Dave Russell I just watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall. It was funny. Burn After Reading was not.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Burn After Reading was distasteful to me. Maybe if it had more of the CIA scenes, I would have liked it. But I didn't care for most of the characters, and the ones I did like got killed in gruesome ways, which I found very jarring and NOT FUNNY.

message 453: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell I agree Jackie. I kept waiting for something to happen, and then something happened (after about an hour) and it left a really bad taste in my mouth, and then nothing else much happened. The only funny part was when Brad Pitt got punched, but that was in the trailer.

message 454: by Lori (new)

Lori Heh, I just watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall too. Well I should say Richard was watching it and I got sucked in - it wasn't bad at all!

message 455: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments I want to punch Brad Pitt... in real life.

message 456: by trivialchemy (new)

trivialchemy I once had someone ask why McCarthy didn't use "normal" punctuation, and he followed that statement with "I wanted to attack the book with a red pen."

That's the only time in my life I almost punched someone over a book.

Bahaha, Thanks for that, RA. And let the record show that if you ever get into a legitimate altercation in defense of Cormac McCarthy... I got your back, man.

message 457: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell Whole lotta punching going on.

message 458: by trivialchemy (new)

trivialchemy You got a problem wit' it? You want we should maybe take this outside?

message 459: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell Reckon not

message 460: by trivialchemy (new)

trivialchemy Shucks. Let me buy you a beer, pardner.

message 461: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell Reckon

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Heh. Thanks, Isaiah. I'll buy. Drinks for all my friends!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I just saw Monsters V. Aliens, and enjoyed it very much. I ended up without intending to going to the IMAX version, and it was really cool to see it with the 3-D glasses on the big screen.

Here's my review from Facebook -

Very fun mash-up of Attack of the 50-Foot Woman, Mars Attacks, and Monsters, Inc., and more than a touch of Dr. Strangelove, with Reese Witherspoon playing the empowered (in more than one sense) heroine.
I loved the mismatched band of monsters/heroes, especially the roach mad scientist (voiced by Hugh Laurie), and the blue blob (voiced by Seth Rogen), and most especially the giant fluffy beetle, Insectosaurus.

The animation was almost too good, at times. It's weird when it looks too real, I think. What do you guys think?

If you go, be sure to stay through the first part of the credits, because there's just a little bit more...

message 464: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Great review, Jackie. Thanks.

message 465: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I want to see that movie, but I'll probably wait for the video release. I imagine it's better on the big screen, like Jacks said, but I'm ok with that...

My kids watched Hotel for Dogs last night. Don Cheadle is in it! I had no idea. The boys liked the movie, I guess. I was kind of half paying attention, so I can't comment.

message 466: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Burn After Reading was the first movie I returned halfway through in quite a while. Couldn't get into it.

I loved Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I thought it was absolutely hilarious.

RA - I thought The Road was magnificent, but I think if I had kids putting it down would be the wiser thing to do.

message 467: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Yes, I thought Forgetting Sarah Marshall was pretty good, too...

I really, really want to see that Anvil movie...

message 468: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Blockbuster is $8? Wow. I do Netflix, the 1 at a time plan, which is not extremely cost effective, but also gives access to the "play now" movies so it works out ok.

We do have a lot of DVDs, thanks to the following math:
2 movie tickets: $20ish
Add popcorn or a soda (I can abstain, but Zu considers it part of the experience, which is reasonable) and you're talking $25 or $30

OR buy 4 previously viewed films from Blockbuster for $20. Four times the viewing pleasure, and cheaper, healthier snacks.

Hence, the quadrupling of our DVD collection.

message 469: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Our Blockbuster is five bucks for five days, plus five extra days as a "grace period."

We use Netlix one at a time too! And our local library stocks tons of cool new movies - usually new releases get there before one comes available on Netflix.

message 471: by Heidi (last edited May 05, 2009 02:28PM) (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments My local library - a 2 week borrow, up to 5 movies at a time... and best of all: FREE (outside of taxes)!! :)

They typically have whatever I want. I just have to request it online and they'll hold it for me. The shelves usually look picked over.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Rant warning: I hate the DVD format! Stupid fragile discs with their playing surfaces exposed. Hey, let's let the kids figure out how to get them out of the clamshell boxes without cracking them. That'll be fun!
Next, let's drop them on the gritty floor and step on them a few times before we take them back to the library.
Aargh!

Side note: Did you know that a VHS tape can last 100-150 plays, and still work?

message 473: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I agree, Jackie, about DVDs. I hate when they freeze up in the middle, or jump past a whole scene, or worse yet, go back to the beginning. When I get a Netflix disk I always wipe it with a windexed paper towel before playing, which seems to reduce the number of problems.

message 474: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Yeah, I guess I never thought about it that way, Jacks, but I bet DVDs are a massive pain in the ass for librarians...

message 475: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I think libraries aught to require a credit card deposit for DVDs that would ensure people would be careful with them. But then again I guess that is beside the point.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Downloadable/streaming movies is coming. Actually, it's already here, just not at the library so much.

message 477: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) That's the ticket, Jackie.

message 478: by Heidi (last edited May 05, 2009 02:59PM) (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I promise I'm good to the discs I borrow, Jackie! I kinda have to be... the librarians at my library all know me by name/face. Several have even asked for my opinions on movies "because you seem to have good taste in movies" (which weirded me out to hear because it implied that they're talking about my movie list with each other).

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Oops! That's a librarian faux pas, to notice what someone is checking out, Heidi. Unless they helped you choose what to get to start with?

message 480: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Jackie -
Do you actively work at not noticing, or is the faux pas in mentioning it?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments More the not discussed side, I guess, Sarah. But when you check out folks' books, library staff should use discretion. No comments on medical books, for example.

I would chat with the kids about the fiction books they were checking out when I was helping them, especially the ones I'd read too, but what a patron checks out is supposed to be confidential.

message 482: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) what a patron checks out is supposed to be confidential.

Except, of course, in cases that are vital to NATIONAL SECURITY.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Jackie "the Librarian" wrote: "Oops! That's a librarian faux pas, to notice what someone is checking out, Heidi. Unless they helped you choose what to get to start with? "

Well, if I didn't like all of them, I'd be concerned about a breach of privacy. I do like all of them, though... and, yes, we exchange ideas on occasion. It's just, well... that was an eye-opener for me.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Jackie "the Librarian" wrote: "Oops! That's a librarian faux pas, to notice what someone is checking out, Heidi. Unless they helped you choose what to get to start with? "

I find this fascinating...some librarians, the ones I know pretty well, seem more comfortable saying "I saw this!" or the like when I'm checking out a movie.

I'd have to train myself to be a good librarian. I'd want to ask questions such as "why are you checking this out?", not out of judgment (most of the time:) but more out of curiosity.

message 485: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments I've been using Redbox a lot--it's awesome, pick up the movie on Friday on my way home, watch it that night and drop it off Saturday while we're out and about.
If I don't get it from there, I'd rather buy it used--same price as renting from Blockbuster plus a couple of bucks, if we love it we keep it, if we don't we trade it at e-trade, a store here that trades dvds, cds, and games.

message 486: by RandomAnthony (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Nah. Eagle Eye.

(Although, I thought the same thing, Sally, when I'd seen the DVD jacket on display the first several times I passed it.)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Someone really went to town on the "goofs" page of Eagle Eye. I love reading the goofs. It makes revising my paper move to the back, the far far back recesses of my psyche.

For instance, Revealing mistakes: At the funeral of Ethan Shaw, in the close-up shot of Ethan's face, his eyelids are clearly flickering.

What movie "funeral" doesn't have an actor laying there, trying his best not to flicker his eyelashes?

Haven't seen Eagle Eye, but you should enjoy the other two.

Sweeter tells me we watched that recently. I cannot remember it. I tend to block out Steve Carell. That must be it.

message 498: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments Get Smart had a few funny scenes, emphasis on the word few. My favorite was the dance scene. That was good.

I want to see Defiance again while it's still at the dollar theater. Did you guys see that?

I'm right there with you on Steve, but on the other hand Anne Hathaway was in it.
