Katie (asimplewish) I am looking for books that relate to comas or amnesia. I'm not looking for paranormal related, but realistic fiction. I do know of Blink Once (which was great) and Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac. Is there anything else? Thanks in advance!

Emily (librarylil) | 358 comments I'm late to the game, Christina, but the Enchanted Forest Chronicles (Patricia C Wrede) were among my favorite as a teen and I still love to reread them. Meets the criteria: princess but not to princess-y, fantasy.

message 558: by Kelley (last edited May 31, 2013 03:54PM) (new)

Kelley (ksceccato) | 20 comments I am interested in fantasy and sci-fi novels (YA and otherwise) that paint queens and female authority figures in an admirable light. All recommendations would be welcome; even when books are already on my To-Read shelf, recommendations help me prioritize.

I'm reading Cinder at the moment, and while I like and admire the protagonist, I can't help noticing the way that authority is depicted. The Earthen leaders -- the good guys -- are nearly all male (the lone exception being a "Queen Camilla" who isn't painted in a sympathetic light at all). But the evil empire is led almost exclusively by women. All female authority figures in the story so far (I'm a little more than halfway in) range from unsympathetic (Queen Camilla) to thoroughly evil (Queen Levanda, all her predecessors, and her second-in-command). Even though I'm enjoying the book so far, this rankles me, as it reminds me of how often female authority is depicted as evil, even when a woman is writing.

So I'm looking for alternative, more positive views of females in power. I'm more interested in queens than in princesses -- unless the princess is actually the heir to the throne, as opposed to someone who could only wield power through an advantageous marriage to a prince from a neighboring country.

Hillary (eledri) | 759 comments Risa is just...good stuff.
The Demon King (Seven Realms, #1) by Cinda Williams Chima The Exiled Queen (Seven Realms, #2) by Cinda Williams Chima The Gray Wolf Throne (Seven Realms, #3) by Cinda Williams Chima The Crimson Crown (Seven Realms, #4) by Cinda Williams Chima

Even though she gains her power through marriage...it is positive and she is an amazing protag:
The Girl of Fire and Thorns (Fire and Thorns, #1) by Rae Carson The Crown of Embers (Fire and Thorns, #2) by Rae Carson

message 560: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments I was gonna suggest those same two series.

In the Seven Realms books, the monarchy is a Queendom. Raisa is the princess heir.

In the Fire and Thorns books, Princess Elisa is married off to the king of another country, but she's definitely the better ruler.

message 561: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) LMAO, now I would have said Seven Realms too.

I haven't read Fire and Thorns yet, so my other one I'd say is the Lumatere Chronicles.

Finnikin of the Rock (Lumatere Chronicles #1) by Melina Marchetta Froi of the Exiles (Lumatere Chronicles, #2) by Melina Marchetta Quintana of Charyn (Lumatere Chronicles, #3) by Melina Marchetta

message 562: by Leonie (new)

Leonie (leonierogers) If you haven't read any Terry Pratchett yet, and want something just a little different, perhaps try The Wee Free Men The Beginning (Discworld, #30 & #32) by Terry Pratchett . There are several that follow on, and the Discworld has a plethora of fascinating female characters - and they're all just a bit different to any others you'll meet.

I would recommend the Looking Glass Wars which is a spin off the Alice In Wonderland story. Loved it.

I see you've read The Step-sister's Scheme. You rated it will, the next in the series, The Mermaid's Madness (Princess, #2) by Jim C. Hines is way better. And the women kick butt way more!

I would also recommend the Alanna The First Adventure (Song of the Lioness, #1) by Tamora Pierce series. Granted she originally gains her "power" pretending to be a boy, it is the woman she becomes that truly owns it. ANd there are "men" that somewhat aid her but she always holds her own.

That's a fun series; love the humor in it.

I see Jenny mentioned it already but The Greyfriar (Vampire Empire, #1) by Clay Griffith is also very good. It's a completely different vibe (not as fluffy) than the other series, but I loved it for different reasons.

message 577: by Cameron (new)

Cameron Mascari (cameronm) | 46 comments Hello friends, I am 24 year old male, I prefer dystopian YA. I don't mind some romance but I prefer it as a back story rather than the main storyline. I like dark books, so that always helps. Not crazy about fantasy but if it's a good book I don't mind.

The last couple books I have read have not been enjoyable so I am crossing my fingers!
Thanks :)

message 578: by Stacia (the 2010 club), groupaholic, YA-MA founder (last edited Jun 05, 2013 10:38AM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments I think dystopia is harder to find books that are less romance heavy right now and I'm not really sure why. This is actually something which bugs me because dystopian sci-fi is the one genre where I don't necessarily need romance in my books. I still like some romance heavy dystopia but I don't pick up those type of books for that specific reason.

Wendy, Isa, would Chaos Walking fit? I've only read the first, but it seems less fluffy.

The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking, #1) by Patrick Ness

or maybe

Unwind (Unwind, #1) by Neal Shusterman

If you're open to other genres, here's a few where the romance isn't quite as featured :

Post Apocalyptic :

Blood Red Road (Dust Lands, #1) by Moira Young (there is one, but a lot of the book is about fighting and survival)
Feed (Newsflesh Trilogy, #1) by Mira Grant (this is adult but a lot of YA readers love it)

Urban Fantasy :

Hold Me Closer, Necromancer (Necromancer, #1) by Lish McBride

Realistic Fiction/thriller :

I Hunt Killers (Jasper Dent, #1) by Barry Lyga

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments I honestly don't know about Knife because I'd only read the first. I was just okay with book 1, but some people told me that they liked 2 and 3 better, so I guess there's no way to know without reading, haha.

Both Knife and BRR have different speech patterns which take getting used to; I'm not sure what your thoughts are on that. Iirc, BRR had no punctuation or something of the sort.

Some of our other members might have a few other book ideas that I didn't think of.

Sandra | 867 comments Post apocalyptic? Under the Never Sky (Under the Never Sky, #1) by Veronica Rossi The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden, #1) by Julie Kagawa Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee
There's some romance element in them. As Stacia says it's difficult to avoid in YA but this are book I'd recommend to my male friends.
Not dystopia : The Rook (The Checquy Files, #1) by Daniel O'Malley Storm (Elemental, #1) by Brigid Kemmerer .
Fantasy: The Thief (The Queen's Thief, #1) by Megan Whalen Turner The Demon King (Seven Realms, #1) by Cinda Williams Chima (sequels best the first one in both cases)

Isamlq | 612 comments Stacia, you've named some of my ALL TIME FAVES! But, yes on CHAOS WALKING AND FEED. More people need to read The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking, #1) by Patrick Ness and Feed (Newsflesh Trilogy, #1) by Mira Grant .

And how about Wool Omnibus (Wool, #1-5) by Hugh Howey ?

message 587: by Cameron (new)

message 591: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Um, lol, I LOOOOVED Chaos Walking. All three, and I thought each book got better and better actually. The Knife of Never Letting Go was the weakest.

I would also say Feed, that was amazing.

I also second Stacia saying Unwind and the Necromancer series. Those are great.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Hadn't thought of Angelfall, which is post apocalyptic and not paranormal romance like the cover implies. I think that
I knew Wendy would have more of a clear answer to Chaos Walking.

Angelfall might be okay as a post-apocalyptic (it's not pnr as the cover would imply) because the romance is more of a 'what if' thing? There is an attraction happening in the background but it's not the main point of the book, imo.

I don't know about UTNS working because the Perry/Aria connection is a pretty big focus of the story and the world building is hazy. Even though I love the series, I think it's got a strong emphasis on romance. Or maybe I just caught too caught up in that side of it and I'm way off. Who knows? I've been wrong before. :)

The movie looks nothing like the book but I will still see it (Brad pits character in the book is an interviewer and we barely hear from him except the questions he asks).

It's a different book to be sure (written in interview form, after the zombie apocalypse is already contained) so it's kind of hard to get used to at first because it is kind of like a bunch of little stories. It is really enjoyable though.

PS thanks everyone for the suggestions!

By trashy do mean steamier or just more of anything goes type behavior?

Because I always think Abbi Glines tends to write stuff that gets a little heated and can be on the sexier side. But her books are so hit and miss. Some are decent and others are crappy. If you don't want to start a series in the middle (because the one I would be more likely to recommend would be second in a series), you could probably try Vincent Boys. I wasn't a huge fan of it, but I would have liked it a lot more if I'd read it before reading her other books because my main complaint was that it felt like a copy of her other series. So if you're new to her, that should read fresh and might qualify as a fun and trashy romance.

Now if by trashy you mean sketchy behavior, then you could always try Between the Lines (Between the Lines, #1) by Tammara Webber or Perfect Chemistry (Perfect Chemistry, #1) by Simone Elkeles

But I second Hillary on Anna and the French Kiss if like she said you could go for a lighter romance. It's not trashy but it's a lot of fun. I love that book.

Robin (Bridge Four) (fionafixit) So I just finished Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma last night. It was really good but super heavy and totally messed with my head.

I need a recommendation for something much lighter, with a happy ending of some sort. I was going to start Looking for Alaska by John Green but I think I need something a little less cry-able first.

Anyone have something they love like that?
