Lauryn i think some people are just jealous of what Edward and Bells have!

Felicia I don't think people are jealous of what Edward and Bella have, because everyone knows that it's unrealistic(and stupid).
Then again, I don't think that's the reason people hate the book. I think it's become "cool" to hate the book, if you know what I mean. Like, if you wanna be cool, don't like this book. That's really stupid, because if you're really cool, you stand by what you like.
I have read the first three books, and I gotta admit that I'm not a fan, but if someone likes these books, then that's their own decision. Even though I don't like the books, I still get annoyed when people who haven't read the books say they hate them. How do they know when they haven't read them?
I just really have a problem with things being cool. Trying to be cool is lame.

Vanessa i think i liked the first book. i cant remember. i remember watching the movie with my college friends, and after that i lost it. i dont like Kristen's acting. [this is just me ok, Twilight fans dont react too much :)] and then there's the book 2 which for me is boring. but i still read the 3rd and 4th. and i dont like the ending. and im not jealous of what Edward and Bella have, lol. well, that's just me. :)

Meeeriams Fleep I have read all four books, and I admit, I slightly enjoyed reading them, while at the same time harbouring a growing distaste for the contents and the characters, etc, etc. I think people who HAVE read the book and hate it are genuine haters. There are those who hate it to be 'cool' but unless you hate it for a reason you cannot be a genuine hater, as it were.
I think people despise Twilight because of the unrealistic, shallow sense it gives. Stephanie Meyer seems to base all her ideas on love and romance on looks, sexual desire and glamour. Its all about physical attraction, things people dream about but when you get too much of it it just kind of falls a little thin. Besides which, i thought the plots were a little lame. Over dramatic. I especially hated the perfect ness of a vampire-human baby. That cut it for me, i thought, well why does everything have to be so perfect? Its annoying and stupid.

Insa Hussain I tell you why, I read the book and there are more than one mistakes in the book. I can't even believe that it got published! I've seen the movie, I liked the first two, I haven't seen Eclipse yet.

message 6: by Will (new) - rated it 1 star

Will IV Maybe because there is not one redeeming quality in Twilight.

Vanessa or is it also because the author made the vampires sparkle under the sun instead of getting burned to ashes? :)

message 8: by Will (new) - rated it 1 star

Will IV That part is silly, but didn't really have a factor in my distaste for the book.

Tyler I think it has something to do with the lack of substance in the series. There's no overarching theme that brings a message to the readers, Huckleberry Finn tackled racism, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe had Christian themes. The twilight series is nothing more than a pandering to the young adult readership, it feeds into the thought that "love conquers all" and that "the bad guys always lose". There's no serious literary merit in it, it was a book written to get famous, in my opinion. Stephanie Meyer wrote another book called The Host which I thought was a much better work, but the Twilight series bored me to death with it's repetitive storyline.

Plenty of women send love letters to serial killers in prisons across the world. It speaks volumes.

message 11: by Deb (new) - rated it 4 stars

Deb I think because so many people consider it just a young adult series. I myself love the books although I did think the first and last books were the best. Kristin Stewart isn't my favorite actress....I would have liked to have see someone else in the role.

Megan Never read them...i have the answer!!!
VAMPIRES AND WEREWOLVES SOUND STUPID!!!!

Sarah The biggest problem with Twilight is the weakness of Bella's character. She lacks self-reliance, she's dishonest, and she's a bad daughter. She puts her own desires and drives above the needs of the people around her. She's a terrible role model for teenage girls- I enjoyed the storyline, but the whole time I read it I cringed at Bella's lack of fortitude. Not until the last book does she become a worthy heroine.

I think they are written poorly. I enjoyed the first three, disliked the fourth. And I read the books before I was even critical of writing, so once I learned more about it, I realized that it wasn't worth my obsessing over.

Not to mention that it got extremely annoying once everyone started freaking out about it. (And I'm not someone who dislikes something just because it's popular. You're talking to a fan of Harry Potter, Fablehaven, Percy Jackson, Kelly Clarkson, The Office, Lord of the Rings, etc.) It's like one of those songs you hear on the radio that's good the first time around, but then the stations play it all day every day and you end up not liking it anymore.

Megan my FRIENDS opinion, not mine!!!!!!!

message 17: by Carol (new) - rated it 1 star

Carol I don't hate the books. I don't like them, but I don't hate them. The chief source of my annoyance is with the whole Twilight phenomenon, and with the fans. 40 year old women crushing on teenagers is just gross. This is especially true when they describe the stalker-riffic Edward as the "perfect man." It isn't the books themselves that provoke disgust, it's the people who wrap themselves up in them.

Liz Arcand I hate the books because I view "Bella" as the worst type of character for young, malleable women to be reading. She is the worst role-model for young girls. Any woman who attempts suicide to get he ex-boyfriend to pay attention to her should not be glorified. As a joke, my roommate and myself printed out a relationship quiz from Planned Parenthood entitled "Are you in an abusive relationship?" and answered it in the Bella's viewpoint...she was. Let me know if you wat to see it!!! Oh...and we totally passed it out at the movie, people loved it!

message 19: by Sable (new) - rated it 1 star

Sable Newest favorite vampire...Jerry from Fright Night. That guy is awesome!

It's not a hate but more of a dislike with me. I'm more of a horror fan, thus the vampires from Twilight suck to me. I prefer my vampires to be of the landshark type. Mainly the ones from 30 Days of Night.

I'm quite sure that there are others who were turned off by the Twilight vampires.

message 20: by X (new) - rated it 1 star

X Um, not so much, OP.

These two cardboard cutouts have a flat, uninteresting version of romance with all the depth of a cereal bowl.

I disliked the navel gazing, Mary Sue MC, endless repetition, and lack of anything freakin' happening for six hundred pages. There could be a drinking game created for every time Bella trips (the one flaw in the flattest character to ever be smashed between pages), Edward's perfect whatever is described ad nauseum, or some other boy magically follows Bella around like she injects pheromones.

I suffered through the first of these abominably written mental abortions, and returned the book wanting my wasted hour back.

At least it was a quick read?

Licha First book was not great, but enjoyable. Second book was soooo boring. I just couldn't finish it. I heard the third got much better, but by that point there was just too much hype that I just didn't really care. And I can't stand Kristin Stewart. She sealed the fate of this book for me because I figured I might give the books a chance once the hype died down. But if I read the books now, I will forever have her face in my mind as I read them and the thought of that is enough to turn me off from ever wanting to read them.

Nya Tomlinson-Horan-Malik-Payne-Styles the real answer to why people hate twilight is us. the fans. some of us are sooooooooooooooo crazy! i mean, i was kind of scared to read the books because i didnt want to turn into a crazy person. it really turns people away.

Sunny The Host was a by far better written book than Twilight. It was also more enjoyable. The Twilight series annoyed me and when it got super popular, I just disliked it even more. Stephanie Myer can write quality but this is what sells.

Deidre Yeah, you're right, everyone is jealous when they don't have an unbalanced, fatalistic and completely dependent relationship of their own to tear down their mental psyche. I know I am.

Nya Tomlinson-Horan-Malik-Payne-Styles who in their right mind would be jealous of a fictional character????? that is what i mean by fans scaring people away.

message 26: by Emlyn (new) - rated it 1 star

Emlyn I'm not a hater, I'm more of a.... Disliker, if you will. and it's because Edward is a creepy stalker who sparkles. I mean, seriously? SPARKLING VAMPIRES?!?!?!?!!!!!! Soooooo dumb. And a lot of the fans are kind of psychotic.

No need to shout. ;)

Interesting argument, but it doesn't really explain why people hate "twilight" specifically then.

brooke1994 Nya wrote: "who in their right mind would be jealous of a fictional character????? that is what i mean by fans scaring people away."

I know!

For The Love of Books I don't hate Twilight per se but I think there are two reasons why people do.

1. It's popular to hate Twilight

2. People get tired of the dramatic fandom associated with Twilight.

I saw the same things happen with Harry Potter when it was the new thing.

Personally, I dislike Twilight but not because of the reasons above. I simply didn't find the story enjoyable. I do, however, understand how so many people do. The story is easy to read, it appeals to everyone who has fantasies of "bad boy" romances, and there is something attractive about brooding supernatural beings. I wouldn't call Stephanie Meyer's writing fabulous literature but she did cater to a popular market and she did it very well.

So, it doesn't matter who hates it for whatever reasons they have, Meyer is holding her head high all the way to the bank and legions of fans appreciate the dream that turned into a saga. Haters can unite all they want, it really doesn't make any lick of difference.

This is my opinion! :-)

I definitely think Bella is the majority of the problem and I thought at times that Edward was sappy and could not understand why he was so obsessed with Bella except for the lure of her blood...which sounds like lust to me. For the most part, I liked Edward in the book, but I HATED the sparkling which just made him sound pretty instead of intriguing and dangerous.

I also think that like Harry Potter (anti-magic) and Pokemon (anti-violence) opponents, many people hate Twilight because it is a sensation and it is more fashionable to hate it than love it. I read Twilight before it was as huge a success and I enjoyed it and I am amazed at people who hate it and have never read it.

So of the people who hate Twilight and have read it...how many like vampire tales, how many like love stories, and how many like YA books? If you are not a fan of any of these, then how could you have expected to like it?!

I think why a lot of people prefer Harry Potter better is because they say it has better memories for them. Twilight is newer so some feel that the quality isn't that good, but I love the Saga.

I'm inclined to agree with you there. Harry Potter, to me, also involved a LOT more imagination on the author's part. I mean...Quiditch (I probably spelled that wrong) was a brilliant product of imagination even if the author had to borrow from conventional games to come up with it.

My personal dislike of Twilight wasn't so much because of the story but the characters. Bella, as a character, was almost more dark and brooding than her vampire boyfriend. She was depressing throughout the whole series and it made me a little crazy.

As an avid reader and lover of Anne Rice's vampires, I had an issue with sparkling vampires as well but I also believe that one cannot justify comparing the two stories at all. People who do so are grasping at reasons to hate Twilight. The two stories are not supposed to be similar; NO comparison!

Anyway, I digress! Harry Potter is another story that cannot be compared to Twilight but in order for me to play the devil's advocate, I do have to admit that I loved that series. My opinion may be biased though, because I love reading about wizards, witches, magyk, and so forth. For me, vampires have simply been overkilled but there is a large market for them so kudos to those who can still read about them and can still write about them. After all, one day the genre will fizzle out just like many others have before them. All it will take is popular replacement and the fandom will shift once again. :-)

Laurie: Almost Faemous Will wrote: "Maybe because there is not one redeeming quality in Twilight."

That would be why I hate the books and yep I did read them.

Raheem Bland writing that turns into purple prose when describing Edward, unlikable characters, indifference to the plot, etc. The list goes on. People have their reasons for hating the book; it's not that "it's popular so I'm going to be different and hate it" type of hate. Twilight just sucks.

Kristina Because it's trite crap. Don't get me wrong, it's enjoyable trite crap, but trite crap nonetheless.

Raheem Kristina wrote: "Because it's trite crap. Don't get me wrong, it's enjoyable trite crap, but trite crap nonetheless."

Aubrey i don't think that people really "hate" twilight nor are they jealous of it. i think that people just really disliked the movies for the most part. and if people say they hate the twilight books, then why read them? or why keep talking about them?

Samamtha clark i think it is a really tweeny book. And when get older you realize how possessive and controlling Edward is. I think that's why so many people dislike it. Bella is a very weak willed girl. Who lets all of her emotions be ruled by Edward. And if you think about all them being in school is a little creepy yes the have the bodies of teens, but their minds a mature i mean Emmet the youngest is around 50. i loved it when it first came out then as i got older i started, realizing how Bella and Edward's relationship was leaning towards emotional abuse.

message 44: by [deleted user] (new)

I think because its just so popular... i mean, obviously it has fans (like me) but because people have made a big deal about it, there are obvi people who are gonna be like "it sucks" because they probably think its mainstream to like it. Like my friend hasn't even read the books and he doesn't like it, yet he only hates it to annoy me because he knows how much i like the series.... otherwise, people have just read it and its not there cup of tea, and instead of saying "meh, no big deal" and never pck it up again, they have to get so opinionated about it to be added into a conversation..... I mean really, if you don't like it, that's fine, but don't make a freaking huge deal about how much you hate it.

message 47: by Amy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Amy Gideon I think that while the relationship between Bella and Edward draws some people in, it turns others off the series. While I was reading the series there were parts I enjoyed, but in real life Edward is a creeper. He breaks into her house, follows her around and tries to dictate who Bella's friends can be. In some ways he treats her more like a child rather than a partner. While it's okay as I'm reading the book, once finished and I mull over the relationship it's not so much romantic as disturbing.

I also hated the message that Meyers leaves you with about love at the end of the series. This idea that you only have one soulmate and that Bella never "really" loved Jake. It was just the baby. It was rather disappointing and a copout. She could have dealt with it in a mature way, but instead she took the easy route with it.

I think the last reason people don't like the series is it's so melodramatic. Though you could argue your teenage years are full of melodrama so she's staying true to form.

I personally liked the middle two best and while I don't hate the series there are aspects of it that I don't like.

I tend to agree. Although she spoke about wanting to save Charlie pain, she never really considered his feelings or respected his rules.

Angela Gwynneth wrote: "Sarah wrote: "The biggest problem with Twilight is the weakness of Bella's character. She lacks self-reliance, she's dishonest, and she's a bad daughter. She puts her own desires and drives above t..."

Well Sarah and Gwynneth basically i read them all and i see they used kristen stewart and the role she played in the movie to show how a vampire( robert Pattinson) can persuade people in so many ways and yet be a loner to some other people just like in the real world today a guy can go up to a girl and persuade her and in another world making the girl think he's so cool and then it hits her he's not who he says he is just like eddward not saying who he really was until she had to figure it out herself by her own observations showing that she had to watch what he did all the time and making her work thats what i think any thoughts

Superbunny I quote Stephen King:

“Harry Potter is all about confronting fears, finding inner strength, and doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend.”
― Stephen King

Enough sad.
