In the Loop is playing at my local theatre--I really want to see it.

On a much more intellectual note, I recently rented Confessions of a Shopaholic and I Love You, Man. I quite like anything starring Jason Segel.

message 802: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I also love Jason Segel.

District 9 was fan-frikkin-tastic. Quite bloody and violent, but also moving. I love that they didn't cast famous actors, and that they didn't tone down the accents. I love that the commercials didn't spoil the film for me. Hooray for intelligent and non-pandering SF!

RAM JAM!

I saw The Wrestler this past weekend. :)

message 804: by [deleted user] (new)

The Wrestler was genius!!

message 805: by Heidi (last edited Aug 24, 2009 09:37AM) (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I loved it. Ram's broken relationship with his daughter was a bit too familiar to me, so of couse I was sobbing like a big baby every time I'd watch the two of them interacting.

I also watched the Shirley Temple version of Heidi. It's my dad's favorite movie. I was named after her. :)

message 806: by Dgold (new)

Dgold | 9 comments Wow! I like Hellboy also.

message 807: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I saw Adventureland tonight...great movie, much better than expected, with an absolutely impeccable soundtrack. Any movie that features The Replacements twice, including "Unsatisfied" at an important point, is worth watching.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I just saw "Away We Go" which features a small array of dysfunctional families, to contrast with the happy couple trying to figure out where to live. Apparently, most families are screwed up, which you know already, because it's a Sam Mendes movie. ;)
It wasn't the deepest of movies, but I cried anyways at the sweet way the happy couple commits to loving each other and staying together.
I'm guessing that RA would hate it, even with Maggie Gyllenhaal being a sexy mama in one of the scenarios.

message 809: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Why would I hate it?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I think you would find the dysfunctional couples very contrived and artificial, RA.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Tom was very convincing in Dracula as Renfield. Even the non-crazy part, when he was worried about Mina.

That Wu Tang segment was bizarre! How many pots of coffee did they go through?

message 812: by Leslie (last edited Aug 30, 2009 09:33AM) (new)

Leslie | 777 comments Last night I got Tyson and Gran Torino from the redbox. I watched Gran Torino--that was good. I agree that the transformation was believable. I felt sorry for his kids and grandkids--superficial as they were. He was mean to them and it hurt because he was dad and grandpa. When he was mean to his neighbors, they didn't take it personally and so they penetrated his shell. His family fled from the pain he was inflicting. My mother-in-law was mean like that and I know how much she hurt her family. You hover around, feeling guilty, retreating from the cruel comments, hating the person, but coming back for more, and always feeling rotten about yourself because you can't stand you own mom--in my ex-husband's case. And you can't understand, how does this person actually have friends? But she did.
I really liked this movie, the end was incredible. I thought the same thing the gang members thought he was going to do, not what he did.
I'm going to watch Tyson tonight. I think it will be good, too.
Also saw Pleasantville for the first time the other night--WOW!

message 813: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) We watched Crash last night. Powerful. Somewhat contrived, perhaps -- but powerful just the same.

Anyone else have an opinion on Crash?

message 814: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) I loved Julie & Julia. Does that count?

message 815: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments I want to see Julie and Julia--that looks great!

message 816: by Lori (new)

Lori Larry - you are just as behind on movies as I am! I really liked Crash, and I know there was argument that it didn't deserve the Oscar but I thought it definitely did.

Saw District 9 yesterday - I can't even remember what I last saw in the theater, must rectify that. Excellent, just excellent.

message 817: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I thought Crash was, as Jackie would say, contrived and artificial:)

I really really want to see District 9...

message 818: by Lori (new)

Lori Don't take the younger kids, RA, it's pretty gory and violent.

message 819: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Thanks, Lori...I wouldn't, anyway, because I actually, you know, want to watch the movie instead of passing popcorn back and forth and the like.:)

message 820: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Lori, did you like District 9? I'm reluctant to spend money on it, just yet.

message 821: by Lori (new)

Lori Hahaha RA, I took Jake and his 3 friends, and he wondered why I specifically sat down several seats away from his group.

Stephen, yes I really liked it. I don't often go to the theater these days, save that for pretty much those that cry out for the whole cinematic experience, and while I don't think this would suffer much on DVD, I am really glad we went.

message 822: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments Just watched Tyson and I fell asleep on the couch. It wasn't boring, it just wasnt that not boring--if that makes any sense at all. He sure has his own distinctive way of talking, and I don't mean the cussing, that's not unusual, all the other descriptive words he used--especially the frequent use of the word swine in referring to people.

HOW DID I MISS THAT THAT WAS TOM WAITS!!!???!! I'VE SEEN THAT MOVIE ELEVENTY BILLION TIMES! OMG, I'M PISSED AT ME NOW.

(p.s. I agree - it was a brilliant performance. I was impressed BEFORE I knew it was Tom Waits)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Wow, that was the weirdest spam message ever. The program must have accessed Leslie's post somehow and taken her name and then generated a message along with links to a commercial site. This was the message to Leslie from the spam:

Leslie
I'm sorry for the way that you were treated. Even though it happened, use it and turn it around for your good. You can look at your self as being a better person. No that you were special then and that you're special now.

Appparently the spam was very, very empathetic about Leslie's perceptions of that Tyson movie...

message 826: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Gremlins I tell you! Get it?

message 827: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments we watched Kingdom Of Heaven on saturday night and it was the best movie i have seen in a long time. i really enjoyed it. i love big scale movie productions and this one was epic (in the original sense of the word, not the current pop def) orlando bloom and liam neeson were both very good in it. def two thumbs up

message 828: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) I thought Kingdom of Heaven was a bit of a snoozer, but Kevin, what did you think of the Gates of Heaven back in 80s?

message 829: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments no idea about that one stephen. i don't watch many movies. i did really like kingdom of heaven. i don't need Die Hard type action in a movie. i thought the story was good and the overall theme was good also. i am into big scenes and large scale filming so i really liked it. made me want to re-read The Source by James Michener

message 830: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Kevin, I think what bothered me with Kingdom of Heaven was it dealt with the Crusades. To this day I blush when I think of the Crusades.

message 831: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments it admits at the end that the crusades were about money, power and land as well as for fueling the adventure/maiming fires of the guys who went. there has been a long history in this world of misguided and terrible events that were started under the guise of religion. btw - i am not religious. i duck and weave to avoid that term.

message 832: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) History ain't pretty all the time.

message 833: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I loved District 9, and Adventureland (and the soundtrack was fantastic, I agree, RA) and Away We Go.

Saw Inglourius Basterds last night at the drive-in. A violent lark, which is an odd thing to say about a Nazi movie. I thought it was entertaining and clever and satisfying enough both as a movie and a revenge fantasy.

That said, District 9 gave me far more (cat)food for thought.

WHERE? I'm so confused.

message 836: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I erased it...it was spam...

Sarah Pi went to the drive-in. Goddamn, I'm jealous.

message 837: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) There isn't a drive-in within fifty miles of me

message 838: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments If we went to a drive-in collectively, as TC, and were short of cash, Kevin would have to hide in the trunk.

Or maybe Sally. She's pretty short.

message 839: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) AS seen by my avatar, I'm far too chunky to hide anywhere.

message 840: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I would not recommend hiding in the trunk at this particular drive-in. While we enjoyed it overall, their customer service skills leave something to be desired, particularly if they want to save their dying tradition.

Observe the house rules: http://www.bengies.com/HouseRules.php

In the first five minutes we were there, we got yelled at for driving 6 mph in a 5 mph zone ("If you have to slow down for speedbumps, you're going too fast"), and for parking in the wrong spot (they claimed that our car was an SUV, which it isn't).
Zu bought a Coke at the concession stand, tasted it and nearly spit it out. When she asked for a refund or refill of something else, they said it tasted that way because they no longer carry coke, it was "Bengies cola". No refund.
Some poor girl outside the concession stand took a picture of herself in front of the blank screen -- and nearly got chucked out for it. No photos, no cameras, they mean it. They could prosecute her in federal court if they wanted.
Whew.
Why are all of the cool old movie theaters around here operated by nutjobs?

message 841: by [deleted user] (new)

We have a drive in about 20 miles down the road, but I haven't been to it in a couple of years

i would do that. just give me a box of malted milk balls and a root beer and open er up when the main feature starts. lets all go see one of those Planet Of The Ape marathons at a drive-in

My dad used to let us ride in the trunk for fun.

message 845: by Kevin (new)
