SOLVED. Juvenile book about a boy and one of his magical adventures had something to do about the unum and thumun [s]

When I was a child there were two books that I owed ( and now have gotten rid of) that I'd like to read again.
It was about a boy and one of his magical adventures had something to do about the unum and thumun (sp?) (something from the bible). There was an older man who was his friend. I remember the paperback cover being a purplely blue. The second one about the boy had a creamy, orange or coral color cover (Idon't remember the plot).
I've been looking for it for ever!

haven't read books, but spelling of Jewish priestly breastplate thingy is Urim and Thummim.

did google which threw up all manner of weird and wacky results, as you may appreciate. You may need to rack you brain for some other little item to add to the search criterion to narrow down the possibilities.
