Who would you like to see play Matthew in the movie, if one were made?

Lyndi W. Copied this from my Kindle. Not much of a physical description.

Baldwin Montclair, as he was known in the financial markets, strode down the hall of the ground floor. His copper-colored hair gleamed in the electric light, and his muscles twitched with the quick reflexes of a born athlete. Trained to wield a sword from childhood, he had been imposing before becoming a vampire, and after his rebirth few dared to cross him. The middle son in Philippe de Clermont’s brood of three male children, Baldwin had been made a vampire in Roman times and had been Philippe’s favorite. They were cut from the same cloth—fond of war, women, and wine, in that order. Despite these amiable characteristics, those who faced him in combat seldom lived to recount the experience.

Deborah E. Harkness - A Discovery of Witches (Kindle Locations 7267-7272)

So all we really know is that Baldwin has copper-colored hair and is probably built like a tank. I kept reading, hoping maybe a facial description or eye color would pop up, but no luck. Unfortunately, "copper colored hair" is usually a red, but it could be an orange-red, a reddish-bronze, auburn, carrot colored... I hate red hair on guys, so I hope they give him a bronze color instead of making him ginger or carrot-top.

JAnet how about Kevin McKidd?

Lyndi W. JAnet wrote: "how about Kevin McKidd?"

You rock! He'd be great =) I wouldn't have thought of him when thinking of redheaded actors because it's not super obviously red. Nice pick.

JAnet Thank you Lyndi...did you watch Grey's Anatomy? That guy can sing!!! Surprised me when he did!

message 105: by JAnet (new) - rated it 5 stars

JAnet oops..DO you watch Grey's....
also I thought he would make a great Jaime in the Outlander series if that ever gets made into a movie..

You must have been a Being Human fan. So sad when he left! I just love him. I don't quite picture him as Matthew though.

Oh yes. He'd be perfect. I think he can really pull of the combination of menace and passion and intensity that would be required.

FYI, Alex played a vampire on Moonlight, which ran for one season on CBS a few years ago. He had much longer hair than he has on Hawaii Five-0. I have trouble seeing Alex as Matthew, much as I adore him and think he's one of the sexiest men alive. I'm still sticking with Fassbender, LOL. There's my top 3 sexiest actors - Alex, Aidan Turner and Fassbender, haha!

JAnet Just started watching Game of Thrones....some very interesting faces/actors there for A Discovery of Witches..

Michelle JAnet wrote: "Just started watching Game of Thrones....some very interesting faces/actors there for A Discovery of Witches.."

Hmm. Peter Dinklage as Hamish? Wasn't Hamish supposed to be a dwarf besides being a daemon? Or am I mis-remembering?

message 111: by JAnet (new) - rated it 5 stars

JAnet He would be perfect..I think you are right about being a dwarf..unless I'm mis-remembering too

Julie Anne wrote: "Agree! wait, there's a movie?"

Well, the rights were sold. I'm mainly talking theoretically, should have clarified that."

I'm a big fan of his too! He is too pretty!!

Lyndi W. Hamish is a daemon. I'm at work, so I don't have my Kindle and can't copy+paste the description of him or the general description of daemons. But I want to say that daemons are on the shorter side of things, but not dwarf-short. That probably sounds offensive, sorry. I picture Matthew as tall and lean; Hamish as short and stocky - not fat or uncommonly short, though... not so much a round belly as a broad chest.

*shrug* I have absolutely put too much thought into this.

Heather Ian Somerholder or Henry Cavill

message 115: by Anne (new) - rated it 4 stars

Anne Stockwell How about Cillian Murphy? I don't think Caviezel has the right range. I love Ulliel's looks but I think he's too young.

Lyndi W. Cillian Murphy creeps me out. He should always play a bad guy.

message 117: by Lyndi W. (last edited Apr 13, 2012 05:09PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lyndi W. Also, to those who are suggesting actors that have or currently play vampiric roles - those actors most likely wouldn't agree to be in the movie for numerous reasons. Sometimes a contract doesn't allow for an actor to play a similar role until his contract has ended. And most actors wouldn't want their two roles confused. Somerholder, for example, is doing really well as Damon in TVD. To go to another role as a vampire would undermine his role as Damon and possibly turn him into a character actor where he is only thought of as "that one actor that's always a vampire"... There is also the fact that you don't want Matthew to be colored by the actor's previous impression of a vampire. Damon and Matthew are very different characters and I'd have a hard time viewing Somerholder play Matthew without seeing Damon.

If this movie is actually made and they cast an actor that had previously played a vampire in another movie/show/etc, I'd be absolutely floored and kinda pissed.

And I mean no offense to those of you who are suggesting Ian Somerholder. He is totally hot and is good at what he does. But I don't think he'd even be a viable option to the movie-makers for the reasons stated above.

Michelle I have to agree with Lyndi. I think Ian Somerhalder is great as Damon Salvatore, and he is totally hot (lol), but I don't think he's right for the part of Matthew. My main thing is I think he looks too young for the part. Matthew should be a bit more mature looking IMO. He was in his late 30s when he was turned, and at the time he was turned, that would have been middle aged or more than.

I think I'd still vote for Michael Fassbender of all those mentioned in the thread so far. He's the closest to how I pictured Matthew while reading the book.

message 119: by Bethany Ward (new)

Bethany Ward I absolutely agree with the prospect that actors will not take on a role they have already done. This is of course true. But I must persist on having Luke Evans as Mathew because he is tall, dark and handsome and in an interview claimed he wanted to vary his roles. He was Zeus in Immortals, Aramis in The Three Musketeers, Apollo in Clash of the Titans and is now to play the famous archer Bard the Bowman in the upcoming Hobbit Movie. Over all he plays some very interesting characters and he can fence, use a bow and arrow and ride horses, as well as sing like an Angel because he started out in the West End. Whilst reading the book, he was who I could see as Mathew because when Harkness mentioned Mathew with slicked back hair in a black suit, I thought of how much Evans' black suit suited him at the Immortals Premiere. He's very good at serious and powerful yet in real life he's funny and exciting. You might know him better as Detective Fields in The Raven. He is a very good actor and I must work him into your minds!
A about the Game of Thrones: YES! I love that show! I'm just upset that they killed Sean Bean at the end of the first season, he was one of the best characters! All i'm saying is I hope the Lanister's get what's coming to them...

message 120: by JAnet (new) - rated it 5 stars

JAnet black suit, slicked back hair..Richard Armitage still gets my vote...right age too

Ahh i just started watching Game of Thrones so the death of Sean Bean needed a spoiler alert ..but since I read the book I knew that he dies..I just saw him in the first episode of Missing....don't know where his character is going there since it appeared that he died...don't tell me if he didn't please! ;-)

message 121: by Bethany Ward (new)

Bethany Ward oops!!! sorry about the spoiler!!!!

Michelle I just finished reading for the second time this weekend. And read that there was a possible movie. Jude Law may be a bit old but he knows how to arch a brow properly. I also thought of Orlando Broom. But the guy who has the look of Mathew de Claremont is the french eye candy from Brothers and Sisters. Mathew is french not British. Ok, looked up Matt Bomer guy. Gilles Marini is the french guy. Ok never mind just looked up Richard Armitage his head shot on imbd screams vampire!

message 123: by JAnet (new) - rated it 5 stars

JAnet YES! Another vote for my man Richard Armitage! But the guy from Brothers and Sisters ...I LOVED that show....would be my second choice!

Nattaporn Must be more interesting with a new actor.

Jennifer Christian wrote: "Tracy wrote: "Matt Bomer"

OH YES! :) Look at those blue eyes! He suits the role. Michael Fassbender possibly, but Matt Bomer, YES!

message 126: by JAnet (new) - rated it 5 stars

JAnet I didn't know Matt Bomer before this post so I looked him up...sorry no way.....Matthew has lived a number of years..he has to be smart, worldly, incredibly intelligent and in his late 30's ..only Richard Armitage will do ! But then again I casted the Stephanie Plum series and no one I wanted was in in the recent movie but that's only because they waited tooooo long to make it into a movie. So sad!

message 127: by jackie (new) - rated it 5 stars

jackie frye This discussion brings to mind the one of the reasons I prefer books to movies – I decide, based on the author’s description, who a character looks like. When Tom Hanks was selected to play Robert Langdon I was appalled because he did not look at all like the Robert in my head. If anyone reading this is a Black Dagger Brotherhood fan, can you imagine the problems with casting? There are not that many muscle bound, smokin’ hot actors over 6’ in Hollywood much less 6’6”!

Lyndi W. I like to see the movies first, then read the books. This works for a couple of reasons:
#1. When I read the book, I have the movie characters to picture in my head. If the characters look vastly different, I can edit my imagination. I personally have a very hard time "creating a face" from a description.
#2. The book is always better. So, I can enjoy the movie as an unknown story. And then I read the book. While the movie may not be all that great in comparison, I was able to enjoy it for a while. Then I'm totally won over by the book. Twice the satisfaction... sometimes you just have to grab it where you can.

In ADoW's case, I will undoubtedly be disappointed in the movie because it won't be the book. It may have been the best freaking movie ever (for me) if I hadn't previously read the book. Now my opinion of the movie will be colored by my love for the book.

But that's just me and I've also been told I'm crazy, sooo... you may just want to smile, nod, and pretend it'll all be okay.

Lyndi,
I don't think you are at all crazy. I watched the first season of True Blood before I read the books and had I read the books first I would hate the series because after season two they seemed to throw the books out the window. When I watch True Blood I do not think if it in terms of the books - I just enjoy a totally different story and enjoy looking at Alex.

Caviezel is too old and he's not exactly a great actor. Anybody seen him in that TV series he's in right now? Wooden.

message 140: by Tiger (new) - rated it 4 stars

Tiger I agree with whoever said GILES MARINI. Whoever it is should be French and HAS to be tall. Marini has the intensity that's balanced with gentleness, the maturity, as well as the potential for fierce and dark. At 6'1" he's iffy on height, but do-able. If not Marini or another Frenchman, then GORAN VISNJIC. He has all the qualities of Marini, at 6'4". I'd like to see what Zachary Levy (6'4")could do, but he'd have to prove himself for depth, intensity and French accent. Of the names others have listed, I go with Henry Cavil or Ben Barnes, leaning toward the former. Matt Bomer is too white-bread. Same with Diana Agron. She's also too young to be Diana.

Jennifer Williams I think Id faint if Fassbender were cast. I loved him as Mr Rochester...sigh

message 144: by Lindy (last edited Jun 23, 2012 07:31AM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Lindy I don't normally comment on threads like this, but I would love to see Aidan Turner. He's possibly a bit too young, but he does a fantastic job portraying a Vampire on the UK show "Being Human." I thought of him when imagining Matthew... but they'd have to clean him up a bit more than he is in "Being Human."

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2636108/

Kathleen First choice: Orlando Bloom - born in England 1977. Second choice: Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn, Lord of the Rings.)

message 146: by Tiger (new) - rated it 4 stars

Tiger I can see Aidan Turner. I'm re-reading the book right now, and Richard Armitage is still fitting the bill. Whoever they get, I hope they don't make the Interview With the Vampire mistake and cast someone like Tom Cruise.

Heather For some reason Matthew McConaughey springs to mind for the role of matthew, although I'm unsure whether he would be able to do the voice

I would be SO into that. Matthew Clairmont is my fictional husband, and I am in such crazy Catholic schoolgirl lust with Jim Caviezel it isn't even cute anymore.

Fauuzzie As I was reading this, I was also rewatching the Buffy series. So...hehe...I've stamped David Boreanez as Matthew Clairmont. But that's because he's already done broody, overprotective vampire.

I definitely do not think he should play Matthew (I actually don't even want to see the movie, if one was made), but I still can't separate Boreanez and Clairmont!! The torture!!

OK, in 'High Crimes' maybe (you never wanna be the guy who's mean to Ashley Judd), and as the redneck terrorist character in 'Deja Vu.' (The neck tattoo...yeah, a little sleazy.) Usually, he's just Sadly Misunderstood Intense Guy, as in 'The Count of Monte Cristo' or 'Angel Eyes.'
