Anson Mount would be a great Matthew - not sure if he can do the accent but he has the eyes and the bod for it!

VERY much so... even more reason to cast him! :)
Linda wrote: "Richard Armitage immediately came to my mind!"YES! Richard Armitage has that otherworldly, European aristocratic look. Perfect!
Natalie wrote: "Margaret wrote: "Fassbender! Hands down. No question. He is who I pictured when I read the books. Wouldn't mind Benedict Cumberbatch in the role, or Tom Hiddleston. I meant that whoever plays Matthew should prob. be a British actor.
Margot wrote: "For me it would have to be Aidan Turner ( Mitchell the vampire from Being Human)"Ooh, good one. He plays Luke in the Mortal Instruments. When I saw him in that, I was like, Mitchell! I thought you were a vampire, not a werewolf! : ) he also makes a pretty hot dwarf in the Hobbit!
Nancy wrote: "How about Richard Madden, who played Rob in "Game of Thrones" for the Matthew role...?"That's not a bad idea!! I can really see Benedict Cumberbatch as Matthew though. He can pull off the brooding intensity and his accent is seriously sexy.
I like some of the suggestions such as Luke Evans or Tom Hiddleston, although I think some of the others are too old. In the book Matthew is described as being tall, having black hair and appears to be in his mid- to late thirties. So I think if he meets those requirements and can pull off an air of mystery and danger I don't really mind who the actor is as long the movie gets made.
Margaret wrote: "But he's got to be British (or European) with the appropriate amount of gravitas."That sounded (at least to me) like you didn't think he was British. He was F. Scott Fitzgerald in Midnight in Paris, which is one American role that I can think of. Both him and Michael Fassbender would be amazing!
Matthew is kind of a tormented soul, has been for ages. I really can't imagine anyone else than Richard Armitage here. Have you seen him as Thorin in "The desolation of Smaug"? The moment when he enters the mountain? The expression on his face, the emotions Thorin felt, it touched my heart. He is Matthew. No one else (for me, at least ;) ).
Gilles Marini, complete with incredible vampire good looks and French accent.http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1694302/?r...
Tall, lean, pale, European and otherworldly -- I would cast Benedict Cumberbatch as Matthew. I envisioned him as Matthew throughout the first novel.

Why can't Goodreads have a "Like" button?
Richard Armitage so fits the description of Matthew Clairmont (dark hair, tall, long lanky legs, beautiful body, the nose, intelligent, beautiful dark voice, has the ability to play the dark side of Matthew as well as the lover) when I read the books, I think Deborah Harkness must of been dreaming of him when she wrote this. What a wonderful vampire Matthew he would make.
Brizo wrote: "Richard Armitage so fits the description of Matthew Clairmont (dark hair, tall, long lanky legs, beautiful body, the nose, intelligent, beautiful dark voice, has the ability to play the dark side ..."I agree completely. He can be tender, he can be vicious, he has the European flair Matthew has from being around for centuries. He has a fine chiseled face. Richard Armitage is so Matthew. I hope that our input gets out on the wind to whomever directs the series, should it be optioned out. I have hopes, since Outlander is ready to be viewed on Showtime.
Check out Anatomy of Matthew Clarmont starring Richard Armitage on https://www.youtube.com/user/Armitage...
When I picture Matthew Clairmont I do not picture any person that I've already seen. The closest would be Henry Cavill, but even he's not quite right. I would go for an unknown in this case.

I wonder what Warner Brothers see's it as?
Fik wrote: "The actor casted must be of a certain age to be able to portray all 3-4 movie sequels. So they can't possibly choose an exac..."No I don't agree. Movies today are shot very fast 2-3 years max for all three, as you'd want to shoot them together because the story line doesn't make sense without all three pieces. I don't think I could see Matthew Clairmont played as a kid in his 20's, I see him in his 30-40 at least. He's a college professor and so is she that's not a 20 year old person. A younger actor wouldn't have the emotional maturity to play this character.
As for movie audience, one has to remember there are more baby boomers then kids, perhaps if they developed more scripts like this and aimed it at them, their audience would quadruple... Plus this has lots of other vampires that surround Matthew that are younger like his children and nephew that would fit a 18-25 year old. I think the young viewers are more interested in action scripts (look at the Hobbit, it made billions and most of the actors in it are in their late 30's some even older) so I wouldn't tie an actor's age to this, but rather who could carry the role best, what the script offer the young in terms of action sequences (the book offers a lot of possibilities there), and the older viewer in terms of a believable Matthew/Diana love story that spans time.
As for Henry Cavill I think he's not dark enough to fit Matthew's description. Michael Fastbender could carry it off but he doesn't really have the same characteristics as the character in the book. I think Richard Armitage is a much better fit.

I just read that Warner Brothers decided to not develop the Movie/TV rights to Deborah Harkness' All Souls Trilogy and she has the rights back in her hands and is looking for someone else to develop the screen rights project. How sad is that!! Here is what she has to say.http://deborahharkness.com/about-debo...
Sorry to hear this. I was hoping... In the meantime, I am looking forward to one of my other favorites,The Outlander, coming as a series to Starz. Maybe the triology will be optioned out as a mini-series down the road, if not as a movie.
Movie rights reverted back to Harkness from Warner Brothers, see http://deborahharkness.com/about-debo... and I really hope they still make a movie!
At the moment it looks as if there was no movie at all, but if another producer would step in, I'd still support Richard Armitage. Saw him on stage now and he's just WOW!

I agree totally!!
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Benedict Cumberbatch, but I'm not sure he's the one for this role. I think it should be a relatively unknown French actor.

Nice but a bit too "raw" for Matthew I think.

Too common after True Blood. IMHO, Moyer is not tall enough, or suave enough and Paquin is not "soft" enough in looks...needs the coloring to be a coppery redhead, as well as blonde...eyes changeable and not brown.

Just my opinion, as you have yours. I like Moyer and Paquin, just not who I envisioned while reading the trilogy.
