Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments I think you could just report on the thread, Robin?

Suzie: I'm not sure what you're asking. Do you mean if a trilogy can also be used for the 'something old something new something borrowed something blue' bit?

message 102: by Mikki (last edited Jun 11, 2012 06:12PM) (new)

Mikki Snoozie Suzie wrote: "But if u read a trilogy can that fit in elsewhere?"

Suzie, yes! You'll receive 5 points for each book read (whatever category they fit in) PLUS 5 extra points for reading the trilogy. If you should read more than three in a series you will get an additional point (so 6 instead of 5) for those.

Does that make sense? :)

message 103: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Started something borrowed (from the library): Gone Girl.

message 104: by Maria (new)

Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments WAIT, Mikki, so reading the entire Wizard of Oz series gets me not only 16 points for the trilogy (14 books), but also 5 or 10 points per book, for the Something Old Category?

Because if so... there's 160 more points.

message 105: by Joe (new)

Joe | 93 comments Thanks for the clarification, Judy. As long as the story in the book and the audio version are the same, then it counts?

I feel like I'm letting down my toppler teammates, but life keeps getting in the way for me! I had to take my wife to the ER today. She was having excruciating pain. Turns out it was her gall bladder! She's home now and doing better, but will apparently need surgery soon... Before we left I totally thought about running and getting my iPad to do some reading in the hospital, but I thought it would be better for my marriage to not run back in the house while she was in pain in the car!

Good news - they have tea in hospitals, so by days' end I had 7 cups of tea. Sadly not much to report reading-wise. I'm looking forward to a less eventful day tomorrow - and more reading (god willing!)

message 106: by Robin (new)

Robin | 263 comments oh Joe. I hope you're wife feels better soon. I have had my gall bladder out. It is actually a pretty common thing apparently.

Is it too late to join a team? Perhaps I should join the team Maria is on...you know since she's going to be racking up all those points. ;) ;) haha just kidding.

No reading, or tea drinking to report for me. Though it doesn't really matter I suppose. I am going to probably start listening to The American Heiresstonight though. I checked it out from my library/audiobook online...downloaded and transferred to ipod.

message 107: by Maria (new)

Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments Joe, I hope your wife feels better soon!

The Topplers would love to have you, Robin! Besides, with Almeta and Debra drinking so much tea... I'm trying, but running up and downstairs with a cold is annoying. At least I'm getting enough fluids into me!

Also did the math and found out that my waterbottle holds 20 oz... which means 2.5 cups of tea. Very happy, since that means 4 waterbottles= 10 cups, not 5.

Switched to reading The Green Fairy Book with my eyes instead of my ears, I'll get to halfway then finish The Hobbit.

Get those thoughts out of your head! Worry about the important thing at hand and we'll gladly accept your 7 cups of tea!

Mikki Maria wrote: "WAIT, Mikki, so reading the entire Wizard of Oz series gets me not only 16 points for the trilogy (14 books), but also 5 or 10 points per book, for the Something Old Category?..."

Uhm not quite...as I understand it: For the first 3 books in a trilogy you will receive 5 points for each (15 points). Which earns you another 5 points for completing a trilogy. That comes to 20 points.

Every book after the inital three will be worth 6 points each.

message 110: by Maria (new)

Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments As I understood it, you get five points for the first three books in a trilogy, and an extra point for each.

5 pts for reading a trilogy (in addition to the single book total); an additional point for each book in a series over 3 books long

Now, the question:

Can we add the 'Something Old' points to that? (As to the 6 points, it would be 11 points, because completing a goal a second, third, etc time nets double the points)

double points for each additional completion of a goal

message 111: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Got over 630 miles closer to my mom's house today, but drank no tea and only started a book. Sorry. :(
Off to report the book I finished in bed last night...

Mikki Oh, goodness, that's a question for Judy. I get what you're asking, but I'm not sure of the answer. I'm eager to know!

Hi, Sue! I see my midnight marauder is up and ready to go. You know that this is our second-wind hour! :) I loved Welty's story today, but I'll talk to you about it over there.

11 cups finished.

message 122: by Kat (new)

Kat (katzombie) | 2478 comments *sigh* work again. I have to do job interviews today so there won't be a lot of sneaky reading. But I have to start early so I might leave early and get in an extra hour before Mr Kat comes home.

Must remember to drink more tea!

message 123: by Sue (new)

Sue I did finish another book today. Not a long one but a good one and counts for my borrowed. Also read more in my big book. Not a tea drinker so I have to read.

Ha ha, thank you Mikki and some invisible headphones so that she doesn't notice I'm not listening. :p

message 127: by Maria (new)

Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments I just totalled the Toppler's points so far... hopefully I did it all correctly: 137.5

The Tipplers have 102.5

However, it was all mental arithmetic and I didn't do anything official-like, just a quick tallying up. Tipplers might have more, Topplers might have less. ^_^

message 128: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60042 comments Maria wrote: "Janice, dear, you need your rest. No need to finish the book tonight!"

So says a person on the opposite team. LOL!

No worries. I completed it and I'm still wide awake thanks to the nap I had earlier.

message 129: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Question. I understand the double points for the additional completion of a goal. I assume that's only the points for the book (from 5 doubled to 10 points). What about the page count for that book? I would assume points for that would stay at the original level, and not double, but want to make sure.

message 130: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Another question :)
Is there a minimum number of pages for a book to qualify?

You only get double points for completing the second book in one category. eg: if you read two different books that qualify as Something Old.

Each book would be scored for pages read on its own merit. One book could have been 410 pages, earning you 3 points. The second book could have been 350 pages, earning you 2 points. At least, that's the way I understand it.

message 132: by Mikki (last edited Jun 12, 2012 01:08AM) (new)

Mikki That makes sense. I read two older books--for the first I put 6 points (goal + under 300pgs) and for the second completed I doubled and gave myself 12. But maybe it should only be 10?

Also, what the heck is a cuppa?

1/2 pt for each cuppa drunk by a team member
25 bonus pts for the team when they reach 100 cuppas as a team.
10 pts additional for the first team to drink 100 cups of tea.

I'll pretty much drink anything, but first I need to know what it is...I might like cuppa better than tea. :/

message 133: by Maria (new)

Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments jaxnsmom: The way I understood it from Judy when I asked was the page count points are doubled as well-- as well as the second trilogy.

Judy said: Maria said: Double points for each additional completion of a goal-- what gets doubled? What sort of goal?

Let's say you complete the "Something Borrowed" goal twice, you will get double points for the second completion.

And yes, points for goals completed are in addition to pages read. So it is possible to rack up lots of points for multiple completions. Say you complete The Whole Enchilada twice = Big Points! Or if you read two series = Huge Points!

Btu I may have misunderstood.

Mikki: 'cuppa' is slang for 'cup of tea', deriving from 'cuppa tea'

Tea totals for each team:

TOPPLERS: 75

TIPPLERS: 86

FORWARD, BRAVE WOMEN AND MEN!

Mikki Maria wrote: "Mikki: 'cuppa' is slang for 'cup of tea', deriving from 'cuppa tea'..."

Yeah, I pretty much figured that but what I didn't understand was the extra team points.

25 bonus pts for the team when they reach 100 cuppas as a team.
10 pts additional for the first team to drink 100 cups of tea.

What's the difference here or am I just missing something obvious?

25 points whenever you reach 100 cups as a team (both teams can win this).
10 pts for the FIRST team to drink 100 cups (only one team can win this).

The cuppas and cups in there mean the same.

message 137: by Maria (new)

Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments Mikki, you must be tired. Ten points for the FIRST team to reach 100 cups of tea. 25 just because the team reaches 100.

I've got 21 cups I haven't put up yet... so we need 5 more (as Topplers) to win!

Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments Could you recount again? Just put my things in for the day... since I'm not sure if I'll finish CYRANO DE BERGERAC tonight.

26 cups of tea...

And having noodle soup for dinner. *headdesk*

Ironing days Wednesday and Thursday so audiobooks are going to get a thrashing. I hope.

Off to see if I can finish CYRANO before 10pm.

message 142: by Maria (new)

Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments I was hoping to be able to read a 28 pager... but at the same time was going to read a 751 pager... so I guess it balanced out. Of course the 28 pager was published in January 2009, so that's out.

message 143: by Maria (new)

Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments Just have to note that in Act I of CYRANO DE BERGERAC tipplers are mentioned. I sniggered a bit.

message 144: by Maria (new)

Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments Yes, I know. I'm tired, of course, which is why I feel the need to make pointless posts-- it's a LOVELY method of procrastination. XD

Should be able to finish CYRANO before bed, luckily!

message 145: by Maria (new)

Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments A hundred point... bonus? I... thought... it was... ten!

*faint*

Okay, that's it. Back to reading. A bit sad to know that 26 cups of tea did not help.

Grudging congratulations to the Tipplers! We'll beat you yet!

message 146: by Maria (new)

Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments At least all that tramping up and down stairs to reach the little room did SOMETHING.

Tomorrow not much tea for me-- just 10 cups, since we'll be visiting museums.

I'll wear pants, however, and sneak the iPod out whenever possible to read some more!

WE CAN DO IT, TOPPLERS! 60 points is nothing!

message 147: by Maria (last edited Jun 12, 2012 07:50AM) (new)

Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments True.

TOPPLERS: SIX POINT FIVE POINTS ARE EASILY CAUGHT UP!

Sorry-- I decided not to wear my glasses all day today-- my vision is terrible and this is the first time in... 7 years that I go an entire day without wearing them. (Prescriiption is about -4.5, acuity worse than 20/800). SO... computer screen is fuzzy, and I'm missing sentences every once in a while.

All encouragement will stay put, though. XD

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Sunday, I felt groggy all day and kept dozing off. Didn't help that I was reading a fairly boring book. Not off to the greatest start - my goad is probably too ambitious, for sure. Finished all of one book yesterday, plus most of another. So I'm almost 3 books down. Having enough tea to float a ship!
