Yup. Still do. I was there for Guy Fawkes in 2012. It was brilliant. When I was a kid we'd have a bonfire every year in the backyard and roast potatoes in it, whilst dad helped me let off pretty fireworks. I used to save my money for the ones I loved like "Golden Rain", "Bridal Veil", and "Roman Candle". So much pretty.

According to my mum Australia has NEVER celebrated Guy Fawkes. Might have something to do with Aussie's founding father's being crooks, whilst New Zealand's were upright citizens. *grins*

Australia used to have fireworks on something called Empire Day, which I have no idea when or what that was. These days, of course, we go bat shit with them on New Year's Eve and Australia Day instead.

Gretchen (eab2012) My dad makes fireworks for a living. It's kind of awesome.

Cool job your Dad has, Gretch.

I think they're illegal all over Australia, unless they are culturally appropriate.

For example, in Melbourne, Chinese stores can sell them to Chinese customers only for the rituals of Chinese New Year.

Enzo (enzobalc) | 12 comments Oh I loved "Bonfire Night" or Guy Fawkes night. Lots of fireworks and as a kid whenever there is a chance for fireworks its a win!
Although I can't remember burning the Guy ever. My family didn't care for that and neighbours liked the fireworks so I only saw it after the movie.
Upright citizens Ha !

message 10458: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments We didn't go in for burning Guys either.

We took the bonfires, the fireworks, the potatoes and the toffee apples and that was it.

Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 657 comments Hi all! I've been gone and trying to be social again. I hope everyone has had a good October and I miss you guys. I'm determined to make an effort to be on here more.

I also feel like I can finally provide an update without inflicting major psychological trauma on myself. Some of you already know that I've lost my girlfriend at the end of September. She was in a car accident, she wasn't the driver, a friend was, and they were hit by a drugged driver. Its been hard. Since then I've broken my lease and moved back in with my parents. And had to deal with a whole bunch other crap (support same-sex marriage because without that stupid piece of government paper its all so much harder and traumatic, even with a will). So I'm soldiering on and forced myself to get back into the swing of things and participate in social interactions that do not involve being physically kidnapped by my friends or parents. Which is why I am glad to find the group just as awesome as it was before, all my favorite regulars hanging out in here too.

Good to see all those upright kiwi citizens spending so much of there lives here with the crooks, setting an example for us. Bahahaha, you do know it's the bloody mainland right!?!?

Aahhh you kiwis, even half, are alright, :))))

Besides its not just one night, the local idiots will chucking them around for weeks.

message 10468: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Empire Day is/was on or about May 24. We still celebrate it as Victoria Day here in Canada, or better known as May Two-Four. (doubly because cases of bear were generally sold with 24 bottles, that's not necessarily so anymore), and for us, marks the start of summer and binge drinking weekends for year. For those so inclined of course.

message 10471: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) Alicja, it breaks my heart to hear what you are going through. There are times when I can't believe I live in a country that won't allow basic civil rights to all of its citizens. To loose someone you love and then to have to fight to be recognized as a part of their life, is a tragedy of its own. I hope you are able to find the strength to make it through your difficult time.

Allie, I've been wondering where you were. There hasn't been anyone to like all of my status updates :)

I moved over the weekend and then there was all this drama and I didn't have internet service but now I do, so you'll be seeing all my "likes" again.

Thanks for thinking of me buddy :)

Robin | 98 comments Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to make an announcement. Tonight will be a momentous milestone of my life. As of today I will now be able to legally buy a pint. As today is my 18th birthday. So tonight I will be putting this privilege to very good use. Tonight my first "legal" pint as an adult will be bought! Preferably I won't be doing most of the buying, I'll buy the first one of course just because I can!

My first trip to the USA I was in PA for 4th July.

Terri | 19576 comments Dear A&M members,
Don't know how to break this to you all. I know that many of you have suspected what I am about to say and while it won't come as a surprise, I know you'll be shocked to see someone come out and say it.

It would appear that former member of this group, Derek, faked his death and was back active on Goodreads as his sister Molly.

I am really sorry to break this to those who didn't suspect.
There were a lot of giveaways, but most of them came with the weird suddenness of his death and the sister's activities on Goodreads.

I noted yesterday that the other group 'Molly' was in, had already removed her/him from the group. She/he gave that group a verbal spray on his Molly profile and today I see Molly has deleted out of Gr and removed his/her comments as he went.

This has been an awful moment for many of us. Being taken advantage of so that this person could, (at a guess) get lots of attention, have a fresh start on this site?? Who knows why he did it really. But being taken advantage of because you all have big hearts and care for others is unforgiveable.. I am unbelievably sickened and angered that I suspected a bad egg and then let this guy come into this group and do this to you all.
I started to suspect even before Derek completed his fake death. I feel I should have shut it down before it got that far and many of you got your hearts broken.

I know this is all very shocking, but I have to ask that we don't make too large a discussion of it here in group.
Speak about it, you are entitled to. Air your grievances or feelings on the matter if you wish.
This person brought his lies into this group and made it our business. So, feel free to react openly here if you would like to. But if you feel you have too much to say about this event, or too many questions that you want answering, please contact me in private and we can discuss.
We come here to enjoy each others company, so lets clean up this mess and get back to that as soon as possible. :)

There are people genuinely suffering in this world. lets give no more of our emotions and thoughts to someone who's suffering will only be that he had real friends on this site and he chose to screw it all up with the worst of lies.

Regards,
Terri

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I agree with Terri on this issue.

I too had my suspicions before the "death".

message 10483: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I have a gut feeling a lot of people suspected and felt guilty for being cynical.
Decided to announce this in the open so you all can see others felt the same way and there was no reason to feel guilty.

Terri | 19576 comments Its pretty heavy. So heavy I had to think long and hard about coming forth.

I guess its all for attention. The world is full of fakers I suppose. Look how many people claim to be war veterans and aren't.
I've had people pretend to be someone they aren't on GR before. one guy who went to elaborate lengths to make myself and some others think he was an Intelligence officer in the US military. I checked into him when he deleted out of Gr suddenly one day and found out he was a band leader in the US Army. Found a picture of him leading the band.

message 10489: by Alicja (new)

Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 657 comments That's awful! I get omissions and vagueness on the internet when someone wants to remain anonymous but that's taking advantage of people.

Some lies just seem ridiculous, I would think an intelligence officer in the military would be cautious in what they disclose on the internet.

message 10490: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Yeah the military guy. Something hadn't been right about him from the start. He had been too forthcoming with details about himself. It didn't click to me. I thought he was faking, but I decided it was harmless enough.
Sad that he felt he needed to lie about what he did in the military. He shouldn't have been ashamed of being in the military band. Its a job.

message 10491: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) I understand that the Internet and social media allow us all a certain amount of anonymity but there's a line. I think it was important you posted that Terri and I can't imagine how hard it was for you to make that statement.

message 10492: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Thanks, Gretchen. It was hard. Still sick in the gut. very, very awkward thing to have to do.

I wish I could have got Dawn to do it. But, unfortunately, she doesn't get paid enough to convince her to do it...;D

message 10493: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) And now starts the campaign to get Dawn a raise!

message 10494: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments haha!

I currently pay her in pats on the back.
But alas, there are no stores in Canada where she can spend her pats on the back.. O_o

Therefore, a pats on the back raise may not be well received.

message 10495: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) lol

Especially as my required personal space only permits virtual pats!

message 10496: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) My kudos also to Terri for posting this, not an easy thing to do in the least but rather nice to have it out in the open nevertheless.

message 10497: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments All I will say about the matter is that I wish that person finds a healthier means of coping with whatever issues they are experiencing, than the method they chose to use here on GR.

This is true. They are like the minimum wage of pats on the back.
