Amanda This is the schedule I worked out for The Second Sex, each weekly section being approx 50-70 pages. I haven't put the dates in yet, because I'm not sure when everybody feels they would like to start it, but my personal preferance is February at the earliest.

The Second Sex

Book 1: Facts and Myths
Week 1 - Introduction and Part 1: Ch. 1
Week 2 - Part 1: Ch. 2, 3 and Part 2: Ch. 1, 2 & 3
Week 3 - Part 2: Ch. 4
Week 4 - Part 3: Ch. 1
Week 5 - Part 3: Ch. 2 & 3

Book 2: Woman's Life Today
Week 6 - Part 4: Ch. 1
Week 7 - Part 4: Ch. 2
Week 8 - Part 4: Ch. 3 & 4
Week 9 - Part 5: Ch. 1
Week 10 - Part 5: Ch. 2 & 3
Week 11 - Part 5: Ch. 4, 5 & 6
Week 12 - Part 6: Ch. 1, 2 & 3
Week 13 - Part 7: Ch. 1 & Conclusion

Hope this looks okay to everyone. I haven't put page numbers in as I am sure we will all be reading different editions.

Go ahead and suggest a February start date. That timing works for me. I'll open the thread once you do so.

message 153: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Shall we say Feb 19th to give everybody a few weeks grace?

message 154: by Andrea (new)

Andrea If anyone is interest the Moonstone can be downloaded for free from Project Gutenberg! It looks like they even have a kindle edition for some books now.

message 159: by Jen (new)

Jen (jeninseattle) | 140 comments I love, love, loved Kavalier and Clay. Don't know if I have the steam in me to read it again right now, but I'm mulling it over.

message 160: by Kristina (new)

Kristina (kristina3880) I am super excited about The Moonstone. If I was not reading a plethora of books right now, I would join in with Kavalier and Clay. I have it on my TBR. Hope everyone enjoys it!!

I can go ahead and open up a preliminary thread for this (plenty of time for things to be finalized before February) if you'd like.

message 162: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I would like to be in on The Moonstone group, please. Thanks! :D

message 163: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Go ahead Loretta, people who want to take part can have a bit of a preamble in the thread before it starts if they wish.

Also, are we registering for reads? Sounds like a good idea.

Great, Stephanie! Kristi will have to add you to that thread. I'm looking forward to our side read!

i'm pretty excited, it will be my first wilkie collins! :D

message 167: by Amanda (new)

Amanda I've been wanting to read The Moonstone before reading Mr. Whitcher, as I'd heard that The Moonstone was based on the real experiences of the detective on that case. Count me in!

message 168: by Everyman (new)

Everyman | 885 comments I'm getting confused as to what are proposed side reads and what are approved side reads and when the approved ones will start. If I'm the only one confused, chalk it up to a senior moment stretching into a very long moment. But maybe others are confused, too, in which case some clarification might be helpful.

message 169: by Sandi (new)

Sandi My guess is that those side-reads with their own threads are the approved ones, which at this moment are The Moonstone and Kavalier and Clay:

message 170: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Everyman, I believe that all the approved side reads have been added to the upcoming group reads section available on the main page.

Loretta (lorettalucia) Amanda wrote: "Everyman, I believe that all the approved side reads have been added to the upcoming group reads section available on the main page."

This is true, plus preliminary threads have been opened for all of them (though these will be edited and finalized as we approach the start dates).

message 172: by Rosemary (last edited Dec 11, 2011 05:00AM) (new)

Rosemary Just to remind everybody the reading of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay has started. We are just beginning the week 2 discussion but there is still time to catch up if you haven't started yet. Please join us for discussion on the Kavalier and Clay thread under Side Reads. :-)

message 173: by Andrea (new)

Andrea So far it's a really interesting book that is fast moving!

The approved side reads have their own threads.

Haaze | 120 comments Silly question: why do we need to register for a read?

message 176: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) Just to make sure there is enough interest...

Haaze | 120 comments Gotcha... Thanks Kristi

message 178: by Amanda (last edited Dec 14, 2011 02:02AM) (new)

Amanda I'm behind with Kavalier and Clay, but I hope to catch up a bit and start discussing by the end of the weekend. Unfortunately life has been getting in the way of my reading.

Also, this is looking ahead a bit, but there is a film of Anna Karenina coming out early August and I plan to start reading the book after The Moonstone finishes the beginning of April. I think this group already read it, but before I joined so I'll need to play catch up with a side read. I'll be reading it regardless, but I don't mind taking the opportunity to run a discussion if people are interested.

message 179: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie i would love to do Anna Karenina with you...i think i need to read it with an adult brain. :D

message 180: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Yay! I really enjoyed doing Mists with you, Stephanie, so glad to see you are on board!

Did you read it when you were younger?

message 181: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) Amanda wrote: "Yay! I really enjoyed doing Mists with you, Stephanie, so glad to see you are on board!

If you want you can borrow the schedule from the first group read...

message 182: by Brandon (new)

Brandon I've never read Anna Karenina, but heard it's a really good novel. I'd definitely be interested.

message 183: by Loretta (new)

Loretta (lorettalucia) With so many great books that this group hasn't read, however, isn't it a bit early to start re-reading things we've only read in the past couple years?

message 184: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthas48) I hope to read it someday, but I'm just swamped with great books now so I'm going to have to pass this time around! LOL

message 185: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Loretta wrote: "With so many great books that this group hasn't read, however, isn't it a bit early to start re-reading things we've only read in the past couple years?"

Thats why I was testing the water here. I missed out on the initial read because I wasn't a member yet and figured others might be in the same boat. If people feel it is too soon that's fine.

Kristi - if we do go ahead, a loan of the old schedule would be great! Perhaps we could even use the old discussion threads to save space, or would that mess things up?

message 186: by Loretta (new)

Loretta (lorettalucia) IIRC, they ended up speeding up the read because the initial schedule was too slow. Just FYI if this goes ahead and you try to use the old schedule.

message 187: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) Also, I wouldn't try to use the old threads, I think it would be too confusing. you could link to the old threads so that you can include ideas from them, but I'd stick to one thread for the side-read.

message 188: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Thanks for the feedback both. I estimated that Anna should take us approx 19 weeks given the speed we've read most of our other reads at, which would take us past the release date of the film by a couple of weeks, but we could end with a double week to speed things up if people want - I personally find myself often speeding up towards the end anyway.

So far I only have two takers though.

i read it when i was in high school and then watched the mini series. i like the story (if one can like such a story), but think i would appreciate it more now. i enjoyed doing mist together as well, joy!

i'd also be willing to speed up the reading! :D

yeah! :D

message 191: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michelle8731) I'm totally in a really long classics kind of mood. Count me in for Anna Karenina!!! Excited!

Also, count me in for The Moonstone. I just read the book description, and I'm definitely intrigued.

message 192: by Sandi (new)

Sandi I'd be interested in Anna Karenina as well, since I've had a copy for a while but the size was too intimidating...

message 193: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Ok, interest its up to four besides myself. Not sure what sort of numbers people feel is worthwhile, but its starting to look good to me.

message 194: by Juliette (new)

Juliette YES!!! I was so sad to see that Anna Karenina was done here already before I joined, so I would be in for a side read after Moonstone! Yay! I'm so glad you brought it up.

Amanda Juliette wrote: "YES!!! I was so sad to see that Anna Karenina was done here already before I joined, so I would be in for a side read after Moonstone! Yay! I'm so glad you brought it up."

I know! It disappointed me more than any of the other previously read books and it's so long I feel like I could use a little morale support. I have to admit that Tolstoy is one of those authors I still find intimidating too, he's such a lit giant.

I completely agree. I can read a lot of chunksters alone, but I think Tolstoy would be easier done with a group.

message 197: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthas48) If you're reading AK after The Moonstone, I'll participate also. I'm just swamped with books now.

message 198: by Shea (new)

Shea I would also be interested if I am not spread too thin otherwise. I would love to count it as one of my classics for 2012.

message 199: by Loretta (last edited Dec 15, 2011 09:01AM) (new)

Loretta (lorettalucia) LOL, I tried reading AK this year and only read Part I (of VIII). I might just read it on my own though.

message 200: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Martha wrote: "If you're reading AK after The Moonstone, I'll participate also. I'm just swamped with books now."

Yes Martha, I'm proposing a start date promptly after The Moonstone finishes at the beginning of April so we can be finished with Anna at the beginning of August. Lots of warning!
