no to free books?????? So if today someone gives you a free book like for isntance in the supermarket...you will say no????

Fiona wrote: "Monte Cristo is fantastic, apart from that boring 100 pages in Rome, but get past that and it's quick sailing."there are 100pages about Rome in it? Okay, will read it sooner than I wanted then!

Great angela! Keep going!!!!!

haha, but you all need this to go on! So you all keep not buying books and read those you have already. as all my books are att he other side of the Channel, I have to find them.....and I had to reward myself for the job!But not buying any for the moment. So keep going all!
There aren't any bookshops there:-( It is a new zone they're having there. Mainly new companies and new flats but nothing else yet, I think.Nono for the moment I am not buying any. So for at least another week and if i keep my promise till I read the ones I bought.
Jeane, Pearl Earring was good! It was simply written, but very descriptive and beautiful. I would have actually liked a bit more info about Delft during the time that the book took place (1664-1666 mainly), but the story was very interesting.
I'd seen and appreciated Vermeer's work before, but this book gave me a different kind of insight into the art and the artist and I found myself looking up the different paintings he was painting while I read.
One thing I didn't really like, and this is probably only my opinion, was that Griet (the main character) never referred to Vermeer by his name. She did refer to him at times as "master" and "sir" which I don't mind, but only when speaking directly to him or of him to others. When she was narrating for the reader, she called him "he" or "him". I felt that this almost gave him a sort of divinity that he didn't exactly deserve, regardless of how nice a man he may be.
I have issues too!! My husband just noticed my tbr pile is spilling all over the floor on my side of the bed! Help...but I have to buy the rest of all the series I'm reading...yikes!
Thanks Becky. I remember that in the movie Vermeer had also some sort of divinity over him, at least for me he had.maggie, but isn't it your side of the bed?!!!
Fiona, "Good, but nothing to write home about" was exactly the phrase that I thought when I finished reading it. I liked it, but it didn't really give me that "WOW!" feeling that really great books can.
Damn, I keep thinking I'm going to the bookstore and then I end up being too busy to go.Well, this might be a blessing in disguise.
I LOVE THIS THREAD!!! I have not bought a book in a few months, but if my friend gives me books...what can I say? No? I am proud of myself. I only have 4 library books here at the house at this moment. I do have 8 on order...But that means I won't be buying them. I have actually been selling some books on ebay. (sorry Lori...) I have made around $40.00 on books that a friend gave me that she did not want back. My tbr pile is now ataround 54 boks that I WILL be reading this year. I promise!!!
If you borrow the first book from the library and them accidentally get addicted, you wont be able to help it when you have to buy the rest of the rest of the books! (I might possibly be a bad influence?)
this weekend was sorting out bookshels day... my books were starting to spill of the shelfs. I maneged to trow out some old college files and got one extra shelf to put my books. they rae confortable once more
Linda La Plante is quite a good writer - she wrote the tv series' Widows and also Prime Suspect. Her real name is Linda Titchmarsh!
Be strong. You can do it. Although I shouldn't be talking... I got both of the books I ordered as my last-minute, pre-ban splurge today-- Neverwhere and Water for Elephants-- and acted like it was Christmas again while opening the packages!
...Only 360 days to go.

There you go! I am not saying no and especially not if it is the latest Patricia Cornwell! I must have touched it already near to ten times before even getting it. Now that I get it as a gift I am jumping of joy!
Fiona wrote: "*wobble*But but but..."
noooooo Fiona, not allowed. Think about sequels before you start reading the first one!
Fiona wrote: "Pre-ban splurge? How many of those do you plan to have eh?"I had one!! Neverwhere was ordered through PBS before I even decided to ban book-buying, and then I ordered Water For Elephants 3 days before Jan 1... I won't be your accomplice! ;)
And... Just so you know... Library books are gateway books.
Next you'll be dabbling in freebies, and then you'll be saying, "oh, but its only ONE book, and I can quit any time I want!" and then you'll be at the used bookstore, then you'll be buying books without restraint.
I'm only trying to HELP you, Fiona... It's for your own good.
Of course, but you don't need MY forgiveness! I just don't want you to have to add another room on your house to store your books... Unless you WANT to.
But not because you NEED to!
I must confess...I broke my ban, too. :( Only six days into the new year! B&N was having a "buy two get one free" special on some books, two of which were on my "to-get" list. I wasn't going to get them...I really wasn't! But my corrupting mother said, "here, use what's left on my B&N gift card to buy them, and just get the free one for me." I have no willpower, so I did. Technically I didn't pay for them, but I acquired them nonetheless. So I'm hanging my head in shame as well. No more!!
My "pre-ban splurge" (is five books splurging? What if two are on a gift card?) was not very effective as I've already read three of them, but at least that finished up a series. I should have bought twelve instead.But...I'm continuing to use PBS and the library because I only have about 25 physical TBR books. I just need to stop spending $150+ every month on books.
There you go Fiona... Physical representation of your commitment to whittle down the mountain. Good! *nod*I should do the same, but I'm lazy and very finicky about my book organization methods. Not that I should be, I barely have room to shelve them appropriately, so they are all stacked and... and... It's terrible.
OK...I broke down and bought one book. But it's not my fault! I have a new job at a university and the food court is right next to a book store! Every time I pass by I see The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns, Death from the Skies!, and about fifteen other books on my to-read list just sitting there in the window. What's a girl supposed to do?
And to top it all off, my job offers the occasional free book! *wibble* So I've gotten two new books. But one of 'em was free.
At least it's a student bookstore so the books are all unnaturally expensive. That'll help. Not much, but it will.
OK i must confess I was bad on monday...I've ordered the 5fth volume of the sandman library. I was having a bad day. But well i am colecting those books and the 5fth is hard to find. and its a ghraphic novel - faster to read...
Fiona wrote: "It's blasphemy to have 271 unread books in your shelf!Tomorrow I'm going to sort out my shelf - and put all my read ones at the bottom and unread ones at the top."
Okay Fiona, if you are 500% sure you are only going to take the second of the sequel, you can take it..but only read it after ou read five of your own!!!
I too have a problem. I just resorted my bookshelf last week. The only thing is that I did not get rid of the books I already read but have them on a "special" shelf.
Hi, guys! I want to play.I have a pretty big problem because not only do I love physical books, but I'm getting a large e-book addiction as well. My computer desktop is unbelievably cluttered with files. Some aren't even unrared yet!
Tomorrow, I'll count my books. I already had a deal going in my head that I couldn't purchase any new books until I finished all of my NEW TBR books. Which is totally weak, lol. Because my used, library, and e-book collection can still grow unchecked. But no more!
"I promise to abstain from purchasing new books until my to-be-read pile is looking more respectable and I must read the books I already own!"
This means: no new books. No used books. And no e-books. If I find an e-book I've been wanting, instead of d/l it and saving it in a folder, I will simply bookmark the link for a later date.
The ooooonly exception I will make is travelbooks. I'll be going to Dublin and Prague soon, and I need guidebooks! But I will not buy them until tickets to my destinations are BOUGHT (there's a chance both trips might be shelved thanks to the current economy), so I need to wait before getting to guidebooks.
Good luck Melissa! I thought that it would be hard to abstain from acquiring new books, but I've made it a week already and haven't caved yet. *pat on the back*
I just have to stay away from the places I normally buy books from, mainly the thrift store. I can't go there and leave without several books. It's a challenge for me, because their inventory is always changing depending on donations, so I never want to leave a book because I'm afraid that it will be gone when I get back.
I just have to stay away. Stay AWAY! *sniffle*
I keep getting the damn Border's coupons. It's so irrestible. I can get a free 12 oz beverage or a baked good, but this means I have to go by the books section. *sigh* Good thing is that I already read one of my books and once I finish the library book I'm currently reading I will read another one of mine.
I was going to try to not buy any other books, but I got gift cards from two bookstores here in town, so I have money to spend on books again. Yay!!!!!!!!!!

Wow Melissa, good luck!!!! Hope you aren't coming to Dublin in the next weeks...it si freezing cold here!!!
Operandi wrote: "I was going to try to not buy any other books, but I got gift cards from two bookstores here in town, so I have money to spend on books again. Yay!!!!!!!!!!"operandi, you should wait till you read some books you have already!!!!!!! Com'on try!!!!
Fiona wrote: "I did not buy any books this week. Horrah! I really, really want to though. :("Go girl, go!!!!! I don't mean go buying, noooooo. go keep going in opposite directions form any place with books!
Jeane - I live in England, so I'm dealing with pretty similar weather in my everyday life!If I can make the trip to Dublin happen, it'll be a 3 day trip in the next...two weeks or so.
But wait! Do you live in Dublin?! Perhaps you could give me some ideas as to what to do. Then I don't have to buy any guidebooks, lol. It'd be easier to stick to not buying any books at all. No pressure though. If you think of any ideas, great. If not, I'll definitely find stuff to do through other resources.
As for my physical TBR pile, it's only 40 books! Of course, I have boxes of books in storage back in the States. We won't count those because I can't access them yet!
My e-book TBR pile is a wee bit more ridiculous. 96 books.
Plenty to choose from. No excuse for buying anything new! Or acquiring in any manner!
I fell off the wagon today.....I made it through only 8 days. Stopped at a small charity shop today and found 5 books I HAD to have.Tomorrow's a new day....
"I promise to abstain from purchasing new books until my to-be-read pile is looking more respectable and I must read the books I already own!"
My TBR pile is not that bad. I only have about 75 unread books. No, see what my problem is that checking out books from the library prevents me from reading the books that I do own. Everytime I go return one, I'll think "Maybe just a little looksie", and then I come out with like five books. But I've stopped browsing the shelves. The thing is that everytime someone on GR is reading a book that sounds even remotely interesting, I check if my library has it. If it does, then it only goes on my lists. If all the copies are checked out then I place them on hold thinking that they won't be available for a couple of months (this seriously happened to me with "7th Heaven" by James Patterson and "Change of Heart" by Jodi Picoult), but then they end up coming in after a two or three day wait. Of course, I can't start to read the books I own until I finish the books I borrow. So, it tends to be an endless cycle.
My New Year's resolution is not to stop buying books (I don't spend that much money, I hit second hand shops, ebay, and paperbackswap.com), but to stop checking them out from the library and stop putting them on hold (that's what really gets me into trouble). At least, until I actually read some of the books I've bought. I have seven on hold now, so after those come in, no more. Seriously. I mean it.
