Sarah | 367 comments Definitely not. I got weepy at the end of Julia Quinn's Lost Duke of Wyndham. I don't really know why...

Lori (moderatrixlori) I'm a big crier! Archeron just about killed me.

Melissa | 1245 comments For me, New Moon about killed me. It's rare for me to cry during a book, but it has happened. Oddly enough, it's usually an young adult book that gets to me more than the romance stuff.

message 105: by new_user (new)

new_user It happens to me too occasionally. I still remember bawling when reading A Ring of Endless Light. That affected me so much.

I think I'm more engrossed in the story in books compared to film. Like when I finish reading an emotional novel I might be emotional myself, LOL. It's kind of silly considering I'm not an impressionable or sentimental person at all.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Whichever I read first: Acheron and Falling really had me going.

message 107: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyhill) It always happens to me. I cry at the Budweiser commercials with the Clydesdales. I'm such a dork. I cried during New Moon like my heart was broken. I also cried during Acheron, because of all he went through. I also discovered, it's really hard to continue reading while your sobbing.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) *spoiler alert*
I cried in Harry Potter when Dumbledore died. I had to go back and read that part again later to make sure I didn't miss anything.

I'm entering more and more of my serial harlequin romances into goodreads. I know havn't read all of these, probably not even half. Trouble is, I can't remember most of the ones I have read. lol A few look familiar so most are going in labeled as unread since I'm not sure. Trouble is.... some look darn good but I can't read them right now as I have too many challenge lists to work on. lol I have found quite a few books that start with "Q" that would fit the A-Z Book Challenge. lol

Just an observation while entering tons of Harlequins.... sheikh's are becoming more popular. And the spelling over time has changed from sheik (old) to sheikh (new). And old books had millionaire's in them, but with inflation, lol, new books have billionaire's in them (a million must not be enough anymore. lol).

message 109: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Good books that you are emotionally invested in should make you cry. It probably makes the authors happy read that they have touched their readers in such a way.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments I have cried more reading than watching a sad movie. Although I still cry at the end of Color Purple.

message 111: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Forest Gump makes me cry everytime I watch. When his momma dies and then when Jenni dies. No matter what I am doing when I am watching I cry.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Aww Stephanie. I never really sat and watched that. But I love Tom Hanks. I think Castaway was my favorite ("new") movie of Hanks.

message 113: by ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (last edited Feb 11, 2009 01:41PM) (new)

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I havn't seen Castaway yet. I loved the movie Forrest Gump. I just saw at a list from the library that Forrest Gump was based on a novel by Winston Groom, so might go looking for it. Especially if we have a read a book that was turned into a movie category.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Oh that would be a good challenge =) I'd read Flowers in the Attic again probably.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) OKay, I'm being corrupted by people on Goodreads!! lol Based on suggestions from here, I've picked up from the library:

Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz
The Princess Bride by William Goldman
The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

and off my own shelves (own but havn't read):

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin

Lord only knows when I will get to all these in amongst my other reading for various challenges, plus the other 21 books I have out from the library. lol

message 116: by tosca (new)

tosca (catatonichataholic) | 742 comments The older I get the more I find I cry during movies, commercials and books. I read Dorothy Koomson's 'My best friend's girl' and bawled my eyes out for a good chunk of the book...it's all been downhill since I turned 30 LOL.

When I discovered this reading group I thought all of my Christmases had come at once - I would keep it up all day long at work and pop in and out every few mins and refresh the page to see updates. Now I find that work has blocked my access to the forums GRRR - I have to be content with racing over to the 1 pc that isn't on the staff network and use that every hour or so LOL

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I went to my Friends of the Library Romance book sale today. Paperbacks were 50 cents each, hardbacks $1. I got 23 paperbacks and 1 hardback. That would have been $12.50. If I joined the Friends of the Library for $3 and bought their nice bookbag for $10, I could fill it with 24 books free. So for the extra 50 cents, I got the bookbag and joined. With tax it came to $13.65.

This is what I got:

Angela Lansbury's Positive Moves by Angela Lansbury (fitness book)
Dream trilogy collection by Nora Roberts (This is Daring to Dream, Holding the Dream and Finding the Dream. I have them as seperate books but for 50 cents bought the larger (5x7in) trilogy that will be easier to read and I can sell the 3 individual paperbacks).
Truly, Madly Manhattan by Nora Roberts (includes Local Hero and Dual Image. I bought the 5x7in larger to read edition and can now sell my regular sized paperback.)
Almost A Gentleman by Pam Rosenthal
Trading Places by Fern Michaels
Fool Me Once by Fern Michaels
Charming Lily by Fern Michaels
Comfort and Joy by Fern Michaels
The Nosy Neighbor by Fern Michaels
Five Golden Rings by Fern Michaels
Lightning by Danielle Steel
Flower Girls by Janet Dailey
Western Man by Janet Dailey
The Passions of Chelsea Kane by Barbara Delinsky (Goodreads author)
More Than Friends by Barbara Delinsky
The Dream Comes True by Barbara Delinsky
Wait Until Midnight by Amanda Quick
The Touch of Aphrodite by Joanna Mansell (Postcards from Europe series)
McClairen's Isle The Ravishing One by Connie Brockway (I have 2 in this series and was looking for the third. Unfortunately this is one I already have. lol Oh well, goes in the garage sale box.)
Her Officer and Gentleman by Karen Hawkins
A Wicked Gentleman by Jane Feather (I knew this looked good for a reason. lol I have it but havn't read it yet, so in the garage sale box it goes.)
The Husband List by Victoria Alexander
Castles in the Air by Christina Dodd
Made-To-Order Wife by Judith McWilliams (Ditto above comment. Had this one. lol)

Okay, so I ended up with 3 books I already had. lol (Only a loss of $1.50 which I might get back at my garage sale this summer.) I bought 2 books I already had to replace others in my library as the 5x7 inch editions of the two Nora Roberts books will be easier and nicer to read. They didn't have any other books to fill gaps in my collections of my favorite authors because I probably have most of the easy to find books. I added to my Fern Michaels collection considerably, and found a few odd Janet Dailey's to add as well. I'm also slowly putting together a really old Harlequin Postcards from Europe series from 1993. I have 10 of the 15 books in the series now.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Okay, I took all those duplicate books, or books I replaced along with a few other duplicates I found in the house while putting my home library into GoodReads and took them into the used bookstore. I got a good bit of credit, spread over a few different categories. (Must use literature credit for litarture, children's books for children's, fiction for fiction, etc.). I took my son with me and let him get one book. That used up my children's credit. For literature credit, I picked up Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen. For fiction credit (I still have $11 left to use) I picked up The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. (Book is marked retail for $14. They resell at half price which is $7, and they let me use $4.87 credit, so it ended up costing me $2.13)

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) In another group there is a dicussion thread for The Princess Bride. The fairy tale part of the book I find enjoyable but I dislike the author's play on the reader when he speaks as if it's himself, puts in bits of the truth so its believeable, then fabricates fiction to go around it all. I don't find it amusing, more insulting that he's pointedly trying to mislead the reader. It ruins the rest of a good book. When I posted this, someone went off on me (in a big paragraph) saying among other things that even Stephen King was in on the joke so what was the big deal (that's boiled down) and if I wanted something unfun to read she'd recommend some biographies of Hitler for me. (That part is a direct quote.) Can you believe that! ARGH! I posted back that we were suppose to be able to discuss the book wether we liked it or not, and I found her Hitler reference uncalled for and offensive.

Thanks. Just needed to vent a minute. I just can't believe people like that. We are allowed differing opinions and we shouldn't be hasseled over them. I found her remark very rude and offensive. (She isn't a member here, I checked. lol) I don't know if moderators can do this but I emailed the moderator of that group to let her know and asked if that last offensive line could be edited out (before it upsets anyone else) and then she can remove my response at that time as well.

message 120: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 367 comments Well, that's no fun. :( Everyone is entitled to her own opinion; and everyone should be cool enough to disagree respectfully. I did happen to love Princess Bride, but I'm sure as shootin' not going to berate someone who hasn't enjoyed it.

I have a 20-page rule for when I'm not enjoying a book, BriansGirl. It dates back to something I read in a biography of Western author Louis L'Amour. He said something to the effect that life was too short and there were too many good books out there to waste on one he wasn't enjoying. He'd give it 20 pages to hook him, then move on. Didn't sound like a bad idea to me, so I do the same.

I say read what you want.

message 121: by ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (last edited Feb 14, 2009 05:02PM) (new)

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I don't mind the fairy tale part of the book, just the part where the author is supposidlly speaking to you, and he's making it up. He puts in just enough truth to try to fool you and that's the part that I don't like. My library's edition of the book has the first chapter of Buttercup's Baby, the sequel added to it (which was never written). That's 50 pages plus 20 pages of an explanation before it. The explanation is the author talking about how it was supposidly written, Morgenstern who doesn't exist. He writes as if the country of Florin is real. However, he throws in that he is fighting Stephen King to write the sequel, who of course, is a real person, and the author really did write the screenplay for the movie Misery based off King's book. So just enough truth to throw you off that he made up the bits around it. I find all that fluff just annoying because he's trying to trick you into believing all of it. I'd rather just read the fairy tale good bits.

Perhaps I shouldn't have started with the 20 page explanation for the sequel's first chapter for the book that was never written, and then the 16 page introduction to the book itself (which is, again, mostly made up.) I'm only now starting to read that actual first chapter of the book, and have yet to get to anything that's the fairy tale story. In other words, I havn't gotten into any of the good bits of the fairy tale yet (none at all, lol) and have just read 36 pages of the author blowing smoke. lol

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments hey all i am in Hemet CA now. tired. but STILL checking messages lol. this is Wi Fi access so i may not be on as much until i get personal access. still reading tho, always. had a chance to edit my story (tentively)called THE JOANNA FILES. Given the way my mind works I'd say you have to read it to classify it =) There's a little of everything. No sex though. LOL. For some reason my characters are all celibate.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) oh oh! lol I got an autographed bookmark in the mail from the author for a new series. http://www.lornabarrett.com/index.html She writes Booktown Mysteries series. I'm waiting for the first two books so I can read them.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) WOOHOO! My first reads book arrived today via UPS. (I won it on goodreads). It's Lethal Legacy A Novel by Linda Fairstein.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Went to the Hemet, CA public LIB. I wish it was closer to home. But perhaps its a good thing its a few streets over. LOL. It is HUGE. At least a block and a half 2 blocks. And 2 stories from what I could see. I am going to love going through their catalouge. Plus, I saw about 4-5 romance authors as New Books! So I think they'd be willing to order some for me or ILL. Woohoo.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Kenjii wrote: "Went to the Hemet, CA public LIB. I wish it was closer to home. But perhaps its a good thing its a few streets over. LOL. It is HUGE. At least a block and a half 2 blocks. And 2 stories from what ..."

I hope you're settling in okay at your new home. I see you've already checked out the library. Any used bookstores in the area?

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Briansgirl: From the few streets I have been down I have spotted 2. Plus there is one 5 mins. (walking distance) from my house that excepts her books back (that you buy) for credit. So its like recycling. U can return books and pick out books for credit. That is what her signs said and she said that as well =) I spent about 30 mins. Just browsing. Her fiction section is mostly romance and female thriller writers like Heather Graham and Carla Neggers. So I am going to have a blast looking through the shelves there whenever I go to that plaza. My folks know I love books and take me to the bookstores like once a week. Though with my count-off challenge, I'll be just browsing. Taking notes =) hehe.

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Looks like your settling in well, Kenjii.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Yz: It is gorgeous here. Palm trees galore! I love it. It's not quite like North San Diego. The weather is about the same though. California cool. The town itself is very convenient. I am going to love exploring =)

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Is anyone else having problems logging into Goodreads? I used to be able to get in any time of day but for the last couple of days it'll work for 5 minutes then pages won't load for an hour or two. I just keep trying throughout the day and sometimes I can get in for a few minutes and other times I just can't get anything on the site to load.

message 131: by Nichole (DirrtyH) (new)

Nichole (DirrtyH) (dirtyh) I haven't had that exact problem, but I couldn't get to the site at all for several hours today. I got sent to a page from my internet provider saying it had either been moved or was unavailable...
it was really frustrating. I have become seriously addicted to this site! I was really excited to be let back on.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I couldn't get on for hours at a time either. Usually the load bar gets about halfway then just never can finish. I wouldn't get as far as a page won't load screen. After getting addicted to checking groups here often, it's been frustrating.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments I am not sure if this is goodreads.com problem or not but try clearing your browser cache (when you surf, every page you go to is saved. That seriously slows down your browser and can cause webpages to crash). Go to tools (on your browser)> internet options> clear temp. internet files and cookies. I had loaded my new ISP and then could not sign into goodreads even after clearing the cache. I use Google Chrome (faster than IE). But had to use IE until goodreads would load again.

But yeah I felt withdrawls after a couple hours. IE is so slow that I hated waiting for each thread to load so I just wait a few hours and checked back. GOODreads was back up and running on Google chrome within hours.

message 134: by new_user (new)

new_user Man, I wish I was in North San Diego right now, LOL. The weather here is hideous.

message 135: by Jess (new)

Jess lol.. I definitely find myself crying in books. If it's a sad part I will most assuredly cry lol.. but if it's a good part I smile a lot and say "awwww" lol.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Kenjii wrote: "I am not sure if this is goodreads.com problem or not but try clearing your browser cache (when you surf, every page you go to is saved. That seriously slows down your browser and can cause webpage..."

I've done that several times Kenjii. I've asked a few others to check out Goodreads and they couldn't get into it at the times I was having problems as well. That's what started making me think it was this site not my pc. And I don't have any problems accessing any other site.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Briansgirl: Yeah. I figured it was a site problem rather than browser. Sometimes ppl don't know to do that tho =)

Did you let GR know you were having problems signing in from X to X hours?

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments They need better servers. I think they've reached capacity. Or maybe there was just a flux of users at the time causing a traffic jam.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I was wondering if it was just because their servers were overloaded. I've recently joined facebook and you can add goodreads to your profile page there. So if the regular site is down, I can try accessing it that way, through a side door so to speak, and see if it works. I didn't let them know I was having problems.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments It does not happen often here. But there has been an occasion where GR just shuts down. They seem to do a lot of maintenance. So they know what the demand is on their site =)

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Who's on right now? I am going through serperating my books by:

Wanted on someone's WL (so that I can read those and post them to be able to swap them for my WL books!)

Reader's Challenge

Erotic Romance

PNR and other

LOL!

message 142: by Jess (new)

Jess good luck organizing everything Kenjii!! everytime I try to organize my books and cut down my TBR list it never works. lol. You can look through my books if you want.. we have similar tastes, you might find some books to add to your WL

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments Ack! I need no more books added, lol. But thanks I will take a gander. I need a break anyway. Been cruising the fun and games posts.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Did anyone else see the new series CASTLE on ABC tonight. It ran after Dancing with the Stars. A male novelist helps a female police detective solve a crime. In the first episode, someone copied the murders from his thriller novels as a copycat so he was a consultant. At the end, he starts a new series of novels with the female police detective as his muse/inspiration and arranges to tag along with her for awhile. During the show, he discussed how as a novelist he'd have the character do this or that, and try to figure out how the killer was thinking. I found that very interesting.

It was also fun that he had a weekly poker night with other well known authors. Only one was mentioned by name, Patterson.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments I wanted to watch CASTLE but I was tired and didn't stay up for it. thought if I can I'll try and watch online. Looks good and I like the actor playing Castle.

message 146: by Nichole (DirrtyH) (new)

Nichole (DirrtyH) (dirtyh) Oh, yes, Nathan Fillion is always delectable... and it looks like he has plenty of opportunity to ooze his natural charm in this show. I remember all the way back to when he used to play Joey on One Life to Live...

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments I like being able to rent DVD on TV or watch in online. On my time. I know that Castle looked great but I just could not force myself to stay up,lol. That is great its got fans. Perhaps it'll become a big hit for ABC.
