Indonesians Who Love English Books discussion
Hello and Welcome!
>
What Are You Reading?
right now im reading Leaving Microsoft to Change the World: An Entrepreneur's Odyssey to Educate the World's Children by john wood
I'm reading Dark Lover by J.R. Ward, as well as Nightwalker by Heather Graham. So far, I like the latter more. ;)
I'm reading The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan. Well... reading AND translating itu, actually. It's a very cool fantasy story.
@allezn I read the synopsis for Dark Lover, it seems like it's good? Doesn't seem you like it that much though, haha.
@Dina Wow, the Great Hunt? Isn't that the second book of the WoT series? I read that a while ago and I loved it :) I'm currently reading The Gathering Storm which is the 12th I think of the series. You're translating it? Why? Is it a job of yours? :)

@Dina Wow, the Great Hunt? Isn't that the second book of the WoT series? I rea..."Yup, the same. And yes, it's my job. Neat, isn't it? having fun and got paid :D
So have you read all WoT in between? I really wish the publisher will hire me until the end of the series... and the prequels as well *prayingpraying*
@Rachel I have to say that at the moment, 'Dark Lover' just isn't my kind of series. I'm not saying that it's bad, not at all, but I've read many vampire books, and at this point I just want something different. Maybe a vampire who suffers from toothache (or more accurately, fang-ache?), LoL. I know that this is a bad and ridiculous example, but I hope you get what I mean. A new vampire character who is full of twists. Are you into vampire books as well, Rachel? :D
@Dina: Oh wow, that's a cool job! Though I can imagine the headaches, trying to find the right translation to some particular English words/phrases. But, then again, it's me who always have troubles with it, not you I bet! :D
Right now I've moved on to City of the Beasts by Isabel Allende, and it's my 8th book this year. It's a rather alarming stats, but I welcome it anyway, LoL
The Atlantis Complex, also The Angel Experiment (Maximum Ride), but the I only read a few pages of the latter :DI just finished The Time Traveler's Wife yesterday, though, (ignore my blatant delay in reading this amazing book), and I loved it so much! I'm trying to catch up with the older books first (read the The Catcher in the Rye two months ago and is planning to read Lord of the Flies sometimes this month), but there are so many recent books that I want to read too .__.
@Dina: Woah, what a dream job. Seriously. If only my Indonesian was good, I would really consider a career in being a translator. haha. Yes, I have. I started reading the WoT books in highschool. I've only got my hands on The Gathering Storm recently. Didn't realize Kinokuniya had it already, hehe. How are you enjoying it so far? :)
@allezn: Hmm, I wouldn't say I'm into vampire books per se, but I have been in a young adult phase for a while, and well... you know there are plenty of supernatural young adult books in the market right now. hahaha. I've read my share of vampire books, and I'm taking a break from them. It's the same formula over and over again, don't you think? 8 books? That's pretty impressive. I'm thinking of setting a goal of 100 hundred books this year, but I seriously doubt I can commit to it. I'm really busy this year. But what do you guys think? Would you like to have one of those reading lists contest? We can set up one here :)
@katasha: Aloha, Katasha! Nice to have you here. Hey, how is Maximum Ride though? I've heard so many good things about it. Does it live up to it's hype? Oh, The Time Traveler's Wife! I loved that book. I cried like a baby at the end of it. Unfortch, the movie didn't do the book any justice. Katasha, you are just like me! There was a time when I wanted to catch up with the older books too (did not like The Catcher in the Rye, did you?). Still do, but they are a lot of work sometime. hehe. I still haven't had time to finish Anna Karenina(still halfway through, indefinitely, lol), and I have an untouched copy of Madame Bovary on my table. lol.
Nice to have you all here by the way! I'll try to make this group more interesting :)

@Allezn: I guess I'm luckky. Translating is really a challenging job and daunting for some people but I like it:)@Rachel: I like it so much and the publisher is thinking of offering translation job for The Dragon Reborn... Yes!!
The Dragon Reborn is one of the best books of the series! Fingerscrossed that you'll get the translation job for it. It's such a great read, I'm sure you'll have fun with it :)
Digital Fortressby Dan Brown, I hope this book will got better in next page, since too much romantic stuff and too little action :D
@Rachel So far, Maximum Ride is okay. I mean, I'm a little troubled by the unusual chapter templates (two, three pages per chapter), but it's good. Full of action and suspense. I find myself rolling my eyes at everything Max said/thought about this girl, Angel, though. She makes it like Angel's so perfect and all, and I just don't know about her at all to think the same. I just think that the writer should focus on the plot more and wrote less of Max wailing about this Angel character. As for the Catcher in the Rye, when I first finished reading it, I thought it was bad (because I expected more plot, or at least Holden maturing). But then I read it again and realized that the thing about the book was that it focused more on what Holden thinks, and somehow it challenged me to put myself in Holden's shoes and sympathize with him.
@Dina You're a translator? Wow. I can never be a translator, cause apparently my Indonesian is really, really bad. I have to ask my friend sometimes, what's the Indonesian word for something, because I am that horrible. You're lucky though, I bet you can read many books for free :p
Recently found this group. I am reading The Railway Station Man by Jennifer Johnston. Anyone ever read this book? I look for the other book from Johnston, but I don't get it.
Beside textbooks (that I have to read, unfortunately), I'm reading romance... any genre romance, my fave is historical romance. Prefer English version than terjemahan ^^ Sometimes I feel terjemahan is so horrible and vulgar. Perhaps editor didn't do his/her job properly :(
@Tyas: Hello Tyas, welcome to the group. I have never read that book or any other books by Jennifer Johnston. How is it? It is hard to get books here in Indonesia. You can try ordering it online from www.bookdepository.co.uk, or you can pre-order from Periplus and Kinokuniya :)
@Nunung: What's your favourite Historical Romance book? I've only read a few. Nothing has blown me away yet. Any recommendations?

How are you enjoying Clockwork Angel? I've been debating whether to buy it or not.

Thick novels require a great deal of commitment, lol. Goodluck with it though :)
I just finished The Virgin Suicides and it was perfect. Loved it completely.
And now I'm halfway through The Great Gatsby and I'm enjoying it so much. It's been such a long time since I enjoyed a classic this much. So far so good :)

I've been reading The Hunger Games trilogy, right now I'm busy with Catching Fire.
I just started Tess d' Urbervilles after abandoning War and Peace (I promised myself that I'll finish it one day though).

I tell myself the same thing. lol. I've always wanted to read War and Peace, but I'm not sure I can commit to it at the moment. I'm almost half-way through Anna Karenina, I've also abandoned it. But! I promise myself that I'll finish it one day too. :p

Have you read them all? Did you enjoy it?
I am reading Radical Reform by Tariq Ramadan. This book give me a new perspective in viewing Islamic values.

Yes, I've read them all. I enjoyed the first one the most, didn't like the second one (at first, but in retrospect, I now think the second one is pretty good too), and I hated the third one. hahaha. I was really disappointed with how the trilogy ended. It had such great promise in the beginning. However, do share your thoughts on Mockingjay after you read it.
As disappointed as I was with the trilogy, I think it will translate really well onto the big screen. I'm excited for the movie :)

I was SORE after fast-reading the entire Hunger Games trilogy in roughly a week or so. I was way bothered, but all in all, I still like the trilogy so very much, and, well, it's about wars, and wars have to be ugly and unsettling, so I think Suzanne Collins succeeds in getting her message across. That's only my two cents though. But, yes, I agree, I hate the ending on the first two books, they made me want to throw some things around, especially the end of 'Catching Fire'. Ugh.
Erm, anyway, I just finished reading Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan, and the narrator, Paul, is interesting and hilarious, IMO. :) I think I'm going to tackle Neverwhere next.
wow you all guys amaze me!many of the books mention here i didn't have a clue about whatsinit! feels out of place, he he..
right now i'm reading Michael Freeman's books. or is there anyone reading Michael Pollan's?
Guys, I just read Divergent by Veronica Roth and it was amazing! I'm a Young Adult book nut so I'm recommending it to those who also loves YA :D
I actually liked the ending of The Hunger Games book 1 Allezn, I thought it was bitter-sweet and beautiful; it had so much possibilities. I just can't stand Mockingjay, that's all.
No, I'm not reading Michael Pollan's books, Matthew. Never heard of him :(. But welcome to the group!

I've just finished the The Damned Busters by Matthew Hughes and now I'm not sure whether I should read the second book of Chaos Walking series (The Ask and The Answer) by Patrick Ness or The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter
I'm reading Emma Donoghue's "Room". It's getting more and more interesting. Hope to finish it in 1 or 2 more days.
I'm now reading Joseph Mazur's "The Motion Paradox".The book reveals one of the most interesting subjects in scientific debate, about space and time, and is presented in a way that all people, no matter they have science background or not, can "easily" comprehend. As a social student, I do enjoy reading it :)
I'm in between books right now but I think I am going to try reading Che Guevara's Motorcyle Diaries.
I'm reading two Kindle samples, trying to decide whether to buy Life Ascending: The Ten Great Inventions of Evolution or Power Sex Suicide: Mitochondria and the Meaning of Life, both by Nick Lane.
I read again Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows after I watched the movie in part 1 to determine the real plot of the story.
Just finished Philip K. Dick Omnibus (The Man in the High Castle/The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch/Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?/Ubik). Now, I'm reading 'A Visit From the Goon Squad'.
Whoa I'm so excited to see people start and finish their reading materials!I finished Room a few days ago and now I'm juggling between Lolita, The Spire, Of Bees and Mist, and Garis Batas.
I just finished The Demon King by Cinda Williams Chima. It was OK. I'm optimistic for the sequels though.
I've read Lolita, Anna. It's on the top 10 list of the best 20th century books if I'm not mistaken. Unfortunately, I didn't really like it. But I'll be interested to hear your take on it :)

Right now, I'm reading Banewreaker by Jacqueline Carey. Kind of underwhelming though, so far.
