Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments WTG, Team! Lots of reviews! Glad everyone enjoyed their UF book.

Zina, I'm so glad you enjoyed Neverwhere. I thought it was a very unique and fun read too.

cindy (cinlin) @Steph: LOL I feel like a toddler stumbling around GR sometimes. Not often... But still, it's quite an interesting feeling:).

@Zina: I've had good and just ok experiences with the 2 Gaiman books I've tried. Maybe I'll add Neverwhere to my TBR shelf...

I loved Hellion's updates! Did you see Vinaya's review? http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Tania Rock (guilegirl) | 142 comments I finished my urban-fantasy read, City of Fallen AngelsApril 14, 2011. 4 Stars.

I am one of the few that seemed to "quite like" (not love) this book. I still totally enjoy the characters and storyline of this series; and in this installment Simon's character is more of a focus, which I really enjoyed. As well as the introduction of a few more characters with tons of story potential(which hopefully will be expanded upon in the future MI novels or even an off-shoot series).

There was a lot going on in this book and at times I was confused, but in the very end a lot of this was cleared up. I do wish that Clary and Jace would get a break and let some of the drama go to say Alex or somebody else?? Their relationship has spent more time, it feels like 95% turmoil and 5% couple interaction..... thinking about it, they really have yet to even attempt a real relationship. I actually feel sad when I think of them, not all happy etc..... Their relationship may be destined to fail unless the storyline/writing changes drastically, as it seems to be such a major part..... Clary chasing Jace, Jace chasing Clary and so on.

My fingers are crossed for the fifth installment, but based on the ending of this book; the Jace and Clary torment will continue. There are so many interesting characters, it's a shame for all of the torment (or most of it) to be focused on these two.

Tania Rock (guilegirl) | 142 comments Well after reading more great reviews, my "to read" list grows and grows. I think I'm going to follow your example Steph and add a favorite series bookshelf, to help me prioritize better.

Happy weekend everyone.

PS Cinnamon if you are still on vacation, have a Pina Colada for me;)

message 406: by cindy (new)

cindy (cinlin) @AH: Aiya~ Vinaya's review made me demote City of Fallen Angels from 3 to 2 stars...
@Tania: LOL will do:).

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Great review, Tania. Glad you enjoyed it. I've been messing around with my shelf tags to try to get a better idea of what's what. I still don't have even close to 1/2 of all my owned books listed here, so that makes a difference. But, I'm too lazy (and scared to see the #s) to post them all at this point. I'll just add what's missing as I read them.

While do that though, I realized I have a bunch of 1-2 books in a series I haven't read and should either start them or donate them. I'm not feelin' some of them as much as I was when I bought them. We'll see.

Happy Weekend! :D
New shelf to come tonight or tomorrow, depending on free time.

Any recommendations there?

message 416: by Desperado (last edited Apr 17, 2011 01:31PM) (new)

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments Isn't that ironic, AH? I can't decide whether to read Frost Moon or Kitty Goes to Washington for the new shelf. I guess it depends on which one I finish first.

I've only read two of your picks so I can't be of much help. But I'm obsessed with Karen Chance's "Cassie Palmer" & "Dorina Basarab" series so I'd definitely go for Touch the Dark.

message 417: by AH (new)

AH | 2271 comments It is ironic. And I started Kitty right before the list was posted. It's OK. I've been wanting to read Touch the Dark, but I may just want to read the next Kitty. They go fast for me. Can't decide. Plus it's Passover this week and I've pulled in extra work hours....

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments LOL Lethal! Hope you enjoy, AH. Aisling is at times fun and others annoying, for me. I have to space those out to enjoy and I've only read two so far. ;)

I still haven't decided, but will today and start reading tonight.

Since they're both on the paranormal-fiction shelf, I guess it'll come down to which one I finish first. ;D

@ Steph. Good book, IMO. I bought the third Jane True book, but somehow haven't managed to get around to reading it. One day ... sigh.

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments I love the mix of Celtic mythology and Native American Shamanism in the Walker Papers. You wouldn't think they'd go well together, but somehow C.E. Murphy makes it all work. I plan on purchasing Spirit Dances (Walker Papers, #6) by C.E. Murphy the next time I buy books.

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments AH - I saw you chose You Slayed Me, but I woulda said Hex Hall - it's a really fun, light-hearted YA.

Geez, these last few weeks have been flying by! I'm gonna finish Alpha (ETA: oops, meant Stray, skipped a couple books, lol) tonight, then I'll pick my next shelf... maybe ReVamped (Void City, #2) by J.F. Lewis or Claimed By Shadow (Cassandra Palmer, #2) by Karen Chance ?

message 435: by AH (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments I'm late for the voting, and I know you both already picked your books, but I couldn't help myself with the chiming in. :)

AH, I'm with Lethal--definitely Cassie Palmer. I agree with Steph that the stupidity ditziness of Aisling needs to be taken in small doses. The first two were ok, but then I read the third and couldn't take another bit of Aisling. Ever again.

And Steph--you need to read the 3rd Jane Yellowrock, it's the best by far. I can't wait for the 4th after reading Mercy Blade.

message 438: by AH (new)

AH | 2271 comments I must start that Cassie Palmer book one day. I'm still looking for a copy - my library doesn't have it.

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments paranormal-fiction book finished @ 20 Apr 4★
Tempest Rising (Jane True, #1) by Nicole Peeler

Review:

I had a hard time connecting with Jane initially. While the loss of her first love was obvious and the town's treatment of her was terrible, I just wasn't, well, interested. Until Jane makes a discovery in the ocean which sets things in motion that change her life forever. And, the addition of one hot vamp, Ryu, didn't hurt a bit either.

Jane True lives with her father in a very small town. Many people in the town think she's strange and they don't keep their feelings to themselves. But, she continues to go about her life, working in a bookstore 'Read it and Weep' (love that name) and taking care of her father, doing her best to ignore them.

She knows she needs to get life, but she cannot seem to move on from the loss of her first love. That is until Ryu, a vampire who's in charge of investigating the death of a tourist, comes to town to talk to Jane. While Ryu and Jane's 'relationship' does seem to move fast, you can't blame her b/c she's held back for so long and he sets her hormones a blazin'.

Jane learns that everything, including her family history, is not as it seems. She's introduced into a life full of the supernatural.

Jane's internal dialogue was a hoot. She has a witty sense of humour despite all she's dealt with in the past. It's fun seeing the "real Jane" come to the foreground.

I loved all the supes in this story. Many of which I'd only ever seen in the movies. I thought they were all written well. The world building, while slow to be built, was one that I look forward to return to soon.

Once the story picked up, I couldn't put the book down. I really, really enjoyed it. Had it not been for the slow start, I would've rated it 5★. I'm very anxious to read the rest of the series and happy that I have the next two handy right now.

message 444: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Okay, finished my UF book so we can get our stamp :)

Stray
4.21.11 ***

When I initially finished, I thought, wow, this is a good book, and I gave it 4 stars. Then, I started writing down my thoughts in a review, and it got demoted to 3 stars.

Despite its length, the book is engaging and reads pretty quickly. This is the first in the series, and I have now been introduced to Faythe - and I gotta say, she was much better than I expected. She's got some TSTL tendencies, but she's tough, and started to use some brains somewhere in the 600-some pages I just read. There's a bit of violence in here, and some of it was hard for me to read, but that's when skimming comes in handy. The love interests leave something to be desired. Faythe starts off at college with a bf, then goes home where her ex-fiance and a childhood friend both want her, and the bf ceases to exist. I'm hoping some questions get answered in the next one. I am looking forward to more from this series, so the author has done her job.

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments Finished my Paranormal fiction read last night.

The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker (Strangely Beautiful, #1) by Leanna Renee Hieber The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker, Leanna Renee Hieber, 4-20-11
Rating: 3 Stars
Review: There's something haunting and slightly dreamlike about the title and cover art of this book. At times, that's almost the tone achieved in the writing. At other times, not so much. Unfortunately, this created a problem for me. I never quite felt like a part of the story. Instead of being a participant in the action, I was following along as a spectator, never quite connecting or having any emotional investment in the characters.

Another problem I had, occasionally the prose was overwrought. Conversations between Percy and Alexi became bogged down and I just wanted a scene to be over.

Finally, as a heroine, Percy came across as timid and weak. Yes her appearance was unusual and she had to deal with a lot of stares and whispers. But sometimes I just wanted to shake Percy and, stealing Alexi's line, tell her to "Stop apologizing!"

I wanted to love the book more than I actually did. The concept was interesting , but I would have liked to have seen more of the other members of the Guard. Overall, I liked it enough to give it another chance and try the second book in the future.
