A Discovery of Witches

Who would you like to see play Matthew in the movie, if one were made?
@Kate-True that Sasha has more the eyes of Matthew, but I still like Richard Armitage overall. Diane Kruger would work, I forgot about her. She is a terrific actress as well as having the looks of Diana. With Vampires, I tend to not think about age as they may have been "made" at a younger age than their "children". I just don't see Sasha as Matthew and was throwing him out there because I like him. We need a debonair European Philippe, any suggestions?

I also think Swoosie Kurtz would be great as Aunt Sarah, and although she is usually a comedic actress, I pictured Joanna Garcia-Swisher as Miriam. What do you think? (btw - LOVE Washington and the San Juans! I am in San Diego.)
I can only see Clive Owen in the part of Matthew. I'm at a loss for Diane, though. I haven't even thought of any of the other characters yet, but it'll be fun to start!I even read Matthew's lines in my head as Clive Owen.
Yep have to agree, Richard Armitage would be ideal as Matthew. As soon as I read Matthew's description in the book Richard popped into my head. 2nd choice Michael Fassbender.Edit - Actually Bendict Cumberbatch would be a good 2nd choice too - would need to bulk up a bit which can be done
Em wrote: "Yep have to agree, Richard Armitage would be ideal as Matthew. He popped into my head as well, and so far no one else's suggestions have changed my mind.

@Kate- Ooh, I like the idea of Rufus Sewell...hadn't thought of him. I love Sean Bean, but he doesn't seem as mysterious to me as Sewell does for that role. Awesome choice! I even can hear his voice when he speaks to Diana..Rufus' voice is quite unique and hypnotic.

Same here Cindy cannot think of anyone else who would suit the role.
Anne wrote: "It has to be Michael Fassbender. That's all I could think while I was reading the book. He'd be perfect."I was literally about to say the same thing! I think he is the perfect man and so naturally perfect to play Matthew
Robin wrote: "Richard Armitage! Richard Armitage is the only actor who could be Matthew."I agree with Richard Armitage - tall, dark, brooding with intelligence and charisma (when he chooses to use it). He is my first pick.
Michael Fassbender would be my second choice. Both men are talented and could pull it off with ease.
Did anyone see that there is a sequel to this book? It is called Shadow of Night and I can't wait to read it.
Rachel wrote: "Did anyone see that there is a sequel to this book? I think it is because Matthew and Diana are the focus of the entire book and I missed Em, Sarah, and the others from the ensemble cast that made the first book so special. Don't get me wrong, it's still great but hopefully the third book will have more interaction between all the characters.

Yes, because it is set in the past the balance of characters has shifted. All in all, I thought it was a solid book but I did prefer the first more. I expect the next book will bring us back to the original cast and explain some mysteries that developed in 'Shadow'.
Love this book!! I read it when it first came out, then had to reread it before reading the sequel. I pictured Michael Fassbender right away. Can he do a french accent? And for Diana I think Erika Christensen would be fabulous! Ysabeau would be played well by Marion Cotillard. I really hope a movie comes through. :D
Faydra wrote: "I think Gaspard Ulliel would be perfect for the role...and he's french as well."He would make a great Kit!
Susana wrote: "Would also say Michael Fassbender. Or maybe Hugh Jackman or even Eric Bana..."I agree that Eric Bana would be a good Matthew. He played Henry the eight in the other bolyn girl. I just feel he could pull the part off well.
Somebody up-thread mentioned Game of Thrones. I think Peter Dinklage would be perfect for Hamish. I am loving the casting suggestions for Matthew, I think you all have some great choices in there particularly Richard Armitage, Eric Bana and Jim Caviezel...my only problem with all 3 of those guys is availability. And would Jim be willing to the sensual scenes that will happen should the second book be made into a movie? He will not do them due to his religious beliefs. Another option, though this actor might be too young (and is from Game of Thrones) is Richard Madden. For some reason when I read the books, I picture him as Matthew. How about Rachel Mc Adams as Diana? Phillipe will be tough to cast as will Ysabeau, both of those actors/actresses will have to have a ton of charisma.
I love looking up all the actors as they are suggested! What a fun way to see all the delicious men in films and television these days (I'm too busy to keep up with all that's put out there to watch). I try to remember that Matthew's character may appear young, he has lived an incredibly long life and experienced a family before he was "reborn". I can't see any actor in their twenties playing Matthew. I love the idea of Luke Evans playing Matthew. (Recommended by at least a few posters earlier in the thread.) He seems to have the grace, sincerity and beauty that would be required. He surely fits the image I had in my head - which is difficult because I don't imagine a current actor as a character I'm reading about.
For those thinking about casting Diana, the description of herself in the book and in the second book "Shadow of Night" references her nose - which seems too long for her face. No cutey little nosed actresses need apply. Someone more serious, I would assume resembling Cate Blanchett (though I feel she might be too old to play the part herself) would fit the bill. (pun intended).
I would say between Matt Bomer and James Marsden... but I didn't imagine Mathew like that.. I just think they're just the best options. :)
So I have changed my mind about Diana :) I am reading the 2nd book now and it describes Diana as being tall, it might have mentioned that in the first book too, but I don't remember. I only remember her being really pretty in a unique way and also her being athletic. Anyway, I think Olivia Wilde would be great :)
I pictured Matthew looking like Mark Strong all the way through the books without even realizing I knew who he was until I started watching "RocknRolla" recently! I'd seen him previously in the Robert Downey Jr. "Sherlock Holmes." Now I simply can't even imagine anyone else as Matthew. He is a little older than Matthew is described in the book, but Matthew is much older than he looks (LOL) and character age vs. actor age is not much of a problem in the movies anyway!
Sonia wrote: "Mary wrote: "Henry Cavil anyone?"OOH, Henry Cavil would do just fine! :)"
Henry Cavil was fabulous as Charles Brandon in "Tudors" but I still stick to Richard Armitage as Matthew. Someone mentioned Sean Bean for Philippe - I absolutely agree! The women are much harder to cast, but Marion Cotillard as Ysabeau could be a good choice.

I LOVE the idea of Sean Bean playing Philipe! I never would have thought of it, but I think that is a perfect fit!
Caviezel? too old. Ulliel? too young Cavill? no way. Bomer? could work. Evans? sure ;) tho My pick would be Richard Armitage
Jenny wrote: "My vote would go to Richard Armitage. I still can't pick a Diana but I think an unknown might be the best option."I second that!
I was unsure of my choice for Matthew but based on suggestions I've seen my top 3 are: Tom Hiddleston, Michael Fassbender, and Henry Cavill. I think Tom has the look and the facial structure as well as the acting chops to pull off the quick emotional changes Mathew goes through at times.
I think Richard Armitage, this is how I pictured Matthew before I knew who Richard Armitage was. Check my pinterest page for others i think would be good. http://pinterest.com/beadgypsy/discov...
Perhaps Tom Weston-Jones, who plays the title character in BBC's series Copper for Matthew?Sean Bean for Gallowglass (because I love Sean Bean)
Kate Winslet for Diana Bishop. I just don't see Claire Danes.
I don't know who for Philippe and Ysabeau.
Matthew is 1500 years old and was about 37 when made a vampire. He needs to be played by a man in his 40s, and preferably an excellent actor. Richard Armitage and Tom Hiddleston, though excellent actors, are too young. George Clooney or David Wenham (if he dyed his hair) might do.

But though he looks younger, :) , Richard Armitage just turned 42 and is exactly the right age. I cannot find any reason why he should not be Matthew and I hope, whoever will be in charge of casting, is of the same opinion!

Both Sasha's and Matthew's eyes are grey-green. And Richard Armitage is older than Sasha, so Sasha being Philippe would be a stretch. But how about Diane Kruger as Diana? I've been wracking my brain, and haven't liked any of the suggestions for her. I think Ms. Kruger would be wonderful. What do you think?
