Terri | 19576 comments Gack! dealing with this again.
okay, last call...:)

Dear members
I'm not sure how many more times Derek is going to create profiles and keeping kicking this dead horse. I had to delete a comment from him in this thread just now.
Always the victim and those of us that he hurt are now the aggressors. Victim blaming.
Looks like this will go on and on.

I am sure some will believe his repentance. And I understand if you do. He talks a very good game. Its how he got us all sucked in in the first place with his cancer and fake death. Then sucked us in with his fake sister posts.

As for A&M members, lets put it into our past and bury it for good. What do you say?

My intention in bringing up that Derek was back was to make others aware that it is definitely true. Derek faked his death, and Derek was Molly.

So now that we know the truth, we can all move on and get back to all the other stuff that goes on around here. The positive stuff. The fun stuff. The enjoyable chats. The genuinely caring about each other. Because this is a group of very nice people that have many things in common...most notably, BOOKS!! :)

regards to all,
Terri

Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments Derek who? Forgot him already.
I left my house where it was 75 degrees and flew to Buffalo where it's 28 and snowing! I'm an idiot! 4 more weeks of football and then Bowl games. I see a dim but visible light at the end of the tunnel.

Caroline (caro7) Sorry to keep this Derek topic going, but just an FYI: Unfortunately, I had to change my settings to "PMs from friends only" because I received a taunting, aggressive PM from Derek this morning (which, not surprisingly, he deleted when he deleted his latest account, but not to worry, I got a screenshot of it). So if anyone else would like to see screenshots, maybe express interest here, and someone I sent them to can quietly PM you to pass them along.

Probably fell into the trap a LOT of media outlets do. They copy someone else's report once they see it's been printed in a lot of places. They assume it is legit without checking the facts for themselves.

Sloppy, lazy journalism at its worst, but it happens so damn often.

Terri | 19576 comments I can't turn off recommendations in my feed?? I looked at the arrow next to one of the recommendations, as advised. It came up with two choices. 'edit my favourite genres' and 'remove this recommendation' (or something to that effect. Clicking the latter only removes that book. Going through to the next page after clicking 'edit favourite genres', I unticked all the boxes and it wouldn't let me proceed unless one box was ticked.

How did others turn off those recommendations in their Updates feed?

message 10675: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Make sure you're in the Updates tab, and on the opposite side there should be that 'settings' icon, you know the one that looks like a gear. Click on that and there should be some options that come up, remove the check for recommendations.

message 10676: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments ohhhh, that icon. i thought people meant the one that is on the right hand side of the book that gets recommended in the update feed.

I think I have unclicked that one in the past and it reclicks itself when I clear cache. I'll be able to find out next time I log in to GR.

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments My goodreads format has been changed. E-mail is different. I was notified last night that some e-mail sent earlier in the day failed permanently. Is this the trouble Terri and some others have been having? Every system wants me to re-enter e-mail address and password, I do. They write back saying someone already has the email address and password. Duh? This is happening at Christmas while I am trying to shop on-line? What is going on? By now I have accumulated three accounts with goodreads net which are appearing without any request from me.. The last two people who made friend requests which I allowed are not anywhere to be found. Please, friends, bear with me. This must be fixed soon. Someone emailed me today which gave me an opportunity to use email. This attempt through you to reach the outside world is probably my last hope for today. I am not happy with up dated gmail. This message sounds like and is gobbledygook because I am writing as I think of things. Goodreads wants me to sign in using Facebook account. So everything I am writing should be plastered all over Facebook for the entire world to read. Well, let them read on. Everybody needs a good laugh NW and then. And on top of all that, the doctor called yesterday with results of bloodwork and my triglycerides are up to 200.

No, this is definitely not what was wrong with my internet use.

I have no idea whats going on at your end of things, Linda. Sounds like a whole jumble of issues.

If you are getting emails failing and you are using gmail, then it is possible that your gmail is playing up.
I would hate to think that your gmail has been hacked. I shouldn't even suggest it without understanding exactly what the issue is.

Not being able to use your password and email to get onto sites could mean you have a caching issue. It would be hard to diagnose any of your computer problems without seeing the issue first hand.
I can only advise that you speak to someone who is internet savvy. Like a son maybe?

message 10684: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Socket error is what gmail says. As for the different accounts on goodreads net, I have notified them several times lately about the three accounts: one is correct and two are not. I took my frustration out in random thoughts, which you know I have done before. It is the new format on goodreads that is giving me fits today. Moderators have stepped in to help me with problems (without my begging for the help) for which I am grateful!

I'm sorry but I had to bring this up again because I've been gone for around 12 days. WHAT????? Maybe I need to go back and read thru the threads. This really, really pisses me off because those 12 days were spent in the hospital having a C3 tumor removed from my throat. I'm home now but still have a tracheostomy tube and am starting my second round of chemo in about two weeks. Stuff like this DISGUSTS me! The 'Molly' person even wrote in her letter that "derek" knew I was a cancer survivor and how I knew all about the fight. Like you Terri, I also have someone that passed away around two years ago from an aggressive form of brain cancer...my friend Miche. What was going on with Derek brought it all up again in my head and then I didn't want to say anything about my own reoccurrence because I knew I would have a chance to fight it and Derek didn't. Sorry for rambling but I'm incredibly angry and sad right now at this deception. Going back to read the feeds I missed from the 5th of November on.

Terri | 19576 comments Boy, you did miss it all didn't you. It was an absolute disaster! Nothing he said was real. Nthing he's saying now about bipolar etc is likely real either, but he'll trap people with that story too no doubt.
I think we all need to forget this person existed.

The best thing to do with manipulators and attention seekers, is to ignore them and make them vanish.

I am so terribly sorry to hear of your own cancer trauma, Kimber. Bloody awful. I wish Derek's lies had not happened so that the caring people around here could have given support where it was really needed.
I hope the treatments and the operation were a successful will give you hope.
I'll send you a pm to touch base.

Terri | 19576 comments I want to say something to everyone who cares about this sort of thing...

In the past and in the years to come, it is a reality that some of us are going to get ill or have bad things happen to us. I wish it weren't so, but it is part of life isn't it.

We have always been a warm and caring bunch of people in here (and there will be more of these kinds of natures that we are yet to meet as newbies join in the years to come).

I hate to think that one rotten apple taking advantage of us means that we will be incapable or hesitant to give support to each other in times of need.

This thread is here for all of you so that you can speak openly about anything in your life, positive or negative. Breakups, boyfriends, girlfriends, wives, husbands, kids, health, happiness, sadness, bad movies, good movies.. whatever you want.
I for one will always be here for you to talk to. I will not let this bad experience taint my desire to care for others wellbeing and give support through thick and thin.

I would hope others share that ethos too. If you only want to read positive comments, then we have many, many other threads, so enjoy those. :) Or wait until the positive conversations are back and join in on those instead. Its all good. :)

If anybody needs to share a burden with people via this thread, to let us know what you are going through, do it.
I know that I got great amounts of support earlier this year when we were suffering bad drought here and all my cattle were dying. having that support helped me cope. There is no reason why that kind of support for others should disappear just because one silly little goose managed to catfish us.

I'd never let "Derek", "Molly" or anyone else ruin this group for me. I check this thread daily. You're all my peeps :)

message 10693: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Cool. :D

message 10694: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 728 comments Well said Terri, definitely group hugs, Margaret, even from us hobbits! Haha!

Me too Allie, this is the thread I go to first. It's because here is where everyone converges, chats about their life, and sometimes shares the greatest or saddest moments of their life. I'm made some nice friends here and I want to be able to share mine with them. I'll admit to being gunshy after what's happened, but can't let that stop me from caring. I would not have put myself out there for Derek if I was a different kind of person.

So in that vain, I hope all is well with you Kimber and that your operation was a success. And I hope you can share that with us regardless of what has happened.

:)

Funny to see this! Just this week in my library (Ashgrove) I tried to take a book out and it was blocked. Apparently it was still "out" on someone account. This had never happened to me before so I was fascinated.

I haven't stopped by here for a while, I have been on a long, long sci-fi binge. It seemed I missed a nasty troll while I was gone, though one of my FB historical groups just had a similar issue. What is with these people? So sorry to hear he has been making peoples life that little bit worse.

message 10696: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Trolls should stay under the bridge and never see the light of day. :)

I had similar library issues. But it is pretty common for me. Which sucks.
Reserved a fairly expensive book (non fiction) a month ago and the last person to have it has not returned it.

Bit of a low act to steal a book that is worth over $100 to buy (that's Australian dollars and is roughly the same in US dollars). Those are the kinds of books that people often can't afford to buy themselves.

message 10697: by Deb (new)

Deb Omnivorous Reader I guess I have just been really lucky with libraries in general the experience was completely new to me!

Regarding stealing from libraries... Ok, here comes one of my most shameful little secrets, my deep dark confession...

I once was really, really tempted to steal a library book. *pause for the audience to gasp*

It was a limited edition poetry collection illustrated by Arthur Boyde, I wanted it so badly and knew I would never be able to afford it. The St Kilda library was a trusting place back then, it would not have been hard to do but in the end I could not steal from a library. I just used to go in almost weekly to read it.

Sadly, my virtue had no happy ending; floods went through the library that year (Melbourn was a mess for ages) and when the library re-opened that book had been one of the ones destroyed.

message 10698: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Okay, since we're coming out in the open with book theft..I stole some books from the school library when I was about 9 or 10.
At first it was forgetting to take them back. After a while I got attached to them and didn't want to give them back.

*blush*
To this day I feel guilty. I was only a kid and it isn't something I would do now, but I still feel bad for it.
I always thought that I'd take them back one day. Surprise them. Clear my conscience. :)
But the government closed the school about 7 years ago.

message 10699: by Deb (new)

Deb Omnivorous Reader Yes Terri, I think that boat may have sailed.

Hm, I think I did steal a book when I was about 9. We were living overseas and I had been forbidden by the school to read in English, so of course I was desperate for English books.

I think I still have it.

What were the books you loved so much you could not part with them?
