Heck yeah! I'd have one of those huge libraries with shelves to the high ceiling and one of those ladders on rollers you'd have to use to get to the highest shelves... a lovely fireplace, a bay window with a comfy window seat, and for days I'd want to recline, a beautiful chaise lounge... and, and, and... sigh...

I almost always read a book on SK's recommendation (on the cover) when I come across them, so I'm glad this list is here. Happy Reading!

Welcome, Sabrina from that big state of TEXAS! It's so nice to see readers who began reading King at an early age and became hooked. I had to wait a few years before I would become a fan, as King hadn't even been heard of in my early teens! The Shining was published in 1974, I graduated from high school in 1975, and I don't think I heard about King until he published Salem's Lot or The Shining. Sadly, I can't remember which one was my first King book, but I do remember it was mother who introduced me to King. She frequently bought best-sellers, regardless of the genre.
There are a few movies that do justice to the books, IMHO. Here is a list:
Stand By Me, based on the novella The Body from Different Seasons.
Shawshank Redemption, based on the novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, also from Different Seasons.
The Green Mile, based on the serial book by the same name, The Green Mile Book Box Set.
Misery based on the novel of the same name.
Hearts in Atlantis, based on the first novella in the book of the same name.
Dolores Claiborne, based on the novella of the same name.
Made for TV movies, It and The Stand weren't too bad, although slightly watered down.
Cheers!

Thanks Debra! I will post some of those books soon.

People who don't read him don't understand - they dismiss him as just a horror writer. NOT .... I have always found that the greatest horror that he writes about is what human beings do to each other - look at The Dome. The Dome itself was just a vehicle that led to the horrors the people committed upon each other.
No one wrties American culture like Stephen. He is brilliant and insightful. I could go on and on but I will stop. I hope he writes forever!

Thanks for joining us, Johanna! The EW column you are referring to should be on my list. I went through them all and added them. Hope I didn't miss any!
I think that is great about how you feel close to you Dad when reading King. My mom introduced me to him, and I feel the same way. Very cool.

Johanna wrote: "Sure, Linda! This list is from SK's column titled "My Summer Reading List" in the June 3/10, 2011, issue of Entertainment Weekly (p.76-77).
This is apparently a brand new list, and one I had not read about, so I have added the books to our growing list on my "sai-king-recommends" bookshelf. Plus I've added his blurb about each book to my reviews.

Welcome, Eileen. I completely agree with you about how Stephen King isn't really about horror (at least not since his early years). I get very defensive when people try to write him off as just a horror writer, and don't realize what a terrific writer he really is. Or... they just judge him by the earlier films based on his novels, yet don't know that many of the better films were based on his books and stories. I mention Shawshank Redemption, for example, and people are amazed that was based on one of his novellas! And yes, I could go on and on, myself!

Yeah - I could go on and on about this! I think Shawshank Redemption is one of the best examples - great story, great movie. Not all of the movies were great, but the stories were. I think that he has been greatly underrated over the years. He is a brilliant writer - so many people I know won't read him because they "don't read horror"! Their loss. I read The Stand 3 times - the last time was the extended version. The Dome is also one of my favorites - I hope that it gets into good hands for the movie version (I am assuming there will be a movie!). Cannot wait for the book coming out in the fall!
I have read more books by Stephen King than be any other writer - beginning when I was 13, when Carrie came out, and now I'm 51 - he's been there just about all of my life! I hope he never stops!
It will be a sad day for me and many when King passes on. It will leave a hole in many constant readers' lives. He just can't be topped.

I live in the south west of Australia with my cat, my books, and my music... but more books than anything else!
Hey, Starry! Glad to have you here. Feel free to jump in on our discussion of Twisted River. It has been quite interesting!

Hey there! I visited Scotland once. Beautiful country, great people! Yes, King says if you don't have time to read, you don't have time to write. He says he's always got 1 or 2 going in print, and one in audio. Pretty impressive, huh?
Welcome aboard!

After reading King's non-fiction book On Writing it was tempting to put pen to page, so to speak. He certainly gives a lot of tips on how to write well. Maybe in another life...

Yes, the Dec-Jan group read is going to be a big one. We just started Fieldwork, if you'd like to join in on that one. I've been reading it, and it's pretty good so far!

Ooooooh! You listed 3 of my SK favs. I've read the original version of The Stand once or twice and same for the revised version. I've read It at least twice, and will read it again.
And.... OMG! I could never get tired of reading and reading The Dark Tower series of 7 starting with The Gunslinger. I laughed, I shivered, I chewed my nails off, I hung on the edge of my seat, and I cried my heart out.
The last time I read the Dark Tower series I read all the other SK books with known connections to the Dark Tower. I have a list I followed and it was real fun to revisit old friends and watch for those characters, events, places, things, sayings, etc., that have lead us all on the road to the Tower. Some people think that ALL SK stories are connected in some way, no matter how minor. A bit far-fetched, but I'm willing to believe on some level, because I'm crazy like that.
Anyway... I'm supposed to be welcoming you aboard! Thanks for joining us!

I have a plan, for sometime in the distant future, to re-read all Stephen King's novels and short stories and make a list of characters, places, and things, etc. which are repeated in his books, especially his Dark Tower connections. A huge project... hmmm... wonder if I'll ever do it!?
