Jonathan Hill | 1599 comments Yes, that's the one. It did have an unusual play within a play structure. I'm not sure it did trivialise the Holocaust. There was a moment near the end that showed a breathtaking act of defiance and I think it was perhaps the only time I have cried in the theatre...ever. It was always going to be a tough sell though. "Fancy seeing a show?" "Sure, which one?" "A Holocaust musical." "Hmmm."

Have you ever been to the sites of the camps, Michael? If not, would you consider it?

message 202: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Nope, never been to any of the camps but I'd like to.

I've read accounts from other people who have been and it's interesting how different people find it. Some are very moved and upset, whilst others are more indifferent.

I think it can depend on how much you've read about The Holocause in general, how old you are, etc.

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Okay, it's blog update time!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'm currently reading The Warsaw Anagrams: A Novel

I'm finding it deeply moving, especially as I wandered the streets it mentions not all that long ago.

I look forward to reading your WIP.

message 205: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Hmmm, might have to take a look at that one.

Cheers, Patti.

I read that a while back, Patti. It stayed with me for a long while after.

message 207: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yes, I'm finding that its haunting me when I'm not reading it.

A sign of the best sort of book, I think.

message 208: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Right, another spiffing update about my writing exploits.

Warsaw Story is now at the 36k words mark with plenty more still to come. I'm getting near to the point where the story takes a turn and some extra characters will be introduced/thrusted into the fray.

As ever, there's the lingering paranoia that I'll run out of ideas and end up with nothing more than a short story but that's just me be a daft 'un - there's already far more meat to the story than I imagined there would be when I first started it.

No doubt I've contradicted myself somewhere in that update, but hey! Life is tough as a pantster.

message 209: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'm looking forward to reading it Michael.

message 210: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Thanks, Patti!

Right, blog update time:

message 211: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I don't offer to do this very often, but if you'd like me to beta read it for you, I'd be happy too.

Time permitting, of course. :)

message 212: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments That'd be great, Patti.

I've taken a screenshot of your offer just so you can't back out of it.

message 213: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Lol!

message 214: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I started Underneath this afternoon.

message 215: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Ooooh!

*Anxiously clenches buttocks*

When did you actually download it? I released a second edition a month or so back. I can bosh it over to you if you've still got the old one.

If you go to the very very start of the book and look below the title to see if it says Second Edition. Or look at the bit where I list my other books - if it includes Jake, you've got the most recent one.

message 216: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yep, I've got the second edition.

I'm not very far into it yet but your main character has intrigued me.

And that's exactly. What I'd do with coffee powder too. ;)

message 217: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh meant to say earlier that I've noticed a couple of errant commas.

Would you like me to keep track of any 'oops' I notice?

message 218: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Yup, please do! Commas drive me insane to be honest.

Annoyingly I can't actually remember the coffee powder thing you're referring to...!

message 219: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments you're kidding! it was kicked. from a shopping bag.
don't want to do any spoilers.
i expect I'll read lots of it tomorrow while i nurse my hangover. or I'll just lie on the couch n groan...
stupid football

message 220: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Ah, gotcha! I thought you were talking about something more specific to coffee preferences or something.

message 221: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments i just read through your entire thread. yeah, its more interesting than stupid football. doesn't look like i ever mentioned in here that i read and loved Jake. was ages ago now. Im sure i talked about it in the group at the time. when Im not on my phone I'll have to check if i reviewed it.
so many wonderful books. so little time. :(

message 222: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments My thread is more interesting than the clone thread I started in another group.

I didn't bother watching the football, but Wigan beating Man City is fantastic stuff.

I had no idea that you read Jake! I'm off to the Morning! thread to snitch on you for not reviewing it.

message 223: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments 28% and 14 bookmarks so far! Mostly commas though. There's one bit where the print goes really faint, which was odd.

I also found another sat. Grrrrrrrr.

Hugh is seriously freaking me out. Wonderful. :)

message 224: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments I wonder what Hugh would make of commas.

message 225: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I think I know what he'd do.

Not working today so I should be able to read another good chunk of it.

message 226: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Still reading it. Haven't had much reading time the past couple days.

Mike, are you willing to have a Skype?

Would be quicker and easier to talk through the oopsies than for me to write them out.

message 227: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments My Skype is borked for some reason, hasn't worked for ages. I think my PC is due another formatting soon.

If you like, just send me a list of the first few mistakes and I'll analyse them and correct the rest of them.

If that makes sense.

message 228: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh shame.

I think I can cut and paste the notes I've taken from manage my kindle somehow. I recall Joo saying something about doing that.

But I'm not explaining my thoughts in my notes. Just slamming an 'a' at the spot.

Might be enough though and you can always ask me about anything that's unclear.

I'll look into it once I finish the book. :)

Oh, should say I'm still really enjoying it, too!

message 229: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Finished it just this minute.

Mike, it's as good as anything I've read by Ruth Rendell. And that's saying a lot as I LOVE Ruth Rendell.

I applaud you, sir.

I'll sort out a review and how to send you the revisions. It really deserves the time it'll take to clean it up.

Thanks so much for the hours of great reading!

message 230: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Thank you, dearest Patti. Your kind words have made this boring Friday all the more bearable.

You're welcome to share my meat and mead whenever you want, as they say in Game of Thrones.

message 231: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Cool! BBQ round your's then.

I'll wear my bear skin.

Nope

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Snigger, snigger!

message 236: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Not me!

message 237: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Wee update:

I've decided to join the ranks of the woodcutter authors, and have signed up to CreateSpace!

The process of setting it up was easier than I expected but I've got to wait until the 'proof' copies arrive before being able to actually unleash it on the world.

It's my first book, Shades of Grey, that is getting the treatment first but delivery isn't expected until Thursday or so. Which is very annoying because I want it NAOW. I'll probably do some giveaways and stuff when it's all ready.

Warsaw Story, my current WIP, is coming along nicely still. It's a squeak under 50k words so far and a few more character/plot threads have sprung up in my head as well. I'm loathe to predict how long the finished article will be - at one point I thought I was going to struggle to make it this far!

message 238: by Joo (new)

Joo (jooo) | 1351 comments Patti, assuming you highlighted all those pesky typos, you can either plug your kindle into your computer and go to the clippings file, or you can go to https://kindle.amazon.com/your_highli...
I find when I go to highlights and cut and paste, it's a horrid format, so I paste it into wordpad then copy and paste out of there.

message 239: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Thanks Joo.

I know you've told me this several times in the past. My brain is sieve-like. :(

How did you get on with fixing the typos Mike? You've not said.

You'll want Shades to be completely clean before you DTB it, I'm sure.

Has anyone gone through it for you? I'd be happy to but it may be a while. It's end of term here so really busy.

message 240: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments I haven't got round to fixing the ones in Underneath yet, but your list helped me see where I'd used too many commas in Shades of Grey.

message 241: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh good. :)

Let me see if I've already got Shades...

message 242: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Nope.

Not cheap, is it? ;)

message 243: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments I can bosh you the mobi file over if you want.

message 244: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments You're a sweetie. :)

No promises that I'll get it proofread before you want to do the order though.

message 245: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Nah, that's okay. I've emailed it to you.

message 246: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Thanks, got it.

Doesn't want to be sent to my kindle for some reason but it opens in the kindle app on my iPad.

Suppose I'll have to read it that way. Grrr

message 247: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments That's weird. You tried doing it with the USB cable?

message 248: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Naw.

I always just email the files. Don't think I've ever plugged in this kindle.

It's fine on the kindle app. Means ill be able to read it while I'm at work.

Only during breaks, of course. ;)

message 249: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments I've just updated Underneath.

As much as I want to thank you Patti, it's been a mind-numbingly tedious few hours.

But I'm dedicated to my craft, yeah?

Yeah?

*slits wrists*

message 250: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Lol!

Good boy. Have a cookie.

I'm sure you feel an enormous sense of accomplishment.
