Siobhan Pratt (siobhanpratt) Hi Hilton, and welcome to this Goodreads group. I was in High School in the Western Transvaal in the 1980s. Boy, did they feed us a different perspective on the truth of what was happening in our country at that time. I grew up with a distorted knowledge of the political situation surrounding our sunny little teenage lives. I only learnt what was truly happening once I got to Wits, as Apartheid was ending.
I will definitely download and read your book, and I imagine will be suitably moved, and will share it on my Old Girls FB page.

All the best with your Indie publishing journey. It will be interesting for you to share with us in this forum the differences in your experience between traditional and self publishing.

hear from you soon! Siobhan.

Hi Siobhan

So nice to meet someone from 'my nek van die wereld!'

I am sure you will enjoy the book, although "enjoy" is probably not the correct word. You will be moved -- that I absolutely guarantee.

I spent part of my life in Carletonville which, in those days, was part of the Western Transvaal.

Where do you live nowadays?

Hope you have a "lekker" day.

Maureen Driscoll Hi. And thanks for starting this group. I just self-published my third Regency romance novel about the Kellington family. All three can be found on my author page: NEVER A MISTRESS, NO LONGER A MAID; NEVER MISS A CHANCE; NEVER WAGER AGAINST LOVE. By the way, it is tough to come up with "never" titles and I have three to go. My books are, uh, explicit romance novels with happy endings and some humor along the way. I hope you enjoy them!

Jaye Frances | 21 comments Hi, everyone,

I'm Jaye Frances, a new member to the group, and an indie author. I appreciate the opportunity to join this forum and tell you a little bit about myself and my work. Hope you find something interesting - I'd love to chat with you on this thread!

I've published three books to date. Here's a little info about them:

"The Kure"

The Kure

The Kure by Jaye Frances

John Tyler, a young man in his early twenties, awakens to find a ghastly affliction taking over his body. When the village doctor offers the conventional, and potentially disfiguring, treatment as the only cure, John tenaciously convinces the doctor to reveal an alternative remedy—a forbidden ritual contained within an ancient manuscript called the Kure.

Although initially rejecting the vile and sinister rite, John realizes, too late, that the ritual is more than a faded promise scrawled on a page of crumbling paper. And as cure quickly becomes curse, the demonic text unleashes a dark power that drives him to consider the unthinkable—a depraved and wicked act requiring the corruption of an innocent soul.

Ultimately, John must choose between his desperate need to arrest the plague that is destroying his body, and the virtue of the woman he loves, knowing the wrong decision could cost him his life.

http://www.amazon.com/The-Kure-ebook/...

For those who dare, there is some interesting (and frightening) background info about the history and storyline of "The Kure" on my blog posts of Feb. 6 and 9, titled Myths, Legends and Lies. You've been warned . . .

"The Possibilities of Amy"

The Possibilities of Amy by Jaye Frances

The Possibilities of Amy

Amy is the ultimate trophy girl—gorgeous face, killer body, and a vivacious personality. But there’s something else about her, something that makes her even more special. Amy is new. A transfer student from out of state, she’s starting her senior year without knowing a soul. And that means she’s up for grabs, available.

Infatuated from the moment he sees her, David is determined to meet Amy, and if the fates are willing, to spend the rest of his life with her. But his shyness prevents him from approaching her—until his friends devise a contest to determine who will be the first to prove their manhood by seducing her.

http://www.amazon.com/The-Possibiliti...

This one is especially personal for me. When I attended a high school reunion, I met a man who told me he carried a torch for me all through high school. It got me thinking about all the "secret loves" I had, and a story was born . . .

"The Cruise-All That Glitters"

The Cruise - All That Glitters by Jaye Frances [

[book:The Cruise - All That Glitters|13640648]

It’s love on the high seas for Dean, a thirty-something bachelor taking his first cruise, hoping for a shipboard romance. On the prowl for the elusive hard-body, he quickly becomes disillusioned, wondering if his expectation of a boatload of beautiful sea nymphs is something found only in travel brochures.

Until he meets Angel.

She is the girl of his dreams, brought to life as a bewitching goddess, ready to engage in every sensual delight. Quickly lured into submission by Angel’s seductive charms, Dean is ready to surrender his heart and soul to this provocative beauty.

Until he meets Marcie . . .

http://www.amazon.com/The-Cruise-That...

This was a joy to write, as two of my favorite pastimes are traveling and people-watching. Throw in a good dose of humor and romance, and well, nothing better than hi-jinks at sea!

Thank you in advance for your comments and ideas.

In 2065 a nuclear strike was initiated that almost resulted in the annihilation of all mankind.

The year is now 2102 and against the odds the Sanctuary colony and its inhabitants have thrived.

Meanwhile on the distant planet of Ashen 2, a team of scientists have made an unprecedented breakthrough that could herald a new golden era for the survivors of the Earth.
Though when communications are inexplicably lost, an elite special forces unit are sent to investigate and amongst the team is Robert Hewson.

Hewson is an experimental physicist who is responsible for the on-going terraforming of Mars, and, more importantly, bringing his late father’s dream of the planet having a breathable atmosphere to fruition.

Something has been watching them from beyond the veil and the fight for survival has begun.

J.C. (jcjoranco) | 7 comments Hello everyone, my name is J.C. Henderson, and I am another self-published author, though I don't write in any particular genre. I write Fiction, usually novels though I have been known to write a short story or two. I have thus far only published one novel, "Halfway To Nowhere", which I will post the synopsis and such here:

Halfway to Nowhere by J.C. Henderson

"Alex Smith is an ordinary joe lost in an ordinary world, a cruel and dreary place where nothing turns out as planned. He works the night shift at a dead end job that barely pays the bills, his sleazy landlord swindles any money that's left over, his apartment only a tiny box with roaches for company. His absent father suddenly walks back into his life asking for redemption, his friends gone or unavailable. What makes matters worse is that Alex is taunted by recurring dreams where he wakes to an empty world, where there is no one left around but him, nothing but empty streets and an empty city. Put simply, his life is a boat without oars in a sea of shallow water, and all he wishes for is some inkling to life purpose, a direction to happiness and self worth.

"When Lexi, a recently impregnated prostitute crosses his path, he invites her to stay with him for a time until she can get her own life together. This small act of kindness will send him down a bizarre spiral of events that will change his life in a way he never could have predicted, and into a shape that could only come from life itself."

Hazel West | 118 comments I'm an author and here's my books: Ballad of the Highwayman by Hazel B. West Freedom Come All Ye by Hazel B. West

"Ballad of the Highwayman" is about a highwayman (obviously) who's trying to find the man who betrayed his father and had him killed. It's a traditional old-fashioned adventure/swashbuckler/romance novel and I had a great time writing it. I have two excerpts that you can find on my profile to read. If you do, please leave me a comment and let me know what you think of them!

"Freedom Come All Ye" is a YA book about William Wallace as a teenager. Since not a lot is known about his childhood, I thought it would be a fun idea to write a book about him at age sixteen. I took all the stories there are about him from his younger days and kind of put them together to create this story and added my own villain into the mix. I also have an excerpt of this book too.

Damon Marbut (damonferrellmarbut) | 15 comments The following is the back cover description on the soon-to-be-released-through-Amazon (late June/early July) print version of my novel, Awake in the Mad World, followed by a discussion of theme in parentheses. It is already available in the Apple ibookstore, on Kobo, and any minute now, Nook. Kindle will come a few weeks after print.

“I hadn’t thought of it, in real truth. I hadn’t thought about love because when I was at work, I didn’t think, I am at work. I hadn’t thought, when I was at the grocery store, I am at the store. We just are where we are. We’re in what we’re in.”

Pete Rattigan is a frustrated young newspaper journalist caught up in uncertainty of the post-graduate “real world”. One night, one seemingly minor encounter sparks a philosophical journey which leads him to discover that in the most beautiful or even cruel moments of life, the power of friendship explains the power of the universe. And that perhaps there is no such thing as chance. With force, humor and sensitivity Damon Ferrell Marbut presents his debut, Awake in the Mad World, which frees its audience to believe again in the wildness of the young American heart, how it beats just to prove that it will always survive and succeed on its own terms.

(((Elements of my novel Awake in the Mad World are, inarguably, “coming of age, identity and self-discovery”. But also, it’s about place, and asks, Where do the dreamers fit in? Where, in the modern American conversation that’s been changed by technology and is continuing to be changed by the political landscape? How we communicate and what we’re communicating about is managing some sort of odd relevance and mindlessness simultaneously. Is the importance of one’s search for Self in this country being put on the backburner as greed and survival take precedent? Though the novel’s characters representing this search are post-graduates in their mid-twenties, the disillusioned and disenfranchised in our culture are of all demographics, ages, income ranges, genders and ethnicities. My novel is about human relationships, also, and how the growth and purity of our ambitions are shaped and altered by the friends and family we include on our path to wholeness.

As this is a literary non-genre novel, after three years I decided to publish this book myself, recognizing fully the struggle I would continue to face while attempting to sell the risk of a debut novelist to an agent, editor or publisher already anxious about the changing publishing industry. I do hope my novel is a memorable read for you, and thank you in advance for reading it. I look forward to your ratings and reviews.)))

Graham Miller (graham_h_miller) | 11 comments Hi

I'm an author, I've published a non-fiction book over five years ago, The Busy Pagan, about adapting paganism to life in the modern world. From there I wrote a few articles for Llewellyn.

But I really like writing fiction. My third novel (all unpublished so far) was The Fifth Warrior, a tale set in the future but using past-life regression to explore war throughout history. I got about 95,000 words in over three years. Over the time I was writing it I learnt a lot about plot and structure and where my weaknesses lie. So, I've left that one aside for a bit before it gets some serious red-pen action.

I'm now writing a mystery thriller with a slight psychic paranormal and Buddhist edge to it, set in the UK. I'm currently crash-writing it, attempting to get about 100,000 words down within about three months! So far, so good anyway!

Oh, and I've a blog at http://grahamhmiller.com

thanks

Graham

Hey Graham - have you considered taking part in any of the NaNo challenges? CampNaNo is going on this month and August as well (I think) so you can jump in and get some encouragement and support for hitting your word count goal!

Graham Miller (graham_h_miller) | 11 comments Kathryn - yes, I've seen NaNoWriMo for a while now but I never seem to be about to start a project at the right time to start it!

But it has been a huge inspiration for me in terms of developing the "just get on with it" attitude!

Thanks

Graham
