Review: A lot of UF features a strong female protaganist who can fight with magic, swords, teeth and occaisionly claws. Heart of Stone is different. Margrit Knight's strength lies not in the physical or magical, but the mental. As a lawyer with Legal Aide, she's learned the value of determination, stubborness and negotiating. Suddenly thrust into a world with Gargolyes, Dragons, Djinn, Selkies and Vampires, Margrit's heritage and experience give her an interesting perspective in dealing with the five Old Races. To her, they are not monsters. Fiercly opposed to racism of any kind, she views them as people, not human, but still people who are no worse than those she deals with every day on the job. Negotiating with the Old Races is just a matter of figuring out their motivations. I really enjoyed reading this and will be finishing the rest of the trilogy soon.

I'm gonna try to get my book done by this weekend, but a good friend is getting married, and I'm attending 5, yes 5!, different events in 4 days so it's craziness, plus work and all, so who knows. Might not get to it until next week.

The Taste of Night 4/5 stars
This series has a very interesting premise. There are heroes based on the signs of the Zodiac and each major city has 12 Light sign Zodiac members and 12 Shadow sign Zodiac members. The Light fight the Shadow to ensure balance. The Shadow want to destroy the Light members of the Zodiac.
Our heroine, Olivia/Joanna (I call her OJ) is both Shadow and Light. She can move between both worlds, and it is rumored that she is the Kairos. Both the Shadow and the Light want to claim her as theirs.
In this installment, OJ wants to avenge an event in her past, stop a virus from killing everyone, and stop her father. Oh yes, a little loving on the side would be nice too.
Lots of action, excitement, edge of my seat moments. I've added the next book to Mt. TBR.

After seeing two paranormal reviews complete already (way to go you two!). Was wondering if I should count clockwork angel as my paranormal (it's in the library) and that way I won't hold up the group as I haven't started BDB yet and it sounds like it may be a slower read.
I originally didn't want to use clockwork angel, as it would be my 4th review for a Cassandra Clare book and I also wanted to challenge myself, now I'm getting worried.
What do you all think?
In regards to reading on my phone, I definitely love it, I just think I might be able to read faster on the iPad, since I won't have to turn the page every minute or so.

Finished 3/23/11 ~ 4★

AH, thanks for the buddy read! Definitely better book than the first. I'm ready for #3! :)
Somehow all that felt messed up about book #1 seemed to fit into place in book #2. The story flowed so much better. Jo/Olivia (OJ) is still learning about her powers, still reeling from losing her old life and still not playing too well with others. She's now a part of the Agents of the Light, but just can't seem to keep from running off to do things on her own, no matter what they tell her to do. Maybe that's the problem, they should TELL her to do anything?
The battle to stop the deaths of hundreds of innocents and solve the mystery behind it were very interesting. The fight scenes are always good. And, there were plenty of LOL moments with OJ and her BFF.
I look forward to continuing on with the series. Here's hoping they are all as good as this one!

Tania, I'm not sure what to recommend. I haven't yet read CA, so I'm not sure how it compares to her MI series.

Thanks for the response. I have decided to stick with book 1 of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, "Dark Lover" for my 'Paranormal' read.
I started it last night and despite a bit of a slow start (reading all of the character definitions) it got a lot better aftwr I got past that part. It's definitely getting interesting a few chapters into it.
I agree with you Cinnamon about clockwork angel, I definitely liked the mortal instrument series better, I found it a hard read to get through at times, unlike the MI books which I could have read non-stop if my family didn't need me! (ha ha)
Hope all is well with the group and happy reading!

Happy Reading, Ladies! :D

Vaughn....hmmm...yummy.....hooks up with Faith an F-Psy...a very valuable F-Psy...she has the ability to foresee the future....Was an enjoyable read....I am really liking this series...the PsyNet reminds me of Star Trek and the Vulcans...mindmelds and those abilities....I cant wait to read the third book...which I have heard is really really good...
My only peeve is the cover...I had an image of Vaughn as what the cover guy looks like and then I read that he has long amber coloured hair...Just wish the cover guy looked as Vaughn was described....Cause that guy is hot!!!
Happy page turning fellow bingo mates..

Kylie’s life is breaking down around her: her parents consider divorce, her boyfriend dumps her and immediately starts going out with another girl, and a stalker has been introduced into her life. It isn’t until Kylie gets caught at a party -- with under-aged drinking and drugs galore -- that her life gets turned completely upside down. Her Ice Queen mom decides to send her to Shadow Falls Camp, a psychologist-recommended institution for troubled teens. And soon, Kylie discovers herself stranded in the midst of brainwave-reading paranormal creatures that couldn’t and shouldn’t exist. Confused but feeling an undeniably weird sense of belonging, Kylie begins to realize just how special she really is. Kylie’s stalker also starts to make sense -- a startling relief after all the anxiety. But then trouble invades the camp, and the paranormals are pointing fingers at each other. Beware, happy little campers, someone has an agenda of their own, and they are quite the determined bunch.
C.C. Hunter’s debut, Born at Midnight, was attention-grabbing and hard to put down. However, the plot started out incredibly slowly. It is slightly understandable, as the author has to first describe the characters and the setting of this new series. But the predicament, which should be central to every novel, was brief and felt like an after-thought. Imagine this: pages after pages of descriptions and little action, a few chapters devoted to the build-up of tension, the short resolution, and then the end of the novel, which ends up feeling like accidentally running smack into a brick wall and maybe losing a few teeth in the process.
And onto the apparently mandatory element of a YA PNR book: the love triangle. The one that exists in this book felt pretty much superfluous. There was no reason for its creation in the first place, and Kylie’s indecision and fluctuating feelings becomes a bore to read about after a while. Girl, it is not right to be lusting after three guys (her ex-boyfriend included) at once, especially if you alternate between thinking about kissing one boy to thinking about the hotness of another a second later.
Born at Midnight is a nice read, not entirely original, but still interesting nonetheless. The second installment of the series, Awake at Dawn, will be released in October 2011.

Will you be continuing the series or stopping there (just out of curiosity)?

Hope everyone has a great weekend!!

Happy Reading, Everyone!!

Maybe the freaky cover book:

Not sure, I'll post something definite by tomorrow. :)

I'll read

I just finished my paranormal book, "Dark Lover" by J R Ward on March 26 and I give it a rating of 4+/5.
Despite the slow start, this book was a complex and interesting read. Full of action, spectacular & sensual romance and full bodied characters.
This was by no means a simple read, you've got to pay attention to fully grasp the storyline and character development. I found myself having to re-read a few pages every time I started reading after taking a break; but my memory is bad from medication, so it could just be me.
This book was intense and was IMHO, a great start to the series which left me wanting more!
Tania

Thanks! I realized that after hubby ?d which shelf was announced and added it. :)

Review...
Pretty good... not great, but I enjoyed it. Eventually...it takes about half the book to get into the actual plot - like "Oh. This is a story about werewolves?"
Grace is a tad annoying, she just can't figure out whats going on in her own head. She thinks too much: "I-love-him-but-I-hate-him, but I-love-him-but-I-hate-him." So basically the book is full of pages and pages of that.
:P
Bit of a religion overdose at times. But I like the way the whole story pulls together.

2/5 stars
I really wanted to like this book. I really tried hard. It just seemed to drag and drag on for me. I found it hard to relate to Rose. I just didn't care about her predicament as an accused murderer awaiting trial. Rose's friends break her out of prison so that they could clear her name. Rose travels with Dimitri and Sydney to the safety of a small town. I liked the addition of the Alchemist character Sydney. She made for an interesting addition to the very large cast of characters. Abe was also one of my favorite characters. I'm glad that this series is finally over.

I'd rather read BDB book 2 but I couldn't find it on the bookshelf.
Have a great week everyone!

LOL, I'd be surprised if someone considered BDB YA :)

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this one. I think adults may enjoy it a bit more than YAs b/c much of the story is slow to build. But, it sucked me in from the beginning. I'm looking forward to the next book, Immortal Beloved #2: Darkness Falls, due out in Sept.
Here's what I liked:
~ Very unique storyline: immortals who have spent so long alive that they've lost their love of life and have built a wall around painful memories (and there are many) to make it through their endless eternity
~ Slow, but interesting reveal of main characters' back stories, which lead to a better understanding of how they got to where they are
~ An immortal rehab where they are retaught how to live in the moment and stop practicing dark magic
~ Interesting twist on immortals and the history (what little we learned in this edition) of their existance
~ The YAs in the novel may look like teenagers, but they are actually hundreds of years old, so it didn't feel like a YA novel (at least not a typical one)
Things I didn't like:
.... can't think of any ....
ETA: The only thing I can think of ~ the "baddie" in the rehab group was predictable, but it didn't take away from the story, IMO.
Overall, a very good start to what should be a fun series
