melissa, I lived in England for three years too but was never so cold like now for me. brrrrrrr
Yes, I live in Dublin but only since the 19th of November. So I am not updated enough yet to give advice. But then again, the centre of Dublin isn't that big and you can walk around and around and jsut see a lot. I wouldn't buy too many books about it because I don't think it is big enough for that. Just maybe a map and a simple guide book with like the most interesting things to do. St Patrick's church and the other big one are very beautiful. You can also do a tour on the bus so you see the main things. I think I want to do that one, so I see a bit what interesting things there are and so I know what I really want to visit.
You can also check a bit what is interesting on the internet. I like two of them: http://www.visitdublin.com/
http://www.dublin.ie/visitors.htm
Hope it helps a bit. Don't forget to go in a typical Irish pub! ;-)

Lynlee, it is a start! Now try for 15 days at least. Maybe that is an idea for all of you who are trying to be strong. tell yourself days you can't buy any books and make them longer every time....
Fiona, wasn't that a positive contribution from a not participating person??!!!!
Thanks for those sites, Jeane. I just can't decide if I'll make it! I really want to go, but...MONEY is such a pain! Why can't we all be rich and just travel when we want and buy all the books we want and never work so we can read instead?HMMM????
I just found myself browsing my Amazon wish list, contemplating buying myself a few books. This is going to be much tougher than I had anticipated.
Jill, in my opinion Amazon is the enemy. It's just way too easy to see a thread about a book and with a few clicks ooops, you now have another book.
I spent Christmas money on more bookshelves, bigger, deeper, wider shelves that make my pile seem diminished, does that mean I can buy more to make the shelves look full again? That kinda was my plan even though I told my husband it was to clean up the old bulging bookshelf. I'm trying to save money for a real vacation this year but I NEED so many more books....oh temptation .
Fiona! Are you going to let Jeane influence you and make you fail at your mission?? (Sorry Jeane, I need a scapegoat here!)No, you're not! You will SUCCEED at your mission because you have will-power and fortitude and over 200 unread books that are weeping from negligence.
*shakes head*
Well I caved. @@ I found myself standing in the library second hand book store. Lord John and the Private Matter jumped into my hands. While waiting for the authors seventh in the Outlander trilogy to be published (2010??) I will have plenty of time to read her three Lord John books. Oh I also found a copy of Outlander that I bought, and I did that only because about nine months ago I lent my copy out to a girl at the bank. I told her to "take her time" getting it back to me - uh... but I've still not gotten it back. So, now I don't have to stress about something missing from my library, and she can pass it along as well if she wishes.I spent a whopping 3.00
I'm having trouble because I keep getting emails about books on my wishlist being posted at bookmooch! I've waited awhile for some of these, so it's tempting to grab them.I'm holding out though. I have so many books to read that I'm sure these others will get posted again by the time I finish the 150 books I already own...

becky, I started actually being of positive influence!:-) But maybe Fiona needs some pressure and no kind words to keep her promise!
Hi my name is Monica and I am a book-a-holic. I have so many books... I ran out of book shelf room a long time ago. I went through my DVD's and am now putting books on my DVD stand, under my bed (for easy reach of course), stacking them on my dresser... Its bad news. Some of my shelves are even sagging in the middle because I am trying to convince myself that I still have plenty of room LOL
Hmm... Yes, tough love I think may be called for in this instance! Military school? What do you think?
Jana wrote: "I'm definitely an addict. I love the smell and feel of a brand new book!"Oh me too!! My boyfriend got me a few books for Christmas and I think I was just sitting there smelling them for like... 5 minutes before he goes, 'are you ok?' haha
I have to STOP buying books and read the ones I have! I read enough where buying books is not a bad thing but I just own SO MANY of them, I don't know what to do with them!
Fiona, you inspired me to re-organize my bookcases into "read" and "to read" shelves. As I suspected, the "to read" seriously outnumbered the "read." *sigh* I now have no excuse not to stick to my book buying diet!
Fiona, I'm so glad to see someone else comment about the smell of books. I love "new book" smell. My husband thinks I'm crazy because he always catches me smelling my books as I read them, but it's such a happy smell! I went into B&N this weekend with a $50 giftcard in my purse and didn't buy a single book. Still on the wagon...for now.
I love the smell of books too. Is it just me, or do highly anticipated books smell better than others?
I lasted about nine days. My boyfriend knows I'm only supposed to buy one book a month. I bought two at Target yesterday and said they were January and February. I did not tell him about the three I ordered online that he will never know about...
If I can make it another 353 days buying only 7 books it will be a miracle. I'm keeping track so I know how far over the limit I go...I really hope it won't be more than 30 or I'll really feel like a failure.
I have stuck with mine. I'm very proud of myself. This week will be a challenge though- I have the week off and normally I go thrift-store and used book-store browsing on my off days. I'll just stay home and clean. A lot. Fiona you just reminded me that I am waiting on "The Amulet of Samarkand" from BookMooch. I ordered it in November but the person offering it said that she wasn't sure when she'd be able to send it. So whenever that one comes, I'm done. (It is already included on my list though!)
Good for you Fiona! I broke the ban on Saturday, thanks to Borders. I went in looking for one book and came out with another. I really have to stop visiting them.I think I'm gonna alternate between reading one library book and one of mine. So far I've read one of mine and I'm currently reading one from the library. I think this will help me not feel so deprived.
This is a funny thread! Well, maybe not for those that are 'addicted'.I visit the library in my time of NEED...and never one book at a time...what if that one was the 'wrong' choice for my mood and I have nothing else to turn to?! *Gasp!* The local Community Thrift Store has paperbacks for only 50c/hardcover is $1...fortunately, I'm only in that area of town once every 2 weeks. These are my 'fallback' books...when the 'liberry' ones are on empty or they're kept in the car for those 'stuck' moments.
A woman, who works at an independant bookstore in town, came into my place of employment recently....I asked what their employee-discount is...40% off!!!!
Did you just get a 'shiver' on hearing that? I did.
If I had the books staring back at me I would feel guilty too, but my books are primarly hidden in the cabinet. It's not too bad, however, they are starting to overflow onto the nightstand and it's starting to become a problem. I need to get rid of the ones I've already read and don't care about, but I haven't found the time for a proper goodbye.
I keep books if I feel that I will read them again. If not, I give them away, donate them or list them on PBS or BookMooch.
Yeah, I know what you mean. I know whether or not I will read a book again simply by how I felt about it the first time. If I could barely get through it, it goes.
If I finished it, set it on the shelf and never thought of it again, it goes.
If I finished it and thought of it again, but only that it should go on the "Top 10 Books To Avoid" thread, it goes.
If it was OK, but I think that maybe I will appreciate it more later, it stays.
If I loved it and want to keep it around for further enjoyment, it stays.
My boyfriend smokes, so I try to keep my book buying budget in line with what he spends on cigarettes. My book addiction is a vice, but it's better for me than his is!
I think I'm going to have a problem with this book ban. All of my books were crammed onto one shelf, so I bought a set of three more shelves (should've just bought one, but it was more economical to buy the set). But I suppose I way overestimated the space I needed, because even after I moved all of my overflowing books, I now have 2 completely empty shelves. Empty bookshelves just beg for more books to fill them, don't you think?
If you riffle through the pages, will they still be considered "virgin" books? Personally, as much as I love new books, I really like the yellowy pages in old books. I like the smell too. Like water. Sort of.
Les wrote "You can read after you're dead."I certainly hope so, because it's very discouraging to look at my overflowing shelves and boxes and compare it to my age and wonder how I'm going to read it all before dying ... and still buy more books!
WhooohOOOOOOOO!!! Congratulations, you're making progress!! I started reading one of my own books last night.
Les, really, if you want to tempt the girl you'll have to offer the money to pay for the books too! That's no temptation! Off with you!
I don't want my last dying thought to be 'aw crap I never got around to reading The Pillars of the Earth' I want to die peacefully without worryin..."
fiona I havent even gotten myself a copy.. oh boy! the gifchek I got for christmas is making me ichy
OK, I bought another book, but hear me out...I bought a copy of Catch-22 because my old copy was falling apart. It doesn't count as breaking the code if it's just replacing books, does it?
Fiona wrote: "I managed to get rid of a few books last week - The Wind-up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami. I don't know really want makes a book a keeper and one a thrower. I think there are just a part of me ones i have them. And maybe also the fact that since I am a kid I adore books. i always used to dream about the day I would have money to buy me books. In the meantime I adored going to the library but still...one day I would buy books. Since the day I started earning money....a dream came real...... Maybe I just can't give up on them now after all the dreaming. I am just in love with having my books:-))))

Fiona wrote: "I walked into the library (which is having a book sale commencing from 16th Feb oh my!) and then the bookshop and came out with: 0 Books.Oh yes. I didn't even FEEL like acquiring a book. "
She did it, she did it!!!!! celebration time!!!!
I remember I ones gave away a book I had twice and it was still in plastic and everything....but it was hard. I think there are just a part of me ones i have them. When I moved and had to 'keep or toss' certain books, I discovered that I had three copies of Lord of the Flies! I absolutely HATED that book! Think that they were accumulated for 'required' reading. I tried to give them away, only to find out that everyone else I knew hated them, as well! HA!
So, now they are either in a landfill OR look for them at your local "Library Book Sale"!

Groan ... my youngest daughter wants to know why I keep buying more books when I have yet to read the ones I now own? Good question! I, like others in this "thread", need to stop borrowing and begin taking books off my own book shelves ... but then why can't they just stop publishing new books, LOL!!!
