Judithe | 6566 comments I've been dying to have it for over a year! (Still jealous that you had it in your hands so early!!!) I'm pretty sure I'll like/love it, too. Less than 100 pages of Eldest...then Fair Game is my reward for finishing it. My 4 a.m. wake up is catching up with me...but hopefully I can check Eldest off my list before I crash (one of the longest, actually-have books on Mt. TBR...so close...not sure which is drawing me now~the excitement in the story or the excitement of finishing it, finally!)

AH | 2271 comments I stopped reading that series after Eldest. I just couldn't get into it anymore. Maybe the movie of the first book just killed the series for me.

I'm doing the same thing. My son likes it and is waiting for the Japanese version of the new one (Inheritance??), but it just doesn't do it for me, mood thing? Length thing (not against long books, this just feels like it's longer than it needs to be...) Language? Attitude? Just cannot pinpoint what is bothering me about this. 56 pages to go...

Thenia | 977 comments Sorry for being away for so long, team. Real Life's been running me rugged lately and I haven't really had time for much lately.

I finished my book for Magic and I'll update our stats soon. If I'm not mistaken we're due for another stamp!

Till the next update, enjoy your PNR-UF picks!

Thenia | 977 comments Magic Study (Study, #2) by Maria V. Snyder by Maria V. Snyder - ★★★ (03/26/2012)

A nice, but not particularly necessary addition to the series.

My favorite characters by far are ones we've already met and liked in the previous book, Valek being the top with Ari and Janco following closely behind. I can't say I like Yelena very much, although she does have her moments.

Most of the newly introduced characters feel a bit two dimensional without real personalities, only traits of them. Some dialogues felt a little forced, and so did some of the reactions of certain characters, meant only to cause the necessary effects for the plot to continue.

The plot itself has its interesting points, but compared to the first book's rhythm doesn't really come up to scratch.

The book ends paving the way for its sequel, the third and last book of the series which I'll read, but not in a hurry.

AH | 2271 comments Finished my PNR-UF shelf book Magic to the Bone (Allie Beckstrom, #1) by Devon Monk - 3/27/12 - 3 stars

Magic to the Bone is the first book in Devon Monk's Allie Beckstrom series. The author has created an interesting world where magic is used by people of various abilities. Allie is the estranged daughter of a wealthy businessman who has a patent on some magical devices that allow people to conduct magic safely. In this world, magic always has a price to the user - usually something painful.

I liked Allie's character and I admired her tenacity. Zayvion Jones was an intriguing love interest. I'm still not sure what he is exactly.

I will continue to read this series.

Fair Game (Alpha & Omega #3) by Patricia Briggs ★★★★★ 3/27/12

A book well worth waiting for!

This is #3 in the Alpha & Omega series. Some time has passed since Charles & Anna's last story, and they have settled into their new relationship. However, like any real relationship, it's not all happiness, especially when Charles is holding back in order to protect Anna, but hurting her at the same time.

Protecting Charles is also Anna's goal, and a chain of events is set into motion, starting with her petition to Bran. This leads the pair to Boston on the trail of a serial killer, and ends with them closer together, but their world is being thrown into another incredible change.

Briggs keeps the action and tension moving right along...making it impossible to put down! I hate the long wait between books, but the books she crafts make the wait worthwhile. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next, certain we'll get glimpses in Mercy's next story. (Also, loved that we're seeing more connection, and glimpses of Mercy & crew).

That's what I love about that series. The couple goes through all sorts of realistic spats that normal couples would (just a little more exaggerated). No twu wuv right away. They need to work on their relationship. Plus - it makes the make up scenes all the better.

Thenia | 977 comments Lover Reborn (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #10) by J.R. Ward by J.R. Ward - ★★★★ (04/01/2012)

A fun ride, as expected! The familiar drama and over-the-top macho speech we missed since the last book are here, and so are many of our favorite characters from previous books in the series.

Tohrment is... tormented. His situation sucks, but he isn't really helping himself any, even though he says he's trying. "No'One"'s situation isn't much better, though hers is mostly self inflicted. They both handle their problems (or not) in the wrong way, and they end up making things even harder than they have to be.

Apart from those two, we get to see John and Xhex as a newly mated couple that stumbles upon its first problems, which, yes, following the example of the two above, they handle completely wrong.

The Band of Bastards that made its debut in the previous book (or was it the one before that?) have a bigger role in this one, letting us in on the innermost thoughts of the leader and his right hand man. I can't say I'm impressed by either, although Throe sounded interesting at first. Xcor has lots of issues which I'm sure we'll hear aaall about in following installments, same as Throe's, no doubt.

We also get tiny glimpse of Qhuinn, Blay and the Chosen Layla that only whet the appetite for the following book which comes out a year from now.
Looking forward to finally reading their story!

Thenia | 977 comments Finished my "Reader's choice" book:

The Plumed Bonnet (Signet Regency Romance) (Dark Angel, #4) by Mary Balogh by Mary Balogh - ★★★★ (04/02/2012)

You know what they say about "assumptions", right? Well, this story is a good example of that saying. Our hero gets himself in a bind because he assumes certain things about our heroine. Our heroine assumes she knows his reasons for acting the way he did and feels like she owes him a huge debt.

Stephanie is very naive at the beginning and she goes on to "repay her debt" by changing everything about herself to suit what she thinks Alistair expects. No matter how much you may think you owe someone, I find it hard to believe that changing what makes you you is the way to pay them back.

The misunderstanding keeps dragging on while our heroes try to deal with their new circumstances, and finally Alistair takes a risk and does the right thing and they both have to decide how to move on from there.

An enjoyable story that also included scenes with characters we've met in previous books as well as their offspring.

Shelskharma | 56 comments Review for my PNR-UF book:

Iron Kissed (Mercy Thompson #3)
byPatricia Briggs

★★★★✩ (03/31/2012)
This is the third of Patricia Briggs “Mercy Thompson” series. Mercy is the only known “walker”, a part human who can change form at will to a Coyote. Raised by werewolves, Mercy has an interesting past, and lives her life with one foot in the “human” world, the other in the supernatural. She is a likable heroine, who has spunk, smarts and courage, without becoming to perfect.

I feel like this series almost melds several styles- sifi, a little romance, and mystery. I actually really enjoyed the mystery aspect of this book this week. The storyline really drew me in. Also, the development of the romantic relationship in Mercys life made me happy. Looking forward to #4 very soon!

AH | 2271 comments Finished my Reader's choice book
Lover Reborn (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #10) by J.R. Ward 4/4/12 - 3 stars
I’ve enjoyed the Black Dagger Brotherhood books. While I am not a “rabid” fan, I’ve usually found this series to be a nice diversion from real life. The earlier books were addictive for me and I just couldn’t get enough. I mean, think about it, this is a series where the males are huge, muscled, and well-endowed. They take care of their women. It’s a no-brainer.

Lover Reborn was an OK read for me. It had its enjoyable moments but too often those moments were offset with angst. I understand that this book needed to be emotional and I’m OK with that but it was just a little too much for me.

There were things about Lover Reborn that drove me crazy. There were too many characters, points of view, and story lines to keep track of. Some of the transitions were a little choppy, too. Some of the language and Wardisms were difficult to understand. I found myself rereading several passages. I also did not understand why a newly mated couple could have so many marital problems so early into their mating. John and Xhex suffered from too much angst that could have been easily rectified by a little communication.

Will I read the next book? Most probably, though not right away….
