I read the play Splendor in the Grass, which is actually based on the movie. I will watch the movie shortly to compare. The play was 3 stars, in my opinion. I think it would have made a better novel with more detail.

I finished The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time late last night. I couldn't put it down! Next I plan on starting one of this months group reads. I've been wanting to read both of them!

I've never read the Count of Monte Cristo before, but I was told that the movie is a lot better, and different then the book. I'd definitely watch the movie after you read it though. It's really good!

On the flip side, I've never seen the movie and I thought the book was brilliant. I don't know if I want to mess with my thoughts about the book by seeing the film versions!
I finished East of Eden and loved it. Am going to start In Cold Blood next, but must get some work done first.
I just finished reading The Wild Things by Dave Eggers. Quick read, but wasn't that exciting. I'm about to REstart reading a book I started towards the end of last summer that I never got around to finishing, which was getting exciting at the part I stopped at. It's called Evil at Heart by Chelsea Cain.
I'm going to start Hawaii by James A. Michener, which has about a million pages, so I'll be reading that one for a while. But I'll also try to fit in a few other shorter novels. My goal was to read 30 this summer. I have 20 days to read 10 more books and the rest of the Little House series.

Granted, the size of the collection seems to be determined by the fact that his books are insanely thick more than the number of books I own. I have no clue how many I have, but I know for sure I have Hawaii, Space, Centennial, and a ton of others.
I'm slowly making my way through The Passage by Justin Cronin. I like it so far, but it's taking me forever to get through. Once I finish The Passage, I'm going to get a start on In Cold Blood.

I started Hawaii last night. Oh my goodness! I love it and I haven't even gotten to the main plot where people show up!
I've just finished reading "The Reader" by Berhard Schlink which I didn't enjoy as much, but maybe because it was a translation, and I'm not making my way through "The Silver Linings Play Book" by Matthew Quick which is fantastic x

That's such an amazing book! I have two autistic cousins and it's incredible how accurately the boy is portrayed, Mark Haddon is such an under-rated author for that.
I just finished Transition by Iain Banks, which messed my head up so much I thought I'd have a rest, so I started Candypop: Candy an dthe Broken Biscuits by Lauran Laverne. I'm not too old for teen fiction, honest :)
Jonathan wrote: "Just finished Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era , which should definetly be a must read for anyone interested in the Civil War. It is the essential book on the subject. Now ..."
Let me know what you think about The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. I've been thinking about buying it.
I just finished The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. Loved it! Now I'm on to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Kimberly wrote: "I just finished The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. Loved it! Now I'm on to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo."Glad you liked The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie! I liked The Weed that Strings the Hangman's Bag even more. I hope you enjoy the Stieg Larsson book!
We (contemporary lit class) just read this book this summer. It sort of a difficult read, due to it's anti-novel 'style', but once you get pat the first chapter it does become bearable. You WILL need a wikipedia reference of sorts, some of the characters in the book are REAL! Lots of french terms and references to Barnes' Madame Bovary.
Just finished The White Tiger and absolutely loved it!! It was definitely a... unique way of exposing what it's like to live in poverty.Starting The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.
I finished The Boleyn Inheritance today, which was disturbing but interesting nonetheless. I'm not sure yet what my next book will be. I'm between Wuthering Heights, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, and I, Mona Lisa. Any suggestions?
I really liked Wicked. I know a lot of people love Wuthering Heights, but it wasn't really my thing. Which one did you end up picking?I've just finished The Count of Monte Cristo and loved it! Edmond is such a lovable character and I believed him justified in him revenge. The attention to detail by Dumas is just amazing and the plot he crafted is wonderful. In other words: READ IT (if you haven't already).
Like Daisy, I didn't really love Wuthering Heights. But I also didn't like Wicked that much.I'm glad you liked The Count of Monte Cristo! It's a fantastic book with lots of layers. Edmond is quite a likable hero, too.
I have to admit, I really, really hated Wuthering Heights. I hated all of the characters and didn't find it to be a romantic, tragic love story like the blurb claimed it to be. I have mixed feelings on Wicked. I wanted to love it, but it was very long and dragged in many parts. The musical was much better :)
I keep hearing people say that in respect to Wicked, you either love the musical and hate the book, or vice versa. I haven't seen the play nor read the book, so I can't really judge. The reason I wanted to read the book though was so I could see the play (I didn't want the play to spoil it for me).I actually ended up choosing Wuthering Heights, though, lol... I'm still trying to get into it. You guys aren't very convincing, but I'm determined to at least give it a try!
At the moment my reading has been somewhat side-tracked. I started reading The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie for a group read in a differnt group, but got side-tracked by The Time Traveler's Wife, which I couldn't put down. I have just finished the latter book and have found myself side-tracked yet again. I thought I would just read the introduction to South by Sir Ernest Shackleton but the action starts right away and I don't want to put it down until I have absorbed the whole adventure!
Anika - Then let me encourage you: I've heard from a lot of people they really loved it. And I didn't hate the book, it just wasn't a very remarkable reading experience to me.
I just finished Best Friends Forever by Jennifer Weiner. Now I'm going to start Eat, Pray, Love. I've wanted to read it for soooo long. :)
I'm currently reading Tipping the Velvet. I'm not very far in so far. I just got home from vacation, so I've been paying more attention to my boyfriend than to my book. :D
I finally finished Blue Highways by William Least Heat Moon which took me way too long to read. I've moved onto Fishbowl and am finding it to be a light, quick read.. exactly what I needed.
I just finished The Host by Stephenie Meyer. Next up I'm going to read The Maze Runner by James Dashner.
Finished In Cold Blood Saturday, started and finished The Lovely Bones Sunday and started Hunted Sunday night.
I haven't finished anything in a while but I'm moving on to The Historian. One more serious (by that I mean long) book before I go back from my last semester ever...
I just started reading Jonathan Safran Foer's Eating Animals, but I'll probably have to return it to the library before I'm finished with it.
I'm about 200 pages away from finishing East of Eden. I'm loving it, but it is a lengthy one! I'm convinced now that I need to read all the Steinbeck I can get my hands on.
Jess wrote: "I'm convinced now that I need to read all the Steinbeck I can get my hands on."Do it! I also loved The Pearl. But I'm sure everyone's heard me wax poetic about my love for Steinbeck before...
I've been reading Jorge Luis Borges' Collected Fictions. It's all short stories, but so far they are all really interesting!
Jess wrote: "I'm about 200 pages away from finishing East of Eden. I'm loving it, but it is a lengthy one! I'm convinced now that I need to read all the Steinbeck I can get my hands on."I've come to the same conclusion...and I'm kicking myself for taking my copy of his 6 short novels to my apartment already. I can't get them until next Wednesday or Thursday, when I go to stay. :(
I finished rereading Catching Fire last night. I think the first time I read it I was soo excited to read it that I read it too fast. There were a lot of details I didn't remember! I'm still also slowly making my way through Anna Karenina.
Jen, There's nothing wrong with slow progress on Anna K. It took me a year to read it because I took a 9 month hiatus.
My goal was to have it finished by the end of August but I don't think that's going to happen. I haven't picked it up in a week or so because I got so bored of Levin talking about his farm.
My advice to you is to skim through the agricultural and political discussions. They go on forever. They're dry and boring. And you don't need to read and understand every single word of them to get the gist of what is said, which isn't really even that central to the plot.
I loved Anne of Green Gables when I was a kid so I've decided to read through the whole series. The first time I read it, my school library didn't have all the books so I was forced to jump around. I just finished the first book and plan on starting Anne of Avonlea today.
I'm currently reading Heartsick by Chelsea Cain. It's pretty good so far. I'm about half way in. I read the third book in the series, this is the first. Obviously I enjoyed the third book to be reading the first. :D Good stuff. My next book I'll be reading is My First Movie, Take Two: Ten Celebrated Directors Talk About Their First Film but I kind of want to watch the movies first that the directors are going to discuss. (I'm majoring in film)
I had to return Eating Animals to the library, so I dug Batya Gur's Murder on a Kibbutz: A Communal Case out of my box of books that are moving with me to read in the meantime!
I just finished reading Impulseby Ellen Hopkins. I am now reading The Overachievers by Alexandra Robbins
I am reading Eleanor of Aquitaine: A Life. It's not exactly light summer reading but I'm enjoying it. It does smell like cigarette smoke though...one of the down sides of the library.
Jen wrote: "I finished rereading Catching Fire last night. I think the first time I read it I was soo excited to read it that I read it too fast.
