Sarah | 13814 comments I'm amazed that Chris Cooper in Adaptation is the same guy as in Seabiscuit.

The other one who looks different in every movie is Sam Rockwell. I always have a "that guy looks so familiar..." moment with him.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Denis O'Hare and Danny McBride are other great examples... and Alan Tudyk.

I didn't like The Evil Dead but by all accounts of my taste in movie I really should have enjoyed it. Did anyone else see/enjoy it?

message 404: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I can't keep all the "dead" movies straight.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I haven't seen that particular Dead movie, Sally, sorry.

I'm watching Goke, Body Snatcher From Hell right now. It's a cheesy Japanese thriller set on a plane. Birds keep splatting themselves against the plane windows, and the sky is blood red! What's going on???

message 406: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 74 comments Evil Dead needs to only be appreciated for it's cheese. Army Of Darkness was better, watch that one Sally :-)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments BRUCE CAMPBELL!

OMG. :)

message 411: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments This afternoon I watched Guy Richie's Rockarolla. While sections were interesting, it's mostly a Pulp Fiction retread, just slightly better than, uh, most Pulp Fiction retreads.

Ladies, I feel I should mention Gerald Butler's in it, and sometimes he takes his shirt off, too. You're welcome.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Thank you, RA!

:::files that information away for later:::

I've brought home the Marx Brothers' movie, A Night at the Opera, which was the ONLY Marx Brothers movie they had at the video store. Tsk.
I will be making popcorn later to enjoy with the movie.

message 413: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Watched "W" tonight. Oh, man.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments The one about George W? Was it worth watching, Larry? Or are we still too close for it to be entertaining?

message 415: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments My kids have never seen the Marx Brothers. I should do something about that.

Was "W" the Oliver Stone one?

message 416: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments I found W to be an entertaining film. I think you'd like it, Jackie.

message 417: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) That's the one. Oliver stone does such a good job with stuff like that. Yeah, it was a little too close to recent horrors, what with the recent outbreaks in Iraq and the stuff Cheney's been saying lately.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Thanks, Matthew, I thought it looked good, but I couldn't get anyone to go with me when it came out last fall.

message 419: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Josh Brolin is excellent, as is Dreyfus as Cheney. The woman who played Laura is way too hot, though.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments A friend of mine read American Wife A Novel, which is supposedly based on Laura Bush, and said it was totally uncomfortable reading the sex scenes. I SO get that!

message 421: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Me too.

Nuri (nools) | 538 comments http://www.hulu.com/watch/69300/movie...

I am painfully excited for this movie, with every indie-loving molecule of my being. I really hope it is every bit the charming mix of Arrested Development and Wes Anderson it is promising to be.

message 423: by Connor (new)

Connor | 8 comments RA I watched Rocknrolla a little while ago. I thought it was just a lousy recreation of Ritchie's Snatch. The acting was mediocre and the plot was just bad. I recommend seeing Snatch first so you can get a taste of his talent.

I also saw Earth the other night, which was expectedly amazing. James Earl Jones narrates, and its basically a summation of the award-winning show Planet Earth on Discovery. I think its pretty cool that Disneynature is planting a tree for every ticket purchased during opening week, which ends this wednesday. Sit in the front row.

message 424: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Hey, Connor, welcome back to TC...been a while, sir...

Yes, I remember Snatch...that was the one with Brad Pitt, right?

I kind of want to see Earth on the big screen. Maybe I'll take the kids next weekend.

message 425: by Connor (new)

Connor | 8 comments Hey thanks, yeah i've been pretty busy lately. And yeah thats the one, with Benicio Del Toro as well. Has anyone seen State of Play yet? I've heard good things.

message 426: by Connor (new)

Connor | 8 comments Oh and to comment on a recent discussion about the character actors: I think we're disregarding the meaning of the original word, Actor. I'd agree with Matthew that a character actor is singular. An actor is one who can take new roles like they've lived it all their lives. Otherwise I don't really think they deserve the title.

message 427: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I saw Transporter 3 today. My God, the film was bad.

I tried to start "Bride Wars", since I'm bored, and only lasted two minutes.

However, the preview for "I love you, Beth Cooper" looked good.

message 428: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments ::chuckles::

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Oh, geez, RA. "Bride Wars"? You are sick.

message 430: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Two minutes, Jackie, two minutes...the credits were still on...it sucks, because normally I like both Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson...

message 431: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Here's the "I Love You, Beth Cooper" trailer...I read the book last year...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zk04oh...

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Yeah, but you need something with at least a couple of stars, not that. "Almost Famous", or "The Devil Wears Prada" are better.

My go-to movie when I'm sick is "The Princess Bride", and it has a pretty girl in it, too. You should watch that, RA.

message 433: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Wow, RA. I hadn't heard of "I Love You Beth Cooper"... and you're right, the trailer looks funny.

message 434: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i finally watched the Dark Knight with my oldest son (who is a fanatic over this movie) and my wife. ehhhhh... ok. i was not thrilled. ledger as the joker or whatever was ok. good character for him. christian bale as batman ruined it for me. not cool enough as bruce wayne (unlikeable) and over the top weird with the breathy Darth Vader voice as batman. i know, i know, he is supposed to be "dark" but i couldn't get into it. pretty long too. and the chick (maggie something-or-other) wasn't likeable enough either to connect to. micheal keaton was my fav batman and vicki vale was the best batman chick

message 435: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Kev - I liked Michael Keaton too. I don't mind Bale as Bruce Wayne, but I hate his growly Batman voice. I loved the supporting cast - Maggie Gylenhaal, Aaron Eckhart, Ledger, etc... though I've always wondered what Billy Dee Williams would have done with it if they had gotten round to Two-Face with the Michael Keaton cast...

I'm debating seeing Wolverine tonight. Awful reviews, but I kinda want a popcorn movie.

message 436: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i like jack n. as the joker too. he was fun and had a great laugh. ledger was good but in a far darker way. more like insane clown posse

message 437: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments It's kind of like the difference between the old Batman comics and the 80s-and-after (Dark Knight Returns, Killing Joke) comics. I like both versions in different ways.

message 438: by Leshawn (new)

Leshawn | 109 comments RA,
I borrowed "I Love You Beth Cooper" from the library and loved it so much that I bought a copy and convinced a few friends to read it!
I can't wait to see the movie!
Today, I finally saw "The Visitor" which was great! The acting was excellent and it really touched me. I kept wiping tears from my face.
When I looked up the actress who played Zainab, I discovered that she is in "Ghost Town". I'll have to look for her because I bought a copy of the film but haven't watched it yet.

message 439: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments I watched I'm Not There tonight--awesome! Has anyone seen it? Six different Dylans!

message 440: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell I watched Burn After Reading last night. How is it possible for the Coen Brothers to have made such a uninteresting film? Have they lost their mojo?

message 441: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Yeah, I only thought it was ok, I agree...some funny parts, but the type of movie that looked more fun to make than watch...

message 442: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Well, I already know I'm weird ... but I enjoyed it quite a bit. So there you have it.

message 443: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments I heard it was really funny--did you guys think it was?

message 444: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I did, Leslie.

message 445: by Matthieu (last edited May 02, 2009 09:28PM) (new)

Matthieu | 1009 comments Burn After Reading was ok, Dave. Definitely not their best.

I watched The 400 Blows (for the 20th time) with my roommate and friend from Harvard. He's staying with us for the weekend, so it's the perfect opportunity for him to be exposed to the oeuvre of M. Truffaut.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I wanted to like Burn After Reading, but the tone just didn't work for me. The closet scene with Brad Pitt was just too jarring for me.

But I really loved No Country For OId Men, with Josh Brolin being the perfect laconic and world-wise cowboy. It helps to know, going in, that there aren't ever happy endings in Cohen Brothers' movies.

message 447: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments That's a great f--king movie. We haven't talked about Cormac McCarthy lately. We should talk about him more. That man is a literary God.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I've only read The Road by him. But Chris read All the Pretty Horses and really liked the language. He said he didn't think it was the kind of book I'd enjoy, because of the language, actually. Lots of swearing, I guess?

message 449: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I have a confession to make. While I am a huge McCarthy fan, I have never read more than fifty pages of The Road. I found the novel too terrifying. I'm not kidding.

All The Pretty Horses is an absolute literary gem. You need to get into its rhythms, though...he's definitely nonstandard with the way he uses language. I once had someone ask why McCarthy didn't use "normal" punctuation, and he followed that statement with "I wanted to attack the book with a red pen."

That's the only time in my life I almost punched someone over a book.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments The Road was really powerful, with its feeling of immediacy conveyed through the spare language and descriptions. And you, with sons, would relate so strongly I can see how it would be terrifying.
