I can't afford to buy too many hardbacks. Frustrating as a lot of books are released in hardback a whole year before the paperback comes out these days, but oh well.

Char wrote: "Hmm... everyone seems to agree that His Dark Materials is forgettable. The opinion on book 3 differs. It's a marmite book."

I adored it at the time. I even adored The Amber Spyglass. Only reason I've forgotten it is because it's been so long and there have probably been a good 500+ books read between then and now! It has a very anti-Christian feel to it that some people really don't like, but I doubt that that'll be a problem for you!

Fair enough. Nah that won't be a problem for me. I'm not Christian.

I'm reading Poison Study at the moment. I'm feeling pretty neutral about it so far. It has all the right ingredients but it's just not engaging me as much as I'd like.

It took my entire family reading that before I decided to pick it up - I wasn't too sure about it until the end, it does pick up, or at least it did for me :)

The dance scene in Iron King reminds me of the dance scene in Pride and Prejudice...where they can't stand each other but feel forced to dance. (Although the dislike was for very different reasons! LOL)

Amber (elfkingdom) | 74 comments Right now I'm reading The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty and I'm so disappointed! It's so BORING! The movie was interesting, but I thought I'd give the book a go since it's hailed as 'The most terrifying book ever written'. It's not :-(

I haven't heard about it, but it sounds like some parody of "eat, pray, love" :O (which I haven't read either)

Yey! I love Pride and Prejudice! :) If you enjoy it, you should check out the BBC Production of it. It's a 6 hour mini series.
It's really faithful to the book and Colin Firth is omg hawt! as Mr Darcy. =D (Jennifer Ehle is also very good as Elizabeth.)

I know all about the mini series, my mom is a P&P freak. She has read the book zillions of times! But I will read the book first and then I'm going to watch the mini series...

How old are you? I'm not asking in an offensive way, it's just that I tried to read it once when I was 15, then when I was 18 and then when I was 20. And then again, when I was 22. And I got really bored from the first chapter and never finished it. And thought I was never going to read it, I wasn't even interested in it.

Maybe it's the age, maybe it's the circumstanses, I'm 24 now and working and having a pretty steady life... While back then, I was a student and having a good time and books like that just didn't fit in...

I read it when I was 19 and finished it the same day I started! My brother was annoyed because he had to go the library again the following day (my daughter was newborn, so we stayed at home).

I had to read it again for my british lit class, and even my classmates who hate reading (almost all of them xD) loved it!
