Sarah | 13814 comments I think the drive in would get very suspicious of the back window full of ficus. That's a sure sign somebody is hiding something.

message 853: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments we would all just shake our heads around gently like we were those bobble head dogs that people used to sit in the back windows

Yep, the Skyline. And it's showing "Inglourious Basterds".

What happened? Leslie posted something normal and then some spambot hijacked her words?

message 859: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Sally wrote: "What happened? Leslie posted something normal and then some spambot hijacked her words?"

The tragedies keep multiplying. The ficus would have to pay admission too.

message 860: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments It would. And if you bring in plant food, you'll be automatically ejected, though you can purchase a Plant Food Permit for $7.

message 861: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) That's pricey plant food. Can't we feed it a poodle or something?

message 862: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) *goes to look up the number for ASPCA*

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments :::looks askance at the new Venus Fly Trap next to the ficus, wonders what Stephen's been feeding it:::

Is that thing getting bigger?

message 864: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) It only eats flies, and the ficus eats poodles. I saw it. I did, you know.

Félix (habitseven) Stephen wrote: "It only eats flies, and the ficus eats poodles. I saw it. I did, you know. "

It's a bald face lie. Stephen's makin' stuff up now.

*shakes head*

message 866: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Well the ficus is the one with ficuspids. My Fly Trap eats only flies.

message 867: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Doh!

message 868: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I think there must be a spam program that somehow can read the name of the person who posted last, then posts a new message as if it's addressed to the person who just posted. I'm fascinated by the spam message, though (see post 854), because it assumed that you, Leslie, said something that warranted sympathy. So apparently the best way to spread spam is to assume message boards are sad.:)

message 869: by [deleted user] (new)

The ficus does like the occasional potato chip though, but no dogs have been injured in the raising of the ficus.

Now if you can all go back to ignoring the ficus, because Larry & I are trying to relax in the recliners watching the big screen TV behind it, and every time you all go to move it we have to readjust.

message 870: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Yeah! (Thanks, Jim.)

message 871: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Well, okay, if that's the way you feel about it. don't invite me to watch tv.

message 872: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Oh crap. Come on in. Just sit on the floor there.

message 873: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) No, no. Wouldn't dream of it. I'll just go watch my flat screen with the Venus Fly Trap, and my luxurious lazy boy recliner.

BYOR Stephen, but be very quite, and grab a beer out of the fridge on the way by if you want.

Just to be sure it is understood I was kidding to Kevin.

message 878: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments exactly. keep that in mind. anything clever, charming, cute or insightful is all me. anything else is the mad spammer

Stephen (stephenT) Y'all are grouchy. The lot of ya.

message 892: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments So the computer program can be sympathetic--that's creepy.

The message it sent me was weird, but very compassionate and it did help me deal with the trauma of falling asleep on the couch and totally missing the part where Tyson bit off the other guy's ear. I was kinda upset about that--and now I feel so much better and I really do think I'm a better person for it! WOW!!!

Electronically generated sympathy--creepy!

message 893: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Is this like "Something Wicked This Way Comes"

message 894: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments Is that a movie?

message 895: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Ray Bradbury book, then movie.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Woooo! Sounds interesting, KD. But, how gory? Too gory for me?
I'm watching "The Beast Must Die", with Peter Cushing, the "expert" from Rocky Horror, and Dumbledore! Er, I mean Michael Gambon.

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Oh yes! I need to see this one! thanks KD.

message 898: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) I can't watch those movies anymore, they mess with my dreams, and those are far worse than the movies. LOL

message 899: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments Me too Stephen! I have terrible dreams and whenever I call 911 in my dreams, I get a recording that says thank you for calling, your call is very important to us, please hold on--or something like press one for homicides, press two for traffic violations, press three for home invasions. I never, ever get people when I call 911 in my dreams, and 911 worthy events are always happening!! It's crazy!!

message 900: by Jackie "the Librarian" (last edited Sep 08, 2009 01:01PM) (new)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I saw Inglourious Basterds over the weekend, and while I really liked parts of it, especially the role of the Nazi security officer who can speak several languages, overall I found it disturbing and too violent for my sensibilities.

I guess I don't care who it is, I really don't want to see anyone, even a Nazi, get bludgeoned with a baseball bat.

What I liked:
- The Nazi security officer and his great big Sherlock Holmes pipe. Played by Austrian actor Christoph Waltz, he is a fascinating character with no scruples.
- The plot about the Jewish girl who escapes capture, and then has an opportunity to avenge her family and kill top Nazi brass handed to her on a silver platter. You can feel the tension pouring off of her in the scenes where she's talking with Goebbels and other high level Nazis, and she makes a great femme fatale during the big climax.
- The effect with a movie being projected onto smoke, wow!
- The colors, especially the reds.

What I didn't like:
- The whole "Inglorious Basterds" side plot, with Brad Pitt's character recruiting Jewish soldiers to kill Nazis, and scalp them. There was a feeling of buffoonery to this group that dragged down the movie, especially during the climax, and made what should have been powerful into a smirking joke.
- Cruelty being made into something for the audiences' amusement.
- Poor pacing slowing the movie down, and losing the tension. I felt Tarantino reaching for the kind of banter he had in Pulp Fiction, and dragging out scenes with quirky touches that didn't quite work.

This movie has gotten a lot of glowing reviews, and I can see that point of view. With some tighter editing, and less violence on the screen, I would agree. But in my case, I had to go home and watch some scenes from Funny Face to calm down.
