Francisco (fr4nc15c0d14z) | 5 comments Hi Wes and everyone. My name is Francisco, I am 24. I am a book-a-holic. It all started in seventh grade... and a little over a decade later books still fascinate me. Good luck Wes! I used to write a lot, but something happened and now I read more than I write. I would like to read your story.

message 102: by Kristen (new)

Kristen | 1 comments Hello all! My name is Kristen and I am a Book-a-holic!
I have been in love with reading as far back as I can remember, and while I get into a rut here and there of what I will and will not read, I always come back to the cheesy romance novels that so many people scoff! I like mostly fiction, because non fiction is too much like real life and I read to escape!

message 103: by Gina (new)

Gina (grcollia) Hello everyone :o)

My name's Gina and I'm a book-a-holic. I don't just love reading books, I love sniffing them, holding them, and carrying large numbers around with me when I go out. There are books under my bed, in my wardrobe, under furniture, on top of furniture, and if I buy many more we'll have to move into the garage to give them room to grow. I have never been to Amazon and come away without buying something.

I am unrepentant though, and don't ever want to be cured. I might just need a bigger house.

message 104: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Ashman | 1 comments Hi Wes,
I am Sarah and I am a bookaholic. I always carry a book in my bag and I don't go a day without reading something. I think about what I'm going to read next loads, more than alot of stuff i think about....

message 105: by d4 (new)

d4 Hi, my name is dara, and I love me some books. ;)

I don't buy them much anymore; instead I visit 3 different libraries routinely. I'm currently reading Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Also, I've been reading a lot of older books lately.

message 106: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jenna_l) | 3 comments Hello, I'm Jennifer, and I'm a book-a-holic. I'm 31 as of TODAY, and have always read several books concurrently and always have gotten 6-15 books out of the library at a time. I'm so glad to know that nothing is wrong with me and that there are so many others out there who LOVE TO READ in a country where I feel that people don't read enough! :-)

message 107: by Lausº (new)

Lausº (laus) Hi my name is Laura and I am a Book-Aholic..... and proud of it.
Last year I tried to leave this drug and nearly go crazy ... Im 23 years and most of my friends are not fond of reading so Im glad to find so many people who share this addiction. Greetings from México!

Mandy | 1 comments Hi my name is Mandy, I'm 27, and I USED to be a Bookaholic. =P Really, when I was a kid, that's all I wanted to do since the time I learned how to read when I was 6. My brother used to complain that me being sent to my room wasn't really a punishment, b/c I'd just go in there and read. ;)

In my adult life, I suppose my love of books got drowned out by so many other things. =\ But now I am ready to remember my passion for reading and hopefully participate in some good discussions.

Take care all!

message 109: by LarLar (new)

LarLar (larlar91) I am Karien and I am a boo-a-holic. I finally feel at home. I am a compulsive reader and will read everything - cereal boxes, tomato sauce bottles, etc. but mostly I read books. Like Lisa I'm not much of a housekeeper - who wants to clean when you can read.

I always feel ashamed about my reading, normal people read about 2 books a month, I read about 4 books a week...other people read to relax, I read to cope with life.

message 110: by Nate (new)

Nate Kenyon (nate_kenyon) | 2 comments Hi, I'm Nate, and I'm a book-a-holic. I'm also a writer (you have to be a voracious reader to be a writer, IMO). I have about 100 books on my TBR pile, and people keep giving me more! Of course I buy them all the time too...I think I have a problem. :)

Love Goodreads--and this group!

message 111: by Amy (new)

Amy Hi all, I'm Amy and I've been a book-a-holic since I read books under the covers with a torch so that my parents wouldn't come in and tell me off for not being asleep! I can't remember the last time I managed to leave a bookstore without buying something, and I can happily lose myself in libraries for hours.

It's wonderful to find a site and group with so many like-minded people, who don't make me feel like I'm completely dull for loving books :)

message 112: by Nikki (new)

Nikki | 4 comments Hi Wes and group, I'm Nikki, and I'm a book-a-holic and have been since I learned how to read.

message 113: by Nate (new)

Nate Kenyon (nate_kenyon) | 2 comments Welcome, Nikki! What are you reading now?

message 114: by Ann (new)

Ann (annsmith) Hello everyone. I'm Ann and I am PROUD to say that I am a bookaholic. I constantly have a book in my possession. I can't walk past a bookstore without going in and buying some books. I just love the smell of books and the feel of the pages between my fingers.

Since I'm such a book lover, back in 2002 I started a book club in Philadelphia for individuals with the same addiction. Presently, we have 18 bookaholics!

I'm happy to see that I'm not alone. Happy Reading!

message 115: by Shruti (new)

Shruti Hi. I'm Shruti, and I'm a book-a-holic. I'm only thirteen, but for my age I am a big book-a-holic.

message 116: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (katymac55) Hi. I never really comment on these discussions but whatever. I love books. I'm a writer like that other guy up there. I was looking on my bank statements the other day and I saw that I had been to Barnes and noble three times in three weeks. And whenever i go there, it is like a two hour session. I try not to think of all the other productive things that I could have been doing when I'm at Barnes and Noble. But hey, you have to feed the addiction right. I haven't been able to read a lot lately because i have been working on writing another project, but I'm trying to find a balance. I just can't write something good and be reading a novel in the same day. Anyone else have that problem? A solution? Cause I'm stumpped. I hate having to choose sides.

message 117: by Alycia (new)

Alycia (alyciac) Hi, my name is Alycia and I'm a book-a-holic. I was laughing as I read these posts, as I could have written many of them. I've got books stacked in every corner of my house, the book cases are overflowing and my husband thinks I'm crazy. I read mostly science fiction and mysteries but in a pinch will read non-fiction, romances, backs of cereal boxes and old magazines.

message 118: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey (swimmingseraph) | 3 comments Hi everyone, I'm Kelsey and I'm a HUGE book-a-holic. Even though I have little to no free time, I still spend an inordinate amount of time every week reading and looking for more books. It's a never-ending cycle I'm actually happy to stay in!

message 119: by Jean (new)

Jean Hello to All. My name is Jean and I am a Book-A-holic.I can remember getting my first library card in the 50s and checking out all of the books that were allowed. I have been an avid reader every since. I buy books, get them from the library, borrow friends books, and select books from the library in my senior complex. I love, love, love to read and believe that I will enjoy getting selection ideas from this group.

message 120: by Jen B (new)

Jen B (jennybee618) Hi everyone. I'm Jen, and I'm definitely a book-a-holic. At current count I have 143 unread books on my shelf. I'm trying to read 101 of them before buying any more, but my willpower is weak when it comes to Barnes & Noble and PaperBackSwap! I grew up in a house that was filled with books, and I want my son to do the same (his book collection already rivals mine, and he's only 2 1/2). I look forward to being part of this group.

message 121: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Cain | 1 comments Hello Kindred Spirits. I'm Jenn and I too am a book-a-holic. I teach middle school. I am not only addicted to me grown-up books. I read my students books too. Reading has always been an addiction. Like all things, I must blame my mother. I remember getting a new Golden Book every week at the grocery store as a child. My favorite trips were to the library. I buy books as Christmas presents but have to read them first. I look forward to sharing my addiction.

message 122: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 8 comments Hi All! I am Vicki aka AuntieV and I am yet another book-a-holic. I hope I do not get kicked out of the group because I love paperbacks, audio books and cookbooks. (I read them just like a novel.)

I read or listen to books everywhere. At one point I even had a bookcase in my bathroom. To me there is nothing more relaxing than a good soak in the tub with a good book in hand.

I live in a small mountain town without a library so I am forced into buying my books to support my habit. At this time my genre of choice is mystery/suspense books but I dabble in Southern Fiction and Art History from time to time.

Auntie V, how do you read in the tub? Either you have some mad skill or I am somehow challenged. one time I took a book into the tub to read and i dropped it in. I spent the next hour trying to get the pages apart and blow dry them so I could finish it.

message 124: by Erin (new)

Erin (avarice) | 2 comments Hi, I'm Erin and I am most definitely a Book-aholic.

I'm 38 years old, married for a second time, have two adult sons (and two grandchildren) and one step-child at home. I also have three cats, two ferrets, and a dog. I worked in the computer industry for the past 14 years, but lost my job last April. I have a degree in Communications and hope to find something in that field, now that I'm free to pursue it.

But, despite all that, I read constantly. If I don't have a book in hand, then I am listening to one on my MP3 player. My husband has forbidden me to enter a bookstore again because I never leave a bookstore without spending over $100. My local library will actually call me if they haven't seen me in a couple of days...just to make sure I am ok.

Most of the time I feel very isolated because neither of my sons inherited my love of reading and I have yet to find anyone around me to share this interest.

On a side note, Kathryn, I read in the tub too. It's not that difficult. There are bathtub accessories that can assist you in the endeavor if you have a hard time keeping the book out of the water (i.e. bathtub pillows and trays).

message 125: by Laura (new)

Laura (questionableadvice) Hi, I'm Laura and I'm a bookaholic. In fact, I've gone hardcore and it doesn't even have to be a "traditional" book anymore. I'll take an audiobook, a short story from a circa 1900's women's magazine or, if all else fails, an instruction manual for some gadget I don't even own anymore.

Yes, it's sad.

Looking back, I can see that I was doomed from an early age: when I was nine my dream was to own all the Nancy Drew books then published, in matching yellow hardback, and have them all lined up in order on a shelf in my bedroom. In addition to reading them over and over I just wanted to be able to run my hand up and down the line of them.

Now that I've written it, that's actually kind of embarrassing to admit.

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) Hi. I'm Randi, and I'm a book-a-holic. My mother is also a book-a-holic, but she doesn't seem to know it yet. I have a bookcase of books, most of which are unread. My main problem right now is my TBR list. Unfortunately, there are over 3,000 books on it. I am trying to whittle it down as much as I can.

message 127: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (reedreads) | 5 comments My name is Kathy and I'm a book-a-holic. Books cover every available space in my house, including much of the floor. I have bookshelves in my closets. My car is full of audiobooks and I have three books in my purse right now.
Fiction and sci fi/fantasy make up the bulk of my reading, but I will take on anything that sounds interesting, history, sociology, natural science, biography, memoir...
Nice to meet you.

Julia Trotter Hi, I'm Julia and I'm a book-a-holic, I was born one and will die one. I read whenever the opportunity arises and am know to always have 2 or 3 books on my person almost all the time. Some of my favorite things in the world are the smell of a bookstore and the sound when you open a new book and the spine cracks. ;)

Maybe you could consider your TBR list a goal. :)

message 131: by Cheemoandia (new)

Cheemoandia (Misscrb) | 6 comments Hello, my name is Peaches and I am a book-aholic. I need help, either I need to take off a year from work so I can read all of my books, or I need to hire someone to read them to me when I don't feel like reading. I am in the process of moving, and I have so many books to move. Everyone has helped with the move and the only items left are my books, everyone keep saying "Who's moving all those books?" LOL, I guess I will, just take a little at a time.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Hello, my name is Elizabeth, and I'm a book-aholic. Until coming here, I didn't know there were others who like the smell of books. Being a boomer (well, only 6 weeks older than the "official" boomers) we usually got new books in school. I loved the first few days of school when you could open the new books and just breathe in the smell of ink. Anyway, of course I like to read them too, and I learned you don't have to have a new book to like them. Old, new, borrowed, blue - oops, wrong theme. I'm a fiction reader, and I don't care much for sci-fi, fantasy, or series, but I'm pretty much open to everything else. Looking forward to sharing.

message 133: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 9 comments Hello everyone=]
I am Jasmine and I am 14, and a total book-a-holic. I am pretty young, but that doesn't mean I don't appriciate books as much as any adult. In my free time I somtimes browse B&N and amazon. It's annoying how much love reading because when I go on vacations I have to have at least 3 books minimum with me, even if I'm only leaving for a week. My mom gets really annoyed because I constantly buy books, instead of taking them out from the libray..I think I have an addiction to buying books...=D

message 134: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) Hi. I'm Randi, and I am a book-a-holic. I love books. I also love to write. I read when I'm not on GR or out and about.

message 135: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (sunniedayup) Hi Wes, I too am a book-a-holic. I have three small children and a loving husband who is very supportive of my addiction and allows me to get my fixes as much as possible! I went through some serious withdrawal with my youngest daughter being a miserable baby who did not need sleep just my two arms to hold her continuosly. However, she passed that stage and is now almost 4 and on her way to becoming a Book-a-holic herself! So now I read whenever I get half a chance, and sometimes there is nothing better than all my family sitting around our den, and all our noses poked into a great book! I also feel the compulsion to stop at any estate sale, used book store, thrift shop -you name it where there is the possibility of books lying around and I invariably leave with a new pile of books to add to my already overflowing bookshelves. I somehow take great comfort in looking at my shelves, stuffed with books I can't wait to explore and knowing that I will never be without a good book to read.

message 136: by LJ (new)

LJ (ljroberts) Hi Peaches and welcome,

I moved a few years ago and had 76 boxes of books, all packed by me. And that's after I had sold, donated or given away about 1/2 of my books. The movers weren't very happy but that's what they get paid for. :-)

Good luck with the move,
LJ

Happy Birthday, Jennifer!! You sound like me, I go to the library every chance I get and always come away with a stack of borrowed books as well as a stack I've bought from the used book shelves. I haunt my local used bookstores and love, love, love seeing my overflowing bookshelves. I am definitly a Book-a-holic too!

message 141: by Hilda (new)

Hilda Hernandez (shadowinthetwilight) | 3 comments Hello, I'm Hilda and I'm a BOOK-A-HOLIC. I have run out of room for my books and have started to store them in really big bins at my friend's home (sorry >_<). I have more books than I could possibly read and yet find myself continuing to buy more books. I am always reading. I read magazines, cereal boxes, posters at the doctor's office, advertisement on the bus, etc. I would rather not eat and lose major sleep than stop reading. Especially if it's a really good book or part of a series that I MUST continue reading. I can become very obsessive over books. I borrow books from my roommate even though I'm already reading 3. I get pretty sucked into a story that I am oblivious to anything else. Don't even try to talk to me because it would be like trying to talk to a wall. Regardless of the amount of books I own and refuse to sell/donate, I will continue to buy more!! ^_^

Shari | 3 comments Hi everyone, my name is Shari, and I am a BOOK-A-HOLIC! So glad to know there are so many of us out there. I am very fortunate that my husband, although not a big reader himself, supports my habit. He actively encourages me to buy more books! I used to work in a bookshop, so you can imagine the temptation. Unfortunately my obsession makes me very unwilling to SHARE my books... most people do not give them back. Grrrr

message 143: by Wen (new)

Wen (thespoilingone) | 3 comments Hi My name is Wen and I am for a certainty a book-aholic. I laughed when I saw the name of this group then was pleasantly surprised to see so many on here and that I am not alone in my passion for reading.
Of course I come by it honestly. My mom is a big book a holic too (though she reads them just one at a time to my 3-6 at a time). My dad is a trivia hound and lovs history/religion/mythology and so on and so on. In fact my dad just published his first book several months back. SO I dont think there was a chance of my NOT being a book aholic.
I have infected my 16 yo son with the same illness and he is bad as I am in reading several books at once.
Right now am reading The Many Lives and Secret Sorrows of Josephine B. by Sandra Gulland, Second Touch by Bodie & Brock Thoene, LEt the Night Begin by Kathryn Smith and The Day Venus Exploded by Steve Preston (my daddys book).
I have bookselves in just about every room in the house and storage boxes under the bed and other spots where I can put them all of books.
I am so happy to be here with others like me.
Happy reading!!

I'm currently trying to finish up Diana Gabaldon's Outlander Series, I'm finally halfway through with book #5, The Fiery Cross then I'm off to read something from my growing shelf of books to read. Eenie, meenie, miny, moe....

message 147: by Tom (last edited May 18, 2009 04:24AM) (new)

Tom (tommyro) My name is Tom and I am a book-aholic, happy to find out so many other people share my love of books.

Fortunately, my loving wife is totally understanding. She's a reader too, but not as obsessive as I am.

She bought me the tee-shirts that say, 'There's no such thing as too many books' and 'Too many books, too little time' or something like that since I put it on and can only read it backwards in the mirror.

She also bought me a lot of very large bookcases so I can NEATLY store my 1000 books (instead of piling them everywhere), of which, I am happy to say, I've only read about half since there are still so many great books to read.

I don't think WE have a problem. When I walk in peoples' homes and do not see a book, I think they're the ones with the problem.

Socrates didn't get it right. It's not that an unexamined life isn't worth living, it's more that an unread life isn't worth living.

My only regret in life is that I've already read Crime and Punishment, Jane Eyre, Madame Bovary etc. etc. so I could read them all for the first time again.

message 148: by Ann (new)

Ann Noell (fantasyannie) My name is Annie and I'm a book-aholic. I love to read and I love to buy books. I have a ton at home but I'm still at the books store buying more.

I can sit and read all day long or all night lol.. reading does not put me to sleep. I have friends that say they read a little before bed and it puts them to sleep. I have to make myself put the book down or I'm up all night. Does anyone else have that problem?

Barb (dewbie) | 4 comments Hi. My name is Barb and yes, I'm a bookaholic. I have a library card but just can't bring myself to bring home a book that I can't keep. I buy most of my books at Sams Club and Costco and Borders 'cause I have a AARP card which gives me 10% discount. Can't beat that for adding to my passion. I'm glad to be in a group where I can openly discuss my obsession. Barb D
