Dawn | 3250 comments Oh, I just re-read a lot. It is just another way to enjoy a book. I recently drove to Oregon and back, a 14 hour drive each way. I listened to two full ID books and two novellas just on the drive. It really made Central CA go by fast.

But eventually (if not already) you will come to a point where you do not have any new In Death books to read. That's what was meant.

I do prefer to read in order (I did start the In Death books in order) because I don't want to read something that will spoil an earlier book.

Waiting for a new In Death seems long and agonizing but there's always re-reads, which are fun.

I am now reading Innocent in Death. What I might do is read one per month (two if one is a short) until I've caught up. By then, there will be at least one more book out.

Good idea! I loved Innocent. Wanted to smack Roarke myself a few times in that one.

jswolf - we are doing a buddy read with one every three weeks or so with detailed discussion. We are about finished with book 4. Join us!

Carol (Mocha) | 85 comments I am just starting the series and loving it. Wish we could start a newbie thread to discuss them from beginning

message 109: by [deleted user] (new)

On the topic of audio. If you have a Kindle touch, the text to speech feature is really nice. yeah, it a computer voice but it does allow moving from "regular" reading to audio and back without the extra cost of getting both. (Which is likely why the new lighted Kindle doesn't have the feature)

message 110: by [deleted user] (new)

Carol, if you can catch up, the buddy read is being very careful to only discuss the books as if we have read no further than the current book we are on (book 4). There are a few in that discussion who are new to the series, so you won't be alone, but also have the insight of those of us setting the story for the nth time. We are reading about 1 book a month, so catching up should be too bad.

Another site I like to check out is Fict Fact... it gives a lot of the books and series in order and can help with other sources. I'm trying to attach a link - not much good at that, but here goes!
http://www.fictfact.com/index.aspx

Ok, so you can copy and paste this to get there - it's a really great resource - not as good as GoodReads, but...

You are not alone, JuliaC... I am exactly the same way. Actually makes me angry when I discover that I'm not reading in order... ok, so I have anger management issues. But only when it comes to books...

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15057 comments Mod
FictFact is a great resource for series management and I've used it for at least three years. I use is solely to keep track of my series by list.

message 116: by Donna (new)

Donna (adje8795) | 12 comments I like that it will email you about upcoming books in series that you are reading. It's a useful site.

message 117: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15057 comments Mod
That is really helpful, Donna. I pride myself on keeping up with this stuff as I track a lot of newsletters, etc., and every once in a while they surprise me.

And, if you're going to buy a book in a series, it would really help them if you click on the site you plan to purchase the book from (Amazon and whomever else is posted there). They are a non profit site and they get commissions when you launch from their site to purchase a book.

Just something good to know and do if you want to support them.

message 118: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 3250 comments Thanks for that information. I joined their site. What a cool idea.

message 121: by [deleted user] (new)

oooo that looks cool as I'm always reading various series and have a folder on my kindle called "check for more" so I remember which authors each month to check and see if a new book is out. That site looks like it's much easier! ;-)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15057 comments Mod
Beth, you'll be able to retire your folder!

message 125: by Chanel (new)

Chanel (bcsaturdai) In the past, I used to read what the library had in the series. I never realized, until now, that I have missed some books by reading in order. I am at Judgment in Death and I have read three books for the first time. I especially loved Ceremony and Vengeance for the first time.

message 126: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15057 comments Mod
Did you mean by not reading in order?

message 127: by Chanel (new)

Chanel (bcsaturdai) Jonetta wrote: "Did you mean by not reading in order?"

Yeah. That would make a lot more sense. Reading Judgment now and it's for the first time.

message 128: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15057 comments Mod
Chanel...when you finish all you've missed, have you given any thought to re-reading the series in order?

message 129: by Chanel (new)

Chanel (bcsaturdai) I already am. Never read Judgment in Death before, but have read the next book after that, Betrayal in Death, years ago. Now I am reading the series in order and finding books that I have missed before.

message 130: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11212 comments Mod
I can't imagine having read them out of order..I know each book will "stand" alone but the characters grow so much and so much happens book to book...but that's just me...I'm an "in order" nut! :)

I would imagine you're picking up on things that may have not registered the first time around.

message 132: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11212 comments Mod
You know, even now in rereading, I find I pick up on little things that I have missed before. Interesting. And part of the reason I'm enjoying the BR reread of the entire series.

message 133: by Chanel (new)

Chanel (bcsaturdai) I would do the BR but I read too fast. I read the first four books within a week and then finished the BR book in two days.

message 134: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11212 comments Mod
No problem...I understand. I read fast too, Chanel, when I'm reading a book the first time and am really consumed by it. I read 3 in 2 days not long ago. But, with this reread, I'm trying to pace myself plus, I have a lot of other commitments and have to spread myself pretty thin. I would enjoy discussing them with you anytime you want to drop in the BR's though...you don't have to reread them or be reading it at the same time as us to do that.

Okay. That's great to know. I consume books. I've read almost two hundred books so far for the Goodreads reading challenge.

One thing we all have in common is a love of reading and good books!

message 137: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Hinton Initially, I didn't start at the beginning. Then I decided that due to the continuing format of the books, I would start at the beginning. First I had to buy all of the books I was missing. After that away I went.

I bet it made a difference to you.

message 139: by Katie (new)

Katie Raeder (raederkatie) I got lucky and was able to find the first 33 books of the series(novellas included) on EBay in one auction at a steal of a price 17€! So I have been reading in order and am now on #28. Need to find 31-34 yet. I have 35 & 36.

message 140: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15057 comments Mod
Wow, Katie, that was a steal. I don't have to tell you that reading in order has a big payoff.

message 141: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11212 comments Mod
What a deal, Katie! Lucky you. Reading these books in order is the only way to go. Good luck with finding a deal on the rest of them.

message 142: by Dee (new)

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments When I like an author I tend to get everything the author has written. This one I didn't initially start at the beginning. I would read whatever book I found from her. Like you Katie, after I had the series I started back at the beginning. The funny thing is from all my previous out-of-order reading I had skipped Vengeance.

message 143: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11212 comments Mod
That is interesting, Dee. So Vengeance was actually the last book you read...other than releases that came after you had read the series?

message 144: by Dee (new)

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments No, not exactly. I would see it in the library, and think I have read that one and look for another one.

My husband was seriously ill at the time and one of my girl pals stayed with me. We are both huge readers and I got her turned on to the In Death series. She is the type that has to read from the beginning, at least the first read. So I would get the books at the library for her. Since she was reading the series I did too. That is when I read Vengeance. I was astonished I hadn't read it. I loved the book, and I now own it. We went on to read/reread the rest of the series. She had stopped at Fantasy, since that was the last book in the series at the time. BTW, she has now moved in with me and I got her turned on to the rest of the series.

message 145: by Katie (new)

Katie Raeder (raederkatie) I am only missing 4 books and then I own the entire series. #32, #33, #34, and #37. I am even shipping them back to the states when we move because I do NOT want to hunt them all down and buy them again.

I am currently reading Innocent In Death.
Innocent in Death (In Death, #24) by J.D. Robb

message 146: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 3250 comments I also did not start at the beginning. A friend loaned me Divided and Kindred. I read both of them, realized I was in the middle of a series and, went back to Naked. Sometimes I re-read the whole series, but mostly I read my favorites over and over again

message 147: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11212 comments Mod
I read these books a long time ago. I really don't remember exactly how I got lucky enough to read Naked first but I did. After that one, I went after the rest - in order, of course! I am definitely an in order type of girl.

message 148: by Vania (new)

Vania (vaniasofia) I am reading them in order and loving it. I started reading them about one year ago and just finished #29 but some that I really loved I already re-read and is amazing to see how the characters evolve.

message 149: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15057 comments Mod
I understand that completely, Vania! Just glad you've got so many ahead of you. Happy reading:)

The character development in this series is just awesome. Not just Roarke & Eve, but so many others that we see throughout the series. I love the interaction and banter between characters. Glad you are reading in order, Vania. You truly get the full picture of how this story evolves and the development of these characters.
