J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) I finally finished Mr. X! Praise God!

And now, onward to Life Expectancy! Which will be followed by Erin Healy's House of Mercy.

J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) Life Expectancy is proving to be quite awesome.

It's one of my favorite Koontz books.

J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) I just finished The Sanctuary by Ted Dekker. It wasn't my favorite, but was still a thought-provoking read.

I've only been reading a little bit each day--and totally skipped yesterday since I was doing online promo stuff. It usually takes me a week to get through an average-sized novel, and this one is ginormous!

message 65: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Yeah, The Talisman is quite a tome.:) What do you think so far, anyway?

J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) Dustin wrote: "Yeah, The Talisman is quite a tome.:) What do you think so far, anyway?"

I like it! I'm seeing some similarities with The Stand and The Gunslinger, but I guess that's okay since King wrote all of them. I'm not really seeing any Straub in The Talisman. I wonder how much work each of them did on it.

I have no idea. I cannot distinguish King from Straub, either. I'm not at all surprised that you found similarities to some of his other work, as most of King's work is connected in some way or another.

message 68: by Dustin (new)

Dustin I have gotten a bit further into The Talisman, and I'm loving every word! Though in some places, I do think it's a little wordy, but that's not a huge factor for me. After all, Straub and King's writing is utterly amazing, brilliant, and awe inspiring, IMO!

Hi, good day, Tracy!!

I thought you'd be interested in knowing that I've finished Inheritance (about 2 weeks ago, actually.) Here's my review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 70: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I have still to finish Inheritance Dustin. I just didn't get into this one like I did Eragon and the others.

Justin Sherman (justinjoesherman) | 12 comments Just finished Nightmare by Robin Parrish. Very interesting read that left me researching theology on ghosts vs demons.

An eclectic mix of genres and authors. Divergent, Mortal, Perelandra, Homemade Haunting, Zoo, and a little more.

J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) Afloat by Erin Healy! And it has a pretty cover, too:

Well, since murder/mystery's considered (by some) to be horror, I guess it counts that I'm reading The King by Steven James.

Justin Sherman (justinjoesherman) | 12 comments Reading Angel of Wrath by Bill Myers. First thing I've read by him.

message 81: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinlayne) | 20 comments Hello, Jason and Justin!
Wow, people posting in this group again! I am so pleased! I was afraid everyone had abandoned it. I am not reading any horror right now. I am reading Do What Jesus Did, by Robby Dawkins . . . although to the Devil, I expect it is horror. For if we were all successfully doing what Jesus did--healing the sick, casting out demons, and letting His love show to sinners--he would be horrified indeed. I will be reviewing the book, but for the Portland Book Review. They send you the book free that you will review. They are not ebooks but real paper. Which is good because I don't have an e-reader, and I spend enough time on the computer as it is without my having to read books in this crazy chair as well. (I take books with me on the bus!)

Now WRITING horror, even Christian horror--that I have been doing, in the form of a new blog about my series-in-progress, AVS: the Anti-Vampirism Society (robinlayneauthor.wordpress.com) and I have done some reworking of my extended synopsis of the first book. I am wondering what to add to the blog, now that I have about 13 followers. I have some ideas for a few entries, but they are not yet ripe in my mind. (And I've been busy with job search activities)
I hope this group gets active again. Enjoy your books!

Justin Sherman (justinjoesherman) | 12 comments Do What Jesus Did...is horror to the devil. I like that - its all about perspective, right? Thanks, Robin, checked out your blog and trying to post more myself. Interesting - I recently had a story published in Night to Dawn, a vampire-centric magazine. That particular story of mine was not Christian, so not promoting it. Just saying the connection is interesting...cheers!

message 83: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinlayne) | 20 comments Ever read the original Dracula, by Bram Stoker? Some folks would be surprised that it's pretty Christian in perspective. Nowadays, there is a phobia among many Christians against anything about vampires. People are saying that if you read or write about them you are "opening yourself up to evil spirits." I don't say in my stories that it's good to be a vampire; I don't preach that evil is good or good evil. I keep evil in its place--you must fight it. But it isn't easy, because all of us have some evil in us. If we write honestly about the evil in ourselves, are we opening ourselves to evil spirits, or opening ourselves to God to chase them out? I hope to write about this in my blog, but am having a hard time deciding how to do so without mentioning any names or making anyone look bad. But they would certainly make ME look bad if they knew what I was writing--especially if they saw me having any success at it. For me it is not a question of what they would do to me and doing it to them first. It is a question of--well, doing what Jesus did--loving others no matter what. I am waiting for guidance on how best to speak this truth in love.

Under the Dome by Stephen King, Bid the Gods Arise by Chris Mullin. Speaking of vampires... planning on finishing 'Salem's Lot after I finish UtD.

Robin (robinlayne) | 20 comments Now reading The Sociopath Next Door The Ruthless Versus the Rest of Us by Martha Stout I wonder what all those commentaries on it that all have the same cover as one another? Are they all really books or what?

message 86: by Jason (new)

Jason (jokers_knight_out) | 58 comments Mod
I think that would be stock photos. A book I have, Fear Has A Name by Creston Mapes, has the exact same cover as some mystery book I've seen by Karen Thomas, except Karen's book cover is heavily purple-tinted.

Well, currently going for Koontz's The Taking (and it's an incredible sci-fi read!) as well as some Thrasher (40), King (Doctor Sleep), and Day (A Throne of Bones). I have my reading cut out for me.
