Then again, I don't think that's the reason people hate the book. I think it's become "cool" to hate the book, if you know what I mean. Like, if you wanna be cool, don't like this book. That's really stupid, because if you're really cool, you stand by what you like.
I have read the first three books, and I gotta admit that I'm not a fan, but if someone likes these books, then that's their own decision. Even though I don't like the books, I still get annoyed when people who haven't read the books say they hate them. How do they know when they haven't read them?
I just really have a problem with things being cool. Trying to be cool is lame.

I think people despise Twilight because of the unrealistic, shallow sense it gives. Stephanie Meyer seems to base all her ideas on love and romance on looks, sexual desire and glamour. Its all about physical attraction, things people dream about but when you get too much of it it just kind of falls a little thin. Besides which, i thought the plots were a little lame. Over dramatic. I especially hated the perfect ness of a vampire-human baby. That cut it for me, i thought, well why does everything have to be so perfect? Its annoying and stupid.

I think they are written poorly. I enjoyed the first three, disliked the fourth. And I read the books before I was even critical of writing, so once I learned more about it, I realized that it wasn't worth my obsessing over.
Not to mention that it got extremely annoying once everyone started freaking out about it. (And I'm not someone who dislikes something just because it's popular. You're talking to a fan of Harry Potter, Fablehaven, Percy Jackson, Kelly Clarkson, The Office, Lord of the Rings, etc.) It's like one of those songs you hear on the radio that's good the first time around, but then the stations play it all day every day and you end up not liking it anymore.

Are we really going to go there...again!

It's not a hate but more of a dislike with me. I'm more of a horror fan, thus the vampires from Twilight suck to me. I prefer my vampires to be of the landshark type. Mainly the ones from 30 Days of Night.
I'm quite sure that there are others who were turned off by the Twilight vampires.

These two cardboard cutouts have a flat, uninteresting version of romance with all the depth of a cereal bowl.
I disliked the navel gazing, Mary Sue MC, endless repetition, and lack of anything freakin' happening for six hundred pages. There could be a drinking game created for every time Bella trips (the one flaw in the flattest character to ever be smashed between pages), Edward's perfect whatever is described ad nauseum, or some other boy magically follows Bella around like she injects pheromones.
I suffered through the first of these abominably written mental abortions, and returned the book wanting my wasted hour back.
At least it was a quick read?

No need to shout. ;)
Interesting argument, but it doesn't really explain why people hate "twilight" specifically then.

I know!

1. It's popular to hate Twilight
2. People get tired of the dramatic fandom associated with Twilight.
I saw the same things happen with Harry Potter when it was the new thing.
Personally, I dislike Twilight but not because of the reasons above. I simply didn't find the story enjoyable. I do, however, understand how so many people do. The story is easy to read, it appeals to everyone who has fantasies of "bad boy" romances, and there is something attractive about brooding supernatural beings. I wouldn't call Stephanie Meyer's writing fabulous literature but she did cater to a popular market and she did it very well.
So, it doesn't matter who hates it for whatever reasons they have, Meyer is holding her head high all the way to the bank and legions of fans appreciate the dream that turned into a saga. Haters can unite all they want, it really doesn't make any lick of difference.
This is my opinion! :-)

I definitely think Bella is the majority of the problem and I thought at times that Edward was sappy and could not understand why he was so obsessed with Bella except for the lure of her blood...which sounds like lust to me. For the most part, I liked Edward in the book, but I HATED the sparkling which just made him sound pretty instead of intriguing and dangerous.
I also think that like Harry Potter (anti-magic) and Pokemon (anti-violence) opponents, many people hate Twilight because it is a sensation and it is more fashionable to hate it than love it. I read Twilight before it was as huge a success and I enjoyed it and I am amazed at people who hate it and have never read it.
So of the people who hate Twilight and have read it...how many like vampire tales, how many like love stories, and how many like YA books? If you are not a fan of any of these, then how could you have expected to like it?!

I think why a lot of people prefer Harry Potter better is because they say it has better memories for them. Twilight is newer so some feel that the quality isn't that good, but I love the Saga.

I'm inclined to agree with you there. Harry Potter, to me, also involved a LOT more imagination on the author's part. I mean...Quiditch (I probably spelled that wrong) was a brilliant product of imagination even if the author had to borrow from conventional games to come up with it.
My personal dislike of Twilight wasn't so much because of the story but the characters. Bella, as a character, was almost more dark and brooding than her vampire boyfriend. She was depressing throughout the whole series and it made me a little crazy.
As an avid reader and lover of Anne Rice's vampires, I had an issue with sparkling vampires as well but I also believe that one cannot justify comparing the two stories at all. People who do so are grasping at reasons to hate Twilight. The two stories are not supposed to be similar; NO comparison!
Anyway, I digress! Harry Potter is another story that cannot be compared to Twilight but in order for me to play the devil's advocate, I do have to admit that I loved that series. My opinion may be biased though, because I love reading about wizards, witches, magyk, and so forth. For me, vampires have simply been overkilled but there is a large market for them so kudos to those who can still read about them and can still write about them. After all, one day the genre will fizzle out just like many others have before them. All it will take is popular replacement and the fandom will shift once again. :-)

That would be why I hate the books and yep I did read them.

Yeah, it's one of those "So bad it's good" things.

Yeah, it's one of those "So bad it's good" things."
My thoughts exactly.

Same reason Rebecca Black became a Internet sensation or the Jersey Shore became popular, people love terrible things for some reason.

ugh... i hate both of those... and I'm not just saying that to be cool. haha

I hate it too, but you can't pull the average American away from them.

haha well i go to a very weird high school that consists of about 380 kids and no one likes Rebecca Black there :) i guess anything really is possible :D

I think because its just so popular... i mean, obviously it has fans (like me) but because people have made a big deal about it, there are obvi people who are gonna be like "it sucks" because they probably think its mainstream to like it. Like my friend hasn't even read the books and he doesn't like it, yet he only hates it to annoy me because he knows how much i like the series.... otherwise, people have just read it and its not there cup of tea, and instead of saying "meh, no big deal" and never pck it up again, they have to get so opinionated about it to be added into a conversation..... I mean really, if you don't like it, that's fine, but don't make a freaking huge deal about how much you hate it.
or they could just be dissing on the movies because of the crap acting, but have not experienced the awesome experience of the Books :D

agreed!

I also hated the message that Meyers leaves you with about love at the end of the series. This idea that you only have one soulmate and that Bella never "really" loved Jake. It was just the baby. It was rather disappointing and a copout. She could have dealt with it in a mature way, but instead she took the easy route with it.
I think the last reason people don't like the series is it's so melodramatic. Though you could argue your teenage years are full of melodrama so she's staying true to form.
I personally liked the middle two best and while I don't hate the series there are aspects of it that I don't like.

I tend to agree. Although she spoke about wanting to save Charlie pain, she never really considered his feelings or respected his rules.

Well Sarah and Gwynneth basically i read them all and i see they used kristen stewart and the role she played in the movie to show how a vampire( robert Pattinson) can persuade people in so many ways and yet be a loner to some other people just like in the real world today a guy can go up to a girl and persuade her and in another world making the girl think he's so cool and then it hits her he's not who he says he is just like eddward not saying who he really was until she had to figure it out herself by her own observations showing that she had to watch what he did all the time and making her work thats what i think any thoughts
