Oh, good they kept the pirate sub-plot out! I wasn't sure how they could film that and make it look good. It would be confusing if you hadn't read the book. I hope to see it tonight.

They released an animated DVD version of the pirate comic sub-plot if you're interested. You see the preview for it when you see the movie. I liked Watchmen, too. I've read some reviews panning the sex scene between Night Owl and Silk-Spectre as silly and laughable, but I didn't see it that way.
The NYT reviewer was annoyed that the scene was set to Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah"--suggesting that using that song for a sex scene is old hat, but I'd never seen it done before.
Watching Vicki Cristina Barcelona with the in-laws was a very ... er, interesting experience.
But good. I'm not so much on the Woody Allen films, but I <3 Scarlett Johanssen.

I didn't like the use of "Hallelujah" for the sex scene at all. I thought most of the music choices -- with the notable exceptions of "The Times They Are A-Changin" and "Unforgettable" were a little cliched. I'm glad I've read it enough to know when to close my eyes.
I thought on the whole it was ok; I don't love the ending they came up with, but I understand why they did it.
I loved Rorshach's mask, and the guy who played him. The Comedian was fine, as was Dr. Manhattan. Didn't think much of Laurie or of the David-Spade-ish Ozymandias...
My two friends I saw it with had not read the book, but I had explained the conceit behind it to one and not the other. The one who went in blind -- expecting a superhero movie -- was disappointed and said she couldn't' identify with any characters; the one who went in expecting a superheroes are flawed-humans story understood and enjoyed it.
And dude, there were little kids in there! Who brings their kids to a movie like that?
I thought on the whole it was ok; I don't love the ending they came up with, but I understand why they did it. What do you mean? It ends the same way the book does. Or am I missing something?
Kids in R-rated movies--RRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!! Makes me mad!I saw Revolutionary Road tonight. Flashback City. Now I feel like crap. Wish we would have gone to Slumdog Millionaires. And saw a preview for something called 2012. I hate movies about the end of the world--hate them so much that I also hate previews of movies about the end of the world.
Just in a bad mood right now. Thinking about watching the dvd Night in the Museum to try and get out of the bad mood. Maybe.
I just watched Mr. Brooks starring Kevin Costner. It's just awful. There's just way too much going on and none of it is the least bit believable. I was thinking about halfway through that this has got to be the worst serial killer movie ever made, which got me to thinking what the best one is. Here's what I came up with:Psycho
Badlands
Manhunter
I watched Taken last night and it was pretty fickin sweet. The fight scenes were so satisfactory that I caught myself going "Ohhhh" and "Ahhh", which I don't usually do. The story line was pretty good also, which usually doesn't happen in most action movies. The ex-wife though, she needed to stop talking though. It almost ruined the movie for me, almost.
People talk in movies so much. Another pet peeve. Last night we moved because this couple directly behind us was talking the whole first 10 minutes of the movie and probably the rest too, we weren't there to hear it, though. Probably never even wondered why we moved.
Watching Vicki Cristina Barcelona with the in-laws was a very ... er, interesting experience. Oh, I didn't even think of that...ha...watching two women kissing with the in-laws...ha...
I could see some parents who don't pay attention to the media thinking that The Watchmen was another kid-oriented comic movie.
That Crash thing, though...that would piss me off too, Sarah...listen, I know parents want to get out of their house with the kid, but I hate when they ruin an adult experience for everyone by taking a crying kid into an environment where a kid shouldn't be. I like it when places like movies and the symphony have a "no kids under six" rule.
I just watched Mr. Brooks starring Kevin Costner. It's just awful. I work under the assumption, sir, that "Kevin Costner" and "awful" go together naturally.
Costner's made some bad choices lately, but he gave two of the best performances of the 90's: Butch Haynes in A Perfect World and Jim Garrison in JFK and actually his performance in Mr. Brooks was the only good thing in that movie.
Costner can be okay if he stays within his acting range. I liked him in The Upside of Anger, where he was an ex-jock DJ who lived near the angry Joan Allen's house. He didn't have to do much except listen and be supportive, and get out of Joan's way.
IMDB says:Flashback scenes with Kevin Costner as Alex were filmed, but cut. He is still visible as the body being dressed at the beginning of the film.
I had clean forgotten that, Jackie.
Dances with Wolves was good. And I still remember the terrible review it got on NPR. Why do I still remember this? That I don't know, but I think it did clue me in on how wrong reviewers can really be.
Thumbs up. I still liked it. I think I have to see Casino Royale, though, as Quantum of Solace seemed to serve as a sequel.
we watched Quantum Of Solace saturday night. eeeehhh. i couldn't get into it like i did Casino Royale. he is def a new bond and makes dirty harry seem like larry the cable guy but this one just didn't really have the moments. i half read a book in my chair peeking over and listening and couldn't really get into either. hey wait, maybe i have mono or something...
So I just watched Twilight. You know, I thought it was pretty good, but I imagine people who read the book might have stronger opinions either way. There were parts (I don't want to reveal too much here...spoiler thing) that could have been developed more, and I felt the film was setting up for the sequel through much of the last thirty minutes, but I wasn't bored and didn't think the film played like a teenage romance at all. Kristen Stewart was perfect in her role. And yes, I noticed Stephanie Meyer's cameo:)
I have just watched the ENTIRE Sound Of Music movie along with 3-4 hours of special features. (julie andrews was HOT)
We watched Synecdoche, New York last night. It is a long one, and it took a while for me to really get into it (Charlie Kaufman is an insane genius) but the last 20 minutes were pure visual poetry. Like Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine this movie twists around the notions of reality and existence in such a beautiful way.
I watched Slumdog Millionaire today. Parts were very, very hard to watch, as I have three kids and would hate to see them go through what those kids experienced, but I thought the acting and directing were decent. The storyline...ok. Not brilliant. Ok. I think the film won the Oscar for it's "feel good" nature.I often don't have the patience for that Kaufman guy.
I'm tempted to check out Observe and Report but I'd have to pay 9.50 tonight and I'm too cheap.
I adored Slumdog, but I'd have Danny Boyle's babies if given the opportunity.
Have you seen Waltz with Bashmir yet, RA?

I need to rent Synecdoche. We saw Adventureland this past weekend - very cute, and great soundtrack (Replacements, Bowie, Lou Reed...score by Yo La Tengo).
No. I live in semi-rural Wisconsin. The DVD doesn't come out until June.Did Boyle do Trainspotting? I liked that a lot.
He did Trainspotting, and Shallow Grave, and Sunshine, which was an awesome little science fiction flick.
That looks great, although I don't recall if I saw/liked Superbad. The boy who stars in this looks adorable, though. Wasn't he George Michael Michael on Arrested Development?
Yes, Michael Cera...he was in Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and Juno, too. He pretty much plays the same character in all of them, but he plays that character well.
I didn't like Superbad all that much...Michael Cera isn't in this one, though I think he's great. The boy in Adventureland is from the Squid and the Whale, but he's perfect in this - smart and sweet. The girl is from Twilight, and the buddy is one of the geeks from the excellent Freaks & Geeks.
I think character actors can be very talented, especially the ones that disappear into their characters. They just don't tend to have the movie star looks to be leads. Which means you get great looking lead actors like Keanu Reeves and Tom Cruise, who really aren't the best actors.
Chris Cooper is a character actor. He played the repressed gay military dad in American Beauty, the toothless orchid thief in Adaptation, and the head of the spy group in Bourne Identity, and was completely different in each role.
I never took notice of Chris Cooper until I saw him in Breach. He was absolutely astounding in his role as an evangelical CIA agent selling secrets to the Soviets. I was floored.
Yeah, I think character actors are the one that can play different characters...seamlessly...they're the kind who you say "I know that guy from somewhere..." but you often don't remember his/her name...Chris Cooper is a great example.
