Myra | 406 comments Anyone watch Grimm? I didn't watch it last season but I really enjoy Once Upon a Time. Any similarity? Which do you like best?

message 352: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments I hated Grimm, dropped out after about 4 or 5 episodes. Not worth my time. It's a really really really weak Supernatural and has nothing in common with Once Upon A Time except genre. Once Upon A Time is a 10 while Grimm is a 2. If you're thinking of watching Grimm, do yourself a favor and watch Supernatural instead.

Robyn (roxy_nj) | 2775 comments I watched Grimm. You have to take it with a grain of salt and realize its not meant to be an awesome crime show (a lot of mistakes or holes if you are really looking at the police/legal work). Its also in its first season so the stories aren't real deep and generally stand alone although it did get much more interesting near the end of the season. Here is the link to the thread about Grimm.

Holli Lost‘s Hurley will guest-star during Season 2 of ABC’s fantastical series as a giant, TVLine has learned. Garcia right now is booked for just one episode.

Garcia’s casting comes as no great surprise, given Once co-creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz’s own Lost roots. Plus, as recently as July they shared their wish to find a place for the big lug on their canvas, just as they did with Emilie de Ravin (who played castaway Claire back in the day and now is a series regular as Belle).

Think maybe Garcia’s giant lords over a certain magical beanstalk? Whatever the case, he joins a colorful list of new characters set to pop up this season, including Captain Hook, Sleeping Beauty, Mulan, Sir Lancelot and … whomever Michael Raymond-James is playing.

Once, which was last season’s highest-rated freshman drama, opens its new season on Sunday, Sept. 30.

Holli PREVIOUSLY ON... | To save Henry from the poisoned apple turnover, Emma retrieved a last bit of "true love" potion from a cavern beneath Storybrooke, after defeating a dragon-ized Maleficent. Mr. Gold, though, pulled a fast one on Emma, pinching the potion for his own purpose: to restore magic to the town whose denizens now remember their true identities.

COMING UP NEXT | Now that Emma's a believer and everyone else knows what's what, what's next? "The show to us was never about breaking the curse and getting memories back. It was about larger conflicts, some of which were introduced last season and some which we'll introduce very soon." One epic clash, of course, involves Rumplestiltskin and the Evil Queen, who took her own pleasure in seeing that purple smoke sweep through town. "They have this weird thing where they keep f—king each other over, yet they still seem to need each other," notes Kitsis. Case in point: Rumple has reunited with his true love, "so whatever Regina was saving Belle for just went away. And I have a feeling Rumple is going to want revenge." And while fairytale characters such as Sleeping Beauty, Mulan and Captain Hook will join the narrative, Horowitz promises, "It's all in service of the larger story we've been telling, centered on Snow White, Charming, their daughter Emma and their relationship with the Queen and Rumplestiltskin."

TVLINE BONUS SPOILER | An unexplored part of Snow White's past apparently includes one memorable knight. "Lancelot (played by Teen Wolf's Sinqua Walls in at least three episodes) has a, uh, very 'complicated' relationship with Snow," Kitsis teases. "The two of them have a secret that I'm not sure Charming knows."

RETURN DATE | Sunday, Sept. 30 at 8/7c (ABC)

Holli Question: Any juicy new scoops on Once Upon a Time? The second season isn’t arriving fast enough! —Trippie Ausiello: As a power struggle ensues in the newly magically enriched Storybrooke, Episode 2 will flash back to when the Evil Queen first met Rumplestiltskin. Also, series cocreator Adam Horowitz told Matt Mitovich that the show got Sebastian Stan back as the Mad Hatter for no fewer than three of the early batch of episodes — “and he doesn’t just show up to say, ‘Hey, I’m still here.’ He has his own story, because his daughter is still out there.”

Holli Breaking news: Once Upon a Time ‘s Emma Swan is Alice in Wonderland — or at least she will feel like she is as Season 2 opens with the Storybrooke residents newly aware of their true identities, and just as Mr. Gold aka Rumplestiltskin has brought magic to town.

“The world is upside-down for Emma,” Jennifer Morrison shared on the red carpet at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, where Once was nominated for Visual Effects, Costumes and Prosthetic Make-up. “Not that she is Alice in Wonderland, but in a sense she [has] gone down the rabbit hole. Up is down, down is up, left is right…. Her whole world is shaken up, and she’s sort of a new being.”

Of course, many fans of the ABC series — which was last season’s highest-rated freshman drama — want to skim over such mind-benders and focus on the sure-to-be-awww-some reunion between Snow, the Prince and their long-lost daughter. But that family get-together, Morrison cautions with a laugh, is “complicated,” for a number of reasons. (As Once cocreator Adam Horowitz says in our Fall Preview Q&A, “After experiencing the initial joy of finding her parents, Emma struggles as she learns how to be parented.”)

Besides, Emma is still focused on the youngest member of the Charming clan, young Henry, whose life she saved in the season finale with a peck filled with love. With Regina outed as the Evil Queen and magic ostensibly within her grasp, “[Emma] has to find a way protect her son and her relationships with her family, and figure out how to move forward without being so [emotionally] guarded.”

Speaking of emotions: Somewhere amidst all the mayhem, might Emma in Season 2 find time for romance? Morrison “can’t say” if Jamie Dornan will or will not be back as the Huntsman/Sheriff Graham, but asserts, “There’s definitely romance coming” for the former bail bondswoman.

But is magic coming for her, as well as for everyone else? “It’s going to be a long process of discovery,” the actress hints. “In trying to keep everyone safe and trying to figure out what [magic returning] means for the world, you’re going to start to discover the sorts of things that she’s capable of — and she’s going to discover that, too.”

Once Upon a Time Season 2 premieres Sunday, Sept. 30

message 369: by Holli (new)

Holli Magic has come to Storybrooke — and ABC’s Once Upon a Time will conjure up even more fantastical drama as a result.

This Sunday at 8/7c, last year’s highest-rated new drama returns for Season 2, picking up right where it left off, with Mary Margaret, David et all fully aware of their remarkable identities, Emma a full-on believer and both Mr. Gold and Mayor Regina Mills – aka Rumplestiltskin and the Evil Queen — champing at the bit to use the restored magic to their advantage.

Series creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis gave TVLine a peek at the show’s wild, new reality and how it will affect everyone, from Emma and the reunited Charmings to Ruby, Belle and seven little guys.

TVLINE | Now that the residents of Storybrooke know their true identities, what will be the first question they have?
EDDY KITSIS | I think their very first question is going to be, “Why are we still here?” Everyone naturally would assume that when the curse is broken, they’d go back to where they were, and that’s not the case. And then it just becomes a free-for-all. All of the questions that you have, they probably have. What happens now? Can we leave the city? Who did this? Why did they do this?

TVLINE | So, everyone is fully cognizant of both their existences. Mary Margaret is now Snow White, but she can also teach grade-schoolers long division.
ADAM HOROWITZ | Exactly, which is to say that the 28 years of the curse remain as real to them as their prior lives in fairytale land. Hopefully that complicates things in an interesting way.

TVLINE | If Emma’s now a believer and the curse is lifted, what is your narrative engine for Season 2? What will power you through the first batch of episodes?

HOROWITZ | that’s an excellent question, and in many ways the premiere this year is a new pilot, which is to say we take this show that hopefully you enjoyed last season and spin it in a direction that is both familiar and new. The show to us was never about breaking the curse and getting memories back. It was about larger conflicts – some of which were introduced last season, and some of which we’ll introduce very soon. They will center on all of our major players from last year, and yet there are some new people coming aboard. It’s all in service of this larger story we’ve been telling, centered on Snow White, Charming, their daughter Emma and their relationship with the Queen and Rumplestiltskin.

TVLINE | Is anyone in Storybrooke itching to get back to fairytale land more than others?
HOROWITZ | The reactions kind of run the gamut. Everybody is very interested in what their new circumstance means, and they also are very concerned about what the presence of magic will mean for all of their lives.
KITSIS | The seven dwarfs are a perfect example. Leroy realizes he doesn’t just have to be the loser anymore; he had a purpose [as Grumpy], to be a part of the queen’s guard. He is one of the characters who is excited to reclaim who he once was and act on that.
HOROWITZ | We’ve also got some stuff with Ruby that we’re very excited to show the audience.
KITSIS | She’s another example of a character who now realizes what she once was, and how that will affect her in the way she behaves in Storybrooke will be a lot of fun. You will see a different Ruby this year.

TVLINE | As Rumple unleashed the purple smoke, we saw a hint of a smirk on Regina. With magic in play, what does that rivalry look like?
KITSIS | Those two have a very complicated relationship, one that we are excited to get into. In fact, Episode 2 is going to be about how Regina met Rumple. What’s interesting is they have this weird thing where they keep f–king each other over, and yet they still seem to need each other. But Rumple knows that Belle is alive, and that Regina [imprisoned] her — and Regina enters the season not knowing that he has that piece of information. So whatever she was saving Belle for just went away, and now I have a feeling Rumple is gong to want revenge.

TVLINE | What does Belle make of this situation she just stumbled into? She hasn’t really known Storybrooke.
KITSIS | This will probably be a strange land to her. She’s never seen a telephone before, she’s never seen a television…. And her inner nature is still one of goodness. Rumple has this large agenda and whatever it is, it required him bringing magic to this land. He has always been a character who has had to chose between love and power, and he’s always chosen power, so now that Belle, this wild card, comes into his life, into this meticulous plan, how will it affect it? And which path will he now choose because of it?

TVLINE | The storytelling has always had one foot sort of planted in “reality” – Emma bonding with the son she gave up for adoption, Mary Margaret and David’s tortured romance. What is the Season 2 equivalent?
KITSIS | It’s going to be, “How does the real-world conflict with fairytale land? — in the sense that people have two lives in their head, and there may be things about who they once were they no longer want to be. In a weird way, the curse-breaking allows everyone to reevaluate themselves.

TVLINE | What is Emma’s journey now?
HOROWITZ | After experiencing the initial joy of finding her parents, Emma struggles as she learns how to be parented. She’s also going to have to come to grips with what it means to be the savior post-curse. She’ll have to reconcile what she thought she knew about the people in her life with who they’ve become, and then navigate a world turned on its head.
KITSIS | We’re also excited to finally get a good look at some of Emma’s backstory before she had Henry. We may even see the origins of her beloved yellow bug.

TVLINE | Characters such as Sebastian Stan’s Jefferson are set to return for an episode or more. Are they there just for a head count, or do they serve a larger purpose?
HOROWITZ | We’re trying to give everybody a pivotal role in the larger story. So Jefferson doesn’t just show up to say, “Hey, I’m still here.” He’s got a part in this story.
KITSIS | And he has his own story. He’s got a daughter out there. Look, people like Sebastian we would love to have in every episode, but that is not possible because of their schedule. But he is in three episodes in the first batch, and we’re excited for those because they’re not just a “head count.”

TVLINE | Can you tease the circumstances under which we’ll meet one of the new characters?
KITSIS | Once of the new characters we’re going to be meeting is Lancelot (Teen Wolf‘s Sinqua Walls), who has a, uh, very…
HOROWITZ | … “complicated” relationship with Snow and Charming. We’re going to explore how that happened, and what it means for the past and for the future.
KITSIS | He and Snow have a secret that I’m not sure Charming knows.

TVLINE | Which existing character would will surprise us most this season?
KITSIS | I would say Regina. Last year, all we ever showed her was making the wrong decision. Her father said, “Once you go down the revenge path you’ll never go back,” and she did it anyway, and she killed her father. She was told the curse will create a hole in her heart that can’t be filled, and she says voids can always be filled. And yet in the finale, she is faced with saving her son Henry or saving the curse, and she chose Henry and lost everything. So what happens now to Regina? Will this be a second chance? Will she redeem herself? Or will she revert to being the Evil Queen? And now, by the way, she doesn’t have to keep lying — I’m the Evil Queen, that’s right. And this is how it goes. The audience will be surprised by how she handles all this.

TVLINE | In closing, any message to the show’s fans?
KITSIS | Please watch.
HOROWITZ | We want to say “thank you” for all the support that we got, and we hope you join us for Season 2. We really are aware we’re only coming back because you watched, and we really want to continue to try to raise the bar.

message 385: by Holli (new)

Holli Fantastic start to the new season! Loved it!!

message 386: by Holli (new)

Holli And just like that, with the spin of a hat, Once Upon a Time‘s Mayor Regina Mills aka the Evil Queen (accidentally!) dispatched the two thorns in her side to “oblivion.” Yet Henry has now charged Regina with bringing back his birth mom Emma and Mary Margaret/Snow White. Easier said than done?

During a visit to TVLine’s Times Square offices, Lana Parrilla previewed the obstacles standing in the way of Emma and Snow living happily ever after in Storybrooke again.

TVLINE | Coming out of the premiere, what range of emotions is Regina going through after Emma and Snow White fall through the portal?

There are mixed emotions. For one, she somewhat feels guilty, because that wasn’t her intention. Secondly, it’s almost kind of like a tiny, tiny celebration, because she’s been trying to get rid of these two women for so long! But how it happened… was not ideal. So it’s all a bit confusing for Regina because it’s something that is almost like a victory, and yet at the same time, there is a layer of guilt there. I think Regina is a really good person, at the core of her being, but circumstances changed her over the years.

TVLINE | As far as fixing the situation, is the fact that the hat is crushed a first roadblock?

Yes, for sure, because that was the only portal that they had in Storybrooke. Now that it’s destroyed, they don’t know how to get to this other world.

TVLINE | Can’t we just find Jefferson and have him make a new hat?

I think there is something special about this one hat. If we remember in Sebastian Stan’s [first] episode, Jefferson was making all these hats because he was trying to recreate that portal to get back. So there was something very special and unique about this one specific hat. Now they have to find another way to reach this other world, though I’m not quite sure how they’re going to do it.

TVLINE | We saw Regina come up empty the first time she went to use her magic and yet, after the portal sequence, she easily pinned David against the wall with the vines. What’s the difference there? Is it because Emma touched her? Is this Regina learning the lay of the new land?

That’s kind of left open for questioning… but I think it’s a combination of things. Rumpelstiltskin/Mr. Gold is able to use a bit of magic in Storybrooke, but it doesn’t work the same way for Regina. But Jennifer [Morrison] and I, when we were doing that scene, we did play that [activating the hat] had something to do with her touching Regina, but again, we have this perplexed look on our face like, ‘Who did that?’

TVLINE | Henry has charged Regina with getting back Emma and Mary Margaret, but will Rumple’s vendetta against Regina prove a distraction?

It’s interesting because as we move forward, there isn’t a lot of full-on confrontation, like really getting down to it and saying, “Why did you send the wraith after me? What is this about?” And he doesn’t directly approach her about Belle. So the way I see it, there is so much that is unspoken between these two characters. In the second episode, Regina goes to talk to Mr. Gold — she needs something from him – but she never mentions the wraith. There is no dialogue about it. To me that indicates that either these two can never really kill each other and these are just threats, or they don’t talk about it because they’re just always going to try to trump one another.

TVLINE | Now that everyone in Storybrooke knows who they really are, we see that Ginny [Goodwin] has brought a bit of a regal air to her performance, Josh [Dallas] has a bit more swag. But since Regina has always known who she is, what subtle notes do you as an actress get to put in there?

Regina has always been very good at lying. She wears a mask. She plays a part. And now I don’t think she can anymore. So, you’re going to experience a much more vulnerable, exposed Regina. She starts to become very honest about who she is and the things that she’s afraid of and what she wants. She starts to confront herself and her inner demons in ways I don’t think she ever has.

TVLINE | How soon do we get to see you in Evil Queen regalia again?

I’m hoping very soon. I do miss it. There are some flashbacks, but what we [thus far] flash back to is young Regina. That’s juxtaposed with the Regina in Storybrooke because in Fairytale Land she’s starting to be come this evil queen, while in Storybrooke she’s softening. I love that contrast. That’s what these writers are so great at.

TVLINE | Have you had a chance to play anything remotely resembling a warm-ish moment with Regina and Henry yet?
Yes.

TVLINE | Can you tease what brings that about?

Nope!

TVLINE | Which of Season 2′s new characters do you get to interact with the most?

None. I have yet to act with any of them…. The portal has a lot to do with that.

TVLINE | I was a bit surprised by the fact that everybody in town doesn’t know who Dr. Whale is….

Yeah, David is like, “Who are you?” and they get very confrontational over it. There’s a reason for that. A lot of the fans are guessing, and that’s exactly what we want them to do. There are, I think, one or two characters that know who he is.

TVLINE | I have to think that there will be some new and/or surprising allies for Regina in Storybrooke this season. It can’t just be her against everybody.

There is one, and it is a fairytale character that we do know. So, you’ll have to keep watching!

Timothy (jeditimothy) | 599 comments Well if cora is back she may need the book of magic. Now who thinks rumpel is the one who gave cora the book in the first place?

Kelley (kheckart) | 456 comments Rumpel is a sneaky one. It seems like he just likes to make trouble so he probably did give her the book just like he gave it to Regina.

message 391: by Jackie (last edited Oct 08, 2012 05:16PM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments Whether Regina needs the book later against her mother is irrelevant, she doesn't know her mother is in FairyTaleLand now. She kept the book for her own purposes, she is not giving up magic, it's the only advantage she has. What she did with Henry was complete manipulation, Henry wants to believe she's changed and she'll use that to her advantage also. She's despicable.

message 399: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4961 comments Oh that is even better! It would be perfect, with the Mila connection. The Hook story was so different than what I thought we'd get, better than I could have hoped for.

Red would look good in rags. She's a beautiful girl.

I was pleased that Rumple bared his heart to Belle, but I'm still not sure if it's just to manipulate her into staying with him or if he's embracing honesty in their relationship. I'm hoping for the latter but I have a hard time trusting him.
