Susanna (jb_slasher) Judy wrote: ""Survivor" sounds good, I'm adding it to my TBR list :) What are you reading of Scandinavian mythology?"

Oh, I think Survivor is one of Palahniuk's best. I've been meaning to re-read his stuff for years and I'm finally getting around to it. Very excited :)

I'm reading a Finnish edition of The Poetic Edda. It's a collection of poems about the olden days in Iceland. The poems themselves are a thousand years old and these poems mainly tell of the myths of that age. The Finnish version has been split into two parts, the poems dealing with gods (which I read earlier this month) and the poems dealing with heroes. I've just picked up the latter one. The former one was about Odin and Thor and Loki and all them folks if that sheds any light on what I'm trying to talk about :)

message 25929: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) Hi Rayna!

I'm not an expert on the subject so I can't really recommend anything so if you'll excuse my Wikipedia browsing... :)

I'm not sure if the Edda has been published as a single volume in any language. But I think the Finnish editor mentioned using Henry Adams Bellows' translation of the Poetic Edda (1923) when he worked on his own translation. As for the Prose Edda, I guess you would be pretty safe betting on Penguin Classics and checking out Jesse Byock's translation (2006).

If anyone has differing opinions, please voice them? As I said, I'm not an expert on the subject and I'm reading Finnish translations so I can't guarantee anything about the English ones.

message 25937: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 310 comments It's a Stephen King novel, a ghost story so, yes, it has horror elements but it also talks a lot about the healing power of art which to me made it even more powerful.

message 25938: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 310 comments I think it's one of his more "literary" books. The ghost story is pretty creepy, I think you'll enjoy it.

message 25939: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 310 comments I have read Blaze. I like what he tried to do with the story and making it like Of Mice and Men (one of my favorite stories) but something about it kind of falls flat for me. But I read it so long ago, I don't remember what didn't work for me. I do remember it added the phrase, "That's how I roll" to my lexicon though. :)

message 25940: by Scott (new)

Scott | 257 comments Kyle, I just read Duma Key earlier this year and I thought that it was excellent. It is more of a suspense novel than horror. I highly recommend it.

Claire (clairebear8) | 514 comments Kyle wrote: "It sounds like I would enjoy it. I love a creepy ghost story.

Have you read Blaze by Stephen King yet? I've heard good and bad things about it. I'm not sure if I should read it or not.

Thanks f..."

The art in Duma Key has elements of horror in it. It is used as a technique to bring out the evil and sinister. It is, as always is the case with his books, very well written and great character development. Its definitely not my favorite of his books but it was good. I agree with Scott, its more suspense than real horror.

I'm reading Touch and Go by Thad Nodine. This one is from Unbridled Books and I really like the way it is written. It's from the perspective of a blind man - who is on a road trip with his sponsors and their foster kids to deliver a hand made coffin to their dying father.

Trust me, it's one to be added to your lists!

I am about to begin Night Falls Like Silk A Novel (Eagle, Kathleen) by Kathleen Eagle
