My name is Jason (and I am a book-a-holic), I am 31 and currently live in the nutmeg state.
I am mostly a non-fiction reader, however, as of late I have been rediscovering the classics and having a blast doing so.
I have a degree in music, am a pilot, and professional daydreamer.
I look forward to being a part of the group - please feel free to say hello anytime.

Glad you have you with us!

I am curios of what people read, just to know what drives them and make my own appreciations to those books. You may see on my list that i have such "Oprah Books Club", "1001 Books Before You Die", "NY Times Bestseller".
And surely whenever I have money... I buy books.

I recently went on a splurge to Hay on Wye (the original booktown) and left with a heavily ladened car containing 46 books costing a lovely three figure sum but damn it was worth it. They are now stacked in my living room and are refered to as the Hay Book Tower :-D
And any spare cash I have goes on books, especially in the awesome second hand book store in Castle Arcade here in Cardiff called Troutmark Books. I'm that bad all the books I've read have to go and live at my parents as I don't have enough space in my flat for all of my books hehe

Thanks Jo, oh yea it was fantastic and I didn't feel an ounce of guilt about it either :-D

I never join book challenges though as I like the freedom of being able to read whatever I want, whenever I want, although maybe one day I'll feel disciplined enough to do so! But for 2010, I am giving myself my own challenge: 50 books in 1 year. I'm terribly excited and cannot wait for January to come.
As for the quote on this groups main page...it summarizes me perfectly. My boyfriend often tsk-s me when I spend the last of my pay check on books......but it's oh-so-worth-it!

Like most of you all, I to want a room full of books, with a possible window seat to read books, books and more books! Can't wait to read with you all!

Anyway, I'm the type who's willing to spend money on books, but will save them on clothes and food. My mother despairs of my towering pile of books, while I despair of not having enough time to read all my TBR's, which grows by the second. I think it's bound to grow even taller now that I've found my way here.
Because of this love for books, my friends and I put up a blog to record our reviews and musings on the books we've read. We're called The Raving Readers (http://theravingreaders.blogspot.com) coz we love to rave about books (LOL), though sometimes we can't find it in us to rave about anything, esp if the book is very dull. However, this is countered by the exciting times we have on the blog, with reviews and contests and giveaways. http://tiny.cc/8wBdB

I'm interested in using a ipod to download books from my library - but I'm techno-stupid. Any ideas of what kind of ipod to buy?

I'm currently reading Bloodroot by Amy Green and enjoying everything about it.

My name is Kimberly and I'm a Book-a-holic. In the past month I have bought around 15-20 new books. In the last year I've bought over 200. My room is full of books I get from my favourite used bookstore and Goodwill. I have over 300 books in my bedroom and I always have to be dragged away from the shelves by my fiancee or we'll never leave the bookstore.

Right now I have 4 books that I'm reading (different genres). I read wherever and whenever I can. I'm doing my best to pass my love of books/reading on to my kids. ;)

Unsure of what to make of these instructions I wandered into my sister's room bored and cranky and lay on her bed. I was a fairly obedient child so I started to look for ways to entertain myself as instructed by dad, by hanging my head down over the edge of the bed and waiting until I could feel the rush of blood pooling in my face before jumping to my feet suddenly causing a head rush and dizziness that I would later discover could only be duplicated in certain carnival rides.
In the middle of my third homemade head spin, with my head hanging over the bed and my face beet red, I suddenly spied the corner of a book peeking out under the bedcover, curious I reached out to pull it from its hiding spot.
It was an old torn copy of Ramona the Pest by Beverley Cleary. Now I'd seen my sisters reading novels before but I'd never been interested in following suit and yet at that precise moment I suddenly found myself fascinated by the faded cracked yellow cover and without thinking too much about it (and also because my game was beginning to make me feel slightly quesy) I opened the book up to the first page and lay down to read... and from that moment on I was hooked.
These days the fascination has grown into an obssession, my books spill out of my library shelves in unabashed stacks, they litter my bedroom floor, sit in piles under my bed and cover my dressing drawers and bedside tables. I am drawn into bookstores like an addict, the draw of the bright covers and newly printed pages are cocaine to me, I confess that my addiction isn't restricted to new books, no, I haunt second hand book stores, prowling through book stands at fairs and perusing the dusty shelves at the back of charity shop book sections. Purchasing books is a compulsive and incurable habbit, it has become so bad that without even noticing it I recently discovered I had succeeded in drawing other people's attention to my secret compulsion.
I work in the city and there is a large bookstore between my office and the train station - a dangerous location for a bookaholic to be in I agree. This is a large city bookstore though so you can imagine the number of customers they must see in there. One day a few weeks ago after work I was skulking around the aisles in the book store, possessively eyeing out the books on the shelves I was mentally adding to my 'next purchase' list while I held a few options in front of me considering which I would take home when I suddenly heard someone speaking behind me. Surprised I turned to see a person I presumed (by way of her uniform) worked there and said 'excuse me?' and she repeated her comment, a funny little remark about one of the patrons who was leaving the store. I was a little taken aback since her comment seemed to suggest a strange familiarity with me, as though we were on friendly terms but I could have sworn I had never seen her before. Another coworker of hers who was standing nearby and overheard the comment must have thought the same thing and said curiously 'why are you saying that to her?' (she said pointedly but politely glancing in my direction) and her colleague laughed and said 'oh don't worry about her, she's a VIP member here'
That's right! While I may have thought my frequent skulking down these aisles was hidden in the crowds making their way through the store I had been identified by staff (I couldn't even recall seeing) as an unofficial frequent flyer! At that point even I had to admit I had a problem.
Now I'm off, work is over and I need to get some more miles in! Word to the wise - there is no cure for this affliction!"

I've been a bookaholic since I was in third grade and I've never ceased to carry at least 3 books with me at any given time. It's only been within the last year or two that I've begun to write summaries about the books that I read. It’s the only way to slow me down and also helps me retain the essence of whatever I'm reading or listening to (I love audiobooks now too).

Hey Wes...are you still in Concord? I have family there. Any chance you held on to that used book shop or know of a good one in the area? I love to shop around when I'm visiting places and that would something great to do with my daughter when visit the family.

I once took some of my books to a second-hand bookstore to sell and I walked out of there without having sold any plus $40 worth of new second-hands.
The bedroom I share with my husband is the smallest bedroom in the house because I wanted the space for my books.
Every single employee from every single bookstore in my city know me by name.
If I'm not reading I'm talking about books I've read or books I'm going to read next.
My husband tells me that although I have a problem, he loves me enough to see that I get help and to see that my father pays for what he did to me.
You see, it's my dad's fault I'm such a book worm. Throughout my childhood he worked the craziest hours and would arrive home late at night when I was asleep and be gone before I woke in the morning. It got to the point where the only times I saw him were on his rare days off and he was usually sleeping. Then one night he came home and woke me up, he was dripping wet from the rain and reeked of the docks where he worked and cigarette smoke. In his arms he held a plastic shopping bag, 'Wake up baby, I got something for you' he whispered excitedly. Sitting up so he could sit down next to me he up-ended the bag and out falls hundreds of books (not really but even now my mind tells me there were hundreds of them). All Dr Seuss books.
And so my addiction began...

( at least I hope so ..otherwise I really have a problem):(
looking forward to reading & sharing with others.

There was a great panel at Readercon this month on just this topic. It's great to find an online version.

My name is John Cicero and I am a fantasy/adventure author and yes a book-o-holic. My passion for writing and reading is driven from the joy I receive from reading my stories to my children.
Watching the expressions on their faces as I take them on a journey through the magical pages of my imagination is what drives me to find the time to write.
My recently released novels are in the Rainbow's Shadow Trilogy. They are Rainbow’s Shadow and the Tablets of Fate and Rainbow’s Shadow and the Covenant of Wisdom.
As a passionate writer in Northeast, Ohio I have been fortunate to hit the Best Sellers list with 'Tablets of Fate' and am on track currently with the 'Covenant of Wisdom'.
The final novel in my trilogy is Rainbow’s Shadow and the Other Side of Paradise which is currently in development.
If you have a moment check out my website and Rainbow's Shadow Trilogy today at... www.RainbowsShadow.com
Take care, John

I'm Mariella and I'm a book-a-holic!
I have so many books it's not funny and my sister will not let me pass by a bookshop when we go out shopping because she knows that's were I'll get stuck. I would go crazy without a book in my life, and at the most desperate times, they have truly saved my life.

Robbin: A kindred soul! I'm the same way. But hubby doesn't say anything. Maybe because my reading pile isn't in plain sight. I also have a room filled with boxes of books, a pile of newspapers on my nightstand, and tons of magazines.
I was just at the library on Saturday and, in addition to my reserves, picked up a ton of impromptus off the "new books" shelf and the shelving carts. It was a great haul. Yes, it's an addiction of sorts but a harmless one.
And, I'm reading 4 right now.

Yes, it's an addiction of sorts but a harmless and economical one.
I'm reading 4 right now.

Lisa - #42 - I think we are both in the same boat:) and perhaps sinking and bailing like mad due to the weight of soooooo many books :-D

Anyways, this group seems like a lot of fun. I like being around like minded people :0)

I'm a Massage Therapist and a painter, but I think "avid reader" should be a profession too,
My library card and I are best friends, and (just between you and me) the massage table and my paint brushes are pretty jealous. I'm thinking I have too many hobbies.
Thanks for starting this group- I look forward to seeing what everyone else is reading!

I do that very well, in the form of Audiobooks and E-book downloads. I have 5 books on my currently reading list and my to read is growing daily.
As far as the frequent-reader program...I too
have been guilty of that.
I used to work in a mall and there was a large bookstore downstairs that used to hold books for me
until payday. My bookhold got so large that I soon had my own shelf under the counter.

Wes, your site caught my eye because I live in Concord. (And, like I said, I'm a book-aholic.)
