Stephen (stephenT) Funny Face Wow, that's impressive. Why not Sound of Music That's my favorite calm my butt down flick.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I needed real frivolity, Stephen. I needed to "Think Pink" and watch Audrey express herself empathicalistically, and not have a care in the world.

"The Sound of Music" wouldn't have worked, because there is WWII and the Nazi threat, and I was trying to escape that very setting, Stephen.

message 903: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments Thanks for the detailed review, Jackie, I was thinking about going--NPR had a good review, but I knew also that Tarentino is known for violence. I've never seen one of his movies---I think I will keep it that way! :)

message 904: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Sheesh, Jackie, I hadn't thought of that. I always stop before after the wedding scene.

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Leslie are you talking about the Fresh Air where Terri Gross interviewed Tarentino? That made me want to see it as well.

message 906: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments We don't get Fresh Air here :( I heard about it on Morning Edition.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Hey, I saw "Watchmen" last week, and I thought it wasn't bad at all. About what I expected, from reading the graphic novel.
No, it's not a crowd pleaser, there's no big fight scene with the hero winning over the villain at the climax. It's more complex than that. Who are the villains? What makes us human?

It was interesting to go back to that 80's mindset, where everyone was so worried about nuclear war with Russian. And yet, it also seems so naive, from a post 911 perspective.
I didn't love it, but I didn't love the novel, either. But, it made me think, which is really saying something for a spandex-costume hero story.

message 909: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I liked the Watchmen, too! But one of my closest friends thought it was awful...that really surprised me. She said she saw it in a theater, though, and I saw it on video, when I could fast forward through the boring parts.

message 910: by [deleted user] (new)

I may have to go Red Box or whatever that is called and pick up that movie this weekend.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I watched it at home, so I could take breaks as needed. I'm sorry I didn't get to see the special effects as big as they were intended, but going from the little boxes of a graphic novel to a fairly large tv screen was pretty impressive enough.
If I hadn't read the graphic novel, false expectations might have made me not like the movie, either.
You think, oh, it's like X-Men, where you have fairly clear cut heroes and villains. And then, it's totally NOT like that, and there's the back and forth on the timeline thing to deal with, and the ending where the heroes don't win, and you wind up with a lot of confused movie-goers being disappointed.

message 912: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I thought it captured the spirit of the book pretty well, though. Alan Moore is grumpy.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I thought it was amazingly like the book, but with prettier-looking people. And without the pirate substory, which I didn't mind losing.

message 914: by Nuri (new)

Nuri (nools) | 538 comments Attended a Sunset Boulevard screening for class last night. I realized it was the first movie I've seen since an inhumanly depressing little Indie back in the spring. Sad.

But SB was amazing. Really creepy and really cool. Never knew I'd like Noir so much!

message 915: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Hi Nools,

"I'm ready for my closeup, Mr DeMille." And the whole movie is narrated by a dead man! Wonderful flick.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments That one's great, Nools. I love the bridge game, with Buster Keaton among the players.

We have plenty of that around here--when it isn't so hot it singes the lungs! LOL

message 919: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments We went and saw Public Enemies tonight--it was good! On one hand I like the moral ambiguity, Dillenger did good things, the FBI did bad things--totally realistic. But I wondered if it went too far, since Dillenger ended up being the hero of the movie. I took my 16 year old and she definitly thought Dillenger was the good guy--although being played by Johnny Depp can make a hero out of anyone. But Dillenger was a criminal, he stole lots of money and directly and indirectly killed a lot of people. I think his character was too sympathetic. (Or maybe I was, who knows)
Or, on the other hand, maybe it showed us more of his heart, and that made him sympathetic in spite of the crime, which they didn't minimize or downplay, I don't think.
This movie really has me thinking about all that. Very thought-provoking.
What do you guys think?

message 920: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) I haven't seen it Lobster Queen.

message 921: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments I'm sure the movie selections in Madagascar are quite limited, so it's understandable. By the way, have the penguins showed up yet?

message 922: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Yes, and they are very silly.

message 923: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments Yes, they are verys silly, aren't they? I think my daughter liked them the best out of all the characters in that movie. What kind of movies do you like, Stephen, AKA Sir Bumptious?

message 924: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I just read that Johnny Depp is going to star as the Lone Ranger.

Meghan Fox is going to play Tonto.

Ok, I'm kidding about that second part. But the first part is true.

message 925: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) I love kids movies. I'm a Scorsese fan, because I've been watching him since the '70s. I loved Julie&Julia. The thing is, as I age, violence begins to really upset me. I take it too much to heart, it took days and days to shake off Reservoir Dogs! And I loved that flick. It was a true Greek Tragedy, where Dionysus wins.

But I will definitely see Johnny Depp as the Lone Ranger. I don't care who plays Tonto. Depp alone can make a movie worth the price of admission.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I saw "Julie & Julia" last night. It was delightful! I loved the sweet relationship Julia had with her husband, Paul. And Jane Lynch as her equally statuesque sister was a hoot!
Very good, I recommend it. But for those of you who prefer to watch movies at home, there's no reason you can't wait for the DVD. It doesn't have any special effects that need the big screen, and it's a homey movie that would play well seen from the couch.

message 927: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Thanks, Jackie. It's going on the Netflix list as soon as it is available.

message 928: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Make sure that it is, Larry. We will know if you try to fool us.

message 929: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Uh ... sure.

message 930: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments Hey--I like Johnny Depp too! I'll have to tell my daughter about the Lone Ranger. He's such a good actor.
Want to see Julie and Julia.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Ohhhh, I've been on a retro sweet, feelgood movie kick lately. On my recently seen (as in within the past three weeks) list -

Dr. Dolittle
Heidi
The Ghost & Mrs. Muir
My Fair Lady
Funny Face
Paris When It Sizzles
Gigi

And in the cue:

Mary Poppins
Houseboat
Love In the Afternoon
The Yellow Rolls Royce
Fanny
Daddy Long Legs
Father Goose
An American In Paris
Singin' In the Rain

GAH!!! Those movies make me so happy.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I admit it. I would LOVE to go to that Harry Potter attraction Knarik posted the link for. Butterbeer at the Three Broomsticks! Chocolate Frogs!

Hmm, all my fantasies involve food...

message 937: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Daniel Radcliffe is not included among the snacks? How disappointing eh?

message 938: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Jackie?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments What, Stephen?

message 940: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Was a joke about you, Daniel Radcliffee, snacks, your regret he wasn't a snack. ::This comment contains a bad joke.::

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Okay, Stephen. He's a kid to me, you know.

message 942: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Oh, I know Jackie. Besides, by not the entire world has seen his all in all. Brave lad Mr. Radcliffe, the lead in Equus is no easy breezy part, it's hard work and he did it with power!

Knarik Jim wrote: "Not often enough, but we'll take what we can get :-)."

message 945: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) So there you are Leslie the Lobster Princess. I have been wondering about you. Not sure when mating season starts, but I was afraid you'd run off to New England or something equally fearful. I always miss you when you aren't around.

message 946: by [deleted user] (last edited Sep 17, 2009 06:29AM) (new)

Good Lord, Heidi, those movies are just an overdose of happy! You must need plastic surgery to remove the smile off your face.

Adventureland is sitting atop my TV this week. I haven't gotten around to seeing it, but I'm eager to watch it...when I get a moment.

(gus, i've needed an overdose of happy and escapism lately with the work schedule i've been keeping this past month.)

(p.s. hi friend! hi hi hi! i've missed you, friend! i've missed you lots! give the pretty princess big kissies from me, okay? it's good to see you, friend. ♥)

Hello, Sir Bumptious, no trips planned, especially none that involve mating season! :)
I just get busy and don't get on here everyday. Also I'm reading Wally Lamb's new book, and I can't put it down!! I love him! I think I'm going finish it today. It's kind of good he only comes out with one every ten years, because it's a life disturbing event!

Thanks for noticing when I'm not around--that makes me feel good.

Hi Heidi! I'm glad you are getting your dose of smiles from all those movies. I haven't seen most of them in years.

message 949: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Of course Leslie, I notice the absence of lobsters.

message 950: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments I know, we are quite distracting at times. :)
