The "I-Must-Not-Buy-Any-More-Books" Thread

If you don't feel sorry, then penance will not help you. You have to truly be sorry for it to count! (vermicious knid) Ha I fit it in!!!!
Naughty, naught Emu! You should send your friend this way if they're gonna be treating ;)Becky, I haven't bought anything in 2 weeks...if that counts for anything.
I feel lonely being the only one to not buy any books. *sigh*
...being virtuous sucks.

Ha ha! So you are warning us you may be a bad girl in other areas? Mentioning the sideburn sporting fellow again, I'm betting he appreciates that. *wink*
Unfortunately, I think we're dragging you down more so than you are inspiring us.Hey, who could expect you to? There's only one of you and......some huge amount of us.
Jackie, sorry I missed your post before, but I'll take 2 weeks! Maybe I should start handing out tokens, like AA does?
Jackie, you get a 2-week token! And I get a 1-month token!
There. Now we can feel like we've accomplished something.
What will they have on them? BA? That will look as if you are collecting degrees. Books Anonymous
Book Abstinence (sp?)
Yes... We can even use Abba's "S.O.S." as our theme song. So when you're near me, darling can't you hear me?
S. o. s.
The love you gave me, nothing else can save me

When you're gone
How can I even try to go on?
When you're gone
Though I try how can I carry on?
;)
Let me guess Becky-You saw Mama Mia! and want the DVD? That was the best movie to see with my daughter. We listened to the CD (my vintage ABBA-not the soundtrack) for weeks afterwards. That is the perfect themesong for your group!
I love the token idea. I tried going this year w/o buying I made it 3 weeks and 1 day! I have a problem!

So you actually did find interesting books in the library!

How well it goes to think it is all about books that song!!!

Go see it Becky, it is great and makes you really laugh...although that might have been partly because we were in the movie theater watching it and when I gave the small bottle of water to my boyfriend after I drank (because he wanted it too but by that time I closed it already), he thought it was open and put it to his mouth when jsut before doing that he notices very surprised that it was closed...well it doesn't sound funny telling it but that moment I wa almost on my knees laughing and crying because of it!
Becky, you made me put on Abba music and for sure in a little bit I will have Mamma Mia in my head!!!!

Oh, you don't know what you're missing. Such a feel good, fun thing. (Only "fly" is Pierce Brosnan's voice... kinda hard watching James Bond sing LOL!)
Jeane: Hahaha hayes... non funziona cosi!!!!!:-)

Sure it does! more went out than came in... perfect! and yes I did find good things in the library. It's still impossible to get to becasue of location and opening times, but I've been managing. I couldn't find a place to park my scooter the other day and raced in and out, grabbing the first thing I could find, fearing the cops would take the scooter away, which they have started doing when they find one "creatively parked". In the past it was just tickets, bad enough at 70 euros a pop.

I have devised a solution to the "must not buy any more books" reality and the psychological "but I NEEEEED it."My TBR pile has about 160 books in it, not to mention library hold list. I know that if I say that I won't buy any books until I've read a certain number of them, I won't buy any books for a few months and then I'll go crazy one day and come home with 30 in one day. So here's the plan:
I get to reward myself for reading a certain number of books:
For every 4 books I read out of my TBR pile, I can buy one.
For every 8 books I read from the library, I can buy one.
For every 12 books I re-read, I can buy one.
Hopefully this new system will help me to slow the buying. With as fast as I read there still may be problems, but I can always increase the numbers in the rules if necessary.
When I'm really trying to be good. It's easier to do when I go in and say I'm going to buy a specific book. Then I go get that book. Go straight to the register and leave. The browsing factor gets me in trouble. That is what lead to me owning over 150 books that I haven't read yet.Another method I think I'm going to use is to only go shopping when I can buy several books.
*bows* Thank you, thank you! I'd just like to thank all the people who helped me get where I am today... First, there was my mom and dad, then my kindergarten teacher, my 1st grade teacher, my...
Just kidding!
LOL...congrats Becky and thanks for the 2 week tokens. My b-day is coming up next month, so I think I will save them till then. :-)
Thanks Jackie! I hope that February goes as well as January did. I have a feeling that future months aren't going to be as high-volume though, since I have some lengthy books on my shelf: Bleak House, The Woman In White, Emma, The Fountainhead, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell... The list goes on!
*sigh*
I hope you will like Jonathan Strange and NR Norrel. I am enjoying it a lot at the moment but many people didn't.
So I've heard, Jeane! Quite a few of my friends struggled with it and/or gave it up, so now I am nervous! Fiona, I've wanted to read Bleak House for a long time, and have had the book for about 6 months but still haven't read it! I think maybe that will be my March classic... (February might be too short to fit it in and finish the Official Challenge too.)
On the other hand, I watched the BBC production of Jane Austen's "Persuasion" last night, and it was wonderful!
(Don't read this part if you haven't read the book!)
This morning, as I woke up it struck me that Anne's sisters reminded me of Cinderella's step-sisters. Bossy, manipulative, conniving, selfish, and they treat her like she's not even a person. I wonder if Jane wrote them with the fairy-tale in mind...?
Yep. Thats the one... I read the book in December, so it's not fresh in my mind, but it seemed that Wentworth was more forward with Anne than he was in the book. In the book he was very formal with her, thisclose to standoffish, but in the movie he was more open with her. But, it was very good and I really enjoyed it!
(I want to see Rome BADLY! Now even more. Thanks Kandice. Is it out on DVD?)
Becky, go and seeeeeee it and imagine walking in and on all that history. Really it si such a great feeling. And then jsut explore the rest of that gorgeous, wonderful, not paradise but feeling like paradise with wonderful food, great mountains, lovely language.... uhm...yeah jsut go and visit it I wanted to say.
Jeane, are you talking about Rome, as in like the real city?I'd LOVE to go to Rome! One day I will, when I can afford it. Unfortunately, I'm poor right now! :(
oh yes, the real city...the one where you see the colloseum between to buildings, for the first time and your feet don't move anymore. The one where you are walking and see all those crazy drivers and realize there is so much known and unknown history under your feet...yep that city. Did you know that so many people can't have like modern things like tubes and installations put in their houses because if they have to change things in the ground there is like a 99.9% chance that they will find some historic thing under the house and they can't continue the works then. Must be frustrating but...jsut the thought would make me happy! One woman had changes done in her shop once when they found a gorgeous fresco and really old pillars hidden behind a new wall. Luckily she changed her shop around it and it looks wonderful with that in it.becky, I dreamed for more than twenty years and finally it came real! So keep dreaming.
I want to go to Rome as well! Absolutely #1 on my list of placs to go. (thanks to McCullough;)Yes, Becky, it's on DVD. I wanted to buy to buy it, but because it's HBO, it was $99.99 a season. At only 13 episodes each... forget it! I had such, such, such a crush on one of the guys. I'll have to look up his name. So handsome!
Yeah, I added them to my Netflix. Seasons 1 & 2. I'll wait until I've gotten them all before sitting down to watch them, it'll be like a marathon!
Be ready for intensity! From everything I have read, it's pretty accurate too! I have a poster of Attia's face, with what looks like graffiti in red, that says "Attia is a tramp". I dontl have it hanging or anythng, but my friend got it for me, and if I was a teenager, I sure would. Let me know if you like them.
Well let me know when you're coming, y'all, so I can find a place where we can all meet and talk!! Wouldn't that be great?
Fiona said: I would like to go back to the place in Fishbourne...an old Roman villa and you could still see the mosaic floor and also the methods they used to heat the floor.
I think I saw a documentary on satellite about the restoration of that site... an odious woman in charge and everyone quit the job at the end, but the site was incredibly beautiful.
