We watched Reservation Road last night. The first half was painful and horrific and terribly sad. Nice acting skills all around, good script. The second half was painful and horrific because it was so tedious.
I actually just decided to take a little couch nap while it jibber jabbered on. Then when I was brushing my teeth Sweeeter filled me in: Juaquin goes and buys a gun and...Wait, maybe you haven't seen it.
I think I'm not a fan of Jennifer Connelly. And maybe not Marc Ruffalo, either, although I like him in some things.

We watched Doubt the other night. I thought everyone in it was super good. I had no idea what it was about before seeing it. Meryl is amazing. No doubt.

But I loved loved loved the astoundingly smart and funny dialog. And I loved the parents' characters.

Hey, did you notice Tom Lenk was in this movie? He played Andrew in Buffy the Vampire Slayer!
Tucker's brother? Who raised the hell hounds to attack the prom goers?

The plot started off really strong introducing us to Kirk's dad in a sequence that was really moving. All the character introduction stuff was great, too. As for the evil villain part, well, it was ridiculous if you stopped and thought about it - Star Trek physics have never been all that believable - but it moved so fast you didn't have time to say "hey, what?" And it had a few too many resemblances to Star Wars.
But it got the characters where they needed to go, and it was very clever in getting them in that alternative timeline so they could go someplace completely new. As the critics are saying, it was a "reboot".
There were a few too many fistfights for me, considering this is supposedly an enlighted age of civilization. But then, this is a return to "classic" Trek. Poor Kirk was a punching bag for half the movie! Oddly enough, he kept his shirt intact the whole time... The actor playing Kirk was great - handsome and cocky and believably rash, and while he wasn't doing an impersonation, he captured Shatner's style of issuing orders perfectly. Yay!
The only one who didn't work for me was young Spock, and that's probably due to my Spock fixation. Zachary Quinto might be cute, but he didn't resemble original Spock (not angular enough), and he didn't sound right, either. His voice wasn't deep enough, and he didn't catch Spock's cadences. More Spock-like dialog would have helped. He only got ONE "Fascinating".
The audience at the theater loved it, and applauded at the end. I can see this movie having a LOT of repeat business.
Even me! I missed a lot the first time through, because of the fast pace, so I'm considering seeing it again, maybe with mom in a couple of weeks.

Other than that, I enjoyed it. Like Jackie said, if you stop to think too much, you start noticing some flaws...but I think it was a clever way to reboot the series.
(And Jackie -- I agree about the little sidekick. Too Jar Jar for me... but I think I saw a tribble in that Federation outpost.)
A friend who saw it Saturday night said it was "too Michael Bay" for his taste, but I thought the budget was well spent. I liked the look and feel.

I don't hate you. You're all good in my book.
Interesting perspective/analysis, Koeeoaddi. :) I'm not a big Trekkie fan. I've never followed any of the other movies or the tv show except watching it on early Sunday morning with my parents (because it was the only tv station that didn't have church on it at the time), and I don't remember much about that. The only thing I remember about it vividly is an SNL spoof when someone said, "Dammit Jim! I'm a doctor, not a proctologist."

And I wanted them to all really go with the impersonation thing, and channel the original actors. Because I LOVE the original crew! The closer, the better, to me. But only some of them did, which bugged me a little.

Maybe I'm used to fast action due to all the testerone in my house and I've seen far worse, where I got disgusted because I couldn't follow anything that was happening. I followed this quite easily.

Lots of great NYC scenery and culture. Emotionally draining yet uplifting at the same time.
I give it two thumbs up.

HA HA!!! I saw it! I saw it! And what's funny is that I'm borrowing Undeclared, the Apatow television series, too... and alot of the peeps on that show are also in Nick & Nora's Infinite Playlist (and also, I'm recognizing quite a few from Freaks and Geeks). I'm enjoying both. I plan to watch the movie one more time and finish the series within the next couple of weeks.
We watched Breach last night.
Review/opinion to come, P.C. I'm unable to produce sentences until I have at least one cup.

I don't care enough about Ryan Phillippe to write a review of the movie we watched last night.
It was a netflix I can't remember wanting to see, except for the fact it has Chris Cooper in it.
I ♥ Chris Cooper. (Adaptation + Bourne Identity = *sigh*)
Except I couldn't recall that C.C. was in it - when describing it to Sweeter all I could say was "Don Cheadle is in it." So I know Sweeter was disappointed with it too.
In related news, did everyone know that C.C. DeVille recently had his 47th birthday?

But the movie last night was based on a true story: the story of Robert Hanssen. Which explains the dullness, but not why Mr. Cooper appeared to be wearing lipstick the whole time.

1) Fanboys. I'm not finished, but I feel ok calling this movie a complete mess with some funny Star Trek/Star Wars rivalry scenes.
2) Kill Your Idols. This is a documentary on New York's "No Wave" scene. The doc was decent, and the music definitely overlooked, but I was surprised at some of the connections the creators pushed between No Wave and bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I don't quite see the connections, honestly, other than they're both from NY or whatever. Still, I'm glad I watched the doc, and I'm even more glad the film was on my free movie channel:)

Enjoyable. Somewhat predictable. Beautiful women. Intriguing romantic scenarios.
3 stars.

I, uh, didn't notice...maybe I should watch it again...
:)
If you're on the sofa next to your mother in law and new husband, believe me, that three way was waaaay to graphic.

It's about a family that runs a circus. The mother falls ill, and her daughter falls into a dream world based on her own drawings.
Worth seeing for the visuals.

We watched X Men last night. Thought I'd be a bigger fan, but no. Anna Paquin tied up and breathing hard despite her "superpower" of touch was lame. Wolverine was lame. Storm, with her white eyeballs was lame.
Lame.
Lame.
