Kathy (bookgoddess1969) I would be game for Anna Karenina in April as well. That has definitely been on my TBR pile for ages. :)

message 202: by Andrea (new)

Andrea I read Ak a couple of years ago and loved it! I wouldn't be joining you ladies for this one since there are so many other classics that I want to get too. I think it's a great group read though. At times it can get slow and having each other for encouragement will help. Many people I know have started this book several times and given up.

message 203: by Juliette (new)

Juliette I'm not sure where we are on side reads, but I'm curious if anyone is interested in reading Ulysses as a side read. I've had it sitting on my shelf for almost 20 years, and I've heard it's a must read, but I need encouragement and support on this one.

Ulysses would be nice to read in this group! I'm in!

message 205: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Middlemarch has a couple more weeks to go. We can do a poll in the next few weeks for our next classic. If it doesn't make it as a pick then we could see if we have enough people for a side read.

message 206: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie i would definitely vote for ulysses and maybe even read 50% of it! :P

message 207: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Hahahaha! I'm still giving my best to Middlemarch...lol

Good idea.

James Joyce must scare so many readers away from Modernist fiction! :D

Proust looks scarier than Joyce!

message 212: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie speaking of that...i need to go post on Robinson Crusoe...ps. there are a lot of goats! :P

message 213: by Silver (new)

Silver I would be in for reading Ulysses. I have a copy of it, and could use the extra motivation to get around to reading it.

message 214: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) Judy nominated Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner in our Classics thread, but since it's not "technically" a classic we thought it would be a good Side-Read. Who's with us?!?

So far I know of:

Kristi (me)
Judy (who will lead)
Zulfiya

um...i'll have to see what other books we book as classics and contemporaries...don't want to be over extended... :D but the book sounds really good.

message 216: by Mary (new)

Mary (attorneymom) I am interested in reading Angle of Repose, depending on the schedule.

message 217: by Andrea (new)

Andrea I might be interested depending o the timing.

message 218: by Juliette (new)

Juliette I really want to read both chunksters this round, so hopefully we can revisit Ulysses as a side read in a month or so.

message 219: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) sure, send me a schedule with whatever start date you want.

message 220: by Loretta (new)

Loretta (lorettalucia) Whatever happened to our potential read of Anna Karenina? I guess everyone lost interest?

message 221: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Loretta wrote: "Whatever happened to our potential read of Anna Karenina? I guess everyone lost interest?"

I wanted to run that, but I've just started studying for a new qualification and I underestimated how much of my time that would take up by miles! My reading time is virtually non-existant these days, so I wasn't able to make a commitment to Anna Karenina. Sorry to everyone who wanted to take part, but I didn't want to let you all down by having to drop out.

message 222: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Judy wrote: "Maybe when you are done with your studying, Amanda?..."

I'm hoping that my workload will be lighter the second half of this year. I'd definately be interested in doing Anna Karenina still if that were the case and people were still interested.

message 223: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie i'm interested! :D

message 224: by Brandon (new)

Brandon Me too! It'd be fun to read it with this group!

message 225: by Anne (new)

Anne | 137 comments I'm interested too.

message 226: by Juliette (new)

Juliette I am also wanting to read that. Amanda, I'll check with you before I start Ulysses, I rather hold off on Ulysses than miss reading Anna Karenina with this group.
I know there's a crazy idea that we can do both side reads at the same time, but that thought is scarier than Bigfoot.

message 227: by ayanami (new)

ayanami I'm interested in both Ulysses and Anna Karenina though preferably not at the same time, lol!

message 228: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) so who was going to lead Ulysses? Maybe we can talk Amanda into holding Anna until Ulysses is done???

message 229: by Loretta (new)

Loretta (lorettalucia) Wasn't the plan to read AK before the movie came out this fall though?

message 230: by Juliette (new)

Juliette I'm not sure how it works, but I brought up the idea of the Ulysses side read and would be willing to lead it. But if a mod wants to lead it that works for me too, I just can't start it until I get in the groove of Jonathan Strange and Brothers Karamazov.

Also here is the list of people interested in AK and Ulysses, starting with the person who posted the idea.
The question marks symbolize people who might not be ready to start until June/July.

Anna Karenina
Amanda
Stephani
Brandon
Michelle
Sandi
Juliette
Martha ?
Shea ?
Kathy
ayanami

Ulysses
Juliette
Brandon
Stephanie
Judy ?
Silver
ayanami

Just writing my thoughts, it might be best to start AK in June (I think Amanda said she could do that) and then depending on the state of the Classics and Contemporary Chunksters decide when to start Ulysses.

If a mod runs Ulysses, I could read that now. But I couldn't lead a discussion Ulysses until June.

message 231: by Kristi (last edited May 10, 2012 10:06AM) (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) Loretta wrote: "Wasn't the plan to read AK before the movie came out this fall though?"

Loretta: Maybe, but if Amanda is snowed under with work, then it would have to be someone else leading...

Juliette, If you bring up a side read, we expect you to lead it, the Mods are going to be leading the main reads, so any side reads that the members of the groups come up with are all about whoever is reading them. If you want to do Ulysses, please send me a schedule, with a start date, and I will post the thread for the side read....after that it's all up to you to lead the discussions. Also Amanda said she'd be busy with work responsibilities until the 2nd half of the year, so I'm not sure about starting AK in June...

message 232: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie i would like to do both of these books, but if they're read congruently than i'm going to have to say no to one of them. i'm reading jonathan strange right now...a group of friends (and anyone who wants to...hint, hint) and i are going to start infinite jest in june.

i think that's all for now! :D

message 233: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Loretta wrote: "Wasn't the plan to read AK before the movie came out this fall though?"

That was the plan, but there is no way that can happen now! I'll be free the week commencing 18th June, so I am happy to start AK then if people want, although it would be a shame to miss out on the Ulysses read. I wanted to try reading along with the Brothers Karamazov group too, though if we were to do AK, I would have to make that my priority.

I thought so, but I didn't want to assume it and then step on anyone's toes. Since Amanda will start AK in June and I want to participate in that, can I send you a date and schedule for Ulysses when AK is over or close to it? Since there does seem to be a lot of overlap between participation in the two books and we'll most likely have better participation it makes sense for Ulysses to wait.

Absolutely! Just let me know when you decide, I am assuming you will want to wait and see Amanda's schedule first...unless she's going to use my old schedule from when we did it as a Main read.

I don't want to step on anyone's toes either, and I would like the opportunity to read Ulysses and AK too, so if people would prefer to start Ulysses and I start AK after Ulysses, that works for me - either way is good.

Kristi - if I remember rightly, your old AK schedule was a bit slower than the standard rate we read chunksters at now? If so, perhaps it would be better if I devised a new schedule, unless people would prefer a more leisurely read?

Nope...go ahead and make one up yourself...it's all good. Also, I think if we are trying to beat the release of the movie you should go first, followed by Ulysses. Just a thought.

I agree, Anna Karenina should come first. Ulysses can wait.

message 239: by Sandi (new)

Sandi I'd like to read both AK and Ulysses, but preferably not at the same time. I just re-entered university and might be a bit busy this summer/fall.

message 240: by Mary (new)

Mary (attorneymom) I selfishly agree with Judy.

message 241: by Amanda (new)

Amanda I think if most people are in agreeance I'll go ahead an start AK on June 18th as previously discussed, otherwise we're in danger of never getting it, or Ulysses started!

Stephanie I'm in.

message 244: by Brandon (new)

Brandon Count me in too!

message 245: by Riona (new)

Riona (rionafaith) I think I'll get in on this one too, if we are in fact waiting until the middle of June to start. I'd like to do Ulysses somewhere down the road as well. I think I'll need a group to get through that one!

message 246: by Kristina (new)

Kristina (kristina3880) I am in on the Ulysses group read. I already read Anna Karenina and will drop in on the discussion.

message 247: by Amanda (new)

Amanda I've put a schedule together for Anna Karenina that takes us up to the 28th October for those that want to plan around it (19 weeks). I've sent the full schedule to Kristi, so it should be up soon for us to start in a month's time.

wonderful! thanks amanda! :D

message 249: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi there. I know it was read fairly recently in the group but I'm planning on reading Lord of the Rings starting in a couple of weeks and would love some company. I will read it anyway but if anybody else is interested we could set up a side-read. Let me know!

message 250: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Judy, I saw that Angle of Repose started, I don't think I can join in and I wish I could. I think I just have too much going on, but if you see me pop up you'll know I found a way o clear some time!
