A Discovery of Witches

Who would you like to see play Matthew in the movie, if one were made?
GILLES MARINI!Matthew is described as exceptionally good looking, tall, and French. And he's in a 37-year-old body.
Gilles is hot, tall, and he's actually French. And he's 36. By the time they get around to filming anything, he'll be 37! He's absolutely perfect!
JAnet wrote: "Richard Armitage"He is perfect. Tall. Pale. English/French (I assume). Oh and beautiful.
Coincidentally, I like Matthew Bomer for Matthew and Dianna Agron for Diana. Claire Forlani as Ysabeau. And for some reason, the male witch that threatens Diana throughout the beginning (I can't remember his name or find my copy) always appears in my head as Professor Slughorn from Harry Potter.
glad you like my picks..still haven't got a "feel" for Diana yet... Kathy Bates would be great for one of the aunts....
maybe one of the females that played in The Tudors would make a great Diana..but I'm thinking American would be better since she is American...need to think about that..
I picture the aunts from Practical Magic... Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest. They're both older now, so I'm not thinking of the actresses so much as the whimsy, disheveled, earthy feel that they both gave off. I don't want to see Stepford Wife material when the aunts show up in the movie.

It has been so long since I read the book (or at least it feels that way.) so Matthew is kind of hazy in my mind. But I clicked on your link and it was like I just read the book last week!! Totally agree with your choice!!
just finished watching the BBC show..Little Dorrit (Dickens)....my candidate for Diana is now Claire Foy..as long as she can pull off an American accent....
I think you may have gotten to read it before we discovered it in the USA....I only found out about it when I read the NY Times best seller list.....
Here is where book to movie goes wrong...have any of you read the Janet Evanovich books? They are sooo funny. They would make a great movie. After I read the first book I knew it would make a great movie. Sandra Bullock, Queen Latifa, Estelle Gettys.....PERFECT. But they waited FOREVER and the movie just came out....very bad casting....check it out on-line....I would have liked to see this movie but NOT with this cast...the people that make these decisions need to listen to US !
They did make a Stephanie Plum movie... One For The Money with Katherine Heigl or whatever her name is. Just released like, last month?
That's the one I'm talking about....Katherine Heigl as Stephanie? No WAY! Sandra Bullock would have been perfect! But as I said the book has been out for a long time and the movie took forever. I hope that doesn't happen with WITCHES. Also I heard a long time age that the OUTLANDER series was going to be made into a movie but haven't heard anything about that .
I agree with whoever said Gaspard Ulliel. Picks for Diana include Claire Danes or Rachel McAdams. Though either of those two would probably make Gaspard seem miscast. Hmm...

He fits the Michael I imagined in my head pretty well, though I have no clue who he is.
Also, when I see Alex O'Loughlin, I can't picture him as being graceful like I picture Michael. He's too much of a guy's guy for me, like he belongs in cargo pants and just doesn't look right without either a surfboard or a weapon. I'd even expect him to use a surfboard as a weapon. He's too manly. Michael, while not feminine or anything, feels refined and elegant while radiating an aura of power.
I've also been drinking and should not be allowed access to a keyboard because I'll ramble like I'm doing now. Shutting up now.
Aidan Turner played Mitchell (the vampire) in the hit British series "Being Human" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1349938/. Alex O'Loughlin looks sexy, but he doesn't look "bad boy" (ala vampire) enough for me.
How about Ian Somerhalder? :) He plays wonderfully as Damon in TVD...So I think he would be fitting...
Do we really need this to be a movie? Greeat books are usually ruined in film format and mediocre books well I suppose there is a 50-50 chance either way. Considering the book had portions that were for lack of a better phrase, long, drawn out with too much information and kind of tedious, one can only imagine what that willl translate to in film form. As for who should play the roles, it really does not matter because Hollywood has a method of transforming good looking people into ogres and not so great looking people into handsome males and ravingly beautiful women.
No, we don't need it to be a movie. Regardless, it will probably be made.Movies never do their books justice and this is something we all know and accept. I don't see how a movie could ruin a book for you. If anything, books ruin movies... I think there are quite a few good movies that I no longer enjoyed after reading the book that was so much better.
I must agree, for it is no Lord of the Rings. Most of Harkness's book is all thoughts, description and naps. This will not transform into a very interesting movie. We have only to cross our fingers and hope that for who ever is adapting the book might add in a few more action scenes to keep the audience intrigued.
When you're turning a book into a movie, tons of stuff is left out because you just can't fit it all. The LotR movies would have been days long. So a lot of the thinking and wondering should be covered with new dialogue. When somebody figures something out, they need to say so (and not to themselves in an empty room) since we won't have the thought process. So I expect a change in dialogue, with a couple entirely new scenes that cover at least some of the info we'd miss out on without the character's inner thoughts.I must say, I'm most concerned about Diana's torture. It can go any of 3 ways.
a) It can be tastefully done, instilling the appropriate sense of dread, fear, sympathy, and anger.
b) It can go the other way and be a bloody torture-porn nightmare that belongs in a Hostel movie.
c) It can be completely white washed and turned into something more worthy of a Goosebumps novella.
I loved the torture scene in the book (though I didn't want her to be tortured) and I think Deborah handled it perfectly. She made me run the gamut of emotions and I love her for it. I only hope the movie can do the story justice. I know things will be different from the book, but if it strays too far, it'll be a serious disappointment. The story is what I care about more than whether or not the same dialogue is used or if Diana's napping is properly represented. =)
Yes i agree since the book is very specific and whoever is adapting it will have to stick to it as much as possible and do it justice :)
Ashley wrote: "I was thinking more along the lines of Clive Owen or Johnathon Schaech for Matthew."Clive maybe - Schaech - definitely not - not enough gravitas to pull it off.

That would be my pick too."
That was who I pictured while reading. He is so gorgeous....
I think that this book could be an amazing movie. The storyline is different and smart. Visually beautiful. I worry that they will try to jam it all in, in under two hours. While reading the book, I immediately pictured Henry Cavill. He's my go-to guy for tall, dark and handsome. I loved him in The Tudors. I could also see Joseph Morgan, Klous from Vampire Diaries.
It's wasn't until I finished the book, that I started to picture who Diana could be. I picture Emily Vancamp from Revenge.
This book is easily my favorite that I've read so far this year. I feel I should create a special shelf for it.
Of the ones mentioned so far in this thread, I think Henry Cavill and Michael Fassbender are probably my favorites, probably in that order. Both look pretty much how I pictured Matthew all along, though Cavill a bit moreso.
@ Sandee....agree about Colin Firth@Katherine..no no no not Emily Vancamp..she seems to have only one facial expression...deer in the head lights thing..wasn't fond of her in Brothers and Sisters
Henry Cavill is good!
was thinking about someone for Matthews brother but I need a refresher on what he looks like..help please..
I picture Michael being like, mid-30s. I mean, obviously he's older, but appearance wise... I'm thinking mid-30s, wrinkle-free, etc. Does that seem right? As for Michael's brother, is it weird that I didn't really picture him as anything past an "angry male"...? I was so engrossed in Diana's torture and Michael's freaking out that the brother's physical appearance meant nothing to me. He could have been described as emo-punk with pink eyebrows and I would have been like "Whatever, go save herrr!!!"
i vaguely recall Mathew's brother...i swear he was ginger? And rather burly and broad, but I'm not entirely sure, its been a few months since i finished the book :P all i know is that i couldn't picture anyone upon his described appearance!
I was thinking Benedict Cumberbatch ..he has that cool, vampire look but maybe not burly enough..will have to go back and see how he is described (Michael)
