message 10401: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) The paperback version was released in September if I am not mistaken. I was able to get a copy from my library system when we read it for the group read.

message 10402: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) That could be what I was seeing. I wasn't looking very close.

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Morning. *yawns* Anything exciting happen while I was having a long weekend break?

message 10404: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I think it was released in the US January 1 in hardback?? Not sure though.

Ummm...not really. The Goodreads awards are up again and they're pretty much all chick books. So, ah, the opposite of exciting I suppose. ;)

message 10406: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Yeah I was just looking. A load of complete crap. I haven't read a single one of them.

message 10407: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Neither have I..and nor would I. Most are too modern for me (era wise) and most are love stories.

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Even the cook books are rubbish this year. :(

message 10409: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I voted for the Gluten Free one just because but none of them looked particularly good.

I was just impressed that I knew who a quarter of the authors were, that's better than usual...

I guess they go by Popular. I'd guess many folks have read them only because of the ads on here. Very few even interested me and I've only read one or two from all the lists total.

Andy | 1511 comments Even the girls are saying the choices are too girly, how think we're making of the choices on offer!

I tried voting for one..... Lawrence in Arabia War, Deceit, Imperial Folly and the Making of the Modern Middle East by Scott Anderson which is apparently inelligible.... like twas last year too i think. :(

message 10413: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments They wouldn't let me write in Tabula Rasa (Gaius Petreius Ruso, #6) by Ruth Downie in histfic. I'm wondering if they have a space for write-ins just to go thru the motions, then disqualify everything...

is that one published in the US, Andy?

That's odd. That is definitely published in the US isn't it, Jane? Not a UK import?

message 10416: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I think there must be a lot of people voting in and not realising it has to be published in the US during a certain time frame.
I saw heaps of Giles Kristian fans wre on his Facebook page saying they are doing vote in votes for his new release God of Vengeance. Giles is encouraging them. I am pretty sure that one hasn't been released in the US yet and they are all wasting their votes.

Some have said that are voting for the new Cornwell, The Empty Throne. that is another one that isn't released in the US until next year.
GR should put a bold notification above the write in vote window to say the books must be published in the US between such and such a date to be elligible.

Terri | 19576 comments here are the Eligibility Rules for the Awards.

Books published in the United States in English, including works in translation and other significant rereleases, between November 17, 2013, and November 15, 2014, are eligible for the 2014 Goodreads Choice Awards. Books published between November 16, 2014, and December 31, 2014, will be eligible for the 2015 awards.

We analyze statistics from the millions of books added, rated, and reviewed on the site in 2014 to nominate 15 books in each category. Opening round official nominees must have an average rating of 3.50 or higher. Write-in votes may be cast for eligible books with any average rating, and write-in votes will be weighted by the book’s number of ratings to determine the top five books to be added as official nominees in the Semifinal Round. A book may be nominated in no more than one genre category, but can also be nominated in the Goodreads Author category. Only one book in a series may be nominated per category. An author may receive multiple nominations within a single category if he or she has more than one eligible series or more than one eligible stand-alone book.

Terri | 19576 comments Well this is a pain. Now Goodreads is slipping book recommendations into my updates feed.
Isn't it enough to put recommendations everywhere else I look on GR?

The bugger of the recommendations thing is that if I go and untick all the boxes in the area I ticked favourite genres in many years ago, GR will then send me random recs of their choosing.

*grumble, grumble*

message 10421: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I haven't seen any in my updates feed yet. I think they just test things out on you!

message 10422: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) I am not having the recommendations problem but my computer won't show me my notifications. I get the notice saying there are new notifications but when I click the circle the drop down menu won't show up. No problems on my phone though.

message 10427: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) So you haven't seen the movie I take it?

message 10428: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Nope. I loathe Tom Cruise almost as much as I loathe Jack Reacher.

message 10429: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) The closest I've come to reading a Jack Reacher novel is when it use to be my job to shelf new releases at Target.

Definitely! I got it on preorder in August 2014--U.S.

Slipping recommendations in my feed: I've had them for awhile and just ignore them.

Did anyone note the ones on the list were all advertised over and over ad nauseum to the right? So sure, more people read ad rated them. I bet the people who have this list are trying to see how effective their ads are.

message 10434: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments 'Wake up, Maggie, I think I've got something I want to say....' I saw the movie GOOD WILL HUNTING on TV Sunday night and loved it! I am late to the party about Robin Williams, but he and Matt Damon were excellent! I had never seen that movie before. Knowing that Robin Williams suffered mentally in life made his movie role so real! When he and Damon got caught up in a funny story and laughed themselves silly, the fact that I do not share Matt Damon's politics did not matter any more. I saw that same infectious laugh in SAVING PRIVATE RYAN when he told the story about the homely girl who fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch coming down.
About politics: Republicans have a good right to feel rather funky today! Maggie, go on back to sleep now.

message 10435: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) Next person who says "Remember, remember......" and tells me it's only from a move is going to get a history book thrown at them. Maybe I need more coffee.

I find the character annoying and irritating with no redeeming features whatsoever.

Interestingly, in New Zealand it wasn't "remember, remember" the rhyme went

Please do remember
The 5th of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot
We see no reason
That gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.

What the....

The old historical mystery is different to historical fiction issue raises its ugly head. Why can they not understand that Historical 'Fiction' is the genre and 'Mystery' (if the book is in an historical setting) is the sub genre.

I suppose maybe because they have included a mystery 'genre' that all mystery sub genres from other genre families all get lumped together there.

Allison | 1704 comments Completely passed by the Goodreads choice blah blah email GR sent me... but hello everyone! I moved over the weekend and just now got internet service back. Yay! I went way too long with out it... had to sneak in a few minutes (hours) at work :)

Margaret: Have you heard the news? Are you ok? Do you need Kleenex and chocolate sent to you? (her Benedict Cumberbatch announced his engagement)
