30.4 Like I Need An Excuse.....
Part 1: I'd rather be off exploring exotic cultures, so I read
Getting Stoned with Savages: A Trip Through the Islands of Fiji and Vanuatu by J. Maarten Troost
4 stars
This book wasn't quite as good as his first, but it was still strong in history, anthropology, and humor.
Part 2: Domestic Worker - Seamstress
(Book approved in help thread)
Behind the Scenes: Or, Thirty Years a Slave, and Four Years in the White House by Elizabeth Keckley
4 stars
Ms. Keckley bought her and her son's freedom from slavery utilizing her sewing skills. She then moved to Washington D.C. and became the personal seamstress to Mary Todd Lincoln, Mrs. Jefferson Davis, and other society ladies. This was a very unique story, because the author did most of her work within the White House and witnessed many of the interactions between the Lincolns during the Civil War. In Fact, Mrs. Lincoln requested Keckley's presence the night of her husband's death.
