J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) A place to discuss our current reads, "Christian" or not. And if not, does anything about it stand out as being Christian?

message 2: by J.S. (new)

J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) I just finished The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris. Very suspenseful, but I wouldn't consider it a Christian read. :)

message 3: by Dustin (new)

Dustin No, that is definitely not a Christian read, J.S. It's a great novel, though, IMO!

Anyway, I'm actually reading Illusion, by Frank Peretti. Has anyone else read it?

message 4: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I haven't Dustin. What's it about?

message 5: by Dustin (last edited Jul 31, 2012 09:31AM) (new)

Dustin Illusion

I'll let you know once I'm done, Tracy (and everyone else that's interested.) Though right now, my feelings are mixed..

message 6: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Oh man, my library has this one! Surprise! I put it on my TBR.

message 7: by Dustin (new)

Dustin From what I've read so far, Tracy, I think you're going to love it! Illusion is like nothing I've ever read.. ever!

message 8: by J.S. (new)

J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) Today I started reading Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King. I originally thought it was a novel but it turns out that it is four "long" stories in one volume.

message 9: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Enjoy it, J.S.:)

message 10: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I have just finished Rapture (Rapture, #1) by Phillip W. Simpson and this book was fantastic. It is exactly what the title implies, the rapture.

message 11: by Justin (new)

Justin Sherman (justinjoesherman) | 12 comments I just finished reading Full Dark, No Stars about a month ago. A Good Marriage was the best of the 4 novellas, in my opinion. Why he called himself "Beadie" was very interesting. Nothing can match the ones in Four Seasons, though.

message 12: by Justin (new)

Justin Sherman (justinjoesherman) | 12 comments Are you done with Illusion, yet, Dustin? How does it match up with Peretti's earlier work?

Dustin Justin wrote: "Are you done with Illusion, yet, Dustin? How does it match up with Peretti's earlier work?"

Hi, Jason!

I'm not done with Illusion yet, and quite frankly, I'm not all that impressed. I'll definitely be reviewing this one, though (as I've gotten into the habit of reviewing all the books I read.) As for how it compares to Peretti's earlier work I couldn't tell you because I haven't read any of them. Although my wife was absolutely blown away by Piercing the Darkness.

Thank you for asking.:)

message 14: by Dustin (last edited Aug 13, 2012 10:02AM) (new)

Dustin Oh thank goodness, there are only 106 pages left of Illusion, then I'll FINALLY be done!!!

And it is DONE!!!

message 15: by Justin (new)

Justin Sherman (justinjoesherman) | 12 comments Looking forward to a review of this one!

message 17: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I am reading Sweet Blood of Mine by John Corwin who I haven't read before and I love it. John is a fantastic writer and his humor can't be matched. He is an indie author so you are limited to access his novels but if you do have an opportunity to read this I highly recommend it.

message 21: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I am reading the Moon Dwellers by Davis Estes and Endlessly by Kiersten White. They are both very good.

Currently reading two different kinds of religious thrillers- Babylon Rising Babylon Rising: The Edge of Darkness the Edge of Darkness andSanctus, along with a wicked awesome psych/spiritual thriller, The Forsaken. Interesting times ahead of me.

Sounds like great fun, Jason!

I've heard great things, J.S. And coming from Dekker, it's bound to be great, IMO!

message 26: by J.S. (new)

J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) I finished The Bride Collector! Here is my review:

message 27: by J.S. (new)

J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) The other day I started reading Twilight Eyes by Dean Koontz. It's a lot like his Odd Thomas series, but was written two decades earlier, so I guess the Odd Thomas series is like Twilight Eyes. I've also noticed that his earlier works are much steamier than his current ones. [blushes]

Not only that, J.S., but Koontz's earlier material is much better than his current stuff, IMO..

That too! Though I did love What the Night Knows, even though it got a lot of bad reviews.

I haven't read anything new by him since Frankenstein #3..

J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) Working on We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson. It is so creepy. lol

message 32: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Hi, J.S!

Shirley Jackson's such an amazing writer, IMO. It sounds like you're enjoying it.:)

I sure am! I read "The Lottery" back in grade school and then last year I read her novel The Haunting of Hill House. Loved them both!

Btw, are you the Dustin who "liked" my FB page the other day? If so, I just wanted to say Welcome!

Yes, as a matter of fact, I did 'Like' your Facebook page. Thank you for welcoming me, J.S!:) Please feel free to add me as a friend.

Ohh, The Lottery is amazing, IMO, and I think I've read The Haunting of Hill House. I love them, as well.

Tracy J.S. wrote: "Working on We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson. It is so creepy. lol"

I listened to this on audiobook and it is definitely different.

message 37: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Aside from being different, what are your thoughts on it, Tracy?

message 38: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I was very good. I enjoyed it. A lot of mental issues going on, psychological. I like those types of books which is why I absolutely love Shutter Island. That is one of the best novels I have read in a while. I believe I gave it five stars and we know how stingy I am with stars.

message 39: by Dustin (last edited Sep 22, 2012 12:37PM) (new)

Dustin Yes, I certainly do, Tracy.:) I still haven't read any of Lehane's work.
I'm glad you enjoyed it.

message 40: by J.S. (new)

J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) I'm reading Mr. X by Peter Straub.

message 41: by Dustin (new)

Dustin How is it so far, J.S?

message 42: by J.S. (new)

J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) Dustin wrote: "How is it so far, J.S?"

It's kind of icky, if you ask me. And a little hard to follow. Straub's novel Ghost Story trumps this one by far.

message 43: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Well I hope it gets better for you soon. I've heard good things about Mr. X, actually.:)

There was one scene where (view spoiler) and now I can't get the nasty out of my head.

message 45: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Wow, really J.S!?! That is pretty disgusting!

J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) Dustin wrote: "Wow, really J.S!?! That is pretty disgusting!"

That's what I thought! lol I'm about halfway through the book now. When I'm finished I'm going to start reading Life Expectancy by Dean Koontz. (The other Dustin told me that he would read my book only if I read Life Expectancy, so of course I had to comply!)

message 47: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Well despite the disgusting scene, I do hope you enjoy it.:)
I've yet to read Life Expectancy, and I don't know if I ever will. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it, though, once you're done.
Oh, I've been meaning to add your book to my "to-read" list.

Life Expectancy is a hoot J.S. It is one of my favorite Koontz books. I also love Relentless, I read them both at least once a year.
