I've given up on City of Bones for the time being. Started Let the Right One in by John Ajvide Lindqvist in prep for next week.

message 1004: by [deleted user] (new)

I have Let the Right One In on order at the moment. Should get it at the end of the week, fingers crossed. Not sure what I'm going to do about The Shining yet - I've got a few big books on my Oct TBR list and I doubt I'm going to get around to it in time but I will try!

I just finished Alexander Death (The Paranormals, #3) by J.L. Bryan and figured, as it was the last in a trilogy, I should round off the Uglies series too with Specials (Uglies, #3) by Scott Westerfeld .

message 1005: by Jeshu (new)

Jeshu (jeshusauria) I'll go to my library today to see if the shining is available :D
I'm still struggling with city of bones, and I'm halfway A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess for the banned books challenge. My mind right now is a crossover where Alex and his druggies give a little bit of the good ol' ultraviolence to Clary and Co. It would be a dream come true.

I'm thinking I might go to the library for The Shining too if I get around to reading it. I've read a couple of Stephen King books before and they're okay but not sure I want buy another one.

I've never read A Clockwork Orange, the film gave me the chills enough. Those two worlds would be a strange cross-over indeed.

I'm hoping the boyfriend's got The Shining tucked away somewhere so I won't have to buy it. XD

If he doesn't maybe you should hint that he should 'magically' find a copy ;D

message 1009: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Okay my lack of concentration has struck again. Not that it matters, I've read my 10 books for the month, anything else is a bonus. So I've picked up 13 Little Blue Envelopes (Little Blue Envelope, #1) by Maureen Johnson I'm nearly halfway through (after 90 mins of reading) and I'm really enjoying it. It's nice to read a book that's good after something you don't.

I was going to try hinting that I'm sure that he would like to read The Shining and see whether that would get him to buy it! =D Of course, to get him to buy anything I'd have to get him to detach himself from his computer - not an easy task now that he's started studying again.

Someone recommended that to me when I was looking for a heart-warming romance but I couldn't find it in an ebook format. (I read Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins instead which hit the spot!) If it's really that good I might splash out on the paperback next time I am doing a haul on Amazon. :D

R.L. Mathewson (rlmathewson) | 3 comments Savor the Danger Just started this series with this book. I didn't realize at the time when I bought it that it was part of a series, but I'm enjoying it enough that I'll probably get the other books and read them as well.

Pallak | 23 comments Emma , I don't even want to put the book down till i finish reading it. It's a story about two star-crossed lovers. A good girl falling for a bad guy ! You should definitely order this on Amazon. Read the back cover of the book and I'm pretty sure you'll like it ! :)

Yay Criminal Minds!

message 1021: by Jeshu (new)

Jeshu (jeshusauria) I'm reading The Shining by Stephen King for the october read, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon , which I left behind for the sake of Georgia Nicolson (which I devoured)

message 1022: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I am reading: The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff Well I will be tomorrow anyway.

By "tomorrow" I mean Monday lol. :P

message 1023: by louise (new)

louise (monstrumology) I've finished The Godfather by Mario Puzo and now I'm reading The Shining by Stephen King for the October Group Read. I've read thr first four chapters before, but never got round to finishing it.

message 1024: by Hayley (last edited Oct 01, 2011 12:16PM) (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) I am now reading Snowdrops by A.D. Miller - the 4th bleedin' book that's a narrator reminiscing about part of his past - and written that way the whole time so far (seriously, is there an annual theme for MBP shortlist books or what?)

I am going to be reading A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness , my sister said it was good. :D

message 1026: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
Ah, A Monster Calls is the one where he wrote someone else's story that they never got to finish because they sadly passed away, right?

I've been told we have The Shining, but I can't find it. I think we might only have it in his imagination.

I'm reading The Dark Mirror (The Bridei Chronicles, #1) by Juliet Marillier . Having not been able to concentrate all week, it's been really nice to actually be able to get some reading done! I've got another circa 150 pages to go. Then I'll go back to Let the Right One In.

Char (CharmaineElaine) Siobhan Dowd died of breast cancer, it's a shame because she was a stunning writer. I read Solace of the Road by her earlier in the year. I gave it 4 stars.

Lots of good writers seem to be passing away. :( Sara Douglass died of cancer earlier this week. I was gutted when I read that Dick King Smith died in January. It was like a part of my childhood had died with him.

message 1030: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I know! :( It's awful! Wait! What? Dick King Smith died? :'(

message 1031: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
Yes. :( Dick King Smith and Pete Postlethwaite died within days of each other. I was really upset because they were both such influential figures during my childhood. I mean, I must have read most of the King Smith books when I was little (and plan on reading them to my own kids when I have them) and Postlethwaite was Brassed Off (which I watched over and over between the ages of about 7 and 12.)

message 1032: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) That's very sad indeed. Classic children's authors are the best. I mean, Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl, Dick King Smith, they're all in a league of their own.

message 1033: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
Yes but Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl were already long dead by the time I learnt to read. Dick King Smith was one of those presences who you just assume will go on and on and on and never die (you know, like the Queen.)

message 1034: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) That's true, but they're still 2 of the greatest kids writers IMO. I know what you mean. I thought he'd just live until he was 1,000,000 years old. (I know. The Queen just doesn't wanna go.)

message 1035: by Rea, Ghost (new)

True. Precisely! I was pretty sure I'd end up dying before he did. (She doesn't. But then her mum lived to 101 so she could have another 20 years ahead of her!)

message 1036: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I know me too! (That's true. Poor Charles, he'll never make it to the throne. :P)

message 1037: by Varian Rose (new)

Varian Rose I recently finished Angel Fall A Novel by Coleman Luck and thought it was amazing.

My review is short because I couldn't put into words the emotional rollercoaster I went through while reading it. Think C.S. Lewis/J.R.R. Tolken/Stephen King/H.P. Lovecraft.

Next I'll be reading Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers . I know, I know, I mentioned it on the !!Do Not Read This Book!! thread but I can't remember why I hated it so much....

Cate (The Professional Fangirl) (chaostheory08) | 34 comments I'm going back to my historical fiction pile:

Yes, it is dangerous...then again I didn't like Rebecca the first time I tried to read it, then gave it another chance and ended up loving it. I'm hoping the awesomeness of Angel Fall rubs off on Redeeming Love.

message 1044: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm reading Let the Right One In but I have a feeling it's going to get put on the back burner a few times this month. First I was distracted all weekend from it by The Night Circus and tomorrow Silence is going to magically appear in my Kindle inventory because I had it on pre-order from ages ago.

(Char - I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on The Replacement in the favourites challenge btw.)

I'm glad I'm not the only one! I like to know how much of a book I'm looking at and with only a % I don't really have a clear idea. We should mount a campaign to bring back the pages!
