25.1 - Donna Jo's task: I'm Solidly Behind You
mstan wrote: "Hi Donna JoI'd like to check if [bookcover:Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us] is OK for option B?"
mstan, yes it's okay.
good task Donna Jo - not sure what i'm going to read yet - maybe should dig one of those classics out...lol! I think I have Villette somewhere
OK Donna Jo - I am never sure on the cover tasks so I have a few to run by you for option B - solid cover. Are any or all of these solid cover enough? Thanks

"JennRenee, sorry, the mods and I talked about this before they posted my task. Lettering with pictures on or through it will not work for Option B.

A check with the mods and they have said The Way We Fall WILL be allowed. Sorry I misled you--and everyone else.

no problem thanks!

[bookco..."Sorry, Sheila. I did type a reply to you, but my computer is still behaving wonky (technical term) so the reply is wafting around in the world-wide web somewhere.
Anyway, we are nixing with pictures--just solid backgrounds and lettering, so none of those covers fit.
I do hope you can use them for other tasks. I really enjoyed the Flavia De Lucca.
Donna Jo, I just want to make sure I have this right. You say it has to be solid background except for letters. No pictures.
Can you explain to me why the book that Sheila used
doesn't work?Thanks

Sure, Because of the red bar across the bottom. If it had just said "A Myron Bolitar Novel" on the blue background it would have been okay, but it introduced a new color to the background.
This is a tough one. I couldn't find anything on my tbr list that will work for the plain background if no picture or design is allowed and yet evidently a picture within the lettering is allowed. Is that correct Donna Jo?
Sheila, that is tough. Thank goodness there are other options. Can you find something with one of the other options? Thanks for answering, Donna Jo.
Sure Sassafrass I've got books picked out for 2 of the other options. It's just that I'm ......well...STUBBORN! ;-/
Donna Jo I hope you know I'm not trying to give you a hard time. I'm just trying to figure it out.
Sorry about your computer woes as well. I hate that. My spreadsheet I use to track my books is already giving me fits and the season hasn't even started yet. I don't trust it for keeping track. Half the time it says I can't save changes. errrr
Sheila wrote: "This is a tough one. I couldn't find anything on my tbr list that will work for the plain background if no picture or design is allowed and yet evidently a picture within the lettering is allowed...."9 Dragons WILL work. Whew!

Sheila, don't worry about it. It's sometimes annoying when publishers don't consider OUR needs when they put books out. See, not your fault OR mine that this part of the task is so difficult.
Kathy G. wrote: "For B--- Do these work?
(She has several like this)

Thanks"
Kathy, both those will work.
Donna Jo wrote: "Bea wrote: "Will this work?
"Bea, yes it does."
OK, Sheila. This one is for you. I found it on your TBR list.
I found them, by accident, and I wanted them approved in case someone else was looking for some. Those are super hard to find!
Thanks for thinking of me Bea. Unfortunately that book isn't available at my library. Actually none of the books by that author are. Now that I got one approved I'm good. Kathy G. has two good choices there too unfortunately I have already read both of those. Thanks Donna Jo for the approval of 9 Dragons. Now you can breathe a big sigh of relief that you've got me off your back!
Wondering if any of these off my list will work for option B. I have a back-up if they don't, though.
Sheila wrote: "Thanks for thinking of me Bea. Unfortunately that book isn't available at my library. Actually none of the books by that author are. Now that I got one approved I'm good. Kathy G. has two good ..."Yipes! Yep, that is the determiner for me too...library availability.
I will be reading
. This cover does not do it justice. It is a very shiny day-glo orange on the original book.
Sheila wrote: "Thanks for thinking of me Bea. Unfortunately that book isn't available at my library. Actually none of the books by that author are. Now that I got one approved I'm good. Kathy G. has two good ..."Sheila, like I was so worried!

"Kate, They all look good.
OK now ladies, Did Toxin get approved because that one is on my tbr as well but this is the cover that mine showed.
That is one I have been wanting to read for a while.
What do you say about Toxin Donna Jo? Is it a thumbs up?

Sheila, Bea's Toxin cover works as it is a solid background. Your edition with the hospital room picture, though, doesn't work for this one. (Man, I hate saying no to you all the time.)

No worries Donna Jo, I'll just use her cover when posting the task. Same book.

Of course, all of this is on the honor system, but the rules say:
2. For tasks that require a specific image or color on their cover, the player must read the book edition that has the required element.

I understand the rule Sandy and I think it is a good one.. I've already picked 2 other options for this task. Or I would read the LP version (definitely not the pb version for my old eyes. Here is a link to the LP version that I would be reading
That passes inspection doesn't it Donna Jo?
My problem is when I was adding books to my tbr list I just linked to whatever version of the book came up first since I was adding about 1,000 books. (How do you spell obsession?) I didn't want to take the time to link to the LP or audiobooks which I almost exclusively use. In this case it would have been easy to fit this task if I had had the LP version linked instead of the pb version.

Sheila, that cover is good to go.
And I know what you mean about just using any edition--when I first got on GR I didn't realize you could shift editions, so a lot of my early let's-just-get-all-the-books-I-ever-read posts are only good for the title.

Choose two different options.
A. Books can be very solid items. Read a big book--at least 500 pages. (Remember you can claim a Big Book ticket) State the number of pages when you post
B. Read a book with a solid color cover. The only exception is the lettering for author and title.
C. Read a book with a title/subtitle that contains the word "solid" or one of these synonyms: cubic, dense, cohesive, firm, sound, unbroken, solvent, strong. You may use plurals, possessives and forms of the words created by adding -ly, -ness,or -al (in the case of cubic), but no compound words.
D. The subject matter of books can be pretty solid. Read a classic from Harold Bloom's list of best books
If an individual title is not listed ("selected stories", "complete works", "plays", etc) you may choose any work by that author within that category that meets general challenge rules
Required: Mention page and section heading when posting (for example, if you read The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann, then include the information found on Page 4, Germany.)
E. Read a book by an author whose initials are in the word "SOLIDLY". If an author goes by three or more names and/or initials all the initials must fit. Hypenated names count as one word. The letters can be in any order.
Required: Please state the options when posting.
