Sandi Lewis | 1 comments I am a bookaholic and proud of it!! I love mysteries, historicals, and family sagas. Of course this does not stop me from reading other types of genres. I have lots of books at home--I need books around me to feel complete.

I go to the library every week (I'm a volunteer) and check out what has come in that I might be interested in reading. These go on my list. I've been going to the library since I started to read as a child. I just love going up and down the shelves and will pick up a book to check out if it sounds interesting.

And bookstores!! I love to see what's new and what might be on sale.

Of course, friends and family think I'm a little over the top on books and reading, but who do they go to to see if I have read it? and is it good?

Sandi

Ellenjsmellen | 1 comments Hi my name is Ellen and I'm a book-a-holic. I've been one now for over 30 years. I read contemporary on the best seller lists. I read my favorite authors until their well is dry. I read chick lit, children's books and whatever my mother tells me to read. Always listen to mom.
I write a column called Good Reads in my local mom's club newsletter and have been for almost 4 years now. If I'm almost finished one book, I make sure I have a back up or I get the shakes like a junkie. Lots of great suggestions from my fellow Goodreaders on this site.

Katie_marie (dapperdame) | 3 comments Hello Wes, and fellow book-aholics!

My name is Katie. I have always chosen books over most other things (although I can tear myself away for good people!). I wake up earlier than I need to so that I can read before going to work (and if you knew how precious sleep was to me). My boyfriend is a Librarian but I think I could challenge his love for books. I get them at garage sales typically and just can't part with any of them. Many conversation attempts are based on books and I long for someone I can discuss my reads for hours. My love runs deep.

Welcome to the group...

TheReadingKnitter/ Kasey (thereadingknitter) My name is Kasi and I love books. I always have a book to read. I actually rarely buy books only because I have little storage space and little $$ to buy any. I always go to the library though. Last week I had one book left from my previous trip so I had to go and get more. Anyhow, nice to meet everyone!

Pamela (pcniles) | 4 comments Hi. My name is ~furyu (aka 'Pam') and I am a hopelessly happy, and active bookaholic. I have no intentions of ever recovering."

["Hi, Furyu!"]

I come here by way of a friend who invited me to GoodReads quite recently and who is also a hopelessly happy bookaholic. Like most of you here, my book addiction began when I was quite young, with Grimm Brothers, Hans Christian Andersen and later the Bronte sisters whetting my taste for all things literary. Like all addictions, mine has grown progressively... greater.

Currently my library houses 2,215 books, not including a hundred or so cookbooks which I have yet to catalog. Yes, catalog. I keep an Excel spreadsheet that lists every book I come to possess. Or should I say, every book that comes to possess me? My husband and I have recently decided we must insure this library but if anything were ever to happen to it, no amount of money could ever replace it. I would be inconsolable. But replace it I would try. (Come to think of it, that'd be a lot of fun!)

Not a day goes by that I don't discover and then covet some book, perhaps a new title, or an old out-of-print book, and rarely does a week pass that I don't add one, or two or three... to my ever expanding library. I read them all, sooner or later, in part or in whole. Many I return to over and over again.

Because of this, I am faced with a 'real estate' dilemma: where to put them all. About two years ago, my husband and I converted one bedroom into a library with built in wooden shelves from ceiling to floor around the entire room, even over the door opening. Many of the shelves are solidly stacked already, and we face a grim future of not one more inch of shelf space. We have options, of course: add on an additional room to our current home, or move to a larger home with larger convertible bedrooms. Culling is out of the question.

I was delighted to find this website, and all the like-minded individuals here. And now to find a group of self-admitted bookaholics! Things just keep getting better and better.

I haven't added to my list here many of the books I've read over the years, but little by little I'll include them all. Time permitting. After all, time spent on the computer is time spent away from my books.

I'm glad to be here. I look forward to getting to know many of you. And I like to thank Wes for starting this much needed 'support' group.

Be well read,

~furyu

Garfield | 1 comments Hi, my name is garfield(aka Evi) and I am a book-aholic. And so relieved to know I am not alone. I thought I was the only one suffering from this disease, well not the only one as I have a couple of friends that seem to have the same problem. Does this mean it's contagious???
My Dad was a book dealer, I've worked at a bookstore, need I say more. I have a small library building and every room in our house is stuffed with books as well. Every surface is littered with books. I am constantly scanning the rooms to see if there is another little nook for more books. Do you get the picture???? Pretty scary, isn't it? Thankfully my husband not only understands this disease, he supports me by building more places to put my books. Every time I go to town I promise myself, no books today. But everytime I see a bookstore or any place that sells books I hear the siren song "Buy me, I need a good home". I don't know where it will all end. Or do I even want it to????

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) Hi, my names Kirsty and I'm a bookaholic! I've always loved reading, but got into a lull where I wasn't reading as much as I once did, then I found goodreads, and it re-sparked my flame, and now I can't get enough. I'm not in any profession linked to books, I just love to read!

Have seen friend's comments in this group on my update feed and it seems like a cool place to be!

message 60: by Jim (new)

Jim | 112 comments books are like people and vice versa
open them up and see what's inside

also books give You perspective on human beings interacting in different situations where some ring true/not true

thus when out with people, You may have an idea from reading what motivates some one to act a certain way and also provides a possible source for communication that gives You insight on whether You should stay out with someone or go home and read where You and the author/characters are interacting

message 61: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) Hi, I'm Mindy and I am SUCH a book-aholic, but I totally think that's a GREAT thing. I adore books, reading them, accumulating them, and collecting antique ones. Beyond their literary power, I love books as OBJECTS. To be in a room filled with books is like valium for me. I ran out of bookshelf space a long time ago, and even though my books are in sprawling stacks all over my apartment, I still can't go by the "free books" table in our department, or a 25¢ table at a yardsale, or the used books sale at the library, without picking SOMETHING up. I will never, ever finish my to-read list b/c I just keep adding more to it. I'm seriously considering taking speed-reading lessons. Has anyone tried that yet? Does it work? I worry that if I read faster I wouldn't "feel" the book as much...

Look forward to getting to know everyone!
M

Noran Miss Pumkin | 1 comments hi, my name is noran, and i am a book-aholic for 43 years. i am only 46 years old. my mother started me early and she was one too. my father was only a reader. my oldest brother is a comic addict. used books over new every time. i go to borders and come out with lists to hunt for. tight now i am surrounded by hundreds of my friends. my toddler virginia, who stole my cap keys, had three shelves of books awaiting her at birth and several boxes more as she ages. i mean have you seen the prices on chilren books?! i love them too and so did my mother. since vir came though, i had to get rid of 500 books last years, and more to follow this year i fear--hubby says if i want more.

Rachel | 14 comments Hi, my name is Rachel and I'm a book-a-holic. Whew. Felt good to get that one off my chest. I read anything offered to me, like signs, papers, dictionaries. But I also read like an addict. Especially during the summer. Check out my book list and see if we have drugs of choice in common!

Shanan (yogimommy) I'm Shanan and I am a book-aholic. Like many others in this group, my husband doesn't understand my books but he accepts them. Of course he doesn't actually know how many books I own because I still have a lot at my dad's house. :)

message 65: by Bluedaizy (new)

Bluedaizy | 12 comments Hi, my name is Michele, and yes, I am a bookaholic. Not only do I love to read, but I collect books. I have over 2000 volumes. My mother goes to garage sales and will buy me 5 copies of the same book (not all at the same time), but I can not bear to part with any of the extra copies, even if I don't plan to read them. I love the smell of musty old books. I love the crispness of a new binding. I fall asleep reading a book and I wake up reading a book. I eat my meals with a book. If I go to a restaurant, I'm referred to as "that book lady".

There is no way I can go into a book shop and buy just one book. If I run into a Walmart or Target for some household supply, what's the first area I go to? You guessed it. The books.

The only activity that will drag me away from my beloved books is (drum roll, please) the computer. I really consider it my interactive book as I read so much on here and learn something new and interesting every day.

My idea of heaven? Wall to wall books, a nifty fast computer with mega memory, and a maid. Who has time to clean with all this reading???

message 66: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 3 comments Hi...my name is Lynn...and I'm a book-a-holic.

It's my mother's fault! When we were kids, we spent most of the summer in the library...we could check out as many books as we liked. I vividly remember the day I got my first library card! My home book collection is good-sized and eclectic.

I recently bought an Amazon Kindle and now I have an entire library with me wherever I go.

My husband makes fun of me, but at least it keeps me out of trouble! He's never been a big reader, but he loves TV...if he's watching something boring to me I'll just sit and read.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Hi Wes and everyone else

I'm Boof and I'm a Bookahoic too. There is nothing better than spending a few glorious hours in a book shop drooling over all the gorgeous books I still have to read. I'm like a kid in a sweet shop.

So glad I found you lot - my husband thought I was weird!

I can spend hours in a bookstore. My boyfriend doesnt understand my compulsion for books & reading. When I bring more books into the house he says "now where are you gonna put those!?" lol He also always asks "why dont you trade them in?" I could never part w/ my books! I like to read a little bit of everything. What I read really just depends on my mood.

message 69: by Tisha (new)

Tisha Hi my name is Tisha and I am a book-a-holic. I currently own 23 books i havent read yet. I just joined Goodreads and already find myself browsing books and adding them to my to-read list. I do the same thing on literary guild and barnes&noble.com only i add them to the cart or wish list until i order chunks at a time. I do this despite the fact i havent even read all of the books from my last order!

I carry my book around with my laptop or purse and read it anytime i get a few moments or when I'm waiting. (dr.s office, at the DMV, at lunch, during commercial breaks during my favorite shows! etc)

I just purchased 2 new large bookcases!

Glad to be a member of the group!

Hi Everyone.
My name is Always and I'm a book-a-holic. It all started when I was a kid. I first got hooked on Stephen King but he wasn't enough. Then came The Anthologies, so I could discover more writers like Bentley Little & Richard Laymon, Joe R. Lansdale, Dennis Lehane, and that's only if I could find it in the library or the stores. Now my tastes are shifting to the independent publishers out there, like Cemetery Dance, BadMoon Books,Delirium Books, Permuted Press, Croatoan Publishing, Dorchester/Leisure Book Club! ...... Sorry. I get a little excited thinking about it.
Thank You

message 71: by Jan (new)

Jan Hi, my name is Jan and I am a book-a-holic. I also married a book-a-holic. I have an entire carton of books I haven't read yet. We have four floor to ceiling bookcases in the downstairs, 3 upstairs for leather bound books and first editions, one for very old books (over 100 years) and my husband's office is lined with bookcases and technical books. I don't even plan on moving as the thought of boxing up all those books makes me crazy. If we need more room, I cull out those books I don't feel "attached" to and donate them to the library or give them to friends. I read constantly and consider that vice to be very rewarding. I love my grandchildren dearly and also consider them my ticket to children's books and have a whole shelf of Silverstein, Seuss and other favorites. I am a big fan of the library, frequent resale shops for their books, and don't even get me started on Amazon! I'll probably die with my face in a book!

My name is Santhie and i'm a Bookaholic from Indonesia ^_^
as i recall i always love books since in my early days. my mom always says that i prefer to stay at home and read than playing around with my sister or friends.
and since few recent years i've started to collect books - new ones, old ones, second-hand ones - to build my own library in my room ^_^.

as Marcus Tullius Cicero cited (pick it from goodreads quotes hehehe):
"A room without books is like a body without a soul."

ok, happy reading everyone!

Shelly (dreamstonone) | 1 comments Hi everyone. My name is Shelly and I'm a bookaholic. I have too many to-be read books on my bookshelf and I am trying to make myself not get anymore until I read the batch I have. (This is of course, easier said then done). There are so many great books out there waiting to be read. I read a lot but due to my addiction, my to-be read pile never seems to decrease. I would love nothing more than to not have to work and be able to read all day. :)

Val Nichols | 14 comments Hey there. My name is Val and I am PROUD to be a bookaholic. I was just introduced to this website by a good friend of mine and I am thrilled to have others with whom to talk about what I'm reading/have read. I love the quote for this group, as I saw that over 20 years ago on a bookmark and took that as my motto. If I could, all I would do all day long is read whatever I can get my hands. I haven't read all of the previous posts, but I see many of you commenting on the lack of reading by many people. I never could understand that. My oldest daughter (12) went through a non-reading stage (gasp!) and I kept saying that I couldn't believe a daughter of mine wouldn't want to read! Luckily she's back on the bandwagon and so my youngest daughter and I have another person to go to the library with! Yea!

Kerry (kerrythorne) Hi, my name is Seanachie and I'm a book-a-holic. I do foolish things like go to the Salvation Army and fill my cart with books becaues so many things look good to me. I love to have a new pile of books to consider and I can be found driving through my neighbhorhood placing my finished favorite books in mailboxes so that my friends can read them too.

I love to read books and I love to pass books on!

message 82: by Val (new)

Val Nichols | 14 comments Hey, Seanachie! I think filling up a cart with books from Salvation Army isn't foolish at all! And I'm so impressed with the way you share your books. I oftentimes give some of my favorite books to family as gifts, but I must admit it isn't easy for me to part with them. I've only been able to do that recently, too. Prior to that I would have to get them their own copy so I could keep all my books, all to myself. Now THAT is foolish!

message 83: by Spencer (new)

Spencer (spencerafreeman) Hi, My name is Anastasia and I am an extreme bookaholic.
I have been reading ever since I got through Cat and the Hat on my own when I was little. Whenever I got in trouble, my mother used to punish me not by taking away the tv or phone, but by telling me I couldnt read!
I cannot enter a bookstore without perusing the aisles and lingering over which books I "HAVE" to have. I go in to Borders so often they know my face, which is good business for them, but embarrassing for me. Not only do I love to read, but I love to collect books. There's just something about owning a book and permanently having it in your possession (even if it sits unread on the shelf for months at a time) that gives my life purpose. I've tried libraries and I used to frequent them often, but when I started compiling late fees just because I couldn't dare to part with the book (even though I had finished it days before) I figured it was time to take a break from libraries and switch to more self-gratifying bookstores.
My friends call me a nerd because I read so much, but what they fail to realize is that the books I read are filled with characters far more interesting than them.

message 84: by jennifer (new)

jennifer (mascarawand) | 27 comments Hi, I'm Jennifer and I realized some years ago that I had a problem. I had stacks of books, some two and three feet high, taking up an empty spare room in the house. I had filled two bookcases, the mantel and had more books under the nightstand. I couldn't stop myself.
Luckily, my husband is supportive. When I mentioned how I loved seeing photos of libraries in interior decorating magazines, he called in a contractor and now I have a whole room for my "special problem". Does this make him an enabler?

message 85: by Spencer (new)

Spencer (spencerafreeman) Jennifer
not at all! I've lusted over having my own personal library, and I think it was sweet and understanding of your husband to build you something you desperately needed. Besides, it only SEEMED like a "problem" because the books had no where to live... now they have their own special place, thus making them fit in with everything else in your house!
Lucky you!

Redlilly24 | 3 comments Hi Wes and Everyone,

My name is Lilly and I am most definitely a book-aholic.
I absolutely love to read, its like a drug to me. I love getting lost in books, and discovering other worlds and ideas through other peoples vewing lense. I joined goodreads in hopes of finding suggestions for good books and people to discuss books with.
I love old books in a sense of how they look, there is something mysterious, and delicious in holding a book that is a bit frayed. What can I say I like the written word, and what its contained in. Its nice to join this group, and its nice to meet you all, thanks.

Kelley Phillips (blackbird107) | 1 comments Hello my name is Kelley and I'm a Book-a-holic. I have a true problem because I cannot walk into a bookstore without buying at least 2 if not 5 books at a time. I know what you are going to say...go to the library but I really can't just borrow books. I need them. I need a library of my own. I call it a "Belle complex". I just moved into my own apartment and the first thing my mother said was "good now take all your books". But not having the book I want when I feel like reading it bothers me and I love to reread my books. Something my father doesn't understand.

Angie I'm going to look into that Amazon.com card. It sounds wonderful.

Donna (dfiggz) Hello, my name is Donna and I am a book-aholic.

I can't stop buying books or taken them out of the library. I have 4 bookshelf and one at work and yet they are still piling up in my house! Good thing I am going to school for Library Science or I might ever know what to do with them. I could neer get rid of them or re-sell thme. I would love to open up a used book store in my neighborhood. I think it would be perfect where I live in NYC(Right on the beach)

I need to pay bills instead of creating them but what fun is in that??

Laurel-Rain | 5 comments Hi, my name is Laurel-Rain and I, too, am a book-aholic! When I moved, I had to have several separate boxes for the books I'd bought but hadn't read yet...just so I wouldn't get them mixed in with all the OTHER books I own! I have stacks beside my bed and on a separate shelf next to the TV.

It is an addiction, because just when I tell myself that I'm not buying anymore until I read the ones I have, I am lured into a bookstore...sometimes by grandkids!...and when I walk out, I have at least one book!

What is there to do? LOL.

message 91: by Christina (new)

Christina (honey1977) Hi Angie,
you´re kind of lucky, if its just ya husaband who thinks you´re crazy about buying lots of books. I moved to a new appartement a few weeks ago and all of my friends groaned about the large amount of books (about 500, I guess) they had to carry! I was forced to invite every single one of them for supper to make them smile again ;)! So don´t worry: There are a lots of us BOOK-A-Holics and we all have to struggle with the "non-reading"-community!

Kc | 1 comments Hi my name is KC and I am a book-aholic and have no interest in recovery. I ran across this site today. I have been an avid reader since middle school and became nearsighted in grad school due to all the reading I am sure. A few years ago I started collecting leather bound classics and had over 30 boxes of books when I moved recently. I see many things about newer books which I try to avoid because I have many of the "1001 books to read before you die" that need my attention...not to mention the Britannica "Great Books." I am considering going to the local Half Price Books even now....the price of gas is helping a little. Oh, I have never seen that quote but it is great! I really like a list I found "why books are better than babies"...no offense to the parents out there.

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) Hi my name is Lauren and I'm a bookaholic. I read a lot when I was younger and now I'd rather read than eat sometimes. I am just fascinated by the knowledge and entertainment that books bring to my life. I enjoy reading all types of books: fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, classics... you name it, I probably want to read it. I have bought twelve books this summer and I'm on my 7th one. But classes just started back up, so I'm trying to hurry and finish the one I'm on. Working part time and going to school full time doesn't leave much room for reading. :-(

Lisa (glinda) | 3 comments I am Lisa and I am a book-a-holic. I am addicted to other things too but I go to meetings to address that. My husband is very understanding about my addictions but the book addiction is the easiest one for him to deal with. The main problems with this addiction are: reading in bed (while he's trying to have sex with me), leaning stacks of books everywhere, mounds of cat hair building up on those stacks (evidence of my lack of attention to housework because I am obviously too busy reading), and much of my meagre salary going to buying more books.

I plan to move some of my books to our house in the country to alleviate the issue of the leaning book stacks. As for the other problems, any advice would be appreciated. (Although I may be too busy reading to pay much attention.)
