmas but already started White Truffles in Winter and Heartbroken. I have to decide because I am a one-book-at-a-time person!

I am a one-book at a time person, too, Diane. I tend to make piles of books or arrange them on my bookshelves in the order I want to read them.

message 269: by Squirrel (new)

Squirrel (squirrelysquirrel) | 53 comments I often wish I were a one-book-at-a-time person. I'll usually have a short story collection going at the same time as two novels (one that takes awhile to go through, and one that doesn't), or three if I also have class reading.

message 270: by Ashley (new)

Ashley I hope everyone had an awesome New Year's Eve and New Years Day!

I spent New Year's Eve with my family watching college football bowl games. Then we watched the ball drop on tv. Nothing too terribly exciting.

Today, my husband and I made the 8.5 hour car ride from North Carolina back to Illinois. (I already miss NC!) However, there is nice pretty snow on the ground!

I'm ready to start reading tomorrow....after I get unpacked and take our Christmas tree down. :)

message 271: by Nathaly (new)

Nathaly | 356 comments Happy New Year everyone. Hope this is is better than the last!

message 272: by Lilac (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 910 comments Just wondering but what exactly is a ball drop? It's been mentioned a few times on the site now but I've no idea what it is.

message 273: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments We never watched it in Hawaii (mostly because we're five hours behind), so I didn't really know about it either until I moved to the mainland.

In Times Square, they do this big NYE celebration, and they have this giant, lit up ball that they "drop" on the count of ten as it hits midnight.

message 274: by Lilac (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 910 comments Cool! Sounds like a fun way for the year to end and a new one to begin :)

message 275: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Yeah, they broadcast it live, so you can watch it from anywhere in the country. The place we were hanging out at showed it on a huge wall, and we all counted down with it.

message 276: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Haha, I love when they drop it! Everyone stops talking and just counts down. When the new year lights up, we all hoot and holler! (Yep, that's the Southern coming out in me) :)

message 277: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) lol I'm glad I'm not the only one who watches the ball drop every year...

Am I the only Canadian who does it, tho??

message 278: by Sheena (new)

Sheena | 174 comments So I have been looking over my TBR list and it is a little overwhelming and the super sad thing is I don't have all my books on it. Is it bad that I am just not going to pay attention to it?? How many of you are the same way??

message 279: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Aww, your TBR list is supposed to be fun! If it's overwhelming, I think you should just not do it.

I add to mine all the time (and it has all the books I own but haven't read yet), but I use it regularly.

message 280: by Ashley (last edited Jan 04, 2013 03:37PM) (new)

Ashley Sheena, I don't think I have read a book off of my TBR in over 6 months. I always find something else I want to read more at the time. It's not that I don't want to read them...there is a reason I put them on the TBR list, lol. I just haven't found the right mood to read them, if that even makes sense. :)

message 281: by Toni (new)

Toni | 234 comments My TBR is very big. I use it to keep track of everything may want to read. I just recently went through it and eliminated a few. I use my sub-lists to organize the books I own or want to read for challenges or my face to face book club.

message 282: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) I gave up controlling my TBR list a long time ago. I'll probably not get to most of the books there but that's okay with me! I had to make that decision before I went crazy. lol

message 283: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 283 comments I agree with Trevor. My TBR list is long which is okay with me. I add books that look interesting to it all the time as a way to remember them. I'm sure I'll never read all the books on my list as my list is constantly growing.

message 284: by Bárbara (new)

Bárbara (barbarawmf) Hi everyone. I only saw NY's falling gigantic light ball once back in 83. Great feeling too. My challenge for this year is to keep n reading everything I can get my hands on.Right now I am reading Love Among the Artists by George Bernard Shaw , Winkie by Clifford Chase and rereading in between Greatest Thing World by Henry Drummond . Happy new year to all.

message 285: by Nathan (last edited Jan 06, 2013 06:43PM) (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) So I saw Les Miz a few days ago and it was awesome! Has anyone else seen it? Read the book? What was your favorite song?

I've had "Can you hear the people sing?" stuck in my head for 3 days now! Mostly because I can't stop listening to it. xP

message 286: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments I haven't seen The Hobbit yet, and the main reason is the money grabbing you mentioned with the trilogy, Craig. I mean, are you SERIOUSLY turning a 300 page book into what is essentially a nine hour movie? Ludicrous.

message 287: by Christa (new)

Christa Hello everyone. My name is Christa and i'm from Stratford, ON Canada. I've been off sick for awhile so what to do to pass the time but read. I joined this website because my friend found it.

What books do i read? All depends on the mood. The last couple of weeks was all over the place.

Creep by Jennifer Hillier
Rock Hard (Sinners on Tour, #2) by Olivia Cunning

and i'm now onto....
A Secret Kept by Tatiana de Rosnay

message 288: by Kelsi (last edited Jan 07, 2013 04:19PM) (new)

Kelsi (essentiallybooked) | 751 comments I really loved The Hobbit. I understand that the 3 movie thing is a bit ridiculous, but Jackson did a really good job of embracing the story and diving right in. He also is/will be including deeper plot lines from the Silmarillion and the appendices of LOTR so that we get more of a backstory. There was ONE plot change that kind of bugged me, but it worked and is somewhat true to Tolkien.

Also, Les Mis was incredible. The music gets me every time. I can't listen to the soundtrack without crying because the movie was so good and powerful. I cried for most of the movie, not just at the sad parts, but at how great the music was. Kinda dorky, I know, but go see it!

message 289: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments I'm sure I'll see The Hobbit--I might just wait a bit since the theater near my house shut down, so going to movies becomes a bit less convenient.

I'm definitely going to see Les Mis. I love the book, I love the musical, and the preview looked amazing.

Speaking of books turned movies: is anyone else super jazzed for Anna Karenina?

message 290: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 283 comments I saw Les Mis and felt the same as Kelsi about the music. I was blown away by Anne Hathaway's performance! I love musicals. :)

I'm planning to see the Hobbit soon. All of my kids saw it and enjoyed it. I am also concerned that three movies are being made from a 300 page book, but have been told the same thing that Kelsi said - there's more elaboration and it works. I love the LOTR trilogy, so I plan to see the Hobbit regardless and decide for myself. I guess that's what most people are doing since the IMDB ratings are lopsided. The public rates the movie highly while the critics have been harder on it.

I planned to take my daughter to see Anna Karenina when she was home for Christmas, but the timing didn't work out. I guess I'll wait for it to come out on dvd.

I loved all Peter Jackson movies on Tolkien and I am a true Tolkien fan since my mother was one and passed them on to me at the age of 13. There was a failed attempt on the Lord of the Rings movie back in the 70's in NY but Peter Jackson is a great director and we also have to consider that all directors have creative licence to adapt as best as they feel the books they have loved. Life of Pi by Ang Lee is another example of magical adaptation on what could be done on a wonderful book. I guess it all boils down to the director. Personally I never compare a book with a film for I believe it is almost impossible to "to by the book". The word is too powerful. Good night everyone and nice reads to all. Thank you.

message 292: by Ashley (new)

Ashley I really want to see Les Miz! I want to read the book though first, so I'm thinking it will be a Redbox movie in the future.

On another note...I have just started watching episodes of Downton Abbey. Can you say amazing!? I have a feeling I will be reading some British Lit here soon, haha.

Ashley Woot! Woot! Us mods have been talking about something to do when we hit 1,000 members. Keep on the lookout! We're trying to come up with something fun! :)

message 296: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (carrie_s) | 130 comments 1000 members?! That is insane. When I joined last year, we were at just a few hundred. Any theories on the cause of such a quick increase in numbers?

Sharon (sharint) | 749 comments Carrie wrote: "1000 members?! That is insane. When I joined last year, we were at just a few hundred. Any theories on the cause of such a quick increase in numbers?"

Because we are an awesome group! :) Plus, I think a lot of people were setting their goals for the new year and saw this group as a way to keep track.

There's a buddy read of Les Miserables in July/August that's nearly 1,500 pages long! That would work :)

I'm pretty sure the only book I've read over 1000 pages would have to be
Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell

I've heard a lot of people saying they might read / or are reading
Les Misérables by Victor Hugo

Maybe I will find someone to borrow it from and attempt to read it over the next couple of months - July/August may not work for me

message 300: by Toni (new)

Toni | 234 comments @Sharon - Gone with the Wind is on my to read list this year. Does it read fairly quickly?

I have Les Misérables on my list of first books to read when I retire. I've tried it before and couldn't get through it. Same with Anna Karenina.
