I don't read them in order. I get them from the library so I read all that my local had, now I order in the ones I've missed, and those I read in order.

I started with Holiday in Death, but realized then that there were books before it. I had to go to several book stores back then but got the ones before this one, and I've read them all in order since then. I also started my then teenage daughter on them because she picked one up one day, and now she waits for me to get the new ones, and mail them to her after I read it. She lives in another state so it's not as convenient, but she knows I have to have these books back or she's in trouble! I keep all of these!

I start from the beginning and in order. Except I miss the novella "Midnight in Death" and read it when I buy antho "Three in Death". The Indonesia version of In Death just until Seduction in Death, so I have been reading the original version until now :)

When I first started this series (am rereading after I stopped on about book ten) I began on the forth book, it kind of mucked things up a little as I know about certain events and when I read the first three after that there wasn't as much suspense as there should of been, but still great books!

I started out reading them out of order. I got them from the library and I read several before I realized it helped if you read them in order. A couple of years ago I did and it made a huge difference.

I'm reading them in order -- usually three or four in a row, then a break to read other stuff. I'm on a break right now, but I think that as soon as I finish my current book, i'm going back. I've got the itch.

Caro (and how cool is it that you share Roarke's assistant's name!), describing it as an itch is so dead on!

Started out of order over a few years didn't love the books at first but got hooked. I now have all the books and have read the series in order at least 4 times through Promise and of course read the newest ones as they came out.

I'm reading them in order. I keep a chronological list on my computer in a Word document and check them off as I go. The local branch of my library does not have all of the titles, but other branches of the library system do, so I get them put on hold and they ship them to my library who then calls me when they are in. Usually takes 3 days for a title to come in. I like to have 3 books at a time, and as soon as I start the third, I return 2 and order 2 more to be put on hold. I have spent my entire summer with my nose in a book in my free time.

When I started reading them out of order, I couldn't connect with the characters and didn't get very far in the one I had picked up. I later started at the beginning, and even when I skipped one here or there, I enjoyed them much more, having that backstory in place.

Betty, you sound like a woman on an organized mission! I sense that you don't ever want to be caught In Death bookless!
Heidi, I can completely understand you being lost and it had to have made a sizable difference when you got the character backgrounds.

No I started with Fantasy in Death because the librarian suggested I give JD Robb a try and it was the only one left on the shelf. Then I started at the beginning.

Fortunately, Arzella, there wasn't a lot revealed in Fantasy in Death to spoil your experience.
Becki, I was fortunate to do the same.

No, stumbled upon Visions in Death and thought it looked interesting so I picked it up. After a couple of books I started to look for the earlier ones but never tried to read them in order.

Have you checked out our Book List? It has all the books in order.
Has reading out of order affected your experience with the series?

I just did! Seconds ago! Discovered some more books I didn't know about. This is a REALLY good thing ; )
I just did! Seconds ago! Discovered some more books I didn't know about. This is a REALLY good thing ; )I think it would have been better to read them in order. I think I would have understood the progression of Roarke and Eve's relationship more. That's one of the best things about the series - the characters do mature and change.

Valerie, one thing to note, which is why reading in order makes such a difference in keeping up with character progression, is that each book represents only about one month of elapsed time in the series.

Valerie, I was just like you. It was several years before I even thought to read them in order. That is one of the reasons I love this series. Although it is really helpful to read them in order and you get a lot more out of it, they are all stand alone books and you can still follow along and get hooked on the series.

I'm trying reading them in order so I can avoid such problems like not being able to keep up with character progression... Although it's a little tricky task, it really worths it!

I just started Naked in Death because, after the discussion here, decided I want to re-read them in order. Besides it means more time with Eve. Just love and admire her.

Valerie, let us know if you think your second experience through the series makes a difference.
Mary, here's the link to our book list that we keep up to date and will help you stay on track.

Finished Naked in Death. I never realized that re-reading could be so satisfying. I see the Roarke and Eve relationship so differently on the second reading and am so much more impressed with how they care and respect each other.

It's so interesting too, to read the later books, then go back and see how rough this started, and difficult Eve found it to trust... how they strengthen each other... :)

As I have said in other folders DO NOT READ DELUSIONS WITHOUT READING THE OTHERS FIST. I think you would be lost. In the past, reading a book out of order wouldn't matter, but this book is different. I hope this is does not become a habit of Robb's. I HATE when books are not stand alones, even if they are in a series. To many times I pick up a book, because the synopsis looks interesting, then to find I don't understand a thing because it is part of a series or trilogy. I don't want to have to be aware what books I have to read before the book I want to read, if that makes any sense....

While a lot of these books can be read as a standalone, I think Robb has written the series with the intention of them being read in order. She wanted to slowly develop these characters.
I can understand how you feel, Dee, as I had quite a few missteps with some other series in the past. It's only after having joined Goodreads and Shelfari that I've been able to avoid doing this nowadays. One of the first things I do now is check and see if a new title is part of a series.

Agreed! I ALWAYS check to make sure I'm not picking up a book part-way through a series! I'd never dream of picking up book 35 in a series as a starting point!

Yeah, it's so annoying to realise that you've picked up a book that is part of a series and have either to stop it and start the series from the begining or finish it and then go back to read the previous ones! So, it's definithely better to check them out before picking them up!

I'm reading them in order, I just got hooked on this series last month and am so excited to keep reading. I'm about 40% through Ceremony In Death and it's probably my favorite book of the series so far.

You're right, Ceremony In Death is a great book, but I like Conspiracy In Death much more! And let me tell you something, almost every time you finish an In Death book you will be so fascinated with it that you'll think it is your fav; at least that's what happens with me!!!:D

Conspiracy in Death is my most favorite book in the series. Mary, you are exactly right in that your favorites change as you continue through the series.

Well, Jonetta I can't really tell if it's my favorite yet because I'm only in Reunion in Death and I'm many books behind, but I know that it has really made me an imression!

I started with Kindred and then immediately went to the beginning and read them through. Now I read them randomly.

Yes - I'm anal about reading any series in order. I have a book on my shelf that's #-2 in series and it sound GREAT, but since I don't have #-1 I won't read it.
