Félix (habitseven) I understand.

message 652: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Yeah, well this was Netflix and we borrowed it from a friend. But I know what you mean.

Fortunately, my family is completely normal, whatever that means.

message 653: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I got through Rachel Getting Married, but didn't think much of it. Anne Hathaway was great, as was the woman who played her sister...but it was just sort of unrelenting for my current taste.

My wife and I went and saw The Hangover last night...

HOLY SHIT IS THAT MOVIE FUCKING HILARIOUS!

You've all probably read the very favorable reviews for the movie, but let me tell you, it's one of the most relentlessly funny films you'll see in some time. It also features one of my new favorite film quotes:

"Counting cards isn't illegal, it's frowned upon. Like masturbating on an airplane. Ever since 9/11 everyone has been so damn sensitive. Thanks a lot Bin Laden."

message 658: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) Rachel Getting Married reminded me of family squabbles (minus the rehab experience). Who here loved the wedding reception? It felt so relaxed.
But would you be able to withstand an entire weekend of people playing music randomly?

Going to see Departures, a foreign film, this Friday. Looks interesting! But tomorrow is UP! WHEE! Seeing it when I expect the kidlets to be out swimming at those expensive camps!

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments I saw Goodbye Solo last weekend, and it was just lovely!

And Anvil the weekend before that, and it was... wow, just wow.

message 660: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments We went to see Away We Go tonight. Maya Rudolph was unexpectedly lovely. The cast as a whole was terrific -- Maggie Gylenhaal, Allison Janney, Jeff Bridges. It was sweet and funny in an unforced way. I really liked it.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I'd like to see the new Johnny Depp movie, where he plays Dillinger. Public Enemies, I think?

message 662: by RandomAnthony (last edited Jul 01, 2009 05:35PM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments A slew of Public Enemies scenes were filmed nearby...I guess a lot of buildings in Milwaukee and small towns in Wisconsin made good backdrops for the film. Everybody around here is going to see it, I'm sure.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments So, are you saying that Johnny Depp was in your neighborhood, RA?

message 664: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments I woulda acted the squealing fangirl for that one!

message 665: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments He was in Milwaukee, about, oh, thirty minutes from here. I was not a squealing fangirl, though, as he messed up traffic.

I saw it! I SAW! IT! It is funny. The bro-in-law reminds me of a friend of mine which made me laugh harder at his moments (which were plenty).

message 667: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments True story: A theatre employee had all the lights brought up and got everyone's attention in the movie theatre on Friday night when I went to see The Hangover. He told people to please turn off their cellphones. And as soon as he turned around and walked out after telling us to enjoy the movie, a cell phone started ringing. The gal in front of me started talking. I was like, "Are you kidding me?!!" How HARD is it to push the off button on your fricking phone?!! It's not.

message 668: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Grr. I hate that, Heidi. Also the people who think that it's OK to turn their screens on and text, since they're not talking. I can't remember what we went to see a couple of months ago where the guy in front of me kept texting until I leaned over and said "I can't wait for that party at Jamie's house this weekend! I wouldn't even have known about it if I hadn't been forced to read about it over your shoulder for the last twenty minutes."
Also, I kicked his seat a lot. I don't really know which one worked in the end.

message 669: by Heidi (last edited Jul 06, 2009 11:56AM) (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I'm embarrassed to say that my friend who was with me was texting with her daughter during the whole movie. This after she made fun of the girl who answered her cellphone when it rang. I won't be agreeing to a movie with someone who does that ever again. Ugh.

Maybe next time we shouldn't be so subtle and kick 'em in the head.

message 670: by [deleted user] (new)

Misha, you've got another Hitchcock worshipper here. North by Northwest is such a blast. My favorite is Rear Window; I never hesitate to watch it when it comes on.

Heidi, glad you loved The Hangover. Stay tuned; The Hangover 2 has been green-lit for production. Once again, they lose Doug...

We watched Waltz with Bashir last night.

Last fall I was forced into a continual writhe when it left my local indie theater after only one week, and I've endured a nine month wait for it to come to Netflix. Now that it has and I've seen it I wish I could take back the months of agony because it was so much less than I'd hoped that it would be.

Not that it wasn't good, that is. Parts were absolutely brilliant. The music was great. And how is it that I found the lead young soldier cartoon character hot?

I'd just built it up to be the next Waking Life, which it wasn't. This was a film about the horror and brutality of war. Done well.

4/5 stars.

Well, my amusement was more around the fact that the bro-in-law reminded me of a friend of mine... even looks like him. The bro-in-law carried that movie.

Sally wrote: "We watched Waltz with Bashir last night."

Sally, that's on my list of movies to see still, and has been since you suggested it for a movie club watch.

The bro-in-law was the best part by far. His man purse, his sunglasses, the way he flipped his hair when they were first ready to go out.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments His memorable quotes were aplenty, too (and often random, making them funnier in context).

I liked when he was singing in the back seat about the three of them being "best buds"

message 676: by Heidi (last edited Jul 07, 2009 10:29AM) (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I forgot about that moment. It was an awesome one, Sally! :)

Several vignettes of said friend (who reminded me of movie bro-in-law):

* He once rode 5 hours to a birthday party on his motorcycle... he was still wearing his suit from work. He didn't bother with changing into something appropriate.

* He dared an acquaintance to streak through the house yelling "I want to ride a motorcycle" and run out of the house and around the side, back to the porch... what's amazing is the guy did it.

* He spent 25 min holed up in a WalMart dressing room before his BFF got surly with him and asked what the hold up was because we were all ready to go - he gestured him into the dressing room and asked said friend, "Do these make my butt look big?" He was being sincere. We laughed the whole way to our destination about that.

* He speaks Mandarin v. fluently. He's v. Scottish. He's busted out with it on occasion while out at sushi restaurants with us... to the surprise of other patrons and restaurant employees.

Sarah | 13814 comments Watched Changeling on DVD last night. I had fairly low expectations, so it exceeded them. Very, very dark, but interesting and well acted and directed. Forgot that Eastwood had directed it.

message 678: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments If for no other reason I liked Waltz w/Bashir just for the format. (And yes, cartoons can be hawt!)

I haven't wanted to watch anything w/Jolie in it in a long time. She... distracts me.

Going to see Bruno sometime this week!

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Waltz w/ Bashir is playing this Friday night at our library for free. I might go.

I'd definitely go if they have free drinks and popcorn, too. :)

message 682: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I need to see Waltz w/ Bashir. I've surpassed my quota for depressing movies for this week, so it'll have to be another time.

Mindy- Jolie is ordinarily distracting, but I thought she did a good job of subsuming her looks in this role. The nude scene is horrifying (and she's skinny as a rail) -- not at all titillating.

message 683: by Meen (last edited Jul 07, 2009 11:48AM) (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Yeah, her body has never distracted me--way too thin, but those lips... And it's not necessarily attraction, more like fascination.

message 684: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Train wreck fascination. She's the epitome of Hollywood baby gone wrong. Her ego is so big, you could park a semi in it.

Or something like that.

message 685: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I don't think she's a Hollywood baby gone wrong! How many showbiz children are out there buying cars for their Chihuahuas or outdoing each other in vapidness? At least she's trying to spend her time and money and celebrity bringing attention to important causes - global causes. I like her.

message 686: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Ha! You're right. I just find her baby mania and Brad stealing a bit too much. That and I once read a Vanity Fair piece back when she only had Max that discussed how the nanny brought him in and it was as if she only "mothers" when others are watching. It was biased, and so now am I.

There are other celebs, like Susan Sarandon, I admire more.

message 687: by Sarah (last edited Jul 07, 2009 01:20PM) (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Ooh. I like her too. And Patricia Clarkson is on my good list right now.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Did you see that SNL short, Sarah Pi? What was it.. Motherlover?

message 689: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Yes!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake remind me of Steve Martin and Dan Ackroyd being "two wild and crazy guys!", but for the 2000's.

message 691: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Now, I don't mean to sound like I'm on a negative roll, but I'll take that risk. I truly disdain Susan Sarandon when she talks about politics. She and Sharon Stone sound about the same to me but for some reason Sarandon has better cred. Can someone explain why? She's just an actress, and only a mediocre one in my opinion, too.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Don't disdain Susan Sarandom, RA. Disdain the news media that gives her a platform, and gives her views equal weight to scholars and politicians working in the field.

At least Sarandon is thinking about world issues, and not what her next photo op is. I also like that she's allowing herself to age with grace, and not with Botox and surgery.

message 694: by Jackie "the Librarian" (last edited Jul 07, 2009 02:40PM) (new)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Here's the official site, Mindy. You have to sit through a commercial, first. And, it's uncensored, so maybe NSFW for some of you...

message 695: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Thank you, Jackie! That was awesome! (And there wasn't a commercial.) I love Dick in a Box and On a Boat, too. (I can't believe nbc.com is airing the explicit lyrics version.)

That's fair. Makes sense to me. Although she does have some responsibility, I guess, for believing her own hype, perhaps, but I also get the "if they're gonna put a mic in front of me I'm going to talk" angle.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Plus, you can always enjoy thinking "Dammit, Janet!" whenever she appears. ;)

message 698: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Watched the critic's showing of Julie & Julia last night. As in the book, I found Julie irritating (the effect mitigated slightly by Amy Adams), but Meryl Streep was wonderful as Julia Child. All of her scenes were fun and funny; Julia's love for her food and her husband and her Paris just burst off the screen.

message 699: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I just saw I Love You, Beth Cooper. I had high expectations since I read the book but the movie was only ok. They made the main character WAY too geeky, like, distracting geeky. Hayden Panettiere was a perfect Beth Cooper, though.

I love going to the movies during the day in the summer. This was the first time I've had a chance this year.

message 700: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (luvrdn) | 501 comments I go to the theatres as little as possible, I can't stand the stupid wrappers, it's like no one has ever had candy untill the movie starts. Why can't our society go two hours without eating when that screen comes up? Why do we pay six dollars for a box of popcorn?? I am going to see Potter tomorrow, I hope it is not to crowded.Thank you for letting me get my rant out of the way, I usually have to stifle it.
