Becky, can someone ELSE buy you a book? Would that be cheating? You could always bat your eyes at Mr. Sideburn;)

LOL... I said that I wouldn't acquire any new books... but it's been 37 days and I think that's 36 & 1/2 days too long to go without buying new books! ACK! Don't listen to me, that was the little demon on my shoulder. He's bad.
...I wanna go to Barnes and Noble.
I KNOW!!! ...but, I don't think that B&N is a "No Kill" Book Shelter. I can't have all those poor innocent book deaths on my conscience!
No. You're right. They aren't my friend. They are trying to lure me in with cute fluffy little books, but they have sharp teeth and will devour my budget. *sigh*
I think I have under 50 to-be-read books, but here is my pledge (Don't tell my husband!):I promise to abstain from purchasing new books until my to-be-read pile is looking more respectable. I must read the books I already own!
I'm adding this also:
I promise that if there is a book that I just have to read, I will check it out from the library or obtain it through the Interlibrary Loan system.
There. That wasn't too painful. If I can wait to rent movies until they're out on DVD (I love Redbox), I can wait until a new book is available at the library.

sara, good luck. Quiting any drugs doesn't give you symptoms immediately!
Fiona, Fiona, Fiona... How is it that you can tell me not to acquire books in a moment of weakness and then the very next day get one yourself? Tsk Tsk!
Oh so that was the whole paln of starting this thread!!!!! So that others would be strong and good and be your excuse when you are becoming too weak..again? bad bad bird!!!
Okay, I am NOT GOING TO BUY ANYMORE BOOKS. I solemnly swear.
Now Becky, you don't have to suffer alone!
:D Okay, now, I just need to take the Chapters giftcards OUT of my wallet and then I'll be safe!
Any other ideas?
Umm... you could pile all of your unread books in front of the door so that you have to read them before you can leave the house. ...ok, so that might not be practical, like, say in case of a fire... What about moving them NEXT to the door so that you have to see them before you leave and will feel guilty if you bring back more..?
Well, I'd probably have 100 if I counted the gift books. Okay, I think 5 is a good number, because 10 would overwhelm me.
Well that's one book better. DO. NOT. BUY. BECKY.
Look at all those pretty covers, you could read what's inside them!
Yes... Ooh, now that I'm in double digits again I feel like I'm making some progress, even though it was sort of cheating to find a book that I've already read...

But don't worry everybody, at least you can do something about the unread ones! I have more than 100 unread books in belgium and I am in Ireland...having seven unread books in one month plus the ones in belgium...
So I just went through and counted the books that I can't read until I've gotten the rest of the series that goes along with them, and there are 14. So that's my goal: Once I get down to these 14 books, I can then begin getting new books again!
I suppose that's fair, Fiona! I think I am going to round up all of the books that I don't want anymore and donate them. And then I'm going to start going to the library more often. I don't go to the library often enough. I don't like reading hardcovers though, so I think that's why I prefer to get my own books.
But, that's for later. I have to get through my own list first!
Yeah... I will just have to deal with it. I can't keep spending all this money on books that I've never read. I read them once and don't really care for them and then they just sit on my shelf until they disintegrate! I'd list them on paperbackswap.com but then I'd have to pay to ship them... but I do get credits for other books, so it's not SO bad. Maybe I'll donate 1/2 and list the other 1/2 on PBS.
Fi, I'm going to do the same thing as you can not get any library books until I read 10 that I own.Oh, and I took those Chapters giftcards out of wallet! I passed by a Chapters this afternoon and I couldn't even buy anything! I'm pleased.
I have to say, maybe it is just me looking for an excuse, but I think if you have a giftcard to a bookstore, not only is it okay to use it, nay, it is REQUIRED to use it! You wouldn't want to hurt the feelings of the poor considerate friend/family member who got it, now would you?p.s. Just buying a giftcard yourself and then saying "Whoops, guess I have to go use this," doesn't count!

hahaha...i love the title....i keep telling myself i must not buy anymore books because I still have so many books lying unread on my bookshelf. Then i will go to the bookstore and before I know it, I am queuing up to pay for a book!

Great Emma!!!!! You will ahve your giftcard when you have a moment that you are allowed to spoil yourself!!!!

(G)Emma wrote: "I promise. I'll buy that this week for sure."What? I thought you were keeping me company!!!
Fiona wrote: "Have you got I Capture the Castle? You can have leave to get that. But don't take anything else!"Bad bird!
Give us a week, through subtlety and subterfuge on par with Emperor Palpatine, Fiona and I will have you all spending a grand on books every month. Come to the dark siiiiiiiiide... (good cop, bad cop is fun!)
I must stay strong for Becky.Stay strong for Becky.
No books.
Pretty books at home. Pretty covers.
No buy. No buy Emma the Emu.
o.0 There's a thread for this?! That's so weird! I was just thinking about how I'm probably the only teenager whose parents actually tell them that they CAN'T buy anymore books (unless it's with my own money...), because I'm making them go "broke", for lack of a better word.Ha ha. I have about 150 books in my room, about ten of which I haven't read yet. And a library book that was due on November 2nd that I only checked out because I've never really borrowed a book from the library before--I didn't even want to read it. I have lots of reading to do before I go out and buy new books (I have this quirk about borrowing books...). But, knowing me, it'll take me no time to read ten books. That's a piece of cake. My parents will, no doubt, go in debt because of my obsessive book-buying. :]
Oh, and: "I promise to abstain from purchasing new books until my to-be-read pile is looking more respectable and I must read the books I already own!"
:) Thanks. Ha ha. I could spend a grand on books in no time. Just drop me off at a bookstore and give me about two hours.
