RandomAnthony | 14536 comments What did you think of sitting in the second row? How's your neck feel today?

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
It made me a wee dizzy. Sometimes white areas were all flickery, which I was worried would cause a migraine. It was ok, though, as it is a relatively calm movie. I couldn't of endured it for any sort of explosion/racing/gunfire flick.

message 253: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Yeah, "wee dizzy" makes sense. I haven't sat in the first twenty rows of a theater in years. I always go straight to the top, and I try not to go when it's crowded. You're a better person than me, Sallers.

And we were early! Damn small town on a Saturday night.

I usually avoid the large, corporate theater, especially on a weekend. But we were really excited to see this, and to get out of the house.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Sally, I just saw Gran Torino today, and it was really good. Some of the dialog reminded me of the review threads we get on GoodReads, the ones where the guys start talking trash to each other.

message 256: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments I saw The Curious Case of Benjamin Button last night-it was so good! It totally blew me away!! I was laughing and crying but most of the time sitting and not daring to blink and after it was over, I just sat there. I wanted to bask in the glow of the dark screen and not let the moment end. This is one of the very best movies I have ever seen!!
I kept wondering if they were gonna cop out and end the movie when Brad Pitt was still Brad Pitt. I think that would have been a huge cop out amd disappointment. But they took it to the end, they went all the way. It was an amazing experience! I felt like I didn't watch the movie, I experienced it!
Gran Torino was sold out last night. I saw the preview, it looks really good! I can't wait to see Defiance--that looks so good!

Sweeter and I watched Zodiac this evening. Great stuff! Reminds me of the first time I ever saw The Usual Suspects, just like with that we started it again right after.

Jackie, the barber! Holy funny stuff.

message 258: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments The ending of Usual Suspects was my fav surprise ending of a movie ever. Even more than 6th Sense

My youngest son (17) took a date to see the Benjamin Button movie on Saturday. When he got home I asked "Didya hold her hand?" and he replied "That was not really a hand holding movie." But he liked it so it must be hitting different demographics

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Well, I saw Let the Right One In this weekend, and it was AWESOME!!!!! If any of you have an opportunity to see it in a theatre, I highly recommend it!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1139797/

And I'm so thrilled that Mobile has an indie theatre now I might start crying just thinking about it. I know now what I'll be doing at least one night of every weekend!

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Sally, I LOVED Zodiac! Fincher said he wanted to make the scenes of the murders picturesque and fairytale-like to add to the creepy factor. It worked. The scene by the lake makes me tremble (from fear/anxiety, not excitement) every time I see it.

The Usual Suspects never gets old for me.

message 261: by [deleted user] (new)

I hate that I can't see Let the Right One In where I live. Indie/foreign cinema here is erratic.

Sigh...I'll just have to wait until it comes out on DVD.

message 262: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Hey, I'm still wondering if I dreamed it all that I got to see it in MOBILE, ALABAMA!

message 263: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I've never even heard of that!

message 264: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Oh, foreign horror. No wonder. Our one indie theater is still so new that it only plays things that the fancy-schmancy above 45 set can go to and feel good about themselves with their 7 dollar beer.

message 265: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Our indie theatre is either owned by a gay man, or he is very gender-enlightened, b/c almost everything we've had so far has had at least a sub-theme of questioning gender or sexuality norms. It's AWESOME! He said they're gonna try to get Milk if after the Oscar nominations are announced no mainstream theatre in Mobile brings it here.

message 266: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
is Milk not there now?

message 267: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Garbage does Milk like no other. It gets stuck in your head. :)

message 268: by [deleted user] (new)

"I'm waiting I'm waiting for yooooooooou!

Man, I love that song.

message 269: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments is Milk not there now?

Oh, NOOOOO. There will be no big ole gay movies in Mobile unless there is a WHOLE lot of Oscar hoopla about it. (That's what happened with Brokeback Mountain.) That's why the Crescent Theatre's owner is waiting for Oscar nominations to be announced... What's the buzz about Milk? Is it just that Sean Penn is gonna be nominated or are there other possibilities? 'Cause if it's nominated for Best Picture, then the possibilities of it coming to one of the big theatres here is a lot better, but if it's just for that one performance, probably not so much.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Man, GR is mentoring up BIG TIME, Mindy.

I'm happy to share with all of you that one of the theatres in Little Rock is showing Let the Right One In, as well as a few other gems. Yay us! Mindy, I saw the trailer for that movie a while back and was v. intrigued. I had forgotten about it until you posted mention in this thread.

message 271: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I have NO CLUE about what's playing in the movie theatres right now (other than what I just tracked down at Market Street Theatre - but that doesn't count because those are typically indie films). I'm so out of it. It's one of the disadvantages of not watching television at home. I'd argue that the benefits outweigh the disadvantages, though.

message 272: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments DAMN!!!! I didn't think that comment posted AT ALL b/c GR just stopped loading altogether! Sorry y'all!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I saw Zodiac too, and really liked it. I loved the focus on the investigation, it reminded me of The Thin Blue Line that way.
And yet, still plenty creepy, especially the scene in the hardware store at the end.

message 274: by Cyril (new)

Cyril Robert Downey, Jr. as Sherlock Holmes - sounds interesting but I also fear a disaster.

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
What is up with Robert Downney Jr. in everything this year? He is to 2008/9 as Jude Law was to 2005/6.

Remember Chris Rock's hilarious speech that year at the Oscars? Something like "...and if you can't get Jude Law hire Colin Firth..." but it wasn't Colin Firth. It was someone Sean Peen felt determined to come out and defend. "I know who _________ is. He is one of the finest living actors today."

I just booed. Seen Peen is such a Debbie Downer. That cemented my dislike of him. Stop taking everything so seriously, dude.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Did you see that Robert Downey, Jr. was nominated for his role as Sgt. Lincoln Osiris in Tropic Thunder?
I love his response to the nomination:

"It's about time narcissistic, accolade-seeking idiotic actors were formally recognized," Downey deadpans about his nomination, speaking from the Brooklyn, N.Y., set of "Sherlock Holmes." "It's been a long, hard road for us."

Sally, you're right, there HAS been a lot of Downey movies lately! Gee, somehow I don't mind...

That is hilarious, Jackie. Where did you find that? I want to put it on my facebook.

Thanks Jackie-O!

message 280: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments Did anyone see Robert Downey Jr in the movie Fur? That is an interesting movie--very compelling. It's an "imaginary biography" of Diane Arbus. He plays a man with the disease that makes your whole body be covered in fur, and it is about the relationship between the two of them. He did a great job, and Nicole Kidman played Diane, she was really good too.

message 281: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments I saw Tropic Thunder last night, and laughed A LOT.

message 282: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments I also saw We Own the Night and tried not to fall asleep. A LOT.

message 283: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I saw The Kite Runner last night. Very well done, I thought. Having read the book, I, of course, noticed all of the stuff they left out.

message 284: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Funny, I handled the book just fine, but I'm not sure I'd be able to handle the visuals of the Afghanistan stuff. Isn't that strange, the difference b/w seeing something just in your head and seeing it on film? Anyone else have that experience?

message 285: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Yes, I agree. Some of it, the landscape where they were doing the kite flying, and the narrator's modern life, was nice to see on the screen. But some of the images I'd done a fine job visualizing on my own, and did NOT need somebody else's assistance picturing. I'm thinking especially the rape scene.

message 286: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments I want to see Kite Runner, but decided against it because I knew I would have trouble with the rape scene. I'm a lot more careful than I used to be about what movies I watch. The same with The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. It's not worth feeling depressed for days to go see a movie I want to see and that's what happens sometimes.

Last weekend Sweeter and I watched Hard Candy and I'll Sleep When I'm Dead. Both tested the limits of what I'll endure in the name of cinema.

message 288: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Hard Candy was tough, but I really liked it.

I saw The Assassination of Jesse James today, and I loved it. It was visually stunning. And the acting was wonderful. How come I didn't hear more about this movie? Beautifully shot.

message 289: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I've heard great stuff about The Assassination of Jesse James -- I have it on my Tivo to watch at some point.

I watched Lions for Lambs last night, which was better than I expected, possibly because the reviews had utterly panned it. I thought it said some interesting things about personal responsibility and courage.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I saw The Human Stain last night.

Wow. I didn't see the outcome of that movie coming. Great performances from a superb ensemble - Gary Sinise, Anthony Hopkins, Nicole Kidman, Ed Harris, Wentworth Miller, Jacinda Barrett. Excellent scriptwriting/dialogue/editing.

message 291: by Meen (last edited Jan 26, 2009 09:07AM) (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments I liked Lions for Lambs and The Human Stain. I was surprised by Lions, too, Sarah, but mostly because I don't like Tom Cruise... He's been impressing me more lately, though, and I think I'm gonna have to stop saying I don't like him. (Which really pisses me off b/c I really don't like him.) And Heidi, I think I sensed the outcome in The Human Stain, but it was still highly effective. Of course, I hadn't read the book, and given all the hoopla over Philip Roth among my GR fellows, I'm not sure I would be able to read him without bias. Funny, GR has kind of screwed with my reading experience. It's like I'm doing it for an audience now...

message 292: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I just watched Vicky Christina Barcelona. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and I loved the music in particular. I downloaded the music while watching the film and I'm going to put it on my mp3 player and listen right now.

Ooooh. I wish I had made it to this while it was in the theater. With an RA endorsement this just shot to the top of my queue.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments It's on my list, too, Sally. I think I'm going to have a two-movie weekend!

I watched Things We Lost In the Fire three times this weekend... Benicio makes me melty.
